長いクリスマス・ホリデーがようやく終わった。今年はクリスマスが土曜日に当たったので、クリスマスの休日が27日（月曜日）に、そしてボクシング・デーが28日（火曜日）にずれ込んだからだ。ようやく通常の生活に戻ると思いきや、数日するとまたまた新年の休日（1日〜3日）になってしまうので、その間ずっと閉まっているお店やレストランも多い。→イギリスの休日（バンク・ホリデー）はこちらで。

上のビデオは、今日、BBCで放映されるドキュメンタリー「Poler Bear – Spy on the Ice」から抜粋されたもの。撮影に使われた「spy cams（スパイカメラ）」を、好奇心から近づいたホッキョクグマが、見事に破壊する姿が妙に可愛い。つまらない番組が幅を利かせているホリデー・シーズン中、少しは楽しめそうな、数少ない番組。

テレビもつまらないし、ホリデーシーズンでちゃんと機能していないロンドンを、明日からしばらく抜け出します。1月10日はブログを再開しようと思っていますので、皆さん、良い年末年始をお過ごしくださいね！

Finally long Christmas weekend was over. Christmas day was on Saturday this year, so Monday 27th became Christmas day holiday and Tuesday 28th was Boxing Day holiday subsequently. But the business here is still far from normal and many business and restaurants remain closed, as New Year’s weekend (1st to 3rd) will come in few days time. → check here for UK bank holidays

The video above is an excerpt of the BBC documentary “Poler Bear – Spy on the Ice” starts soon today. Curiosity-ridden polar bears destroy disguised hi-tech “spy cams” – it is cute and funny. Among all the boring TV programs and films during this holiday season, this documentary is one of the few programs enjoyable to see.

TV is full of trash this time and the city is not fully functioning, therefore we will get out of the town for a while from tomorrow. I will restart this blog on January 10th (hopefully). Have a happy new year everyone!

Christmas Eve 2010

現在の気温は0度程度と、今日も寒い。クリスマス・イブの今日は、お店もレストランもお休みか早仕舞い、スーパーマーケットはクリスマス前の最後の買い物をする人たちで大賑わい。多くの人は家路に着いた街は、人影もまばら。

クリスチャンでもクリスチャンじゃなくても、家族や友人と一緒でも一人でも、誰もが素敵なひと時を過ごせますように。

It is cold today and current temperature is around 0º. Business, shops and restaurants are closed or close earlier on Christmas Eve. A supermarket was full of people for last minute’s shopping, but streets are deserted after people left for home.

Wishing all of you a very merry Christmas, Christians or non-Christians, with family and friends, or even alone!

Range Rover Evoque Wireframe @ N1 Shopping Centre, Islington

エンジェルにあるショッピング・センター、N1 Shopping Centreに設置された、ショッキングピンクの、新型レンジ・ローバーEvoque（イヴォーク）実物大ワイヤー・フレーム模型（→イヴォークのブログ）。季節柄、最初はクリスマスのデコレーションかと思った。

I found this shocking pink full-scale wireframe model of the new Range Rover Evoque at the N1 Shopping Centre in Angel, Islington (→Evoque’s blog). I thought it was a sort of Christmas decoration at first.

パリで行われたモーターショー2010でのイヴォーク一般公開を記念し、レンジ・ローバーとパリジャン・アーティスト4人がコラボ。ワイヤー・フレームを元に、各々、イヴォークの4つのコンセプト「sustainability, luxury, design and technology（持続可能性、高級、デザイン、テクノロジー）」をイメージして創られた、アート・インスタレーションがパリ市内4カ所で展示された。参加アーティストの一人、ファッション・デザイナーのジャンシャルル・ド・カステルバジャック（Jean-Charles de Castelbajac）は、luxuryをテーマにした作品を作製（写真はこちら）。

Range Rover has collaborated with four Parisian artists to celebrate the new compact city car, which debuted at Paris Motor Show 2010. Each artist was briefed to create art installations based on the wire frame of the Evoque, and these designs were created around the four key attributes of the car; sustainability, luxury, design and technology. One of the participated artists, fashion designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac made an installation based on the theme “luxury” (here for photos).

Free Travel on New Year’ Eve, at Loan Company’s Expense

今日、バス停で見かけたポスター。大晦日の夜の11時45分から元旦の朝4時30分まで、ロンドン地下鉄、バス、トラムリンク、DLR（ドックランズ・ライト・レイルウェイ）が無料になるそうだ。これは、最高利子率2,600％もの高利でお金を貸すといわれるローン会社、Wonga.comがスポンサーになっている。「sometimes you need some extra cash（余分な現金が必要な時もある）」というキャッチフレーズのWonga.comの宣伝ポスターが、ロンドンの交通網に張り出され、高利貸しをスポンサーとして受け入れた市長が批判にさらされている（関連記事 1/2）。市長の広報担当者は、Wonga.comはロンドンの人々に有益な貢献をしていると弁解するけれど、市営交通だけに、もっとまともなスポンサーを探せばよかったのに。

This is the poster I saw on a bus stop today. Travel will be free on all journeys between 23:45 on New Year’s Eve and 04:30 on New Year’s Day, on London’s bus, Tube, Tramlink and DLR (Docklands Light Railway) services. This scheme is sponsored by Wonga.com, a high interest loan firm which offers cash at rates of up to massive 2,600%. Posters advertising Wonga.com, saying “sometimes you need some extra cash” have been put up on the London’s transport network, and the mayor’s decision to accept sponsorship from a “loan shark” firm is highly criticized (article 1/2). Mayor Boris Johnson’s spokesman said Wonga.com had made a “useful contribution” to Londoners, but why loan company?? There must be more suitable company for London’s public transport…

ローン会社だから、という訳ではないかもしれないけれど、電光掲示板を使ったスタイリッシュなポスターと違い、ケバケバしくてセンスがない。

It may or may not be because it is made by a loan company, the poster is cheesy in compare to a stylish poster featuring LED display.

Cologne Christmas Market @ Southbank

今年で3回目となるCologne Christmas Marketが12月23日まで、テムズ川沿いのSouthbank Centre/Royal Festival Hall（サウス・バンク・センター／ロイヤル・フェスティバル・ホールとLondon Eye（ロンドン・アイ）の間で開催中。伝統的なドイツのクリスマス・マーケットをロンドンに再現したこのマーケットには、60近くの木造のシャレーが並び、ブラートヴルスト（ドイツのソーセージ）、グリューワイン、ハート形のジンジャーブレッド、ローストしたアーモンドやキャンディーなどのフード＆ドリンク、そして手作りのおもちゃやジュエリー、レース、ろうそく、陶芸品や、クリスマスツリーのオーナメントなどの工芸品を売っている。また、メリーゴーランドや、子供向けの30分のショーが行われるSanta’s Secret Villageもある。

写真は去年のものだけれど、去年も今年も基本的に変わってない。何年か前、ウィーンに旅行した時にクリスマス・マーケットを体験したけれど、サウスバンクのと何かが違う。何が違うかと考えたら、ウィーンのクリスマス・マーケットは、もっときらびやかに飾られていて活気があり、訪れている人々もとても幸せそうだった。でもサウスバンクのは、中途半端で盛り上がりに欠け、何だかうら寂しげ。人々もあんまり楽しんでるように見えない。違う文化の伝統を形だけ真似するのではなく、もうひと工夫してほしいところ。

Cologne Christmas Market is taking place for the third time between the Southbank Centre/Royal Festival Hall and London Eye along the River Thames. Bringing a traditional German Christmas Market to London, around 60 traditionally decorated wooden chalets sell German specialty such as “Bratwurst”, a glass of “Glühwein” (German Mulled Wine), gingerbread hearts, roasted almonds and candies, as well as handcrafted gifts, toys, jewelry, hand tatted laces, candles, ceramics and glass ornaments for Christmas tree. There are also the carousel and Santa’s Secret Village that houses 30-minute children’s shows, to entertain small visitors.

These photos are of last year’s, but it is more or less the same this year. I went to Christmas markets in Vienna few years ago, and it was much more fun than the Southbank’s, which is rather sad and depressing. Christmas markets in Vienna was more glittering and lively that gave me true festive feelings. Visitors there looked far more happier than the ones in Southbank who looked bored or little interested. The organizer must work harder, instead of just making a bad copy of a festivity from foreign culture.
