Cory Arcangel: Beat the Champ @ Curve Barbican Art Gallery

「Archipelago」（昨日のブログ参照）を見た帰りに、同じくバービカン・センターにあるCurve （カーヴ）Art Galleryで開催中の「Cory Arcangel: Beat the Champ」展（2月10日〜5月22日）を見た。コリー・アーケンジェルは、ニューヨーク・ブルックリンを拠点とするデジタル・アーティスト。「Beat the Champ」展では、1970年代から2000年代のボーリングのコンピュータ・ゲーム14本を、それぞれのコントローラにコンピュータ・チップをつけて、自動的にプレーさせている。「チャンピオンを負かせ」とタイトルは勇ましいけれど、チップでプレーさせているため、プレーヤーはヘタクソ、ガーターのオンパレード。古いソフトほど荒っぽくて画質が悪く、ガーターを出したプレーヤーが悔しがる姿が、妙にカクカクしていて可笑しい。原色で安っぽい画面といい、うるさいサウンドといい、大昔友人たちとゲーセンに行った時の事を思い出し、ふと懐かしい気分になった。

After we saw the movie “Archipelago” (see yesterday’s entry), we stopped by the Curve Barbican Art Gallery to see “Cory Arcangel: Beat the Champ” (Feb 10 – May 22). Cory Arcangel is a Brooklyn-based American digital artist. “Beat the Champ” is an installation featuring 14 bowling video games from the 1970s to the 2000s. Using custom manufactured electronics, each video game console has a small computer chip attached, and video games are automatically played in real time. Since computer chips are ‘playing’ bowling, the bowlers fail to score, with garter after garter. Older games have jagged images, and it is quite funny to look at the bowlers stamping their feet with awkward movements. Those games’ cheap and prime colored screens and the annoying mechanical sounds brought back my memory of hanging around (though not many times, for my honor) at a game arcade with friends – long long time ago.

Archipelago @ Barbican Cinema 1

イギリスに長く住んでいるのに、映画好きなのに、よく考えてみたらイギリス映画はあんまり見ていない。私にとって、イギリス映画と言えば、シェイクスピアや王室関係などの歴史もの、ジェームズ・ボンドシリーズ、ハリー・ポッター、そしてフル・モンティやトレインスポッティングなどの労働者階級もの、そしてブリジット・ジョーンズの日記やノッティングヒルの恋人といったラブコメで、これらのジャンルにはあんまり興味がない。一般的に、イギリス映画は印象が薄いというか、インパクトに欠け、何故かそそられない。それにフランス映画のように、人間関係の描写が上手くもない。その中で最近、イギリス人映画評論家たちが口を揃えて絶賛したアートハウス系イギリス映画「Archipelago（群島）」を、期待満々で見に行った。あらすじとしては、

息子のエドワードがアフリカにボランティアに行く前に、想い出に家族旅行をしようと、母パトリシアはシリー諸島に別荘を借りた。母と姉のシンシアが先に到着。エドワードも少し遅れてやってきた。シンシアは何故かいつも不機嫌で情緒不安定。エドワードは、自分のしようとしている事に意味があるのか悩む。父親は、待てど暮らせど言い訳ばかりで来ず、状態をもてあます母親はついにプッチン。料理係として雇われたローズと、母とシンシアに絵画を教えるクリストファーが緩衝役になるも、時間が経つにつれ、家族内の緊張は高まっていく。

と言う話だが、何か起こりそうで何も起こらない。ストーリーラインも特にない。シンシアのいらいらは意味不明だし、エドワードは理想主義でナイーブな、典型的なお坊っちゃま。母は言いたいこともはっきり言えず、鬱屈するのみ。そして彼らの会話の空虚でつまらない事といったら！イギリスのミドルクラス（日本で言う中流よりもステイタスが上の感じ）のお方々は、こんなに気取った退屈な会話をするのか。上映約2時間の間ムカムカし、気持ちの良い眠りにさえつけなかった。私だけがこの「高尚な」会話を理解できないのかと思っていたら、何人かが途中で席を立ったまま帰ってこなかった。

「A car-crash compelling, painfully comic distillation of modern British middle class mores（交通事故のように注目せずにいられない、現代のイギリスのミドルクラスを痛々しいほど滑稽に凝縮）」「subtle film of sensed absences（感じさせる不在を扱う巧みな映画）」「sad, funny, wise film（悲しくて可笑しい、賢明な映画）」等々、いつもは辛口の評論家たちが大げさな好評価を与える理由が全く分からない。思うに、自身もミドルクラスである評論家たちだから理解できる、ミドルクラスによるミドルクラスのための映画で、内輪でしか共感できないんだろう。

ただ、映像はとても綺麗で、島の風景も素晴らしい。家族の会話は全部カットして、島の観光用CMとして利用するのにはいいかもしれない。

We are movie fans and have been living in UK for a while, but rarely see British movies. British movies I come up with are period movies such as of Shakespeare and the Royal family, James Bond series, Harry Potter, and movies talking about working class like the Full Monty and Trainspotting, as well as rom-com Bridget Jones’s Diary and Notting Hill – those subject matters are not really my cup of tea. In general, British movies are colorless and don’t have a ‘punch’ to grab our attention. Also they are not good at portraying relationship as French or American do. We recently saw “Archipelago“, an art house movie that all the British movie critiques love (which is quite rare), with full of expectation.

The summary is like this (excerpt from Wikipedia):

A darkly comic and quietly moving portrayal of a family in emotional crisis. Before Edward leaves to do voluntary work in Africa, his mother Patricia gathers the family together on a remote island of Scilly as a farewell trip to say goodbye to Edward. His sister Cynthia doesn’t seem to want to be there, and although hired cook Rose and painting teacher Christopher are brought in to help, they only serve to bring the family’s anxieties to the surface. Grouped together on the island, and with their father’s absence becoming increasingly conspicous, the tensions and resentments within the family are drawn into sharper and sharper focus as the holiday progresses.

Basically, nothing happens and there is no story line in this movie. I have no clue why Cynthia is so grumpy, and Edward is a typical idealistic naive boy from a good family with no sense of true reality. Their mother is so hopeless to deal with the situation alone, and burst out to her absent husband, who always makes excuses not to come. The most irritating thing in the movie is their boring and nonsense superficial conversation! I was so annoyed and couldn’t even fall a sleep. Do British middle class people all talk like that?! I hope not. I thought it’s only me who don’t enjoy these ‘sophisticated’ conversation, but some of the audiences left the cinema in the middle, so I am not the only one!

“A car-crash compelling, painfully comic distillation of modern British middle class mores” “subtle film of sensed absences” “sad, funny, wise film” etc, etc – I just can’t comprehend why normally strict film critiques all applaud the movie. I assume, “Archipelago” is the movie by British middle class and for British middle class. That’s why British film critiques who are middle class themselves can empathize with the movie. Not for everyone else…

But cinematography is beautiful and intriguingly atmospheric. Perfect for TV commercial of Isles of Scilly tourism – without all the family talks but the images of astonishing nature.

Labour and Wait @ Redchurch Street

Labour and Waitは、レトロで温かみのある、飽きのこないデザインの生活雑貨を扱うお店。2000年に、ブリックレーン近くのCheshire Streetにオープン。昨年、Redchurch Streetにも一回り大きい店をオープンさせた。世界中から、職人たちが昔ながらの製法で作る、機能的かつ現代でも通用するデザインの商品を仕入れており、日本の野田琺瑯のホーロー鍋やポットなども取り扱う。

日本でも似たような店を見かけたし、日本人が好きそうなお店だなあと思っていたが、このブログのためにお店の事を調べていたら、なんと日本にも11店舗あるんだそう（Bshopという会社が展開）。そのうち何店かは、日本に一時帰国した際に立ち寄っていた。道理で見覚えがあると思った。

Labour and Wait is a shop selling retro and functional everyday household goods for kitchen, home and garden. First opened in 2000 on Cheshire Street off Brick Lane, now it has a new larger store on hip Redchurch Street. The store deals with quality products made by specialist makers from around the world, who continue to manufacture their goods in the traditional way to their original designs, including enamel cookware by Japan’s Noda Horo.

I thought the store looked familiar when we went there, and found out while I was checking their website for this blog, that Labour and Wait has 11 outlets in Japan, concessions sited within a store called Bshop! I went to some of those shops several times when I visited my family in Japan – I just couldn’t connect those shops to Labour and Wait!!

購入した小さな黒板（£6）と黒板消し（£2.5）。チョークは、以前、海外旅行した時に、蚤の市で買ったもの。

We bought a small school slate (£6) and a felt eraser (£2.5). Chalk is previously purchased at an antique market abroad.

“Hokusai Tsunami print for Japan” Charity Print by Pure Evil

ポップ/ゴシック・グラフィティ・アーティストを自称するPure Evilが、自身のオンラインショップで、葛飾北斎の「富嶽三十六景波裏」をモチーフにした「Hokusai Tsunami print for Japan」というチャリティー・プリントを販売、日本赤十字社への寄付を募っている。

Pure Evilは、前にグラフィティの事を書いた時に何度か触れた（参考1・2）、家の近所にある、不動産開発業者Londonnewcastleが持つアート＆パフォーマンス・スペース、Londonnewcastle Depotの壁に、MURDER MILEやうさぎ？のグラフィティを描いている（今は他のグラフィティに取って代わった）。

Pop/gothic graffiti artist, Pure Evil sells a charity print “Hokusai Tsunami print for Japan“, inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e artist Hokusai‘s The Great Wave off Kanagawa, to raise money for the Japanese Red Cross to be distributed directly among the earthquake and tsunami affected Japanese population.

Pure Evil left some graffiti such as MURDER MILE and colorful bunnies (I am not sure the title) on the wall of nearby art & performance space Londonnewcastle Depot, owned by a developer Londonnewcastle, which I mentioned in my past entries (1 / 2). Two of the graffiti are gone now, taken over by the new work just finished recently.

Be Aware of Charity Scammers

数日前、ロンドンのフリーペーパー「Metro」に、東北大地震＆津波への寄付を誘ったサイバー詐欺を行う不埒な輩がいるという記事が載っていた。Internet Crime Complaint Center（インターネット犯罪苦情センター）によると、フィッシングなどサイバー犯罪を目的とした、170万以上のマルウェア、419の詐欺サイト、そして「Japan tsunami」や「Japan earthquake」を使用した50以上のURLが報告されているという（参照：ubergizmo/MacWorld）。詐欺の報告・被害者支援を行うイギリスの公的機関であるAction Fraudのウェブサイトには、イギリス赤十字社のJapan Tsunami Appealを語る詐欺への警告が掲載されている（参照サイト・イギリス赤十字社による警告）。米ABCニュースやロイター通信は、詐欺にあわないための注意事項をリストアップしているが、要は、メールで送られてきたリンクや電話での勧誘からではなく、信頼できる機関や慈善団体の正規のウェブサイトや電話番号を通じて、または直接出向いて寄付するのが一番安全だろう。人の不幸は金儲けのチャンスと、人の善意につけ込む罰当たりな人たちがいるものだ。

I read about cyber criminals who are cashing in on the Japanese earthquake on London’s free paper Metro few days ago (article). According to Internet Crime Complaint Center, fraudsters have setup more than 1.7 million malware pages, 419 scam sites and over 50 fake domains with “Japan tsunami” or “Japan earthquake” in their URLs (ubergizmo/MacWorld). UK’s national fraud reporting service Action Fraud warns British Red Cross’s Japan Tsunami Appeal Scam (Read more about the Japan Tsunami Appeal fraud on the British Red Cross website). ABC news and Reuters list up tips to avoid those scams, but the safest way is to ignore e-mails and phone calls from total strangers, and either to call up or to visit the trustable charities and organizations or donate on their official websites. It is awful that there are a bunch of evils taking advantages from innocent people’s miseries and goodwill to those suffered!
