Brit Insurance Designs of the Year 2009 @ Design Museum

デザイン・ミュージアム（Design Museum）で行われた、第二回Brit Insurance Designs of the Year 2009展のプレビューに行ってきた。建築、ファッション、家具、グラフィックス、インタラクティブ、プロダクト、交通・乗り物の７つのカテゴリーで、この年最も優れたデザインが選ばれる。この展覧会は、イギリス、ヨーロッパ、アメリカ、オーストラリア、日本等、世界各国からの候補作を集めたもの。車や家具等の大きなものから、小物、建築の小型モデル、ビデオ等、いろいろなサイズ、形態がごっちゃになっていて、ちょっと統一感に欠ける感じ。逆に、７部門９１の候補作の解説を掲載したパンフレットは、とても立派でよくできている。

テムズ川沿いにある、こじんまりしたデザイン・ミュージアムは、２５年前にテレンス・コンランによってデザインされた。建築・ファッション・グラフィック・家具・産業デザイン等、あらゆる形態のコンテンポラリー・デザインの展示で知られる。過去には、ソウル・バスやジャン・プルーヴェ、エットレ・ソットサス、ザハ・ハディッドなど、デザインの大御所のエキシビションも。１階にあるショップも小さいながらも、センスの良い商品が並んでおり、お土産にもぴったり。ウェブサイトもスタイリッシュだ。ただ、スペースに限りあるので、特に大御所のデザイナー等、ちょっと展示が物足りないなと思う事も多い。場所を移転して、ミュージアムを拡大するという噂もあるので、期待したい。

We went to a preview of Brit Insurance Designs of the Year 2009 exhibition at the Design Museum. This exhibition presents the nominated works from the world such as UK, Europe, USA, Australia, Japan etc, in 7 categories (Architecture, Fashion, Furniture, Graphics, Interactive, Product and Transport). The exhibition gave me a feeling of mix and match and lack of focus ー from big products such as a car or furniture, to small ones like jar tops or magazines. On the contrary, the information brochure, which explains 91 nominees in 7 categories with color photos,  is well made.

The Design Museum, which is located alongside River Thames, is designed by Sir Conran. This small museum devotes to contemporary design in every form from furniture to graphics, and architecture to industrial design. Past exhibitions include bog designers such as Saul Bass, Jean Prouvé, Ettore Sottsass, and Zaha Hadid etc. A museum shop on the ground floor is cosy but has a range of design objects. Website is well designed as well, and you can also buy their products at the webshop. Since the space is limited, we often feel like the exhibition is a bit shallow. There is a rumor that the museum is lookig for a new place to move, so we hope it will happen.
