National Trust: Claremont Landscape Garden, Hatchlands Park

今日、サリー（Surrey）州に日帰りドライブに行ってきた。ギルドフォード（Guildford）を最終目的地として、その途中にあるナショナル・トラスト（National Trust）のClaremont Landscape GardenとHatchlands Parkに立ち寄った。ナショナル・トラストは、イングランド、ウェールズ、北アイルランドの歴史的建築物の保護を目的として1895年に設立されたチャリティー団体（スコットランドは独自の団体を持つ）。現在、25万ヘクタールもの自然区に1141kmの海岸線、そして350以上の建築物や庭園を管理している。2007年統計で会員数は350万人、ボランティアの数は4万7千人にも上る。前回のコッツウォルズ（Cotswolds）旅行の際に、ナショナル・トラストのメンバーになった。個人メンバーは£47.50、私たちはカップルとして加入したので、二人で£79.50。１年有効で、一般公開されているナショナル・トラスト施設に無料で入れる。

We drove to Surrey near London today for a day trip. Guildford was our final destination, and we stopped by 2 National Trust properties, Claremont Landscape Garden and Hatchlands Park, on our way. National Trust (The National Trust for Places of Historic Interest or Natural Beauty) is a charitable conservation organization in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, and was formed in 1895 (National Trust for Scotland is an independent organization). The trust cares for 250,000 hectares of countryside as well as 1141 km coastline, and more than 350 heritage properties, including historic houses and gardens, industrial monuments and social history sites. By 2007, its membership had reached 3.5 million and 47,000 volunteers. We got our memberships at the Cotswolds Trip in March. Annual membership for individual costs £47.50 but we paid for joint memberships for £79.50. With the memberships, we can go any National Trust properties open to the public for free of charge.

Claremont Landscape Gardenは、鴨や水鳥たちが人なつこく寄ってくる池や、珍しい草地でできた円形劇場（amphitheatre）を特徴とする庭園（上の写真２枚）。敷地内のあちこちに置かれている、白く塗られた木の椅子や、熊やイノシシ、クジャクの像が、なかなか可愛い。週の半ばで訪れる人もあまりなく、夏休みを利用した子供連れや老夫婦がちらほらいるぐらいで、あいにく天気はあまりすっきりしなかったが、気持ちよく散歩できた。

Claremont is a beautiful garden surrounding a small lake where friendly ducks and birds hang around and unusual grass amphitheater. White painted wooden chairs here and there in the park, and statues of bear, boar, and orchard add an extra character. As it was in mid-week, we didn’t see many people but some old couples and families with children for summer break, and we had a pleasant walk in spite of the cloudy sky.

Hatchlands Parkは、18世紀に建てられた屋敷にバッハやショパン等の有名作曲家ゆかりの鍵盤楽器の世界最大のコレクションを保有。屋敷の裏に広がる174ヘクタールに上る公園は、閉園間際に行ったせいか、人気はほとんどなかった。手入れされた庭と言うより野原と言う感じの園内は、牛の群れがそこここに放たれており、かなりワイルド。その牛たちの落とし物のため、歩く時には十分注意が必要だ。

Hatchlands Park is known for the 18th-century mansion with world’s largest group of keyboard instruments associated with famous composers such as Bach and Chopin. The 174-hectare park behind the mansion, which is rather wild plain than well cared garden, was desolated when we went just before closing time, and we saw only one person with 2 cute dogs and a group of cows sitting and staring at invaders. We had to be careful for their dropping when we walked in the park.
