Street Art in East London: Mushrooms by Christiaan Nagel

ここ２〜３年、イーストロンドンの建物の上に出現したカラフルなきのこを時々見かけた。ずっと、あれは何だろう？と疑問だったのだが、ようやく今日その正体が分かった。

これは、ロンドン在住のストリートアーティスト・Christiaan Nagelの作品（写真）。ポリウレタン製で非常に軽く、万が一落ちてきたとしても、誰も怪我しないそう。昨年10月1日付のMade in Shoreditchのインタビュー記事によると、彼はこの時点で大小250以上のキノコを作ったという。大きな作品はさすがに許可を取るが、通常ゲリラスタイルで建物の上に登り、こっそり設置するのだそうだ。

Googleマップで彼のいくつかの作品の場所は分かるけれど、最後に更新されたのが2011年4月26日なので、Vyner streetにあるOmbraレストランの上のもの（写真上）など、それ以降の作品は網羅されていない。

I’ve spotted those funky colourful mushrooms on the top of some buildings in East London these few years. And I finally found out that those are the work of London based street artist, Christiaan Nagel (photos of his mushrooms).

The mushrooms are made of polyurethane and extremely light, so that it hurts no one even if it falls. He has made over 250 in different scales, according to his interview on Made in Shoreditch, published on Oct 1st, 2012. He normally installs the mushrooms in Guerrilla style, though he gets permission for the bigger works.

You can check the locations of these mushrooms on google map, but the map was last updated on April 26, 2011, and doesn’t cover all, including the one above Ombra on Vyner street (photo above).

Town Hall Hotel @ Patriot Square, Bethnal Green

This Bright Fieldから南へ数分歩くと、エドワード様式の立派な建物が見えてくる。これは2010年にオープンしたTown Hall Hotelで、シンガポール人ホテル実業家のLoh Lik Pengが、以前は区役所として使われていた、1909年建造のこの建物を改装。大理石の床や柱、立派な階段を備えた吹き抜けのロビーの片隅には、ミッド・センチュリー風の椅子が並ぶなど、アールデコ装飾とモダンなインテリアを融合した、優雅なデザインホテルに生まれ変わった。また、ホテル内のパブリック・スペースには、繊細な木版画や鉛筆描きの壁画、ペルシャ絨毯から作られたmoose（アメリカヘラジカ）の頭など、イースト・ロンドンのアーティストの作品が飾られている。

ロンドンに住んでいる人には宿泊する機会がないかもしれないけれど、ホテルには、ポルトガル人シェフ・Nuno Mendesがプロデュースした、ミシュラン一つ星のViajanteともう少しカジュアルなCorner roomという、二つの人気レストランが入っており、多くのグルメたちが訪れる。

部屋については泊まった事がないので、ご興味ある方は、批評家のレビュー（Telegraph/Guardian）と、デザインホテルサイト・Mr & Mrs Smithをチェックしてみて。でも、ホテルのあるエリアは、お世辞にも柄の良いエリアではなく、世界のおもちゃのコレクションを有するV&A Museum of Childhoodと、以前にブログでも取り上げた、いくつかのカフェやレストランしかないので、ロンドン初心者にはあまりお勧めできないかも。

Walking down several minutes to the south from This Bright Field, you will see Town Hall Hotel, opened sometime in 2010 and housed in a grand Edwardian building in Bethnal Green. Singapore hotelier Loh Lik Peng has transformed this former council hall with Art Deco detailing (history of the building) into this elegant boutique hotel, keeping the old charms but adding modern fixtures. The atrium is classic and impressive, with designed marble floors and marble pillars as well as imposing staircases, and also has some contemporary feel with mid-century style chairs for guests to relax. Inside of the hotel’s public spaces, you can see artworks by East London artists, such as delicate woodcuts, murals in pencil, and a mounted moose head made from Persian carpet.

For people who live in London, including us, may not have a chance to sleep in. However, this hotel houses two popular restaurants which are produced by renowned Portuguese chef Nuno Mendes, michelin-stared Viajante and Corner room, that attract many foodie Londoners.

I can’t write about the rooms as I’ve never slept there, so check the critique’s reviews (Telegraph/Guardian) or Boutique hotel site Mr & Mrs Smith if you want to stay. However, the location is not central or sophisticated at all,there is nothing but V&A Museum of Childhood and some hip neighborhood cafés & restaurants, and I am not sure if I want to recommend this hotel to a foreign guest who comes to London for the first time…

Kopparberg guerilla gardening by the Pothole Gardener @ Shoreditch

ショーディッチのEbor streetとRedchurch streetの路上で見かけた、小さなお花畑。歩道のコンクリートの隙間に土を入れて作られたこれらのミニ庭園は、東ロンドンの道の上に庭園を作る活動を行う「guerrilla gardener（ゲリラ庭師）」・Pothole Gardenerの作品。ショーディッチで、トークやワークショップ、エキシビション、上映会など、アンチ主流の創作活動を行っているテンポラリースペース・Kopparberg ün-establishment（〜10月26日）のプロジェクトの一環として作られた（参考サイト）。

これらのミニ花畑には、小型の花々、リスや小人のフィギュア、「mmm… Kopperberg」や「GNOME MAN’S LAND（小人の国）」と書かれた小さな黒板、そしてカラフルなKopparbergサイダー（イギリスでサイダーはリンゴ酒のことを指す）のカラフルなミニミニボトルが置かれている。大都市の中のこの小さなオアシス、ショーディッチにたむろする酔っ払いに踏まれて壊されませんように。

I found these cute little flower gardens appeared in the middle of the Ebor street and Redchurch street in Shoreditch. These are creations by the Pothole Gardener, a guerrilla gardener who create gardens on the streets of east London, for the project of the Kopparberg ün-establishment, a pop-up space in the centre of Shoreditch (opening until Oct 26), to explore anti-mainstream creativity through a series of talks, workshops, exhibitions and screenings (reference: designWEEK).

These little flower gardens consist of small flowers, little figures of squirrel and gnomes, and a blackboard with a hand written phrase of “mmm… Kopperberg” or “GNOME MAN’S LAND”, with a tiny bottle of colourful Kopparberg cider. A little oasis in a big city. I hope no one steps on a top of it and destroy it!

Cat Graffiti @ Garner Street, off Hackney Road

Hackney Road（ハックニーロード）近く、Garner StreetとCoate Streetの角の黒いビルに描かれた、キュートな猫のグラフィティ。調べてみたけど、アーティスト名は分からずじまい。ご存知の方、情報お願いします。

A cute cat graffiti on the black building at the corner of Garner Street & Coate Street, off Hackney Road. I tried to find out who did, but no information available. If any of you knows it, please let me know.

Hurwundeki Café @ Cambridge Heath Road

Hurwundeki（発音不明。ハーウンデキ？？）は、鉄道のCambridge Heath（ケンブリッジ・ヒース）駅の高架下、イーストロンドンで最近お洒落になってきたエリアにある、カフェ＆レストラン兼アンティークショップ。オーナーがヘアスタイリストなので、中にヘアサロンもある。前庭には乗馬型玩具やカボチャの馬車など古いおもちゃが無造作に置いてあり、外から見ると寂れた子供の遊び場という感じ。「Hurwundeki」という聞き慣れない名前も、最初はアフリカかどっかの言葉かな？と思っていたけれど、実はオーナーの出身地・韓国の済州島の方言で「髪」を意味するそう。中も外も、韓国を思わせるものは一切ないけれど、ビビンバやプルコギなど韓国料理が、クロワッサンなどの朝食、サンドイッチ、サラダ、ケーキ類、コーヒー通の好むSquare Mileのコーヒーなど、フツーの西洋風食べ物・飲み物と共にメニューに並ぶ。かなり使い古されたヴィンテージの家具やシャンデリアなどで飾られた中は広々、まったりした空気が流れていて居心地はなかなか。電車が頭上を通る時は振動・騒音もあるが、それほど気にならない。

ランチは少し半信半疑で、ロンドン東部ではあまりお目にかかれないビビンバとプルコギを注文。ちゃんとした韓国レストランじゃないし、あまり期待はしていなかったけど、思った以上に美味しい。我が儘言うなら、イートインには、蓋が顔に当たって食べにくいペラペラの紙製容器ではなく、普通のお皿で出して欲しい。ホットドリンクは陶器のカップで出て来るのに、どうして食べ物は安っぽい紙製なのか？？

Hurwundeki is housed in the railway arches under Cambridge Heath station in the heart of East London. From outside, it looks more like run-down children’s playground with an old toys such as ride-on horse and a pumpkin carriage on the front garden, but this is a popular café, restaurant, vintage shop + hair salon (the owner is a hair stylist). At first, I thought its unfamiliar name of ‘Hurwundeki’ is African language or something, but it is not – in fact, the word is Korean and means ‘hair’ in a dialect of Jeju Island where the owner is from. The space has nothing Korean in sight, but does have Korean dishes such as Bibimbap and Bulgogi, together with usual western breakfast, sandwiches, salad and cakes, as well as famous Square Mile coffee. The eat-in space is a bit shabby but spacious and laid back, surrounded by worn-out vintage furniture and chandeliers as well as quirky bric-a-brac. You may feel a bit of vibration and noise when a train passes by, but it’s not too annoying.

We tried their bibimbap and bulgogi for lunch, which is rare in East London, and the food was surprisingly decent as a café, not a proper Korean restaurant with table service. It would be even better if they can serve the food on a plate, not in a thin paper container with plastic lid (photo below) – it was quite hard to eat as the lid slapped my face with every bite. Eat-in drinks are served in a ceramic cup, but why not food??
