One Sunny Day in Greenwich

5月も終わり近いというのに季節が逆行、寒くて曇り空ばかりの日が続くロンドン。ちょっと古い話になるけれど、春らしい日が続いた約2週間前のある日、ロンドン南東部のグリニッジに足を伸ばした。グリニッジ平均時の基準都市として名前は知っていたけれど、長年ロンドンに住んでいるにも関わらず、この世界遺産となっている街に行ったのは恥ずかしながらこれが初めて。あいにく午後遅く着いたので、有名なグリニッジ天文台やカティーサーク号等中には入れず、周囲の散策だけで終わってしまった（恥）。見所全て説明すると長ったらしくなるので、詳細はリンクをクリックして、Wikipediaを参照してください。

It is almost the end of May, but it has been cold and cloudy in London these days. Where is the spring sun?! About two weeks ago, the city had experienced brief moment of sun and warm days, so we went to Greenwich, South East London. I know the name of the town since I studied Greenwich Mean Time at school, but we’d never been there during all these years of living in London, and incredibly this was the first time for us to visit this World Heritage Site (I know it’s a shame). Unfortunately we couldn’t go inside of the historical monuments such as Cutty Sark and Royal Observatory, as we arrived late afternoon, but just walked around the Greenwich Park. Another embarrassment… It would be too long if I explain all the places of interest, so please click a link and check Wikipedia for more details.

現存する唯一のティークリッパー船、カティーサーク号。中国からイギリスへ紅茶を運ぶのに使われた。保存のため大規模な修理と整備を行っていた2007年に火災が起き作業に遅れが出たが、2012年4月に一般公開が再開された（詳細）。

Cutty Sark, a British tea clipper ship that carried tea from China to UK. The ship was badly damaged by fire in 2007 while undergoing conservation, but the vessel has been restored and was reopened to the public in April 2012.

グリニッジ子午線（経度0度）における平均太陽時（mean solar time）を指すグリニッジ平均時を定めたグリニッジ天文台。1990年にケンブリッジに観測機関が移転した後は、National Maritime Museum（国立海事博物館）の一部として、天文観測や航海用具などを展示している。

Royal Observatory, known as the location of the prime meridian. After the observatory moved to Cambridge in 1990, a part of the buildings is used as a museum of astronomical and navigational tools, which is part of the National Maritime Museum.

City of London Community Toilet Scheme

ふと見たカフェに貼ってあったこのステッカー。何だろうと思って調べてみたら、これはシティ・オブ・ロンドンのCommunity Toilet Scheme (CTS)の一環で、域内の参加店が店内のトイレを一般に開放する代わりに、シティが「contribution」を与える仕組み。詳細は書いていないから、contributionが何を意味するのか不明だが、対価＝お金を支払うということか？参加店は、状況によっては、トイレ利用を断る権利を有するともある。怪しい人たちにはトイレは貸さないということか。トイレ利用の際、何かを買ったり注文したりしなくても良い前提ではあるけれど、利用した人たちは罪悪感からか、何かを買ったりする人も少なからずいるらしいので、店にとってもメリットはあるようだ。参加店は、シティ・オブ・ロンドンのウェブサイトでチェック可能。

I saw this sticker on one of restauranst in the City. I am curious about what it is and checked it out. According to the City of London website, City’s Community Toilet Scheme (CTS) is to provide toilet facilities available to the public with partnership with local businesses, supplementing the City’s facilities. In exchange for providing free access to toilets to the public, the City pays a ‘contribution’ to participating businesses, though they still retains the right to refuse admission in exceptional circumstances. There is no details of ‘contribution’ means, but maybe money? Anyways, this scheme brings win-win to everyone involved. It is reported that people using their toilets often do make a purchase, though they don’t need to buy anything. You can check participating businesses on their websites.

“Please Do Give ‘Drugs’ to the Beggars” @ Old Street Station

これは、オールドストリート駅の出口で見かけたサイン。イズリントン区によって書かれたこのサインは、元々「PLEASE DO NOT GIVE TO THE BEGGARS（ホームレスにお金をあげないでください）」だったのが、数日後に何者かの手で「PLEASE DO GIVE TO THE BEGGARS（ホームレスにお金をあげてください）」に変えられ（St John Street News website）、その後上のように「PLEASE DO GIVE DRUGS TO THE BEGGARS（ホームレスに麻薬をあげてください）」となったようだ。オールドストリート駅には合計8つの出口があり、その全てに書かれてるかどうか分からないけれど、flickrユーザーのStephen*Iliffeがアップしている、「PLEASE DO NOT GIVE DRUGS TO THE BEGGARS（ホームレスに麻薬をあげないでください）」の美しい白黒写真は、私が見たのと同じものだろうか？

警察によると、オールドストリート駅の物乞いはここ数年来の問題だったという。そのため、これらのサインとともに警察官の見回りを増やし、出口辺りに座ってお金を無心していたホームレス達は、駅から追い出されることとなった。イズリントンのホームページでは、ホームレスに直接お金を渡すのではなく、ホームレスのためのチャリティー団体に寄付して欲しいという。実際、ホームレスの慈善団体・Thames Reachによると、80％ものホームレスが、もらったお金は麻薬類購入に使っていると認めているそうだ。

This is the sign I found at one of the exits at Old Street Station. Originally it was painted as “‘PLEASE DO NOT GIVE TO THE BEGGARS” by Islington Council, but few days later the sign were altered as “PLEASE DO GIVE TO THE BEGGARS”, according to St John Street News website, but now changed again sarcastically “PLEASE DO GIVE DRUGS TO THE BEGGARS,” as you see above. I am not sure if the signs painted on the ground of all eight exits, but I found one flickr user, Stephen*Iliffe, posted an artistic photo of the altered version, “PLEASE DO NOT GIVE DRUGS TO THE BEGGARS.”

According to the police, begging at Old Street station has been a problem for years, and beggars were forced to leave the station after this painting had been made and  increased police presence at the station. On their homepage, the Islington council asks people to not give to beggars, but make a donation to local homeless charities instead. Homelessness charity Thames Reach suggests that estimate 80% of people begging do so to support a drug habit (Guardian).

Rufus the Corgi, the face of ‘London, Now See It for Yourself’

このビデオのキュートなコーギーの名前は「Rufus（ルーファス）」。ロンドン観光局のビジターキャンペーン「London, Now See It for Yourself‘」の「顔」だ。ロンドン観光局のウェブサイト（visitlondon.com）のキャンペーン特別ページではまた、アーティスト・Jenni Sparksが手描きデザインしたインタラクティブ・マップで、主な観光地、新名所やイベント、そして知る人ぞ知る街情報などが紹介されている（詳細：プレスリリース）。

現在6週間に渡り、週変わりで違うテーマのロンドン旅行が当たるキャンペーンを実施中（今は3週目で賞品はグルメ旅行）。サイトの地図上で、ヒントを頼りにルーファスを探し出しクリックして応募する。「ウォーリーを探せ」じゃないけど、これが意外に難しく、今週も見つけられず撃沈。。。

Currently visitlondon.com has been hosting 6 themed weekly competitions for 6 weeks (now in 3rd week). Each week, a participant could win a trips to London with different theme, by finding Rufus down on the map with the clues to track him down. It is quite difficult like “Where is Wally?”, and I couldn’t spot him on this week competition unfortunately…

Vrigin Media WiFi on London Underground

Virgin Media（ヴァージン・メディア）は、ロンドンオリンピックにあわせ、2012年6月から1月29日まで、ロンドン地下鉄での無料WiFiサービスを提供してきた。でもそのサービスも昨日で終了、今後もサービスを無料で使えるヴァージン・メディア（携帯電話・ブロードバンド）と携帯電話キャリアのボーダフォン、EE、T-モバイル、Orangeの顧客以外は、WiFi pass（1日£2 / 1週間£5 / １ヶ月£15）を購入しなければWiFiを使えなくなった。2月末までは期間限定で、2ヶ月分無料の3ヶ月パス（£15）を販売中。ちなみに、地下鉄利用者は引き続き、交通情報やロンドンのエンターテイメント、ニュースを提供するVirgin WiFiのポータルサイトは無料で利用できる。

ヴァージン・メディアは、昨年3月にロンドン地下鉄にWi-Fiを提供する契約を獲得。今週新たに11駅が既存のWiFiネットワークに加わり、3月末までにはロンドンの約120駅でWiFiが使用できるようになるという（WiFi接続駅リスト）。その他、WiFiプロバイダーのThe Cloudは、London Overground全56駅にWiFiコネクションを提供する契約を結び、またEyetease社提案の広告入りタクシー内無料高速WiFi サービスもロンドン交通局の認可を得た。WiFiモデルのタブレットユーザーや旅行者には嬉しいニュースだ。

うちはヴァージン・メディアとブロードバンド契約しているので、無料で地下鉄のWiFiを使えるけれど、改札口やエレベーター、プラットフォームでのみ接続可で動いている電車内では使えないので、あんまり重宝していない。電車で使えたら便利なのになあ。

Virgin Media had been offering free WiFi service since June 2012, coinciding with the London 2012 Olympic Games, till yesterday on January 29th. From today, no more free WiFi for everyone, except Virgin Media mobile and broadband customers as well as the the Vodafone, EE, T-Mobile and Orange customers who continue to enjoy free WiFi. Others have to purchase WiFi pass (£2@day / £5@week / £15@month) to use WiFi at Tube stations. During February, you can buy a 3-month special pass for £15 as a limited offer. However, Tube customers can still get free access to a Virgin WiFi portal, offering travel updates from Transport for London, information on London entertainment, and news.

Virgin Media won the contract to provide Wi-Fi to the London Underground in last March. This week new 11 stations were being connected to the Tube WiFi network, and the network is due to be expanded to around 120 stations by the end of March 2013 (list of the stations with WiFi).

Other good news for tourists and WiFi model tablet users: WiFi provider The Cloud has won another deal to provide Wi-Fi connections at all 56 London Overground stations; and the ad-supported free London taxi high-speed WiFi proposed by Eyetease was approved by Transport for London.

I am a Virgin Media broadband customer and can use the Tube WiFi service for free, but I don’t see it very useful – the service works only on ticket halls, escalators, platforms and on trains while at platforms, but not on trains on the move…
