One New Changeの1階で見かけた、頭やお尻、そして着ているコートにたくさんのキスマークのついた黒犬の像。これは、メンタルヘルスのチャリティ団体・SANEが、うつ病やメンタルヘルスへの認識を高めるため、「Black Dog Campaign（黒犬キャンペーン）」の一環としてロンドン各地に設置した40体の黒犬の一つ。団体の設立25周年の年に合わせ、昨年7月から今年7月まで行われるこのキャンペーンは、精神疾患の持つネガティブなイメージを払拭し、身体疾患のように誰でもかかる可能性のある病気として一般に認知されることを目的とし、スティーヴン・フライやレイ・デイヴィスなど、自らも精神疾患に悩むセレブなどもサポートしている。

ローマ時代の詩人・ホラティウスによって最初に記されてから、古代から現代に至るまで、黒犬はうつの隠喩として使われており、第二次大戦時の首相・ウィンストン・チャーチルも自らの陰鬱な気分を「黒犬」で表したという。これらの黒犬像は、セレブやアーティスト、一般人がデザインした各々違ったデザインのコートをまとい、首には「collar of hope（希望の首輪）」と呼ばれるSANEのメンタルヘルス・ヘルプラインの情報が記された首輪を着けている。上の写真のキスマーク入りコートは、昔ボンドガールを演じた女優で、最近ではグルカ兵の権利保護を目指したGurkha Justice Campaignで有名な人権運動家・Joanna Lumley（ジョアンナ・ラムレイ）がデザインしたもの。

キャンペーンは「black dog parade（黒犬パレード）」で幕を閉じ、その後犬たちは、メンタルヘルスへの資金集めのためにオークションにかけられる予定。

This is one of the 40 black dog sculptures placed across London by mental health charity SANE, as a part of a “Black Dog Campaign” to raise awareness of depression and mental health, running throughout the organisation’s 25th anniversary year from July 2011-July 2012.  The goal of the campaign is to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness and to normalise it to be perceived like any physical condition. The campaign is backed by celebrities including Stephen Fry, Ray Davies, Clive Anderson and Rory Bremner.

First coined by the Roman poet Horace, the metaphor of the “black dog” for depression has been used from ancient time to the present day, and is adopted by Winston Churchill to describe his darker mood. Each black dog wears a ‘coat’ designed by celebrities, artists and members of the public, along with a ‘collar of hope’ that gives details of SANE’s mental health helpline. The coat in the photo above is designed by Joanna Lumley, British actress and also known as human rights activist who recently involved in the Gurkha Justice Campaign.

The campaign will culminate in a ‘black dog parade’ this year before the dogs are put on auction to raise funds for mental health.

テレグラフ紙のTOP 50 ‘TYPICALLY BRITISH’ TRAITS（典型的なイギリス人の特徴のトップ50）の堂々2位にランクインしている「Queueing（列を作って待つこと）」は、同じく行列好きの日本人以外の外国人がイギリスに来た時に最初に学ぶべきマナーと言われるほど、イギリス人の日常生活に不可欠の行為。しかし買い物時の行列は、忙しい現代イギリス人に敬遠され、その多くがオンラインショッピングに流れる傾向にあるという。

2000年にイギリスに設立されたオンラインベースの市場調査会社、YouGovが行った調査によると、消費者が列を作って待たないといけないと仮定した質問において、59％の買い物客は列に並ぶのを嫌がり、32％がオンラインショッピング、18％が他の店に行くと解答した。結果、レジ待ちの列が長いと（ロンドンではその確立は高い）、数多くの消費者が繁華街にあるお店に背を向け、その結果、毎年2065万ポンドもの売上げが失われているという。行列の原因として、89％の買い物客が店員の数が充分でないことをあげ、23％は支払い方法に時間がかかり過ぎていると解答した。

確かに買い物の際のレジ待ちは鬱陶しいし、広い店でも店員を捜すのに苦労し、あげく簡単な質問するだけでも、列で待たなければならないのには、うんざりする。でも、私がオンラインショッピング好きなのはそれだけが理由じゃなく、オンラインショッピングが実に便利だから（さすがに服は自分で見て着て、似合うかチェックして買うけれど）。その商品を探すのも、店の比較も、在庫確認も簡単だし、いちいちバスや地下鉄に乗って店に行く必要もない。送料無料の店もあるし、マイレージやポイントが貯まるのも魅力的。実際に商品を見れないのがネックだけれど、返品も近くの郵便局に行くだけで済む。

テレグラフ紙の記事によると、55歳以上の年代がイギリスのオンラインショッピング最大の顧客層で（私はまだそのグループには属していないけれど）、その86％が日常的にオンラインで買い物をし、3分の1以上がほとんどの買い物はオンラインで済ませ、6％が将来全ての買い物はオンラインでするだろうとの調査結果があるという。イギリス人は、実際の店で費やす倍以上の時間をオンラインで物色し、平均週2.4時間をオンラインショッピングに使っている。ちなみに月平均で、男性（計£273.15：オンライン£127.93、実際の店舗£145.22）の方が女性（計£212.78：オンライン£105.42、実際の店舗£107.36 ）より30％以上買い物をするそうだ。

果たしてこれからの時代、街中のお店はオンラインショップにどう太刀打ちしていくのか？

Queueing is the second on TOP 50 ‘TYPICALLY BRITISH’ TRAITS (Telegraph article), and that’s what a foreigner has to learn first when move to UK. However,  busy British in modern time tend to avoid queueing and instead, go online for shopping.

YouGov, an internet-based market research firm launched in the UK in 2000, conducted a study based on a hypothetical scenario in which consumers were asked questions that involved queuing. The result reveals that 59% of shoppers wouldn’t want to wait in a queue and 32% would turn to online retailers, while 18% would go to an alternative shop. This research shows that a significant number of shoppers turn their backs on a high street shop if the queues are too long (which is often the case), and the retailers loose £20.65 million every year. As the cause of queues, 89% of consumers cited an insufficient number of staff members, while 23% thought slow payment methods.

Yes, queueing is very annoying. It is also true that there is not much assistance available in the store and often I have to look for an available staff all over a store , or to queue even for just a quick question. But these are not the reasons I go online (except clothing – I want to see actual products with my own eyes, touch it, and try it on to see how I look) – because online shopping is much more convenient and can buy everything with advantages; easy to look for the product, to compare the stores, and to check availability; no need for travel with a bus or tube; free shipping service many online shops offer; and can earn mileage and points with some stores. The negative point is that you cannot see the actual products, but I can return if I don’t like by just going to nearby post office.

According to an Telegraph article, other survey revealed the over-55s, now make up the UK’s biggest group of online shoppers (though I am not the member of it, yet!), with 86% shopping regularly online, more than a third doing their majority of shopping online, and 6% expecting to do all their shopping online in the future. British spend double the time browsing shops online than they do on the high street, and spend over 2.4 hours/week shopping online on average. Each month, men spend nearly a third more than women with an average of £273.15 (£127.93 online and £145.22 in store) compared to £212.78 (£105.42 online and £107.36 in store) for women.

How can high street retailers compete with online retailers??

Time Out誌をパラパラとめくっていたら、Old StreetとHoxton Squareの間にある通り、Pitfield Streetが今Hipに変わりつつあるという（→Time Out記事）。私たちがこの近辺をうろつくようになった頃は、うらぶれたパブやケバブショップ、エスニック系食品＆雑貨店などが数軒あるだけの何の変哲もない通りだったが、オールドストリート駅＆ホクストンから至近というその好立地のおかげか、近年、洒落たヘアサロンや自転車ショップ＆ジュースバー（私たちもここで自転車のメンテをお願いしている）が次々とオープン。和風カフェのようなたたずまいの日本人経営？のタトゥーショップまでできた。

その中で見覚えのない店が1軒、知らない間にオープンしていたのがこのPitfield。上階にオフィスを構えるインテリア・デザイナー経営の、無国籍＆時代を超えた、スタイリッシュでカラフルな生活用品・ヴィンテージ雑貨などを扱うお店だ（→Time Outの店紹介）。

早速併設のカフェでランチしてみた。オープン間もなく、ランチタイムの後を狙って行ったのに、客が列を作って注文を待っている。カウンターのは上段はflatbread（ピタパンのような平たいパン）のサンドイッチが置かれ、下段はタルトやケーキ、そしてさらに進むとラザーニャやキッシュ、サラダなどのデリフードが入った大皿が並ぶ。スタッフは皆フランス語で話しているので、食べ物への期待度が少し高まる。Mはベジタリアン・ラザーニャ、私はハムとチーズのキッシュをオーダー。温めて出してくれるのはうれしい。が、味の方は期待外れ。マズくはないけど、キッシュは皮が硬く、サクサク感が全くない。付け合わせのサラダもドレッシングなしで味気ない。気を取り直して、アーモンドケーキと紅茶、エスプレッソを注文（写真）。ホットドリンクは、ヴィンテージ？風？のiittala（イッタラ）のカップで出てくる。アーモンドケーキも感動するほど上出来な訳じゃなく、フランスならせめてスウィーツは美味しい筈と信じていたから、ちょっとがっかり。でも辺りに気の利いたカフェがないので、この近辺では使える場所だ。

When I was checking the Time Out magazine, I saw an article talking about Pitfield Street, located in between Old Street and Hoxton Square. When we moved in the neighbourhood and started to walk around the area, the Pitfield was nothing more than shabby street with few gloomy pubs, kebab shops, and ethnic grocery shops. However, with this excellent location just next to Hoxton, recently this “stubbornly grotty” (Time Out says. Not me!) street has started to change, and some hip hair salons, bike shop & juice bar (where we brought our bikes for maintenance), and even Japanese tatoo parlor which looks more like modern café than scary tatoo salon (→Time Out article).

We tried out the café on our visit to the shop. Surprisingly there was a queue after lunch time. Flatbread sandwiches occupy top half of the showcases and a variety of good-looking cakes and tarts sit on the bottom . When moving closer to the cashier, voilà, big dishes of deli food such as quiches, salads, and lasagne appeared. Staffs were talking in French and this heightened my expectation for the food. M ordered vegetable lasagne and I got ham and cheese quiche. The dishes were warmed up, which is a plus, but I was a bit disappointed – the shell of my quiche was too hard and couldn’t easily cut with fork (there was no knife in their cutlery box), and the side salad didn’t have any taste without dressing. We were like, “ok, let’s move on and try world-renown ‘French’ cake”. After the meal, we had an almond bar, espresso and tea. Hot drinks are served with vintage? (or looking?) iittala cup & saucer. A little bit of good touch. Almond cake was not bad but not jaw-dropping. I guess my expectation was too high… However, there is no other nice café around, so the café is still useful and won’t fail, I believe.

先日、Yumchaaでランチを食べそこねたので（→昨日のエントリー参照）、どうしたものかと辺りをぶらぶらしてたら、Charlotte Place（Lantanaと同じ通り）で、このイタリアン・カフェ・In Parma by Food Rootsを見つけた。入口には大きな塊のパルメザン・チーズがどんと置かれ、壁には吊るされた生ハムと錆びた鉄で出来たオブジェ（＊最初は「木のオブジェ」と書いていたけれど、これを造ったアーティスト・Stefano Devoti氏から間違いを指摘されました）。茶色いレンガ壁に木製家具が並ぶ小さな店内は、ナチュラルカラーでカントリー・シックにまとめられている。奥の壁には、パルマハム（イギリスではプロシュット・ディ・パルマをこう呼ぶ）の作り方や歴史を紹介する映像が投影されている。カウンターには手作りケーキ、奥の棚にはワインやイタリアの様々な地方のドライミートやチーズを挟んだサンドイッチ（£4前後）が並ぶ。オープンしたばかりなのか、サービスはぎこちないけれど、スタッフはフレンドリー。

この日のランチは、トスカーナ名物野菜の煮込みスープ・リボッリータ、パルマハムとパルメザンチーズのサンドイッチ、そしてアルト・アディジェ州特産のSpeck（スペック）とタレッジョ・チーズのサンドイッチ。スープは思ったより具沢山ではないけれど、なかなか美味。軽くトーストした新鮮な食材を使ったサンドイッチもなかなかいける。ただ、お皿は陶器製なのに、何故かチープなプラスチックのカトラリーとともにプラスチックのトレーにのって出てきたのが、紙製スープ皿も含め（プラスティックよりマシだけど）、センスのいいインテリアにそぐわず、ちょっと貧乏臭くて残念。イートインの場合、プラスチック類は使わないほうが環境にもいいし、洗う手間はかかっても、高級感を維持できていいと思うのだけれど。できればこの点の改善を望みたい。

新しいお店だからか、店のウェブサイトもレビューも見当たらず。名刺にはオープン時間さえ記されていないけれど、ランチの他、夕方（夜？）は、ワインとシャルキトリー（charcuterie：フランス語で、 ハム、ソーセージ、テリーヌなどの、豚肉加工食品）が楽しめるそう。

We found this new Italian café, In Parma by Food Roots, on Charlotte Place (same street with Lantana), while we were looking for a place to eat as we missed to eat lunch at Yumchaa the other day (→see yesterday’s entry). A big block of Parmigiano-Reggiano at the entrance, lumps of Parma ham hanging from the ceiling, and rusted iron objects on the walls (*Originally I wrote “wooden” objects, but it was corrected by Mr. Stefano Devoti, the artist who made those. Many thanks to him to let me know the mistake!). This cozy space with brown brick walls and wooden furnitures is pleasantly finished in natural country-chic style. You can learn how Parma ham is made and its history on  a video, projected on the back wall.

Handmade cakes at the counter, and Italian wines and a variety of sandwiches with regional charcuteries and cheese (around  £4) displayed on the wooden shelves. The service was a bit clumsy, I assume that it just opened very recently, but the staffs were fairly friendly to compensate it. Our order of the day was: Toscan vegetable soup Ribollita, a sandwich with Parma ham and Parmesan cheese, and a sandwich with Speck from South Tyrol and Taleggio cheese. The first dish, Ribollita was quite nice, though there was not much vegetables in it. Then slightly toasted sandwiches came. Sandwiches with fine and fresh ingredients were not bad as well, however, they were served on ceramic plates but on top of cheap plastic trays with plastic cutleries. The plastics, as well as paper cup for soup (though better than plastic) are neither ecological nor sophisticated, and don’t go well with the atmosphere of the café! When eating-in (except fast food), I prefer not to use plastics (that makes me feel a bit depressing), but at least reusable well-designed plastics. I know it is pain in the neck to clean dirty dishes, but hope they change this bad habit in near future.

I couldn’t find their website or any reviews, I guess it is too new, and I don’t have much information other than the address and phone number, even opening hours. According to their small information card, they also serve wines and charcuterie platters in the evening (night?), as well as lunch.

お茶専門店＆ティーハウスのミニチェーン・Yumchaaが、Googde Street（グッジ・ストリート）駅近くのTottenham Street（トッテナム・ストリート）にもオープンした（響きは飲茶／ヤムチャに近いけれど中華料理店ではない）。いつも混んでいて席を確保するのが大変なSOHO店（→SOHO店の過去の記事はこちら）に比べると、一回りも二回りも大きい。カウンターには、ミルクポットに入ったティーリーフのサンプル、手作りのケーキ類が並び、サンドイッチやスープなどの軽食もいただける。

私たちはランチに行ったのだけれど、サランラップに包まれた、お世辞にも美味しそうには見えない長細いサンドイッチにはどうも食欲をそそられず、お茶だけに。White Tea（白茶）の中から、白牡丹（パイムータン）、ラベンダー、エジプト産カモミールの花、レモングラスをブレンドした「Tranquillity（トランクィリティ）」（小ポット入り£2.55）を注文。さすがはお茶の専門店、高品質の茶葉で淹れたお茶は、ほのかで爽やかな香り、すっきりした味わいで、とても美味しい。Tranquility＝静穏、落ち着きという名前だけあって、心なしかほっとする味。もし気に入ったブレンドに出会ったら、店内で茶葉も購入できる。食べ物はともかく、美味しいお茶をカジュアルに飲みたい時は是非。

A small chain of tea house & shops, Yumchaa also opened on Tottenham Street near Googde Street Tube station. In compare to SOHO branch (→past entry is here), where is always crowded and hard to spot an empty seat, the space is double or triple of its size and can find a seat if you are not picky in seating choice. At the counter, loose tea leaf samples in small milk jugs as well as freshly made cakes are displayed. Sandwiches and soups are also available if you want something savoury.

We went there for lunch, but the long sandwiches wrapped in cling film didn’t look great, so we just had a cup of tea. Among the selection of white Tea, I chose ‘Tranquillity’, a blend of Pai Mu Tan, Lavender, Egyptian camomile flowers and Lemongrass (small pot: £2.55). This cup of tea, brewed with quality loose tea leaves, created gentle and soothing aroma, and its refreshing taste was very nice, as its name ’Tranquillity’ suggests. If you encounter a blend you really love, you can also purchase the tea leaves in the premise. I am not sure about the food as I’ve never tried, but highly recommend when you want a delicious cup of tea in a casual setting.

Northern lights（オーロラ）が今夜、ロンドンでも見れるかもしれない！？

通常、極域近くにしか現れないオーロラだが、約11年のサイクルで太陽の活動が高まり、「太陽風」と呼ばれるプラズマ粒子が地球上により強力に降下することによって、より緯度の低いエリアでもオーロラが発生するのだそうだ。ここ数日がその時に当たり、日曜夜からスコットランド、北イングランド、北アイルランドでオーロラが観察されており（→写真：テレグラフ記事）、水曜日まで、一定の条件が揃い、かつ運が良ければ、ロンドンを含む南イングランドでも見られる可能性があるそうだ。地球磁場の活動状態によるが、澄んだ空と暗闇が必要。田舎の方が都会より可能性が高く、明るい月夜は難しい。概して午後10時頃から午前2時頃、北の方角に発生するので、その時間帯に北の方を観察するのが（場所によりけりだそうだが）、オーロラに遭遇するチャンスが高くなる。

オーロラは、北スコットランドでは珍しくないそうだが、南イングランドではなかなか見られず、最後にロンドンで観察されたのは1939年とのこと。可能性はあまり高くないみたいだ。

Beautiful northern lights, Aurora or the Aurora Borealis, can be seen in London tonight?!

Normally taking place close to the Arctic, but every 11 years or so, an increase in solar activity causes unusually powerful explosions of particles, to make aurora able to be seen further south. Now is the time. Since late Sunday, aurora has been observed in Scotland, northern England and northern Ireland (→photos: Telegraph), and can be seen until Wednesday, possibly as south as London, with luck and under certain conditions: right magnetic activity which is highly variable; clear skies; and darkness without bright moonlight. Higher probability in the countryside than the city. For the best chance, look to the north which is the direction aurora is usually seen, though it depends where you are, around midnight from 10 pm to 2 am.

Aurora is not uncommon in northern Scotland, but fairly rare in south England and last appearance of this size was in 2003, and the last recording sightings of aurora in London was in 1939.

ブログに書くネタの情報収集をする時、よく行き当たるのがこの「Londonist」ウェブサイト。既にご存知の方も多いかもしれないけれど、私自身もう少しこのサイトのことを知りたいと思って、ちょっと調べてみた。

Londonistは、「website about London and everything that happens in it」（自身のfacebook infoより）、ロンドンとロンドンで起きる様々な出来事をカバーするウェブサイトで、ニュース、イベント、レビュー、アート、カルチャー、ファッション、レストラン＆バー、交通、スポーツ、そしてロンドンの歴史や将来まで、何でも来い。そのトピックも、メジャーなものだけでなく、エキセントリックだったり、ちょっと変わった出来事、面白いエピソード、誰も知らない裏話など、ロンドンの違った側面も紹介している。

このサイトは2004年に、一都市に特化した、ニューヨーク発祥のブログネットワーク（Gothamist・ニューヨークの愛称、ゴッサム・シティから取られたと思われる）の一員として立ち上げられた。2006年には、イギリスで最も影響のあるトップブログ50位の一つにランクされ（Hospital Clubより）、2010年にはガーディアン紙の「Top London Blogger」にも選ばれた。同じ2010年には、Gothamistの手からLDN Creativeに移り、Gothamistから独立した提携先となった（Wikipedia / Londonistより）。

ウェブサイトは、良くいえばシンプル、悪くいえば特徴のないデザインだけれど、情報量は豊富。その素晴らしい情報収集力、そしてその情報アップのスピードは、多くの印刷メディア、ロンドンローカルの情報サイトを凌駕している。1万5,605人（本日付）もの人たちが、Londonistのfacebookページで「like」する、ロンドンの住人に支持されているLondonist。私にとっては、雲の上の存在だけれど、ブロガーとして少しでも近づければ、嬉しい。

When I surf over the internet, looking for information for my blog, I sometimes find it within Londonist website. Probably many of you already know about it, but I myself want to know more about it so I researched a bit, and write about it to salute their effort to brighten up us Londoners’ rather boring life otherwise.

Londonist is a comprehensive “website about London and everything that happens in it”, according to its facebook info. It covers news, events, reviews, arts, culture, fashion, restaurants and bars, transports, and sports, as well as history and future of London – literally anything. The website not only deals with mainstream topics but also talks about the other side of the city – eccentricities, quirks, secrets, and surprises.

Londonist was founded in 2004, as a part of US-based Gothamist‘s city-centric blog network. By 2006 it was ”ranked in the UK’s 50 most influential blogs” (the Hospital Club), and was awarded the Guardian’s “Top London Blogger” in 2010. In the same year in 2010, Londonist was transferred to the London-based startup LDN Creative and became an independently-operated affiliate of Gothamist (Wikipedia / Londonist).

A look of the website is simple and rather generic, but all what you want to know is likely there. They seem to have loads of excellent informants – their up-to-date information comes out very fast and covers all around the city, beating many print media and London local news sources. Massive 15,606 people  (as of today) “like” the Londonist on its facebook page. It is an achievement!

イギリスも持つ魅力を世界に売り込むため、キャメロン首相が昨年9月に立ち上げた「GREAT Campaign」。エリザベス女王の即位60周年の記念式典・ダイヤモンド・ジュビリー（6月2〜5日）とロンドン・オリンピックが開催される特別な年にあたる2012年、そしてそれ以降も、UK Trade and Investment（英国貿易投資総省）、Culture Department（文化省）、Foreign Office（外務省）、Visit Britain（英国政府観光庁ホームページ）など政府をあげて取り組み、貿易・投資促進、観光客誘致など、観光・ビジネスなどの分野で計10億ポンドの増収を期待する。

これらのイメージは、Countryside（田舎：スコットランドのグレンフィナン陸橋）、Creativity（創造力：ウォレスとグルミット）、 Entrepreneurs（起業家：ヴァージン・グループ創設者サー・リチャード・ブランソン）、Green（再生可能エネルギー技術：イーストロンドンのオリンピック競輪場）、Heritage（歴史：ヘンリー8世）、Innovation（イノベーション：スコットランドの健康関連会社Touch Bionics）、Knowledge（知識：ケンブリッジ大学 コーパス・クリスティ・カレッジ）、Music（音楽：レディング・フェスティバル）、Shopping（ショッピング：セルフリッジズ靴ギャラリーにあるNicholas Kirkwoodのパンプス）、Sport（スポーツ：マンチェスター・シティFC対フラムFCの試合）の計10個のテーマで作られた、キャンペーン用イメージで、ポスターやポストカード、広告などに使われている。スタイリッシュでセンスのいいインパクトのあるデザインで、クール・ブリタニアを謳うだけある。でも、Great Britainとかけているのは分かるけれど、赤字で「GREAT」のオンパレードはちょっと偉そうに聞こえるかも？？

The GREAT Campaign has been launched in September 2011 by Prime Minister David Cameron to promote Britain abroad for investment and tourism, focusing on everything the UK has to offer as one of the very best places to visit, study, work, invest and do business. The “GREAT” campaign hopes to create a £1 billion boost for businesses and bring in four million extra foreign tourists, especially in this special  year of 2012, when UK hosts the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebration (June 2-5) and the London Olympic and Paralympics. The UK Trade and Investment, the Culture Department, the Foreign Office, Visit Britain and other government departments will work together on the campaign to bring in the business and tourists from now and beyond 2012.

ロンドン・オリンピック開催まで200日を切った（正確に言うと192日）。Tube（ロンドン地下鉄）各駅やBlackfriars（ブラックフライアーズ）駅、 Farrindon（ファリンドン）駅などの鉄道駅の改装といったインフラの整備や、様々な建設工事がロンドン市内のあちこちで急ピッチで進められており、オリンピックが近づいていることを感じさせる。もっともロンドンの住人は、犬も歩けば棒に当たるじゃないけれど、行く先々で遭遇する工事現場の騒音や通行止め、道幅減少などに閉口しているけれど。

そして、イギリスの国営放送BBCが去年7月に立ち上げたオリンピック特集ウェブサイト・BBC 2012もこの度お化粧直しされた。このサイトは、ニュース、スポーツ、ドラマ、アート、カルチャー、コメディ、交通情報や役立つ情報など、BBCのオンライン、テレビ、ラジオのオリンピック関連コンテンツ（ライブ、ビデオ、オーディオ、写真、インタビュー、裏話など）が一堂に集められているので、ロンドン・オリンピック委員会のLondon 2012とともに、オリンピックや関連イベントの情報収集に便利かも。→詳細はBBCブログで

It is less than 200 days (precisely saying, 192 days) to go til London Olympic 2012, and all kinds of constructions and building works, including maintenance works of some tube stations and revamping rail stations such as Blackfriars station and Farrindon station, now seem to be speeding up and this make us feel the Olympic is coming. Exciting, though many Londoners complain the noise, reduced road width and diversion caused by never-ending works that we encounter every corner of the city.

BBC, British national broadcaster that most of you already know, has changed the look of BBC 2012, a website launched last July, dedicated to London Olympic. The site showcases a variety of contents arising from the London Olympic and Paralympic Games, ie. news, sport, drama, arts, culture, comedy, traffics as well as other useful info, gathered from BBC’s online, television and radio, in the form of live coverage, video and audio clips, background stories, pictures and cast interviews. 住人の過半数が国外生まれというインターナショナルなロンドン。ナイジェリアをはじめとするアフリカ大陸の旧植民地の国々出身の人たちも多く住むにも関わらず、それらの国のレストランは、そのお国の人たちが住むエリア外やセントラル・ロンドンではほとんど見かけない、というのがMの大いなる疑問だ。エチオピア料理店は、キングスクロス駅北部などエチオピア人地区を中心に何軒かあるのみだった。それが最近、ホルボーンの近くのTheobald’s Roadで、偶然1軒見つけたので行ってみた。

店名は何故か、エチオピアと言うよりスイスを思わせる、「Alps（アルプス）」。「Ethio Modern European Restaurant & Bar」を謳い、外の看板にはハンバーガー、メニューには、エチオピア料理とともに、グリル・ラムやステーキなど西洋料理が並び、店に入る前は？？だった。お店のスタッフによると、先々週土曜にオープンしたばかりとのこと。イギリス・レトロ風店内に、赤を基調としたモダンなテーブルと椅子、そしてエチオピア民芸品のデコレーションと、普通考えられない取り合わせが妙にキッチュだ。

西洋料理をここで食べる意味が全くないので、適当にメニューから、Zilzil Tibs（味付けしてマリネした細切れの牛肉をオニオン、ガーリック、ハラペーニョと一緒にソテーしたもの）、Yebeg Alecha Fitfit（骨付きラム肉を緑ピーマン・ソースで調理し、インジェラを加えたもの）、そして名前は忘れたけれど煮込んだスパイシーなsplit peas（さやをむいて乾燥させたエンドウ豆）の、エチオピア料理3皿を注文（エチオピア料理は一律£7。西洋料理は値段は様々）。店はガラガラなのに待たされること約20分。ようやく、フレンドリーでイケメンのエチオピア人シェフの手によって、大きなお盆に載せられたエチオピアの主食・インジェラと、3皿の料理が運ばれ、汁気の多いZilzil Tibsを除く（汁が多いとインジェラがベチョベチョになってしまうため）2皿を、インジェラの上に空ける。食べ方はトレーの上のインジェラをちぎりながら料理と一緒に右手で食べる。また、余分のインジェラがかごに入れて出されるので、それを食べてもいい。（エチオピア料理参考サイト）

そして、エチオピアと言えばコーヒー。現地では、コーヒーを頂く時に、コーヒー・セレモニー（カリオモン／Kariomon）があるらしく、セレモニーを執り行う女性とその様子が描かれたタペストリーが店の奥に飾られている。まずテーブルにはエキゾチックなお香が焚かれ、そして小さなフライパンを持ったシェフが登場。目の前でコーヒー豆を煎り、その良い香りを堪能する。シェフ曰く、現地では客は待っている間、ポップコーン（ファンディシャ）を食べながら待つらしいが、この日はさすがにポップコーンまでは出てこなかった。そして、大きな素焼きコーヒーポット（ジャバナ）から、持ち手のない小さなカップに、出来たてのコーヒーがサーブされる。煎りたて、淹れたてのコーヒーの味はエスプレッソ程強くなく、まろやかで美味しい。3杯飲むのが正式な飲み方らしいが、この日は2杯飲んで失礼した。

ゆったりと時間が流れ、エチオピア文化や習慣も楽しめるこのAlps。面白い経験が出来たけれど、お客が多くなったら、シェフの彼は、このように時間のかかるサービスはできるかしら？？？

London is the cosmopolitan city, where half of its residents were born abroad. There are also lots of Londoners originated from former colonies in African continents such as Nigeria or Ghana, but normally restaurants of their cuisines are only located within their community and are rarely seen in Central London – this is one of (many) questions M has of London. Ethiopian restaurants are one of the examples and you can see only some, mainly on the north of Kings Cross station. However, we happened to find one on Theobald’s Road near Holborn.

Its name “Alps“, sounds more Swiss than Ethiopian. As “Ethio Modern European Restaurant & Bar” written on the window, it serves also western dishes such as grilled lamb and hamburger, as well as Ethiopian food. This confused us a bit, but we tried the place anyways. According to an Italian staff (it is more confusing!), Alps just opened on January 7. Another unimaginable combination of British retro look, modern red tables & chairs and black lamp shades, and traditional Ethiopian decoration with handicrafts and painting, is quite quirky and kitsch.

There was no point to eat European food for us there, so we randomly picked three Ethiopian dishes – Zilzil Tibs (seasoned & marinated strips of beef sauteed with onions, garlic & jalapeno), Yebeg Alecha Fitfit (piece of lamb with bones cooked in mild green pepper sauce mixed with injera before being served), and cooked spicy split peas (I forgot its name). After waiting for 20 minutes (though the place was totally empty), charming & friendly chef came out from the kitchen and served us the dishes and a tray with huge Ethiopian bread injera. He emptied two dishes except Zilzil Tibs (it has much fluid and makes injera hard to grab). He told us to rip injera and eat together with the food, or with extra injera served on a basket if you prefer (Wikipedia).

After the meal, then the most famous export from Ethiopia – coffee. In Ethiopia, the ritual of coffee ceremony (Kariomon) is commonly practiced when making and drinking coffee. You can see the scene of the ceremony with a woman who serves coffe, on a tapestry hanged on the back of the restaurant. The interesting thing in the tapestry is that a bowl of popcorn next to the coffee set – the chef explained that the guests eat popcorns while waiting for coffee (though we didn’t get it that day). First burning traditional incense was brought to our table. Then the chef came back with a small pan, roasting coffee beans, to let us enjoy the smell. Then poured freshly brewed coffee was poured from ceramic pot (jebena) into small handleless cups. It was very tasty and not as strong as I thought.

Here at Alps, time passed slowly, quite unlikely in London, and we enjoyed experiencing and learnning Ethiopian culture and tradition. But my question is – can he (the chef) handle these meticulous acts when he encounters loads of customers in his place??
