クリスマスの翌日26日は、Boxing Day（ボクシング・デー）。イギリスでは、前日のクリスマスとともにバンク・ホリデー（国民の休日）とされている。今年はボクシング・デーは土曜日なので、振替休日として月曜日も休みとなる。クリスマス、ボクシング・デーが土・日にあたる場合は、翌月曜・火曜日が休日になる。

26日は元々「聖スティーヴンの日（St. Stephen’s Day）」で、イエス・キリストが神の子であると述べ伝えた廉でユダヤ人によって石打の刑に処された殉教者ステファノを偲ぶ日だった。イギリスでいつ頃名前が変わったか不明だが、ボクシング・デーの由来は、教会が設置した貧しい人たちのための寄付箱（box）を開ける日であったとか、昔クリスマスにも働かなければならなかった使用人に、主人が箱（box）にプレゼントとボーナスを入れ、クリスマス翌日に渡していたからだ、等の説がある。今でも、牛乳や郵便、新聞配達人等に、チップやプレゼントを配ったり、この時期に合わせてボーナスを支給したりする会社もあるそうだ。

この日は、家族が団らんしたり、上流階級では猟犬を伴って狐刈りに出かける（fox hunting）のがイギリスの伝統だが、近年では、ショッピングとスポーツの日でもある。サッカーやラグビー等の試合が組まれ、この日は遠方のチームでなく、地元同士が対戦するなわらしだ。また、1年最大のバーゲンセール開始の日でもあり、人気の店では、朝早くから行列ができる。上のビデオは、開店直後のセルフリッジズ・デパート。みんな叫ぶわ走るわ、鬼気迫るものがある。朝5時には、4000人もの人が、9時の開店を待っていたそうだ。今年も一番乗りの女性は、朝2時から並んでいたと言う、気合いの入れよう。何年か前のボクシング・デーに、セルフリッジズに行ったが、午後だったにも関わらずたくさんの人で賑わっており、人疲れして何も買えず帰って来た。

今年は、不況のせいもあり、一部の店はクリスマス前にセールを前倒しにしたり、多くの店がインターネット上で一足先にセールを行っているにも関わらず、今年のボクシング・デーは土曜日、また景気対策のために暫定的に15％に下げられていた付加価値税（VAT: Value-Added Tax）が1月1日から17.5％に戻ることもあり、空前の人混みだったそうだ。アメリカン・エクスプレスの資産によると、セール総額は30億ポンド以上にものぼると予測されている。

Boxing Day is a bank and public holiday in UK, and is traditionally celebrated on 26 December, St. Stephen’s Day, commemorates St Stephen who is the first Christian martyr or protomartyr, the day after Christmas Day. Boxing Day is on Saturday this year, so following Monday will be a public holiday. If Christmasy day is a Saturday or Sunday, then both the Monday and Tuesday may be public holidays.

The origin of its name ‘Boxing’ Day is not determined, but one theory is that December 26 was traditionally the day to open the Christmas ‘Box’ to share the contents with the poor. Another theory is that it was a day the servants had a day off from their duties and received a ‘box’ of gifts and bonus from their masters. In modern times, many families still follow this tradition, giving a present or tip to a milkman, a postman, and a news boy. Also some companies give a bonus to their employees around this time.

Traditionally Boxing Day is a time for family and for traditional fox hunting, but also is known as a day of shopping and sports. Premier League as well as the lower divisions and Rugby Football leagues hold matches on Boxing Day. Traditionally matches on Boxing Day are played against local rivals. Also it is the first day of the biggest sale season and the busiest shopping day of the year. Many shoppers wait for the store opening in a queue from early morning  to bag a bargain. Around 4,000 started queuing from 5am outside Selfridges department store. A woman at the first of the waiting line arrived the store at 2 am in the morning in freezing cold! The video above is the scene at the Selfridges department store when the door opened – people shout and run as soon as they came inside, and it is pretty horrifying. I cannot understand how much effort people can make, just for shopping. We went to Selfridges on Boxing Day few years ago. It was so crowded, even it was late afternoon, that we came back home empty handed, completely exhausted.

This year some stores started their sales before Christmas and many had already launched their sales online. But the biggest ever Boxing Day shopping spree is recorded today, because this year’s Boxing Day is on Saturday, and the current temporary 15% VAT rate will return to 17.5% on January 1st. Research by American Express suggests that more than £3 billion will be spent in the sales.

Christmas Day in UK

今日はクリスマス。イングランド北部やスコットランドなどでは雪が降り、ホワイトクリスマスになった。イギリスでは、少数のお店やレストランをのぞき、クリスマス当日はどこもかしこも閉まってしまうので、まるでゴーストタウンのようになる。主だった観光地はすべてお休みなので、クリスマス休暇でロンドンにやって来た観光客は、いったいどうしているのだろうと心配になる。

イギリスでのクリスマスの1日は、朝起きてプレゼントを開けることから始まる。イングランド国教会の2007年度統計によると、クリスマスイブ／クリスマス当日に教会に行くのは、人口約6千万人のうち266万人だけらしい。

その後、メイン・イベントである、Christmas dinner（クリスマス・ディナー。クリスマスの日の昼食）の準備が始まる。日本ではディナー＝夕食であるが、英語で「dinner」は、「1日の中心的な食事」で、昼食または夕食を指す。ちなみに、こちらでは学校給食は「School dinner（スクール・ディナー）」と呼ばれる。伝統的なクリスマス・ディナーのメニューは、詰め物をしたローストターキー（七面鳥の丸焼き）に、付け合わせのポテト、人参、芽キャベツ等（蒸すかゆでる）。そして、デザートにはブランデー・バターとともにクリスマス・プディング（Christmas pudding、イギリスではプディングはデザートの同義語）が出される。七面鳥はぱさぱさしているし、蒸し野菜・茹で野菜は嫌いだし、プディングは甘くて重たいので、私はこちらのクリスマス・ディナーはちょっと苦手だ。食事が始まるのが遅めなので、その間はミンスパイやマグカップに入ったMulled Wine（マルド・ワイン、スパイスを加えたホット・ワイン）を口にしながら待つ。テーブルには、クリスマス・クラッカー（Christmas Cracker）。日本のクラッカーとは形が違い、ラッピングペーパーのような光沢のある紙で包まれている。片方を一人が、反対側をもう一人が握り、互いが引っ張ると、「パン！」と割れて、中からおもちゃやジョークの書かれた紙、紙製の王冠が出てくる。クリスマス・パーティや誕生パーティで、大の大人が嬉しそうに、この紙の王冠を冠っているのを良く見かける。

お腹いっぱい食べた後は、リビングで団らん。おしゃべりやゲームをしたり、テレビを見たりして過ごす。午後3時には、1932年から続く、恒例のエリザベス女王のクリスマス・スピーチがテレビで放送され、約27％のイギリス人が見るという。女王が今年起こった出来事を振り返るこのスピーチでは、アフガニスタンで亡くなった戦士の追悼と感謝、経済不況、英コモンウェルスの意義、そして未来への希望を語られ、イギリス国内はもちろん、コモンウェルス各国でも放映された。

On the Christmas Day today, snow has fallen in parts of the UK, and it has become a white Christmas in Scotland and northern England (London was sunny). Nearly 100% of businesses close today, except very few non-Christian stores and restaurants, and the the city looks like a ghost town. I always wonder what all the tourists do on the Christmas day – it’s very cold, major tourist sights are closed, and very few restaurants are open (and could be very expensive with the special Christmas menu in hotel restaurants).

The Christmas Day in UK starts with opening Christmas presents. After the excitement (and disappointment)  of this ritual, preparation of Christmas Dinner, the main event of the day, starts. According to statistics by the Church of England, only 2.66 million people, among population of 60 millions, went to church services on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day in 2007.

Typical menu of the day is roast turkey with stuffing or other meats, and some boiled or steamed vegetables such as potatoes, brussels sprouts, and carrots. After the meal, a dessert of Christmas pudding (or plum pudding) is served with brandy butter. The turkey is tend to be dry, I hate steamed or boiled vegetables, and the pudding (refers to any desert in UK) is very sweet and heavy, so I am not really crazy about British Christmas dinner. Since the Christmas dinner starts in the afternoon, mince pies and a mug of mulled wine are often served while waiting. During the meal, Christmas crackers, containing toys, jokes and a paper hat, are often pulled – one person holds one side and another person grips the other side, and pull together. I often see a grown-up adult wearing this paper crown, but looking a bit stupid (cute for kids, though), in a Christmas or a birthday party.

After the big meal, people move to a living room, and spend the afternoon chatting, relaxing, watching TV, or playing games. At 3pm, some people watch annual Royal Christmas Message, started in 1932, by the Queen made to the Commonwealth. In this year’s speech, the Queen expressed sadness at the death toll among British troops in Afghanistan, referred to the Commonwealth as “strong and practical force for good”, and ended her speech with her hope for a better future.

Christmas Eve in UK

今日はクリスマス・イブ。お店やレストランは、今日は閉店か早仕舞い、人々は、クリスマスパーティや家族との団らん、家族が勢揃いする翌日のクリスマスランチの準備のため、家路を急ぐ。

イギリスでは、サンタ・クロースは、Father Christmas（ファザー・クリスマス）と呼ばれる。子供たちはファザー・クリスマスのためにミンスパイとシェリー酒かブランデーを、そしてトナカイのRudolph（ルドルフ）にはにんじんを用意する。そして、Christmas stockings（長靴下）をベッドか暖炉上部の飾り棚に吊るして、ファザー・クリスマスからのプレゼントを待つ。イヴの夜は、教会でキャロルが行われる。夕方に行われるCandle Lit Service（キャンドルライト・サービス／燭火礼拝）では、信徒たちがろうそくを片手にクリスマス・キャロルを歌い、子供たちがキリスト降誕物語（Nativity）を演じる。そして深夜頃に行われるMidnight Mass（深夜ミサ）では、クリスマスの始まりを祝う。イギリスのイヴはこんな感じです。

Today is the Christmas Eve. Shops and restaurants are either closed today or close earlier than usual. People hurry back home for a family reunion or a Christmas party with friends and families.

In UK, Santa Claus is often called Father Christmas. Children prepare a glass of sherry or brandy and a mince pie for Father Christmas and some carrots  for Rudolph, a red-nose reindeer. They hang Christmas stockings to receive presents from Father Christmas, at the end of their beds or along the mantelpiece above the fireplace. On Christmas Eve night, there are usually two church carol services: Candle Lit Service is held on early evening, and the congregation hold a candle whilst they sing Christmas Carols and watch a Nativity performed by children. On the Midnight Mass, Christians welcome the beginning of Christmas Day. Christmas Eve in UK is like this.

Prince William Slept Rough on the Street Last Week

ウィリアム王子が先週、ロンドンのBlackfriars bridge（ブラックフリアーズ橋）の近くで、ホームレス体験とホームレス問題に対する認知を高めるため、路上で一晩を過ごした。子供の頃、母である故ダイアナ妃にお忍びでホームレス慈善団体のCentrepoint（センターポイント）に連れられたことがきっかけで、成長してからCentrepointの後援者となった。王子は、チャリティの責任者（写真上）とともに零下の中、ゴミ用トローリーに囲まれ、寝袋の中で夜12時から朝6時まで過ごした。その後は、ウエスト・エンドのホームレスの若者が多く夜を過ごす場所の視察をされた。寝ている間、王子たちに気づかなかった道路清掃車にひかれそうになって、ひやっとしたそうだ。日本では王子が1泊でも路上生活するなんて考えられない。過剰保護されている日本の皇室とは比べ物にならないぐらい、イギリスの王室はオープンで自由なのだ。

ホームレスチャリティのHomeless Linkの統計によると、昨年ロンドンでは、路上で睡眠を取った人が一晩あたり239人（イングランド統計483人のうち49％）。この数は、ホームレスチャリティやボランティアのおかげで、10年前の約半数になった。内訳は87％が男性で、13％が女性。62％が26〜45歳、30％が46歳以上、そして7％が25歳以下。41％に薬物問題、49％にアルコール問題、35％に精神疾患が見られた（重複あり）。15％のみ、この3つの問題のどれもなかった。政府のホームレス対策に呼応して作られた委員会であるThe London Delivery Boardは、2012年（ロンドン・オリンピック開催年）までに、ホームレスをなくすと掲げている。

慈善活動は、イギリス王室の重要な活動の１つだ。ウィリアム王子も、慈善活動に熱心な両親の影響で、少年時代から色々な活動に興味を示してきた。母親のエイズ救援・防止活動、そして父親の自然保護や恵まれない人々への活動は、王子に同じ分野での活動を促した。彼はまた、アフリカ支援にも興味を持っており、弟であるヘンリー王子（イギリスではハリーと呼ばれる）の慈善団体・Sentebaleにも時折参加している。こう書いていると至極品行方正に聞こえる王子たちであるが、ご心配なく。プライベート・ライフは楽しく過ごしているようだ。以前は、王子兄弟が（とその従姉妹のベアトリーチェ王女とユージーン王女）、Mahiki（マヒキ）やBoujis（ブージズ）、 Whisky Mist（ウィスキーミスト）等、ポッシュ(Posh、気取った)なナイトクラブに出入りしている姿が、よくロンドンのフリーペーパーを賑わわせていた（下の写真は酔っぱらった王子とガールフレンドのケイト・ミドルトン）。最近はあまりお遊びの写真は見かけないけれど、二人とも大人になったのか、それとも、行き過ぎたパパラッチ行為には法的措置も持さないと言う、エリザベス女王の警告が効いたのか？

Prince William spent one night sleeping rough on the streets near Blackfriars bridge in London last week, to experience being homeless and to raise awareness in homelessness. He was taken by his mother, late Princess Diana, on a secret visit to a Centrepoint shelter when he was a child, and the experience led him to become a patron of homeless charity Centrepoint when he grew up. He slept in a sleeping bag in sub-zero temperatures together with the charity’s chief executive (photo above), next to the wheelie bins, from 12 am to 6 am. Then he went on a tour of the West End to see where many young homeless people were sleeping. He and his company were almost run over by a road sweeper which didn’t see them. It is inconceivable in Japan that one of the princes sleeps on the street without roof, even for one night. British Royal family is incredibly open and free, in compare to the overprotected Japanese Royal family.

According to the key facts by Homeless Link, 239 people sleeping rough on any given night counted last year in London (49% of the England total 483); which is half the level that it was ten years ago, thanks to an effort by a number of homeless charities and its volunteers. 87% were male and 13% were female. 62% were aged between 26 and 45, 30% were aged over 46, and 7% were under age 25. Among the homeless people, 41% had drug problems, 49% had alcohol problems, and 35% had mental health problems (people may be counted in more than one category); 15% had neither drug, alcohol or mental health problems. The London Delivery Board, a group of voluntary agencies and statutory bodies, aims to eliminate rough sleeping in London by 2012, the year of London Olympic.

To involve in a charity activity is an important Royal duty in UK. Prince William took interest in various causes from an early age, with an influence from his parents who have been also active in charity. His mother’s work with HIV/AIDS aid and prevention, and his father’s work with the natural environment and the inner-city disadvantaged, directed him into those areas. He also showed a desire to focus on the needy in Africa, and sometimes works with his brother Prince Harry‘s charity, Sentebale. How nice and touching. But don’t worry, the princes also have a nice life and like to party as well. I used to see photographs of the Royal brothers (and their cousins, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie), coming out from some posh night clubs such as Mahiki, Boujis and the Whisky Mist, all over the London’s free papers a while ago (photo below is Prince William obviously drunk with his girlfriend Kate Middleton in 2007) – but I rarely see recently. Maybe because they grew up and become mature, or the warning by the Queen, that “the Royal Family stands ready to take legal action against harassment and intrusion by paparazzi”??

NHS Prescription / Homeopathy Remedies for Cold and Flu

昨日、バスから追い出され、雪の中を半時間歩いたせいか、ひきかけの風邪が悪化した。鼻がぐずぐずしてひどい鼻声になり、しょっちゅう鼻をかんでいる。風邪薬を買いに行きがてら、薬局で先日もらった処方箋薬も受け取る（上は以前使用しなかった処方箋）。イギリスでは、処方箋薬は無料。だから特に指定がなければ、価格の安いジェネリック医薬品が処方される。薬代は無料でも、処方箋料（NHS prescription charges）を一回につき£7.20払わなければいけない。なので、成分や薬効が変わらなれば、値段の安い、処方箋の要らない市販薬を勧められることもある。

少し前に街角でもらったフリーペーパー、The Epoch Times（大紀元：法輪功関連の新聞だそうだ。知らなかった！読んだのは英語版）に載っていた、新型インフルエンザに効くというホメオパシー・レメディーをBoots（ブーツ）で買っておいたので、風邪にも効くかなと使ってみた。ホメオパシーが盛んなイギリスでは、ブーツ等の普通の薬局で手に入る。最初に少しの喉の痛みを感じてから、風邪やインフルエンザのひきはじめに効くというAconite（Aconitum napellus：アコナイト、トリカブト／£4.99）を使用。その後数日間は、レメディーのせいか安静にしていたからかどうか分からないけれど、症状は悪化しなかった。風邪がひどくなった今日から、新型の初期流行に最も効果的だったというArsen alb（Arsenicum Album：アーセニカム、砒素／£4.99）が、鼻水を伴う風邪にも効くというので試している。

ホメオパシーは、科学的にその効果が証明されておらず、プラセボ効果以上に効き目はないと言われているのだが、イギリスでは£4000億の市場規模を誇るビジネス。レメディーを売っているブーツ自身、効果はさておき、売れるから取り扱っていると認めている。Mは超科学信奉者なので、ホメオパシーや代替療法は一切信用しない。共に薬剤師である両親も然り。私はというと、プラセボ効果でも何でも、効けばラッキーぐらいに思っている。また他に効果的な治療法や薬がなければ、民間療法でも何でも、すがりたくなる気持ちも分かる。さて、今使っているレメディーの効果はいかに？でも、あんまり効果がない場合に備えて、一応市販の風邪薬も買ってある。

Probably because I was kicked out from the bus and forced to walk in snow for half an hour yesterday, my cold got worse. My nose is runny and my voice has changed, and I have been blowing my nose  all the time. So I went to a pharmacy to buy a cold medicine, and picked up my prescription drug as well (the prescription above is the unused one I got in the past). In UK, a prescription drug is free, but you pay NHS prescription charges for £7.20 (price from April 2009 to now). and usually a cheap generic medicine is given if you don’t choose others. A pharmacist often recommend to buy over-the-counter drug, if it is cheaper than prescription charge and if the ingredients and effectiveness are more or less the same with the prescription medicine.

I bought two homeopathy remedies from Boots, which supposedly effective for Swine flu, after I read the Epoch Times‘ (free paper founded by practitioners of the Falun Gong – I didn’t now it) article about it. First I had used Aconite (Aconitum napellus) , which can be helpful at the first sign of flu and cold symptoms. My condition had been the status quo for few days – I don’t know because of the effect of Aconite, or because I had been at home kept myself warm. Now my symptoms got worse and I started to take Arsen alb (Arsenicum Album), which is “the most commonly indicated remedy for the H1N1 virus outbreak of early 2009,” as I read that it works for a blocked nose as well.

Homeopathy is not supported by modern scientific research, and it is said that there is little evidence the remedies work other than as a placebo. But homeopathy is £40 million industry in the UK, and Boots admits that they sell homeopathic remedies because “they sell, not because they work“. M believes only science, not homeopathy or alternative medicines – so do my parents who are both pharmacists. I myself don’t mind to try anything as long as it works and safe. I also understand people who find a hope in alternative medicines if there is no other cure. Let’s see if my homeopathic remedy works for me. I bought usual cold medicine as well, in case it doesn’t work at all.

下のビデオは、これを書いている時に偶然見た、グラクソ・スミスクライン社のBeecham（ビーチャム）風邪薬のTVコマーシャル。ちなみに、去年のHSBC銀行の広告でも相撲力士が起用された。肌色を濃くして、目を切れ長に修正した白人がモデルのこの広告が、日本人に対する侮辱的だと在住日本人の間でひんしゅくを買っているとの記事があったが、私個人としては，そんなに目くじらたてる程のことでもないと思うんだけれど。多かれ少なかれ、外国人の描き方にステレオタイプが入るのは仕方ないことだし、Mも日本のバラエティ番組等で「ガイジン」が面白おかしく取り上げられているのが不愉快だと言っている。文句を言う人は、人の振り見て我が振り直せ、というところですね。

HSBC bank also used Sumo wrestler for their advertising last year. But HSBC was under fire as the campaign uses the image of a western man whose skin tone has been darkened and that make-up has been applied that appears to narrow his eyes, and it has upset Japanese living in UK, according to the Guardian article. Personally I don’t think it is a big deal – a portrayal of a foreigner is more or less based on a stereotype, not only Japanese. M complains that some Japanese TV programs make fun of ‘Gaijin’, foreigners in Japanese. At the end of the day, I think any country does the same, or otherwise it would be very boring if everything is goody-goody.
