Urban Smart Projects “For the love of Dog” by Teddy Baden @ Banner Street

ステンシルアーティスト、Teddy Badenの「Dogs on Whitecross Market」がなくなってしばらく経つWhitecross Streetに、彼の新しい作品「For the love of Dog（犬のために）」が登場した。これは、道路脇にある信号機のコントロールボックス（traffic signal boxes）をアートで飾ろうという「Urban Smart Projects」の一環で、Banner Streetとの交差点にある。また、このプロジェクト作品も同じWhitecross Streetにある。

Urban Smart Projectsは、ロンドン以外でも様々な都市で行われているそう。ちなみに、オーストラリア・ブリスベーンでのプロジェクトの様子は、この方のブログに詳しい。イギリスでは、カウンシル（区役所）は住民から通報を受けると、公共の建物や道路周辺、記念碑などからグラフィティを消去する義務を負う。そのために使われる多額の税金を考えると、逆の思考でいっそアートで塗りつぶしてしまえというのがプロジェクトの主旨。加えて、地域に活力を与え、観光にもビジネスにもプラスになるという、まさに一石二鳥のプロジェクトだとのこと。でもプロのアーティストの作品ばかりじゃないから、玉石混淆だけれどね。

It’s been a while since stencil artist Teddy Baden‘s “Dogs on Whitecross Market” was gone from Whitecross street, but his work is back! His new work “For the love of Dog“, located on Banner Street and Whitecross street, is a part of Urban Smart Projects which aims to turn cities into brighter places by painting of traffic signal boxes with original artwork. You also can see this work on the Whitecross Street as well.

The projects work in a lot of different cities, including Brisbane, Australia (details are here). In UK, a local council is usually responsible for removing graffiti from public buildings, street furniture or monuments when reported. According to the project, the concept is to paint traffic signal boxes, instead of wasting taxpayers’ money for graffiti removal, as well as to provide positive impacts to local communities and delivering a host of positive tourism & business outcomes. It’s a win-win situation – though the works are a mixture of good and bad, as not all of the paintings are done by professional artists.

Department of Coffee and Social Affairs @ Leather Lane

宝石商が並ぶHatton Garden（ハットン・ガーデン）に平行するLeather Lane（レザー・レーン）に最近出来たカフェ、Department of Coffee and Social Affairs。直訳すれば「コーヒー及び社会問題省（部門）」という、堅苦しい役所めいた名前とは裏腹に、建築関係の金物屋であった建物を改装した店内は、広々としていて、黒の木製家具でシンプルにまとめられていてリラックスできる。未塗装の茶レンガ壁や、少し剥げた塗装、そして窓が茶紙で覆われていたりするところも、味があっていい。

Climpson & Sonsから仕入れたコーヒー豆やエスプレッソ・マシーンのフェラーリと言われるLa Marzocco（ラ・マルゾッコ）に、コーヒーへのこだわりが感じられる。ティーバッグじゃなく茶葉でいれる紅茶（紅茶の本場・イギリスでも通常ティーバッグを使う）を持ってきてくれる時、最適の抽出時間を教えてくれるのも気が利いてる。新鮮な材料と美味しいパンを使ったサンドイッチも美味しい。も超ナイスなスタッフは、注文時に、微妙に形やサイズの違う同種類のサンドイッチの中から、どれが欲しいかまで聞いてくれる。唯一の心残りは、ケーキが2種類しかなかったこと。その時、売り切れていただけなのかもしれないけれど。でもポルトガル風エッグタルトは美味しかった。

Department of Coffee and Social Affairs is a newly opened café on Leather Lane, parallel to London’s jewelry trade center Hatton Garden. This spacious café,  a renovated and remodelled architectural ironmongers, is simply decorated with wooden black furniture and quite laid-back, on contrary to its rigid name which sounds like a government department. Bare brown brick walls as well as worn-off wall paintings and a window covered with brown papers also gives nice and raw atmosphere.

You can see the café’s passion in coffee on their use of the espresso machine of Ferrari La Marzocco and coffee beans from quality roaster Climpson & Sons. It doesn’t mean that they don’t take tea seriously either – a cup of tea is served with loose tea leaves, not tea bags like at most cafés in UK, together with an advice of optimal brewing time. Their freshly made sandwiches are great, and a friendly staff even asked what I wanted among the same kind of sandwiches but slightly different in size and shape! One little disappointment was that they had only two kinds of cakes (though their Portuguese egg tart was delicious) – maybe just sold-out that time?

Camden Passage Antique Market @ Angel, Islington

イズリントン・エンジェルにある有名なアンティーク・マーケット、Camden Passage（カムデン・パッセージ）。1960年代にアンティーク・マーケットが開かれるようになった。昔ながらの店構えを残すカムデン・パッセージは、外国人がイメージするイギリスを体現している。昨日のショーディッチのマーケットと比べるとずいぶん落ち着きがあって、のんびり散策するのにぴったり。トラムの車庫であった建物にテナントとして入っていたり、脇に入った小道に小さい店を構えていたり、屋台を出していたりと、店の形態も様々だ。

マーケットの開かれる毎週水・土曜日以外も開いている店もあり、またElk in the WoodsやBreakfast Clubといったカフェやパブ、毛糸のお店Loopや可愛い雑貨屋のSMUG、オーガニックのフローズン・ヨーグルトを売るFrae、高級チョコレートを扱うPaul A Young、またイギリス人女優のSadie Frost（サディ・フロスト。ジュード・ロウの元妻）とJemima Frenchが経営するFrostFrenchと言うブティックもあって、マーケットがない日でも人通りが絶えない。

Camden Passage is known for its antiques shops, and hosts antique market founded in the 1960s on Wednesdays and Saturday mornings. The street still keeps old storefronts and signage and the good old Britishness that foreign visitors imagine of. It is much more tranquil and better looking in compare to the anarchic Shoreditch market, and perfect place for strolling around. There are different styles of shops: tenants in a former tram shed, small shops in an arcade or on a side alley, and market stools on the street.

The street is never be deserted as many shops open other than market days and there are also non-antique shops to attract visitors, such as cafés and pubs like The Elk in the Woods and The Breakfast Club, Loop yarn shop, SMUG lifestyle store, organic frozen yoghurt shop Frae, Paul A Young chocolaterie, and FrostFrench boutique owned by British actress Sadie Frost (Jude Law’s ex) and Jemima French.

Another Sunday Market @ Shoreditch

Pizza Eastでロンドンでの今年初のランチをとった後、ぶらぶら歩いて、Shoreditch High Street駅から東、ブリックレーンに連なる道に出ているマーケットを見て歩いた。昨年、Shoreditch High Street駅がオープンしてますます再開発が進み、ヒップでトレンディになりつつあるショーディッチにおいて、猥雑なイースト・ロンドン的雰囲気を色濃く残すこのマーケットは、かなり衝撃的。駅の横の果物・野菜の屋台を皮切りに、日用品や電化製品、文房具、自転車用品、古着、アンティーク、中古家具まで、日常生活に必要な物が何でも手に入り、イタリアやフランスの食品を売る屋台もある。が、売っている物の多くは、安物かガラクタ、もしかすると盗品も混じっているかもしれない。

We walked around a market on a street connecting Shoreditch High Street station and Brick lane, after the first lunch in London this year at Pizza East. It is quite a shock to see such a market with stereotypical chaotic East London atmosphere in Shoreditch, where is becoming trendy and hip after a series of redevelopment projects together with an opening of the new station last year. Starting with fruits and vegetable sellers next to the station, you can basically buy anything you need for daily life from household products, home electronics, stationaries, bicycle parts, used clothing and accessories, second-hand furniture, antiques and all kinds of bric-a-brac, as well as Italian and French food – but unfortunately mostly cheap stuffs and junk, or even possibly some stolen things.

何故か、自転車パーツを売る店が多い。Brick Laneは盗難自転車を売っている事で密かに有名だが、そこで買った中古自転車をチューンアップするためか。

There are some vendors selling bicycle parts. Is it for a tune-up of a bicycle purchased from Brick Lane (known for selling stolen bikes)??

駐車場と思われるスペースに入ると、そこは品物が無造作に置かれ、ゴミが散乱するワイルドな空間。服や靴、がらくたが積んである入口には人だかりが。この中から何をどうやって探すんだろう？？

When we entered a space supposedly used as a car-park on non-market days, it was a chaos – products and trashes were all over the place. There was a mountain of clothes, shoes and bric-a-brac. How on earth people find anything from it??

この無秩序さは、ロンドンというより、発展途上国のマーケットのよう。

This sort of disorder is more like a market in developing countries, rather than London.

雑多な人々、品物に圧倒される。友人や観光客にお薦めするようなマーケットではないけれど、ロンドンにはこういうところもあるという事で。

We were overwhelmed by people and stuffs. I don’t necessarily recommend the market for tourists or friends, but just to show another side of London, for your interest.
