Fin & Flounder, a Cute Local Fishmonger @ Broadway Market

「Fin & Flounder（ヒレとカレイ/ヒラメ）」は、ロンドン東部のブロードウェイ・マーケット（Broadway Market）にある小さなお魚屋さん。白いタイル壁と、アンティークっぽいペンダントライトが天井から垂れ下がるモダンな店内は、すっきりとしていて清潔。薄いブルーに塗られた外観にマッチした青いバケツ、そして青に映える黄色いホースはIKEAのロゴを思わせる。手描きで、シーフードを使った料理のレシピが書かれている黒板も可愛い。この黒板一面に書かれたレシピをメモしようという、気合いが入った人はあまりいないだろうけれど、お店のウェブサイトでも、ゴードン・ラムゼイやヘストン・ブルメンタールなど、セレブ・シェフのレシピが見れる。

コーンウォールやヘイスティングスなど国内の漁港から運ばれてくる、新鮮なシーフード以外にも、魚料理に合うハーブ類や調味料（醤油やわさびもある）、瓶詰めの食品やワインなども、この小さい店内の棚にこじんまりと並んでいる。店員も親切で、味気ない大手スーパーが幅を利かせるこの時代、店主とお客のふれあいがあった古き良き時代の商店を、時代に合わせて洗練させて再現した、素敵なお店です。

Fin & Flounder is a small back to basics fish store on chic Broadway Market in Hackney. This simple and modern shop, decorated with plain white tile walls and rusty pendant lights, is neat, clean, and well taken care of. Blue buckets, matching with light blue storefront, and yellow hoses reminds me of IKEA logo. Recipe on a blackboard on the back of seafood selection is a cute touch, though I don’t think many people will write down this lengthy recipe on a piece of paper. Alternatively, you can check recipes of celebrity chef such as Gordon Ramsay and Heston Blumenthal on their website.

Fin & Flounder also has a selection of  wines that are picked to complement seafood dishes, herbs, spices, and other deli items neatly on shelves on the back of the store, as well as fresh local catch from the UK coastline, such as Cornwall and Hastings, that you can see through the store windows. Staff was friendly, and this charming fish shop is a real local gem, and brings back a good old time when stores and customers had a good communication by modernizing the shop, when standardized and boring large supermarket chains are taking over the country’s commerce.

Art & Design Bookshops in London: Artwords and Magma

昨日、ブロードウェイ・マーケットのl’eau à LA BOUCHE（ロアラブッシュ）に行った時に、「Artwords Bookshop」が最近オープンしたのに気づいた。Artwords Bookshopは、コンテンポラリー・ビジュアルアート系の本や雑誌、ビデオなどを扱うショップで、Rivington PlaceがあるショーディッチのRivington Streetに、一号店がある。数坪ほどの狭いRivington Street店の方に比べ、明るく、すっきりとデザインされたブロードウェイ・マーケット店の方は、ゆったりしていて、ゆっくり本が探せる。

When we went to l’eau à LA BOUCHE on Broadway Market, we found a new art bookshop “Artwords Bookshop” on the same street. Artwords Bookshop is the specialist for books, magazines and videos on the contemporary visual arts. There is its first shop on Rivington Street in Shoreditch, near Rivington Place. In compare to the tiny shop on Rivington street, the one on Broadway Market is more spacious and light with its white interior.

もう１つのロンドンのアート・デザイン系ブックショップは、アーティストやクリエーターなら誰でも知ってるMagma books。クラーケンウェルのClerkenwell RoadとコベントガーデンのEarlham Streetにショップを持ち、コベントガーデン店の数軒先に、デザイン雑貨のセレクトショップもある。またロンドン以外に、マンチェスターに店舗がある他、オンライン・ショッピングも展開している。私たちは、家から近くて、店も広くて、客が少ないクラーケンウェルのショップに、たまに行く。

Another art & design book shop in London is Magma books, the famous shop that any artists and creators know. There is a shop on Clerkenwell Road in Clerkenwell, as well as on Earlham Street in Covent Garden. Magma also has a design product shop few steps away from the Covent Garden shop on the same street, and also a branch in Manchester as well. We prefer the Clerkenwell shop because it is bigger and less people, and closer from home.

一般的に、これらの小規模独立系書店を取り巻く状況は厳しい。テレグラフ紙の記事によると、昨年、10店のうち1店の独立系書店が閉店。1週間に3店が閉店した計算になるそうだ。不況の影響もあるけれど、それよりも大手スーパーのテスコやアマゾンの安売り価格に太刀打ちできないのが、大きな原因だ。イギリスも日本のように、小売店と出版社が本を定価で売ることを合意した「Net Book Agreement (NBA)」があったが、1995年に廃止され、値下げできる体力のある大手書店やスーパーが断然有利になった。また来月イギリスでも発売になるアップル社のiPadなど、電子ブックの普及も大きな痛手になるだろう。

お客は独立系書店に本を買いにくるのではなく、本を品定めだけして、実際は安くで買える大手書店やスーパー、またオンラインで買うのだそうだ。本のバーコードをスキャンすると、最安の価格とショップを割り出してくれるiphoneのアプリ「RedLaser」もある。私たちも急ぎでない限り、本はアマゾンで買うし（ものによると半額ぐらいになる）、iPhoneにはRedLaserもインストールしてある。このような小さな書店の苦境に同情するが、消費者が品揃えが豊富で、値段が安い方に流れるのは仕方がないし、私たちだけが小さな書店で本を買っても、一人の力ではどうしようもない。独立系書店は専門書やなかなか手に入らない本に特化するなど、商品のラインナップに工夫を凝らすか、何かプラスαをつけないと生き残れなくなっている。そして、より多くの人をターゲットに出来るように、オンライン・ショップも必須だ。大変だけれど、時代の変化についていくしかない。

Circumstance of these independent shops is quite tough now in UK. According to an article in the Telegraph, one in 10 independent bookshops closed last year, at a rate of three a week. Recession is one of the reason, but the evils that let these small shops go bust are the big retailers such as Tesco or Amazon that sell largely discounted book. After the abolition of the Net Book Agreement (NBA) in 1995, which was an arrangement between publishers and booksellers that ensured books could not be offered at discounted prices (I believe Japan still has similar rule), the big retailers can cut the price big with the selling and negotiation power with the publishers and have been in much better positions than small bookshops. Emerging of e-book market and electronic book readers, including Apple’s iPad, could be a final blow to them.

Customers come to a bookshop to find what they want, but buy with cheaper price at a big bookshop, supermarket or online. iPhone app “RedLaser” lets you scan a book’s bar code and find the cheapest price. We also buy books at Amazon if the price is much cheaper and when we are not in hurry, and RedLaser is on our iPhone as well. I feel sorry for the small shops, but it is capitalism that customers go for cheaper prices, and we can’t help these shops by buying books from them, if we are alone. There are not much choice for the small independent shops to survive – either to specialize in one area such as Magma or Artwords, to stock up rare books that are not easy to find, or to give an extra service that other shops don’t. Also going online is a must to reach out to more customers. Unfortunately, the time has changed and small business has to adopt it…

A Day Trip to Canterbury

ロンドンのセント・パンクラス駅から、サウスイースタン鉄道の高速列車で1時間弱、ケント州にあるカンタベリー。城壁に囲まれた、中世の面影が色濃く残るこの街は、601年に修道士アウグスティヌスが初代カンタベリー大司教に就任して以来、イングランドのキリスト教の中心地として、1400年に渡って多くの巡礼者を迎え入れてきた。イングランド国教会の総本山であるカンタベリー大聖堂は、世界遺産に登録されており、毎年世界中から観光客が訪れる。私が行った日は週末で、ユーロスターで来やすいからか、フランス人、特に学生がたくさんいて、街で聞こえる声は、半数以上がフランス語だった。

Canterbury in Kent is just about an hour away from St. Pancras station in Lonon by Southeastern‘s HS1 (High Speed 1, High-speed rail service). Surrounded by medieval walls, Canterbury is an important historic town and has been the center of Christianity in England for about 1,400 years, after St Augustine became the first Archbishop of Canterbury, a position that now heads the Church of England and the worldwide Anglican Communion. Canterbury Cathedral where the home of the Archbishop of Canterbury, is registered as one of the World Heritage Site and attracts many tourists from all over the world. It was on weekend when I went to Canterbury, and there are so many French visited there (easy access from France with Eurostar), especially students, and I heard speaking French all over the town.

カンタベリーにはCanterbury East駅とWest駅があるが、セント・パンクラス駅からの高速列車は、Canterbury West駅に到着する。駅から歩いて約6分、旧市街の入口となるWestgate（ウェストゲート・タワーズ）が見えてくる。現在は博物館であるウェストゲート・タワーズは、全8つ建てられたゲートの中で、唯一原形をとどめており、またイングランドで現存する最大のゲートだそうだ。

There are two stations in Canterbury, Canterbury East and West, and the HS1 trains arrive at Canterbury West station. About 6 minutes walk, you will see the Westgate, the entrance to the old town. Westgate Towers, now houses a museum, is the only gate preserved among all eight gates constructed, and is the largest surviving city gate in England.

ストゥール川沿いにたたずむ中世のチューダー様式の建物、「Huguenot weavers’ houses（ユグノーの手織りシルクの店）」。16世紀の半ばに迫害を逃れてきた、フランス語を話すプロテスタント・ユグノー（Huguenot：改革派教会／カルヴァン主義）たちは、17世紀までにカンタベリーの人口5000人のうち2000人を占め、絹織物産業をカンタベリーにもたらした。

French-speaking Protestant Huguenots had begun fleeing persecution in the mid-16th century, and by the 17th century, the number of Huguenots was 2,000, while Canterbury’s population was 5,000. The Huguenots introduced silk weaving into the city.

カンタベリー大聖堂の歴史は、597年に教皇グレゴリウス1世の命を受けた修道士、聖アウグスティヌスが伝道師として派遣され、司教としてカンタベリーにその座を据えたことに始まる。幾度にも渡る再建、増築を経た大聖堂は、ロマネスク様式とゴシック様式が混合された建築となっている。

この大聖堂は、当時の王ヘンリー2世と争った、大司教トーマス・ベケットが1170年に暗殺された場所で、それ以来、ベケット殉教の地として、大勢の巡礼者が訪れるようになった。ジェフリー・チョーサーの「カンタベリー物語」では、当時のカンタベリー巡礼の様子を垣間みることが出来る。

The Cathedral‘s history goes back to 597AD when St. Augustine, sent by Pope Gregory the Great as a missionary, established his seat (or ‘Cathedra’) in Canterbury. The Cathedral’s art and architecture reflect a mixture of Romanesque and Gothic style, by rebuilding and extension over time.

In 1170, Archbishop Thomas Becket was murdered by knights of King Henry II in the Cathedral, and ever since, the Cathedral has attracted thousands of pilgrims. Geoffrey Chaucer‘s “The Canterbury Tales” is a collection of stories about pilgrims who came to Canterbury.

16世紀までベネディクト会修道院があった、聖オーガスティン（アウグスティヌス）修道院。ヘンリー8世が1538年に発令した修道院解散法（Dissolution of the Monasteries）によって取り壊された。その後、宮殿や庭として利用されたりしていたが現在は廃墟となり、イングリッシュ・ヘリテッジ（English Heritage）に管理されている。大聖堂、聖マーティン教会（写真下）とともに、ユネスコの世界遺産に登録されている。見学料大人£4.30（2010年3月現在）。

St Augustine’s Abbey was a Benedictine abbey and a World Heritage Site, along with the Cathedral and St. Martin’s Church (photo below). The abbey was dismantled under 1538’s dissolution of Henry VIII. Later the site was converted to a palace and a garden, and now the ruins of this monastic foundation are in the care of English Heritage. Admission for adult is £4.30 (as of March, 2010).

Greyfriars Chapelは、13世紀に建てられたチャペルで、1224年に最初のフランシスコ会修道士がイギリスに到着してから最初の住居として使われた、イギリスで最古のフランシスコ会の建造物。ストゥール川をまたいで建てられ、周りを庭で囲まれた、この小さくて可愛い教会は、観光客の少ない穴場。観光で歩き疲れた時に休憩するのにぴったりの場所。

Greyfriars Chapel is a 13th century chapel and house of the first Franciscan settlement in Britain in the years following the arrival of the first Friars in 1224, and the oldest Franciscan building in UK. Surrounded by peaceful gardens, this small and attractive chapel is a hidden gem in Canterbury, where not many tourists visit.

The Independent Newspaper Now is on a Hand of a Former KGB Officer

本日、発行から間がない歴史の浅い新聞の一つで、全国紙の中で最も発行部数が少ない高級日刊紙「インディペンデント」が、旧ソ連国家保安委員会（ＫＧＢ）の元エージェントで、ロシアのオリガルヒの一人であるアレクサンドル・レベジェフ（Alexander Lebedev）氏に、1ポンドで買収されることになった。現オーナーであるアイルランドのIndependent News & Media（INM）社によると、2009年は3100万ユーロ（277万ポンド）の損失（税引き前）を計上しており、1989年には40万部以上を誇った発行部数も、 2010年2月には18万3547部に減少、昨年に比べて10.88％減となっていた。契約によると、レベジェフ氏が将来発生する可能性のあるリスクを負う代わりに、INM社は、今後10カ月間にわたり、同氏に925万ポンドを支払うとしている。レベジェフ氏は、2009年1月にも、経営不振に陥っていたロンドンの夕刊紙「イブニング・スタンダード」を1ポンドで買収しているが、その後イブニング・スタンダード紙は無料化され、発行部数も3倍になった。インディペンデント紙も無料化されるのではと言う憶測もあるが、レベジェフ氏のスポークスマンによると、現時点では何も決まっていないそうだ。

Mは、インディペンデント紙は理想主義的で非現実すぎると、嫌っているが、私は一時期、土曜日版にある、懸賞付きのSuper Sudoku（縦横16マスの大きな数独）に凝ったことがあって、この為だけに土曜日版を買っていたのだけれど、経営不振のせいからなのか、だんだん賞品がみすぼらしくなってきて、そのうちに熱が冷めて買うのを止めてしまった。1年ぐらいはやっていたかな？その間、加盟シアターで使えるシアター券£50、本2冊（興味ない本だったけれど）と計三回当選し、数独の腕前もかなり上がった。でもMは、私の数独中毒のせいで、面白くもないインディペンデント紙を買うはめになる上、私があんまり熱中して口もきかなくなるので、文句ばかり言ってたけれど。

The one of the youngest and smallest-selling national newspaper, the Independent has been sold to former KGB agent and on of the Russian oligarchs, Alexander Lebedev for £1, from Irish publisher Independent News & Media (INM). INM has reported a pre-tax loss of €31m (£27.7m) in 2009. The paper had a daily circulation of 183,547 copies in February 2010, down from a circulation of over 400,000 in 1989, and 10.88% from the previous year. INM agreed to pay Lebedev £9.25m over the next 10 months to take on the future liabilities of the loss-making newspapers. Lebedev also bought the London Evening Standard last year for £1, and made its distribution tripled by making the paper free of charge. There is a speculation that the Independent will be free as well, but there is no decision as to whether it’s free or not, according to Lebedev spokesman.

Founded in 1986 by three former Daily Telegraph journalists, the Independent takes center-left / liberal political stance. The paper has also taken strong positions on environmental issues and against the restriction of mass immigration. It has been critical of 2003 Invasion of Iraq, and US and UK foreign policy related to the War on Terrorism. The Independent changed its format from broadsheet to ‘compact’ version from September 2003, and redesigned its layout in 2005. However, this couldn’t help the paper to get out of its financial trouble, due to the recession and reduced income from advertising.

M criticizes the Independent’s political position as too idealistic and too unrealistic. I am not a big fan of the Independent either, but I was addicted to the “Prize Super Sudoku” with 16×16 boxes on the Saturday Independent, and I bought the Independent only for the Super Sudoku for a while. I don’t know if it is due to its financial problem or some other reason, but the prize had been downgraded by time, and I lost my passion and stopped buying the paper. I had been doing it for about a year maybe, and I improved my Sudoku skills and won three prizes,  £50 theater token and two books that I was not interested in and gave to my friends. During my addiction, M complained every Saturday as he had to read the Independent and I was so into it and stopped talking to him every time I started to play it.

セント・パンクラス駅のコンコースには、ヨーロッパ最大のシャンパン・バーをはじめ、レストランやカフェ、ドラッグストアや本屋、ギフトショップなどの小売店のテナントが50以上入っている。その中で、なかなかいい感じなのが、奥のガラス張りのビルThe Circle内にある、高品質で新鮮な旬の食料品を扱うお店・Sourced Market。フルーツや野菜は、できるだけ国産品を扱い、航空便で運ばれたものは置いていない。肉類は、オーガニックで放し飼いされた家畜のもので、シーフード類は近海で捕れたものか、維持可能な養殖もの。パン類やケーキ、クッキーなどは、こだわりのベーカリーから毎日配達されている。ビールやワインセクションも充実、またパスタや米などの乾物、紅茶やコーヒー類、そしてイギリスの食卓には欠かせない、HPソースやColman’sのマスタード、マーマイト（人によって好き嫌いが分かれるけれど）も売っている。

イートイン用のテーブルもあるので、朝はフレッシュなクロワッサンやソーセージロール、ペストリー類に、フレッシュジュースとスムージー、そして紅茶か、味に定評のあるMonmouth coffeeを。ランチやディナーはサラダやスープ、パイ、スコッチエッグ、そしてClerkenwell（クラーケンウェル）にあるガストロパブ（おいしい食事を提供するパブ）「The Coach and Horses」から運ばれてくる温かい食事が楽しめる。また電車の待ち時間の間に、ビールやワイン、サイダー（リンゴ酒）を片手に、「Olive Bar」のオリーブや前菜の盛り合わせをつまむのもいい。

白く塗られたカウンターや棚、タイル張りの壁など、カントリー風のインテリアや、ディスプレイも素敵で、中を見てまわるだけでもハッピーな気分になるお店です。

Newly renovated St.Pancras Station houses over 50 retailers such as cafes, bars, and restaurants, and shops. The most known place is “The Champagne Bar at St Pancras,” the longest Champagne Bar in Europe, but my favorite place is Sourced Market, inside the glass building “The Circle” on the back of the station. Their fresh fruit and vegetables are locally sourced where possible, and nothing is air-freighted. Meat is free range and organic, and fish and seafood is sustainably farmed or line-caught from UK waters. Artisan breads, pastries and brownies baked fresh and delivered daily. Beer and wine section has a good selection, and range of pantry items such as pasta, rice, tea, coffee and British favourites such as HP Sauce, Colman’s mustard and Marmite are sold as well.

There are also eat-in area in the shop: for breakfast, choose from fresh croissants, pastries or sausage rolls with fresh juices and smoothies, finishing with tea or Monmouth coffee. For lunch and dinner, salads, soups, stews, pies, Scotch eggs and a selection of hot dishes direct from a Clerkenwell gastropub, The Coach and Horses, are available. You can also have olives or antipasti from Olive Bar, together with a glass of wine, beer or cider, while waiting for your train.

Country-style wooden counters and shelves painted in white and tiled walls are chic, and the displays of the products are pretty as well – it is pleasurable just looking around the store.
