Monocle Magazine March 09

Mが、Monocle（モノクル）３月号を買った。モノクルは、カナダ人編集長Tyler Brûlé（タイラー・ブリュレ）が、2007年2月にロンドンで創刊した雑誌（年１０冊発行）で、この号が２周年記念号とある。洗練された国際派ビジネスマンや起業家、知識人を主なターゲットとし、国際情勢・カルチャー、デザイン、ファッション等幅広いトピックを扱う。タイラー・ブリュレは、もともとBBCのジャーナリストだったが、1996年に「90年代で最も影響力のあるライフスタイル・マガジン」と呼ばれたイギリスの雑誌・Wallpaper*を創刊。一躍時の人となった。また、英ファイナンシャル・タイムズやニューヨーク・タイムズ等、メジャーなメディアのコラムニストとしても活躍する。

モノクルは、タイラー・ブリュレが編集長だけあって、スタイリッシュにデザインされている。紙も手触りがよいし、グラフィック、写真も充実している。主なメディアがあまり記事にしない国の話題も多く取り上げるが、イギリスやロンドンに対しては時に批判的で、あまり話題に上らないのがちょっと悲しい。それに、世界中のトピックを取り上げるのはいいが、ちょっとマイナーすぎて退屈だったり、表面的になってしまうのが難しいところ。取り上げるファッションや商品はちょっと保守的、質はいいが高くて庶民にはちょっと高嶺の花のものが多い。ウェブサイトも充実していて、ビデオやオーディオ、スライドショー等、インタラクティブなものとなっている。行ったことはないが、最近、The Monocle Shopも、洗練された店が並ぶMarylebone High street近くにオープンした。すごく小さなストアらしいが、編集者が世界から選りすぐった、文房具やかばん、ニット製品、CD等を扱っている。日本のBeamsとタイアップして、吉田かばんのPorterブランドのカバンもここで買える。

M bought Monocle March 2009 issue. Monocle is a London-based magazine, founded in February 2007, by Canadian born Tyler Brûlé. Monocle comes out 10 issues a year, and this one is a second anniversary issue. The magazine, targeting ’sophisticated’ jet setters and cosmopolitan urban settlers, talks about global affairs, business, culture and design. Tyler Brûlé, originally a BBC journalist, is a founder of  ‘most influential life style magazine in 90’s’ Wallpaper*, and a columnist for major medias such as Financial Times and International Herald Tribune etc.

Monocle is stylishly designed, with nice paper and plenty of graphics and photos. The magazine deals with all kind of issues from the countries that other media rarely talks, but Brûlé is often critical about UK and London and hardly mentions (which I think it is not fair for London). The intention to cover all over the world is good, but articles are sometimes too minor, boring, and superficial. The fashion and products in the magazine is often conservative, good quality and expensive, and not for everyone – you can tell who is the target reader. The website, focusing on broadcasting with films, slide shows and audio reports, is also cool as well. Recently Monocle open its first store near Marylebone High street. The store stocks a selection of curated, crafted products, such as stationery, bags, knitwear, and CDs etc, that their editors have found in the world.
