Autumn Half Term Break (again)

We have a lot of things happening this fall. Therefore, I will take a break from blog, once again this autumn – now I realise that I didn’t notify in advance when I took a break last time in September! I will start writing again from the second week of November (hopefully…) – see you later to all!

A cat hanging around our building. I am not sure if someone’s cat or a loner, but she (he?!) is very friendly.

Gerhard Richter: Panorama @ Tate Modern

We went to see the Tate Modern’s new exhibition “Gerhard Richter: Panorama” (October 6 – January 8, 2012). This major retrospective of the German artist gathers a diverse range of Richter’s works with various techniques and ideas throughout his nearly 50-year of career since 1960s, including realistic paintings based on photographs, colourful and monochrome abstractions such as the squeegee paintings, portraits, landscapes and paintings of historical events, as well as glass constructions, mirrors, drawings and photographs.

Richter has produced many different kinds of works, which are often contradicted each other: monochrome grey works vs. multicoloured abstracts; well exercised and ordered realistic paintings vs. abstracts with unpredictable and free flow of blush strokes; impersonal still-life, impressionistic landscapes and delicate portraits vs. emotion provoking historical subjects such as family portraits under Nazi Germany, ‘mysterious’ deaths of the Baader Meinhof group at the jail, and 9/11 terrorist attacks. I am not a big fan of his colourful abstract paintings, except monochrome ones and color stripes such as this), but I was very moved with his photorealistic paintings with subtlety and tranquil beauty with delicate brush strokes, without screaming out his opinions and emotions. Very impressive, and must-see exhibition of this fall – highly recommended.

London’s biggest art event, Frieze Art Fair 2011 started today (til 16th, Sunday). It houses 173 galleries from 33 countries, showcasing contemporary art works of more than 1,000 artists (see also last year’s blog entry).

Postmodernism: Style and Subversion 1970-1990 @ V&A

Vodpod videos no longer available.

We went to see the V&A‘s new exhibition “Postmodernism: Style and Subversion 1970-1990” (September 24 – January 15, 2012), exploring what postmodernism means and where it came from. Started as a counter reaction against “less is more” stoic modernism architecture, postmodernism idea soon spread to the realm of pop culture such as art, graphics, music and fashions. The exhibition showcases more than 250 objects in a variety of genres to show us what is postmodernism all about.

I lived through the postmodernism era, and the show made me feel a bit nostalgic and sentimental, but at the same time made me realize how terrible the style of the period was! May be the worst time was the mid 1980s, when was the hype of postmodernism. Exaggerated, gaudy, and eccentric. So much freedom and no-holds-barred, in a good way and a bad way, together with an economic boom. But when I look back, in compare to now in deep recession, it was a very good time – full of desires, enthusiasm and hopes.

Jamie Oliver x Young’s “Sustainable” Frozen Fish Range

彼の初の冷凍食品シリーズは現在、fishcake(フィッシュケーキ:魚入りコロッケみたいなもの)5種、fish finger(フィッシュ・フィンガー:マックのフィレオフィッシュの細長い指サイズ版)1種、そしてfish pie(フィッシュ・パイ:パイクラストを使わない、魚入りパイ)3種の計9商品。セールスポイントは、伝統的食材のhaddock(ハドック)やcod(タラ)に変え、 これまであまり利用されていなかったpollock(ポラック)やwhiting(ホワイティング)など、「sustainable(持続可能)」な魚を使用していること。

Here is Jamie, the king of food, again. He is all over the place, from TV program and advert to his spurning restaurants. He will be leaving Sainsbury’s advert with his last appearance for this Christmas, after 11-year partnership with the supermarket chain. But he already found a new partner, Young’s seafood, so you won’t miss him.

Jamie’s frozen fish range, came out in September, have been on offer and I purchased some to try. His first range of branded frozen seafood makes up of 9 products at this moment; 5 fishcakes, 1 fish fingers, and 3 fish pies. The selling point of the range is that those have been sourced from sustainable and under-utilised alternatives to traditional haddock and cod, including pollock and whiting. Goody-goody Jamie who is obsessed with healthy eating, preaching people in UK as well as USA to eat well, is doing another good deed; sustainable and healthy. OK, his ambition is great, but the tastes were rather disappointing. Bland. No flavour, no taste of fish. Small price but small size. To make a good & healthy food for cheap doesn’t seem to be easy, even for mighty Jamie.
