Olympic Torch Relay Started on May 19 / How Was the Olympic Flame Carried?

ご無沙汰しています！長らくお休みしていたので、どうも今一つやる気が出ないのですが、今日から重い腰を上げてブログを再開します。

オリンピック開催まで後２ヶ月余り。オリンピック聖火が１８日、特別に彩色されたブリティッシュ・エアウェイズ機「Firefly（ホタル）」によってアテネから運ばれ、イギリス南西部・コーンウォールにあるRoyal Naval Air Station（英海軍航空基地）に到着。その後の歓迎式典で、スポーツ選手というよりファッションデザイナーのごとき風貌になったサッカーのイングランド代表元主将、デービッド・ベッカムにより、特設小型聖火台に聖火が点された（参照：Daily Mail）。翌19日、ランズエンド岬（Land’s End：地の果て）をスタート地点に、オリンピック聖火リレーがスタート。栄えある第一走者は、セーリングで３つのオリンピック金メダルを獲得したコーンウォール出身のBen Ainslie（ベン・エインスリー）選手（参照：Daily Telegraph）。聖火は約8000人の聖火ランナーの手で、70日かけて、イギリス全土とアイルランドの一部約8000マイル（12,800 km）を旅し、7月27日の開会式で、ロンドンのオリンピックスタジアムの聖火台に点される（聖火リレールート）。

オリンピックの聖火はどうやってアテネから運ばれたのか？ブリティッシュ・エアウェイズの機内誌「high life」でその謎を発見した。聖火は、「symbolic flame（象徴としての炎）」として、特別許可を得て機内に持ち込むことができるとのこと。ギリシャのオリンピアにあるヘーラー寺院で「太陽光を利用して採火された」聖火は、ギリシャ国内での8日間のリレーを経て、5月17日にアテネのパナシナイコスタジアムでの式典でロンドンオリンピック委員会に手渡された。4つの儀式用ランタンに入れられた聖火は、特別仕様の受け台と共に、シートベルトとVelcro（マジックテープ）によってビジネスクラス座席1A・1Bの2席にしっかり固定、お目付役に見守られて4時間の空の旅を無事終えた。

After having long break, I restart my blog today, though I am a bit rusty in writing.

2 months+ to go to the London Olympic 2012. On May 18th, specially decorated British Airways flight “The Firefly” brought Olympic Flame from Athen to Royal Naval Air Station in Cornwall, south west of England. After arrival, the London 2012 torch was lit from the Flame at the welcome ceremony and was passed to former England football team captain David Beckham who lit a cauldron where it burned overnight (Daily Mail). The next day on 19th, the Olympic Torch Relay started from Land’s End, carried by the first torchbearer Ben Ainslie, three-times Olympic gold medallist in sailing from Cornwall (Daily Telegraph). The Flame will travel about 8,000 miles in 70-day around the UK (and a bit of Ireland), carried by 8,000 torchbearers, to the final destination, London’s Olympic Stadium, on the opening ceremony on July 27th (Olympic Torch Relay Route).

I happened to find the information of how to bring the Olympic Flame on the British Airways inflight magazine “high life“. The Olympic Flame is classified as a symbolic flame so it is permitted to be carried on board an aircraft subject to special authorisation, according to the article. After being lit by the “power of the sun” at a ceremony at the Temple of Hera in Olympia, following an 8-day relay tour of Greece, the Flame was handed to London 2012 delegates in the Handover Ceremony at the Athen’s Panathinaiko Stadium on May 17. Then the Flame traveled in a set of four ceremonial lanterns that are secured in a specially designed cradle, firmly fixed to the business class seats 1A and 1B with a seat belt and Velcro strap, accompanied by an Olympic Flame Minder.

Team GB Uniforms for London 2012 Olympics Designed by Stella McCartney

今日、言わずと知れたポール・マッカートニーの娘で人気ファッション・デザイナーのステラ・マッカートニーがデザインした、ロンドン・オリンピックのアディダス製イギリス代表公式ユニフォームが公開された。ユニオン・ジャックをモチーフにしたスタイリッシュなデザインのユニフォーム、早速「too blue」との批判が続出。ご存知のように、イギリス国旗は赤白青の三色を使用。ユニフォームの他の部分やソックス、靴に赤色が使われているが、肝心の国旗デザインは青白のみ、まるでスコットランドの国旗のようだという声が多い（写真中）。多くの人も指摘している、イギリスのリアリティTV番組・Xファクターのロゴに似た男性アスリートのウェスト周り（写真上の右側）と、ジャケットのリボンベルト（写真中の両端）は？？だが、過去7回のイギリス代表ユニフォームと比べても、今回の日本代表ユニフォームと比べても洗練されてると思う。イギリス人は何でもかんでも批判する癖があるから仕方ないけど。

The London 2012 Olympic uniforms for GB team, designed by British fashion designer Stella McCartney (a daughter of Paul McCartney) for Adidas, is unveiled today. However, this stylish design with Union Jack motif comes under fire as ‘too blue’. As you know, Union Jack consists of three colours; blue, white, and red. Though Stella uses red in some parts of the uniforms, socks, and shoes (2nd photo), red is apparently missing from the flag part, and it looks more ‘Scottish’. British likes to criticise everything, but I think it is quite cool in compare to past seven games (bottom photo) and Japanese team uniform for London 2012; except reality TV show X-factor‘s  logo around the waist of male athlete (right on the 1st photo), like many others pointed out, and a ribbon belt for the women’s jacket which is unnecessary and unpractical (both ends on the 2nd photo).

“Diver” by Ron Haselden @ Diespeker Wharf, Regent’s Canal

エンジェルからの帰り、Regent’s Canal（リージェンツ・カナル）を歩いていた時見た光景。調べてみると、子供たちの描いた絵を元にして、アーティスト・Ron Haselden（ロン・ハーセルデン）が制作された「Diver（ダイバー）」だそうだ。これは、600人のロンドンの小学生とハーセルデンのコラボレーションで、Paddington Basin（パディントン船着き場）からオリンピック開催地まで、リージェンツ・カナル沿いのの9マイルの遊歩道を、8つのanimated light sculptures（動く光の彫刻）で飾ろうという、オリンピック・アート・プロジェクト「GAMES」の一環。ロンドンの様々な場所を、著名アーティストによる光のインスタレーションで飾ろうというプロジェクト「Art Lights London」によって制作された。残り7つのインスタレーションも随時設置される予定で、運河沿いを行き交う人々の目を楽しませてくれそう。

「Diver」は2月2日夜、飛び込みのオリンピック銀メダリストであるPeter Waterfield（ピーター・ウォーターフィールド）によって点灯、お披露目された。改装されたビクトリア時代の製材所・Diespeker Wharf横にクレーンで吊り下げられたこの作品は、今年度末まで見ることができる。暗くなってライトアップされた方が綺麗だと思うが、薄暗い運河沿いを歩くのはちょっと怖いので、夜見に行かれる方は気をつけて。

This is what I found when I was walking back on Regent’s Canal from Angel. Later I found out by googling, that it is called “Diver“, created by artist Ron Haselden from drawings by local schoolchildren. This is the first of eight animated light sculptures of an Olympic art project “GAMES”, which is an collaboration between 600 London primary school children and Haselden, and is produced by “Art Lights London“, a cultural initiative to creating a series of light installations by renowned artists. The rest of seven sculptures will be placed along 9-mile trail of Regent’s Canal from Paddington Basin to the Olympic site, and will entertain pedestrians and cyclists passing through the canal , together with ”Diver“.

This light sculpture was unveiled and switched on by British Olympic silver medallist diver Peter Waterfield on February 2. You can see this work suspended from a crane at the Victorian timber mill Diespeker Wharf, until the end of this year. It must look better after dark with lights, but be careful when you walk along the dim-lighted canal at night!

“Get Ahead of the Games” Website to Help You Avoid Traffic Chaos

2012年ロンドンオリンピック開催まで6ヶ月を切った。期間中街は人で溢れ、交通事情も悪くなると予想される。そのため、ロンドン市民や訪れる人たちに、市内の交通渋滞や、影響があると予想されるイギリスの道路や鉄道網の情報を提供する、「Get Ahead of the Games（オリンピックに勝て／先手を打て）」というウェブサイト、ソーシャルメディア、そして新しい広告キャンペーンが立ち上げられた。

Olympic Delivery Authority（オリンピック施設やインフラを担当する機関） London 2012（ロンドンオリンピック委員会）、Department for Transport（交通省）、Highways Agency（高速道路管理局）、National Rail（ナショナル・レール）、 Mayor of London（大ロンドン市長）の協力のもと、Transport for London（ロンドン交通局）によって作られたこのウェブサイト、影響を受ける場所や時間、渋滞が予想される場合、違うルートを探す情報を得る事ができる。ウェブサイトの主な特徴は以下の通り。

• 影響のある場所を示したインタラクティブ地図
• 主に混雑が予想される駅の詳細
• Games lanes（オリンピック専用レーン）や、Olympic Route Network (ORN)、Paralympic Road Network (PRN)（共に関係者用レーン）等、交通規制の情報

• ロンドン交通情報

ツイッター（@GAOTG Twitter channel）でも交通情報・アドバイスが入手可能。

出かける時に役立ちそうなウェブサイトだけれど、この冴えないイラストがどうも気に入らない（大嫌いなLloyds TSB（ロイズTSB）の広告を彷彿させる）。かなりブーイングの出たオリンピックのロゴやマスコットもしかり。常々ロンドンは、「世界のデザインの中心地」だとうそぶいているが、「クール・ブリタニア」はいったいどこに行ってしまったのか？それとも私のテイストが時代遅れで、こんなのが今流行なんだろうか？？

The London 2012 Olympic Games will start in less than 6 months. The city will be much busier than usual during the period, so in order to help Londoners and visitors avoid travel ‘hotspots’ in the city and some UK’s roads and rail networks, the ‘Get Ahead of the Games’, with new advertising campaign, website and social media channels, has been launched.

The website, developed by Transport for London on behalf of the Olympic Delivery Authority, London 2012, the Department for Transport, the Highways Agency, National Rail and the Mayor of London, provides the traveling public with information of if, where, and when travel will be affected, and helps you  find an alternative route and journey if necessary.

The website contains:

• An interactive map showing the impact on travel
• Details of key affected stations
• Information on the Games lanes, the Olympic Route Network (ORN), the Paralympic Road Network (PRN) and how road restrictions may affect you
• Days and times of events
• Travel tips to help you get around in London

If you are Twitter user, by following the @GAOTG Twitter channel will give you the the latest tips, travel information and advice as well.

It sounds very useful when you travel to/through busy areas in London. But one problem, I don’t like the illustration on the website and advertising campaign (it reminds me of annoying Lloyds TSB ads, for some reason) – a bit old-fashioned, as much as Olympic logo and mascots. I thought London is the design capital of the world. What happened to Cool Britannia?! or I am the one who has outdated taste, and these are ‘cool’ now??
