カフェイン中毒のMは、通常、カフェブログやら新聞やら雑誌やら、色んなところから新しいカフェ情報を入手してくる。でもこのAssociationは、滅多に訪れないシティで偶然見つけた。オフィス街のシティより、ヒップなイーストロンドンの方が似合うこの洒落たカフェ、ビジネスピープルたちにも大人気のようだ。

ウェブサイトによると、Associationはコーヒーに情熱を注いでおり、通常のエスプレッソブレンドの他、ほぼ週変わりの季節に応じたブレンドが楽しめる。また、Stove Top（イタリアのマキネッタのように、直火で抽出するコーヒーメーカー）、French Press、Filter Coffeeなど抽出法に応じたコーヒー豆や、家庭用コーヒー抽出用器具も販売している。コーヒー以外にも、紅茶、見た目はぱっとしないが（失礼）良質の材料で作ったペイストリーやケーキ、サンドイッチなどもある（menu / 仕入れ先リスト）。コーヒーへの並々ならぬこだわりは感じられるが、残念ながら私たちのエスプレッソとフラット・ホワイトは平均並み。フラット・ホワイトは、ラテかと思うほどコーヒーが薄く、しかも少しぬるかい。ただ今時のインテリアの店内は広々としていて、木製ボードにのせて食べ物をサーブするなど、プレゼンテーションも気が利いている。シティはチェーンのコーヒー店ばかりで、美味しいコーヒーが飲める独立系のカフェがほとんどないので、Associationは貴重な存在。シティに行く際は、再挑戦してみたい。

Normally caffeine junkie M finds a new cafe from all kinds of sources such as cafe blogs, newspapers & magazines etc, but we found the Association by chance, when we walked through the City, where we rarely visit. This good looking cafe looks more fitting in hip East London, rather than corporate City of London, but was very popular among business people.

According to their website, the Association is all about coffee, and offer a range of seasonal coffees as well as their regular espresso. They also sell bags of coffee for for a Stove Top, a French Press or a Filter Coffee, as well as a range of home brewing equipment. Aside from coffee, they also offer teas, simple pastries and cakes, and sandwiches (menu), using the best of ingredients (suppliers list), although they don’t have big variety. Sounds great, and I feel a lot of passion from them. However, we found their coffee (espresso & flat white) were average. My flat white was not strong enough but more like latte, and was not hot enough… But the place is chic & spacious, and their presentation of food on a wood board is very cute. We will try again when we go to the City, where there are very few great independent coffee shops other than chains.

ふと見たカフェに貼ってあったこのステッカー。何だろうと思って調べてみたら、これはシティ・オブ・ロンドンのCommunity Toilet Scheme (CTS)の一環で、域内の参加店が店内のトイレを一般に開放する代わりに、シティが「contribution」を与える仕組み。詳細は書いていないから、contributionが何を意味するのか不明だが、対価＝お金を支払うということか？参加店は、状況によっては、トイレ利用を断る権利を有するともある。怪しい人たちにはトイレは貸さないということか。トイレ利用の際、何かを買ったり注文したりしなくても良い前提ではあるけれど、利用した人たちは罪悪感からか、何かを買ったりする人も少なからずいるらしいので、店にとってもメリットはあるようだ。参加店は、シティ・オブ・ロンドンのウェブサイトでチェック可能。

I saw this sticker on one of restauranst in the City. I am curious about what it is and checked it out. According to the City of London website, City’s Community Toilet Scheme (CTS) is to provide toilet facilities available to the public with partnership with local businesses, supplementing the City’s facilities. In exchange for providing free access to toilets to the public, the City pays a ‘contribution’ to participating businesses, though they still retains the right to refuse admission in exceptional circumstances. There is no details of ‘contribution’ means, but maybe money? Anyways, this scheme brings win-win to everyone involved. It is reported that people using their toilets often do make a purchase, though they don’t need to buy anything. You can check participating businesses on their websites.

この小さくて可愛いパン屋＆カフェ・Hoxton Bakeryは、先月Hoxton streetにオープンした。正確には「開店」ではなく、以前いたエリアに戻ってきた、といった方が正しい。オーナーは1999年に、ホクストン・ストリートで「Flour Power」というベーカリーを創業。品質の良い材料を使い、食品添加物等を極力使用しないパン作りをし、成功を収めた。その後、グルメが集まるBorough Market内に移転、現在でも「Bread Ahead」という屋台でパンを売っている。その彼らが、新しいプロジェクトとして、古巣のホクストン・ストリートに再度店をオープンさせた。カフェも併設する店内では、手作りローフの他、ソーセージロールやケーキ、ドーナツ等も扱う。コーヒーは飲んだことがないが、古いラ・マルゾッコでいれた「Nude」ブレンドのエスプレッソは決して不味くない筈。

This small artisan bakery & coffee shop, Hoxton Bakery has opened in Hoxton street last month. Strictly saying, ‘open’ is not the correct word – they returned to their old area. The owner of the Hoxton Bakery founded a bakery called ‘Flour Power’ in Hoxton Street back in 1999, and made the artisan breads, using good ingredients and avoiding unnecessary additives. After the success of ‘Flour Power’, they moved to prestigious Borough Market and still run their independent bakery stalls ‘Bread Ahead‘. Now they have returned to Hoxton Street to supply a great loaf and great coffee, as well as some other goodies, to their neighbours. We got very nice loaf + irresistible custard doughnuts (photos below).  We haven’t had a coffe yet, must be good, as they make espresso, using ‘Nude‘ blend from Brick Lane and old Marzocco espresso machine ;-)

人気カフェ・Look Mum No Hands!のすぐそば、オールドストリート沿いに数ヶ月前にできたTimberyard。広々としていて明るく、今風のインテリアでリラックスした雰囲気。地上・地下2フロアを有するこの大きなスペースで、人々は読書をしたり、コンピューターに向かったり、ミーティングをしたり、友人とお喋りしたりと、思い思いに時を過ごしている。Timberyardでは、特別にセレクトした生産者から食材やクオリティの高い紅茶、コーヒーを仕入れている。ラ・マルゾッコでJabberwockyブレンドのエスプレッソを入れ、そして紅茶を頼むと最も美味しく飲めるよう、最適時間をセットしたタイマーが一緒に出てくる。まさに優等生的なカフェだ。

私の初めての来店時は、非の打ち所はなかったのだが、私より一足先にランチしに来ているMは、ここのサンドイッチは普通、感動するほど美味しくはないと言う。私はお茶しただけなので何とも言えないのだが、確かにカウンターに並べられた食べ物を見ただけでは、特にそそられない。よっぽどお腹が空いて死にそうな時ならともかく、グラノーラとかポリッジ、キッシュとか食べないし、サンドイッチもここののようにパンにハムとかチーズとかを挟んだだけのものより、トーストした温かいサンドイッチの方が好き。スウィーツも、ブラウニーとかクッキーとか焼菓子系ばかりで、ケーキ好きの私の食指は動かない。私的にはこのカフェはお茶利用のみ、かな。

Another picture-perfect cafe on Old Street, few steps away from popular cafe Look Mum No Hands!. Hip, spacious, bright, and laid-back. In this large two-storey space, people enjoy reading, working, chatting, relaxing, meditating or whatever they want to do. Timberyard is a model cafe, offering speciality tea, coffee and artisan food sourced from carefully chosen producers. They brew their Jabberwocky blend espresso with La Marzocco with love, and serve teas with timer to ensure the perfect infusion.

Nothing to complain during my first trip to Timberyard. However, M who went there alone before (without telling me!), told me that their sandwich was OK, not great. I can’t judge myself, as I’ve never had food there. I like the place. Their tea & coffee are decent. But I am not sure about the food, judging by just looking at it. I don’t eat granolas, porridges, quiches and salads. I prefer toasties instead of just ham & cheese in between ‘artisan’ bread. And I am not a big brownie or cookie eater, unless I am starving. It is just my personal preference, and I rather enjoy just a cup of tea and ambience there.

Old Street駅の上のロータリーのすぐ南に位置するこの商業スペース、駅から至近距離という一等地にありながら、ここ何年間の間に何回もテナントが変わっている。私たちがお気に入りだったピザレストラン・Meter（写真下3枚）が数ヶ月でクローズした後、今年2月には、Rotaryというバー＆レストランがオープンした（地下のRotary Roomはメンバー制）。でもRotaryも今年末までという期限付き営業なので、来年にはまた違う店になっているんだろう。

クラーケンウェルにある姉妹店・Giant Robot同様、Rotary（アメリカ英語。イギリスではroundaboutという）もアメリカンスタイルのお店で、インテリアは70代風のキッチュなアメリカを体現し、ハンバーガーやチキンウィング、バーベキュー（近日提供予定）など典型的なアメリカ料理がメニューに並ぶ。私たちは、希少種の牛肉、ベーコン、チーズ、タマネギの入ったRotary burger（フライドポテト付きで£10 / 写真上）を注文。写真からも分かるように、色んなものをバンズに挟んでいるので崩壊寸前、しかもソースが多すぎるため、下のパンがソースを吸ってべたべたになっている。ミディアムの焼き具合の筈のパテは、80％が赤身で生肉を食べているよう。はっきりいって合格点以下。Meterの本格ピザ（写真下）が恋しい。。。

Tenants of a commercial property just south of Old Street roundabout have changed several times during the last few years, despite of its premium location with proximity to busy Old Street Tube station. After our favorite pizza restaurant Meter (3 photos below) had closed just after several months in business, this all-day until late-night bar & diner Rotary came in this location this February, with members-only Rotary Room downstairs. Rotary is a temporary venue and will close at the end of this year, so next year the place will be under someone else’s hand again.

Like their sister venue in Clerkenwell Giant Robot, Rotary (American word of roundabout) is also US style bar with the ambience of 70s American kitsch, serving American favorites such as burgers, chicken wings, and BBQ (coming soon). We had Rotary burger (£10 / photo above) with rare breed beef, bacon, cheese, onions, bun sauce, coming along with chips. As you can see in the photo it was falling part as so much stuffs between the buns, and the bottom bun was immersed with too much sauce. The meat should be medium cooked but was undercooked and 80% red. Disappointing. We miss the Meter’s yummy pizza (photo below)…

この２週間、前置きもなしにブログをお休みしてしまいました。通常お休みする前にはその前のブログでお知らせしているのですが、今回は忘れてしまったようです。ごめんなさい。。。

さて、今日Evening Standardを読んでいて、ヴァージン・グループの鉄道会社・Virgin Trainの新しい制服のブラウスが下着が透けて見えると、女性社員の怒りを買っているという記事があった。上の写真のように、胸の大きなグラマーなモデルを選んだのも、女性差別とも取れるこのセクシーな制服に話題性を持たせようという、Virgin Trainsまたはヴァージン・グループのリチャード・ブランソン会長の魂胆が見え見え。女性社員からは、新しいブラウスは、タイトすぎて体の線が出る、透けて見える、安っぽいと非難囂々。男性ビジネスマンのスケベ心を掴もうという戦略なのだろうが、これを見て思ったのは、Virgin Trainsはそんなに切羽詰まっているのか？ということ。そうでもなければ、ブラを隠す下着を買うために20ポンドの買い物券を従業員に渡してまで、こので窮屈で極めて動きにくい制服を強制する意味が分からない。

女性の地位の向上したイギリスのような先進国では、このような時代錯誤の戦略はとっくに消滅したと思っていた。尤も、金融街シティやカナリー・ワーフの投資銀行や法律事務所の秘書（ちなみにイギリスではPA / Personal Assistantsの略、と呼ぶ）の中には、いまだに体にピッタリとしたシャツにタイトスカート、ピンヒールといった格好をしている人もいるが。理由は言わずもがな。

I haven’t written this blog over two weeks, without putting excuse for a time-out on my last post. I normally warn my readers in advance – I am sorry…

I was reading Evening Standard today, and found the news about Virgin Train‘s new “see through” uniform blouse that has caused the anger among their female workers. Looking at the glamorous model with hourglass figure, showing off her boobies, I suspect that Virgin Trains (or the founder of Virgin Group that owns Virgin Trains, Sir Richard Branson?) intentionally chose her as a model to add more spark to this ‘sexist’ uniform. The blouse is blamed as skimpy, ‘see though’, cheap etc, etc by their female staff, and it is obvious that the blouse is meant to attract male customers. So first thing came in my mind when I saw it was, Virgin Trains is desperate. Otherwise, they wouldn’t force their employees to wear this uncomfortable and unpractical uniform, even offering £20 vouchers to buy underwear to cover-up.

I thought that this kind of tactic was over long time ago in civilised countries like UK, except some secretaries (or PA in UK) working for investment banks or prestigious law firms in the City or Canary Wharf – I wouldn’t bother to say why.

Look at those stiletto heels! How can she suppose to work like this?! I can’t walk even one step with those without falling down…

これは、オールドストリート駅の出口で見かけたサイン。イズリントン区によって書かれたこのサインは、元々「PLEASE DO NOT GIVE TO THE BEGGARS（ホームレスにお金をあげないでください）」だったのが、数日後に何者かの手で「PLEASE DO GIVE TO THE BEGGARS（ホームレスにお金をあげてください）」に変えられ（St John Street News website）、その後上のように「PLEASE DO GIVE DRUGS TO THE BEGGARS（ホームレスに麻薬をあげてください）」となったようだ。オールドストリート駅には合計8つの出口があり、その全てに書かれてるかどうか分からないけれど、flickrユーザーのStephen*Iliffeがアップしている、「PLEASE DO NOT GIVE DRUGS TO THE BEGGARS（ホームレスに麻薬をあげないでください）」の美しい白黒写真は、私が見たのと同じものだろうか？

警察によると、オールドストリート駅の物乞いはここ数年来の問題だったという。そのため、これらのサインとともに警察官の見回りを増やし、出口辺りに座ってお金を無心していたホームレス達は、駅から追い出されることとなった。イズリントンのホームページでは、ホームレスに直接お金を渡すのではなく、ホームレスのためのチャリティー団体に寄付して欲しいという。実際、ホームレスの慈善団体・Thames Reachによると、80％ものホームレスが、もらったお金は麻薬類購入に使っていると認めているそうだ。

Originally it was painted as “‘PLEASE DO NOT GIVE TO THE BEGGARS” by Islington Council, but few days later the sign were altered as “PLEASE DO GIVE TO THE BEGGARS”, according to St John Street News website, but now changed again sarcastically “PLEASE DO GIVE DRUGS TO THE BEGGARS,” as you see above. I am not sure if the signs painted on the ground of all eight exits, but I found one flickr user, Stephen*Iliffe, posted an artistic photo of the altered version, “PLEASE DO NOT GIVE DRUGS TO THE BEGGARS.”

According to the police, begging at Old Street station has been a problem for years, and beggars were forced to leave the station after this painting had been made and  increased police presence at the station. On their homepage, the Islington council asks people to not give to beggars, but make a donation to local homeless charities instead. Homelessness charity Thames Reach suggests that estimate 80% of people begging do so to support a drug habit (Guardian).

最近導入された「111」番は、緊急性の低い医療案件を扱うNHSの新しい無料電話番号。このNHS 111サービスでは、訓練を受けたアドバイザーが経験豊富な看護師のサポートで、通報者の症状を聞いて、アドバイスをしたり、必要な場合はA&E（救急病棟）や時間外診療を行う医者、urgent care centre（応急処置を施す診療所）、walk-in centre（予約不要の診療所）、近隣の看護師、緊急診療を受け付ける歯医者、深夜開業の薬局などに取り次いでくれる。6月から、以前からある同様のサービス・NHS Direct（0845 4647）に代わり、このNHS 111サービスが緊急でない要件を扱うようになる予定。

以下が、現在利用できるイギリス公共医療。

• 緊急の場合は「999」をダイヤル
• 緊急でない場合やよくある問題はかかりつけ医や地元薬局に電話
• かかりつけ医が休診中の場合や、上記2つで迷う時は「111」

詳しく言うと、以下の場合は「111」に電話する（NHS 111ウェブサイトより）。

• 健康上の助言が欲しいが、それほど緊急を要しない場合
• A&Eに行った方がいいと思う場合や、応急処置が必要だと思う場合
• 誰に相談していいか分からなかったり、電話できるかかりつけ医がいない場合
• 健康に関する情報が欲しい場合や、何をしたらいいか知りたい場合

でも新しいシステムに問題はつきもの、NHS 111サービスも例外ではない。British Medical Association (BMA)（イギリス医師会）は、患者のリスクを高めるとして、システム導入の延期を要請（Guardian / Daily Mail）。また、4月13日付のタイムズ紙によると、通報してから返答の電話がかかって来るまで長時間待たされ、困った人々が緊急性の高い999番に電話したことで救急車に混乱をきたしたとして、イングランド46地区のうち24地区でサービスの展開を延期した。BBCによると、折り返しの電話がかかって来るまで、11時間半待たされた人もいるそうだ。早くこのサービスが軌道に乗ってくれないと、怖くて病気になれない。。。

“111” is NHS’s new free-to-call phone number that you should remember for non-emergency medical problem. The NHS 111 service is staffed by a team of trained advisers, supported by experienced nurses. They will ask you questions to assess your symptoms, then give you the healthcare advice you need or direct you straightaway to the local service that can help you best, such as A&E, an out-of-hours doctor, an urgent care centre or a walk-in centre, a community nurse, an emergency dentist or a late-opening chemist. The 111 telephone advice line is expected to replace the similar NHS Direct service with lengthy number (0845 4647) in dealing with non-emergency calls in June.

Here is the list of the public medical services available now in UK.

• 999 for life threatening emergencies
• The number of your local GP surgery or local pharmacist for less urgent health needs and routine problems
• 111 for everything in between or for when your GP is closed

To be more precise, call 111 if (quoted from NHS 111 website):

• you need medical help fast but it’s not a 999 emergency
• you think you need to go to A&E or need another NHS urgent care service
• you don’t know who to call or you don’t have a GP to call
• you need health information or reassurance about what to do next

However, a new service always encounters problems, and NHS 111 is not an exception. British Medical Association (BMA) demanded for a delay in the launch of a NHS 111 helpline before it was introduced recently, saying it is putting patient safety at risk (Guardian / Daily Mail). According to the Times (April 13), the launch of the service had to be aborted in parts of the country, because it couldn’t cope or wasn’t ready. The roll-out had now been postponed in 24 of the 46 regions across England after people have been left waiting hours for answers to their queries and ambulance services had been overwhelmed as desperate callers resort to 999. BBC reported that one patient waited 11-and-a-half hours for a call back from the service. Hope it will start working well quite soon…

4月8日に87歳で亡くなったマーガレット・サッチャー元首相の葬儀が、本日セントポール大聖堂で行われた。1965年のウィンストン・チャーチル元首相以来、約半世紀ぶりに政治家の葬儀に参列したエリザベス女王夫妻や、キャメロン首相をはじめとする歴代政治家、約170カ国からの招待客など、2300人以上が元首相の死を悼んだ。元首相の棺がウェストミンスター国会議事堂からからセントポール大聖堂に運ばれる間も、沿道にはたくさんの市民が集まり、最後の別れを惜しんだ。→写真：Daily Mail

「鉄の女」と呼ばれた「Baroness Thatcher（イギリス人は称号をつけてこう呼ぶ）」は在任中、ご存知のように弱者切り捨てとみなされた「サッチャリズム」を断行。「sick man of Europe（ヨーロッパの病人）」と言われたイギリス経済を見事立て直した反面、その強硬な態度で敵も多く作った。サッチャー元首相が亡くなった日や今日の葬儀の際、抗議行動をする人たちもいたが、元首相の死を喜ぶパーティをしたり、元首相をかたどった首つり人形を吊るしたり、ひどいコメントを書いたプラカードを掲げたりと、死者の尊厳を無視するヒステリックなやり方には、ちょっと首を傾げたくなる（Guardian / Examiner）。相手は、まだまだ男尊女卑の強かった時代、しかも上流階級出身者の多い保守党の党首として（サッチャーは中流階級出身）イギリス初の女性元首となり、男性以上の強いリーダーシップをもって20世紀イギリスで最も長期間となる3期11年を務めあげた超人である。在任中、彼女に投票・支持した数多くの有権者、そして今日彼女の死を悼む大多数の人たち（ちなみに抗議する人たちは少数派）に対して失礼千万だ。「切り捨てられた」人には同情するし（それでも社会保障は他国に比べて恵まれていると思う）、その時代を生きた世代の人が抗議するならまだわかるが、抗議者の多くは、サッチャーが首相を務めていた頃はまだ生まれてもいない、流行の洋服に身を包んだ貧乏とも思えない若者たち。全く説得力がない。どんなに素晴らしいリーダーでも、全ての人を幸せにすることはできないし、サッチャー元首相は疲弊していた国の経済を立て直し、多くの人々の人生を豊かにした立役者なのだ。今日の繁栄を享受しているかのように見える彼らだけれど、サッチャー以前の停滞状態に戻りたいのか？？

話は変わるが、今日この葬儀の場で、新しい「スター」が誕生した。それは、サッチャー元首相の19歳の孫娘・Amanda Thatcher。凛とした美少女で、祖母の葬儀で見事な弔辞を読み上げ、注目を浴びた（Telegraph / Guardian / Evening Standard / Mirror / Daily Mail）。現在アメリカの大学に通っている彼女の一挙手一投足に、今後注目が集まりそう。

Today is a grieving day for many British (and a joyful day for few unforgiving people to what “Iron Lady” did) – the funeral of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who passed away on April 8th, was taken place at St. Paul’s Cathedral, attended by more than 2,300 guests including the Queen, who joined the politician’s funeral service for the first time since Winston Churchill’s funeral in 1965, as well as generation of British politicians and foreign dignitaries from 170 countries (guest list: ABC news). Baroness Thatcher (British call her like this with title) was a controversial political figure and created many enemies as well as admirers. But we should admit that she was a pioneer of female politician who was the longest-serving British Prime Minister of the 20th century with 11 years in the office, during the time when still sexism was strong. Her strong leadership and determination made UK revived from the “sick man of Europe” to one of the most powerful countries in the world again. To my eyes, some protestors to Thatcher went too far, and it is a bit sickening to see; partying & celebrating her death, hanging “Thatcher” doll, or putting up placards with derogatory remarks (ex. Guardian / Examiner). No respect to the deceased former prime minister first of all, and voters who democratically elected her for three times in 11 years, and mourners in much bigger numbers than the protesters. I feel sorry for the people who were affected by her tough policies (though still British social welfare system is much better than many other countries), and at least I understand the older generation or people in mining towns are still upset, but many protesters were ‘hip’ young students who were not even born yet while she was in power – how can they be so angry?! No leader can make everyone happy, but Thatcher at least made many better off, though not everyone, and they should respect that. Or those young people who apparently enjoy today’s UK’s prosperity want to go back the time when the nation was in bad condition before Thatcher??

By the way, today a new ‘star’ emerged from the funeral – Amanda Thatcher, 19-year old beautiful granddaughter of Baroness Thatcher, who made a awesome reading in the service. Lots of people are talking about her now! →Telegraph / Guardian / Evening Standard / Mirror / Daily Mail

Goswell Road（ゴスウェル・ロード）を歩いている時、Great Sutton Streetに面した建物の壁に浮き出たこの「白い顔」を発見した。

これは何？？と思って近づいてみると、下の方にポスターが貼ってある（写真下）。家に帰って、ポスターに書かれていたウェブサイトを見て、その謎が解けた。この顔のモデルは、地元クラーケンウェルの著名建築家＆ジャーナリストであるPeter Murray。サンフランシスコ出身でロンドンをベースとするアーティスト・Greg Shapterが、Domus Tilesという会社の依頼で制作した。→作品詳細とPeter Murrayのプロフィール

We spotted the white silhouette of a face on the side of the building on Great Sutton Street, while we are walking down Goswell Road. Who is this man??

We found a poster beneath the face when we came closer (photo below), and checked out the indicated website on the poster when we came back home to “get the answer.” This mysterious man is prominent local architect & journalist, Peter Murray, created by San Francisco born London based artist, Greg Shapter and comissioned by Domus Tiles. →details of project and who Peter Murray is

I am also curious 5 human figures on both sides of the face, two on the right and three on the left. Are those also made by the same artist??
