Rachel Getting Married @ Screen on the Green

先週公開された映画、「レイチェルの結婚（Rachel Getting Married）」を観た。主演のアン・ハサウェイは、この映画での好演技で、今年のゴールデングローブ主演女優賞、アカデミー賞主演女優賞の候補になった。様々な人種が結婚式のために集って和やかに歌い踊る、ほとんど非現実的とも思える理想的な状況の対照的に、お互いを思いやりながらも、時に衝突し、傷つけ合う家族。ドキュメンタリー風に撮影されたこの映画は、依存症から立ち直るヒロインとその家族との関係、疎外感と罪悪感、複雑な家庭環境、そしてそれぞれの家族の抱える心の痛みをうまく描き出している。だが、デジタルカメラで撮られたというこの映画は手ぶれがひどく、上映中始終流れる音楽で、終わった後は乗り物酔いのような軽い吐き気と頭痛に悩まされた。また、インド衣装のサリーでの結婚式、ワールドミュージック盛りだくさんのパーティと、アメリカ東海岸リベラル知識層スタイルは、ちょっとイタかった。でも、日本人もキリスト教式の結婚式をしたりするから、文句は言えないか。

映画館は、AngelのUpper streetにある、Screen on the Green。アートハウス系、インデペンデント映画、外国映画を上映する、ミニシアター系の映画館で、古き良き時代の外観とくたびれたベルベットのシートがいい感じ。３００席と結構広いので、ゆったりと映画を楽しめます。

We saw a movie ‘Rachel Getting Married‘. Anne Hathaway won numerous awards and is nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in this movie. This ‘documentary’ style movie deals with the difficult relationship with ex-addict heroine Kim and her family. In contrast to the happy wedding mood with ‘we are the world’ like gathering with family and friends from all kinds of racial background, the film portrays well about Kim’s feeling of alienation and sense of guilt toward her family, and each family’s emotional scars in the complicated family background. But this film, supposedly shot with digital camera, and its music all through the screening, caused me a nausea and headache… Also the Connecticut-intellectual-liberal style wedding, with world music, and Indian dresses – maybe they are Hindu?  – is not my cup of tea. But I cannot complain it, because Japanese and Chinese, who are not Christian, love the Western style Christian wedding.

The cinema we went is Screen on the Green, on Upper street in Angel. A good old-fashioned cinema, with sagging velvet seats and large space with 300 seats, shows art-house, independent and foreign movies. Very relaxing, and it is one of our regular cinemas.
