Workshop Coffee Co @ Clerkenwell Road

以前オーストラリアンカフェ・St. Aliがあった場所が「Workshop Coffee Co」という名前に変わっていたので、てっきりSt. Aliがつぶれて、新しいカフェになったと思って行ってみた。St. Aliの時と同じ内装。料理名こそ、へんてこりんな名前から普通になっていたけれど、メニューもあまり変わっていない（→去年のブログ）。？！と思って聞いてみたら、今年4月に名前が変わっただけで同じ店なんだそうだ。なんて紛らわしい。

前回同様、店内はランチタイムも終わった時間帯と言うのに、かなり混んでいる。注文したのは、pulled pork ‘TACOS’（アジア風味のタコス £10.5）とlamb meatballs（ラム肉のミートボール £6.5）。スパイシーなミートボールがトマトソースの甘さと上手くマッチしていて、美味しい。パンがついていないので、bread and oil（£2.5）を追加注文するか聞かれたのだが、注文するほどたくさん食べられないし、中ぐらいの大きさのミートボール3個で£6.5もするんだから、パン一切れぐらいつけてくれてもいいのに、と思う。タコスは味はいいけれど、水分が多く噛むとソースがジョボジョボたれて食べにくく、量も多くない。それ以上に腹立たしかったのは、料理が出て来るまでに30分以上待たされ、食後のコーヒーなどは何と、目でスタッフに催促するまで忘れられていた。味はいいけど、サービス悪すぎ。それにあそこの椅子は、それだけ待たされるには座り心地悪すぎ。

The name of the place where used to be the Australian café St. Ali is changed to “Workshop Coffee Co“. We thought St. Ali failed and new café replaced, so we tried it out. However. when we entered inside, it was the same interior, and the menu was almost the same as before, though strange names of the dishes were altered to normal (→see last year’s blog). We were perplexed so asked the staff, and found out that it is the same café with the same management but just the name has changed this April. How confusing…

As the last time we went, the café was quite busy even at 3pm. My spicy lamb meatballs (£6.5) was delicious as well as fresh tomato sauce, but it came without bread. I was asked if I would want extra bread and oil (£2.5), but I didn’t need it much – they could give one slice of bread, since they charge £6.5 for three medium size meatballs. M’s Asian-inspired pulled pork ‘TACOS’ (£10.5) was decent, but with too much sauce, so every time M bit, the sauce was falling like a waterfall. And the plate was too small for M. More than that, what made us upset was their service – we had to wait over half an hour to get our dishes, and our coffees after meal were forgotten until we finally got an eye contact with the staff in charge. The food may be good, but their service was too slow. Oh, and their chairs were too uncomfortable to wait so long.

The Counter at The Delaunay European Café @ Aldwych

Aldwychに最近オープンしたヨーロピアンカフェ・Counter at the Delaunayは、隣にある、オーストリアやドイツなど中央ヨーロッパにあるクラシックなカフェがコンセプトのレストラン・Delaunayのカジュアル版。Delaunayは、古くは名店・Ivy、2003年開店のWolseleyを成功に導いたレストラングループ・Rex Restaurant Associatesが、近年ZédelとColbertに続いてオープンさせた。

Counter at the Delaunayは、ダークウッドを基調にアールデコ風のインテリアでまとめられ、壁に飾られたフレーム入りの古いポスターがレトロな雰囲気を醸し出していて、ウィーンなどで良く見かけるクラシックなカフェを思わせる。イートイン・テイクアウトともに、ダンプリング入りチキンスープやソルトビーフ（コーンビーフ）・プレッツェルなど、文化が花開いたオーストリア＝ハンガリー帝国の食べ物や、見た目麗しいケーキやアフタヌーン・ティー（午後3時以降）などが、日曜以外毎日夜7時半まで提供されている（メニュー）。New York Beef Hot Dog（£4.50）とChicken soup with dumplings（£3.95）が、私たちのこの日のランチ。共になかなか美味しかったけれど、それ以上に感動したのがケーキ。持ち帰りも含め、Dobos（ドボシュトルタ）、チーズケーキ、ザッハトルテの3種を試したが、どれも日本人好みの繊細な味。美味しいケーキ屋が少ないロンドンでお薦めのお店です。

The Counter at the Delaunay is a new European style café on Aldwych, adjacent to The Delaunay, more upscale Grand European inspired restaurant & café with ambience of Central Europe, such as Austria, Germany and France. The Delaunay is one of the three newly opened restaurants together with Zédel and Colbert in recent years by Rex Restaurant Associates, the founder of Wolseley and Ivy.

The Counter is casual version of the Delaunay, but similarly decorated in art-deco style with dark wood furniture and old posters in frames on the walls, like classic cafés in Vienna. It serves take-out or eat-in Austro-Hungarian influenced food  (menu) throughout the day until 7:30 pm everyday except Sundays, such as chicken soup with dumplings or salt beef pretzels, as well as cakes and afternoon tea (after 3pm). We ordered New York Beef Hot Dog (£4.50) and Chicken soup with dumplings (£3.95). Both were pleasantly decent, but more than their savoury food, I highly recommend their cakes – we had Dobos, cheesecake and Sachertorte, and they are all beautiful to look at & really delicious!

“Renew” Recycle Bins in the Square Mile

「Renew」は、金融街・シティに約100台設置された、LCDスクリーンが両側に備え付けられたリサイクル用ゴミ箱。爆弾の衝撃にも耐えうる構造の、このつや消しの施されたいかついゴミ箱は、なんと1台3万ポンド。ちなみに、80年代にIRAの爆弾テロがロンドンの経済の中心・シティ等にも及んだこと、またアメリカ同時多発テロ事件やロンドン同時爆破事件以降、テロの脅威が増した事もあり、シティ一帯に置かれているRenewも爆弾仕様になっている。このRenewは、ゴミ箱としての機能だけじゃなく、両側のスクリーンには、平日の午前6時〜午後11時59分まで、経済や一般ニュース、天気予報、スポーツ、ファッション、旅行、アート・娯楽関係の情報に加え、チューブ（地下鉄）やNHS等のローカル情報、緊急時には速報、そして広告が随時流されている。→詳細（英語）

1月26日から徐々に設置が始まっていたにも関わらず、今まで全く気づかなかった。スクリーンは低い位置にあるのでちょっと見にくいけれど、信号やバス待ち、友人などとの待ち合わせの際の暇つぶしにいいかも。Renewには現在、ニューヨークやシンガポール、日本からも引き合いが来ているらしい。

‘Renew‘ is a recycling bin with LCD screens on both sides, placed about 100 within Square Mile. This glossy bomb-proof heavy-duty pods costing £30,000, not only swallow recycle materials such as paper, cans and plastic bottles, but also entertain passersby with a variety of information displayed on the screens. Renew transmits between 6am and 23:59pm each market day, and includes breaking financial and corporate news, general news headlines, weather forecasts and other topics including sport, fashion, travel, the arts and entertainment, as well as updates during emergencies and local information such as Tube and NHS, and of course advertisements as well.  →further details

Although being installed initially from January 26, I’ve never noticed Renew. It is a bit too hard to look at the screen as the screen is low, especially for tall men, but it would help you kill your time while waiting at a traffic light, a bus or your friend, in case you forget your smartphone with you. It is said that other cities abroad such as New York, Singapore and Tokyo are interested in the concept of Renew.

Graffiti @ Shoreditch / Brick Lane

バラク・オバマが大統領に当選した2008年選挙キャンペーンで使用され、世界的に有名になった「Hope ポスター」のデザインで知られるアメリカ人グラフィックデザイナー＆アーティスト・Shepard Fairey（シェパード・フェアリー）の作品。ブリック・レーンのOld Truman Brewery内のStolenSpaceギャラリーで、11月4日まで開催中の自身のエキシビジョン「Sound and Vision」に併せて、ショーディッチ・ハイストリートのEbor Streetに描かれた。同時に、Old Truman Brewery近くのCorbet PlaceとBateman’s Rowの２カ所にもグラフィティを残している。この作品は、「路上アートは無料であるべき」との彼の信念を表しているらしい。

American artist Shepard Fairey, whose “Hope” poster for the 2008 Barack Obama election campaign became a global sensation, created this work in Ebor Street, together with two other works in Corbet Place (near the Old Truman Brewery) and Bateman’s Row, to coincide with his exhibition “Sound and Vision” (until Nov 4) at the StolenSpace Gallery in the Old Truman Brewery. This work conveys his belief, “art should be free on the street for the public”.

Although I couldn’t find any information of this graffiti in Ely’s Yard behind Old Truman Brewery, but I believe this is a work by Abdullah Mohammed Alshehri, a Saudi street artist based in Riyadh, depicting Sarah Attar who is the first female track & field athlete covering her hair, representing Saudi Arabia in 2012 London Olympic (reference: the Guardian). Born in the US with American mother and Saudi father, Attar has dual citizenship but wanted to represent Saudi Arabia at the Olympics as a way of inspiring women.

はっきりとした情報は得られなかったけれど、Old Truman Breweryの裏のEly’s Yardにあるこのグラフィティは、恐らくサウジアラビア人ストリートアーティスト・Abdullah Mohammed Alshehriのもの。今年夏に開催されたロンドンオリンピックで、サウジアラビア初の女性陸上選手として、イスラム教の規律に則り髪を覆ったユニフォームでオリンピックスタジアムに登場し、脚光を浴びたSarah Attar選手を描いている（参照：the Guardian）。アメリカ人の母とサウジアラビア人の父のもとにアメリカで生まれた二重国籍者の彼女は、イスラム人女性を勇気づけるため、サウジアラビア代表としてオリンピック出場を望んだという。

上の「Attar」の向かいにある、「Vihls」の愛称で知られるポルトガル人ストリートアーティスト・Alexandre FartoがOrelha Negraとコラボして制作したグラフィティ。Vihlsは、壁の漆喰やコンクリートを少しずつ削っていって作品を創り出す、「Scratching the Surface」シリーズのユニークな作風で知られる（参照：BA Street Art）

ブリック・レーンにも掲げられている（写真。他の場所にもあるかも）、横のでっかい「PLEASE USE TOILETS PROVIDED（ちゃんとトイレで用を足しましょう＝その辺でしないように！）」という注意書き、すごくみっともない。。。

“Scratching the Surface” wall with a man’s face in Dray Walk at the Old Truman Gallery, is made by Alexandre Farto, a Portuguese street artist better known as Vihls, in a collaboration with Orelha Negra. You can see this in front of ‘Attar’ (above) in the same place.Vihls creates his signature works by chipping off tiny bits of plaster and concrete from walls (reference: BA Street Art).

By the way, this big “PLEASE USE TOILETS PROVIDED” signboard was put up also on Brick Lane (photo), and probably somewhere else as well nearby. It is quite embarrassing to see this here and there…

Kahaila Café @ Brick Lane

ブリック・レーンに今年6月末にオープンしたカフェ・Kahaila Café。最初に通りがかった時は、その名前からハワイアン・カフェか何かかな？と思ったけれど、違った。「Kahaila（カヒラと発音）」は、ヘブライ語でコミュニティを意味する語「Kahila」に、同じくヘブライ語「Chaim（生活・生存の意。時にhaiと綴られる）」の「hai」をかけあわせた、オーナーの造語。ヘブライ語が語源でも、ジューイッシュ・カフェでもない。なんと、このカフェのオーナーは、「Life Church」というキリスト教系の教会で、様々な活動やイベントを催す場としてのハイクオリティなカフェを通じて、ブリック・レーン界隈の信者たちが互いに交流できるコミュニティを作る事が目的なのだという。

でも、キリスト教信者じゃなくてもご安心を。カフェには宗教色が一切ないし（実際教会運営のカフェだなんて思いもしなかった）、誰もあなたを改宗しようと近づいてきたりしない。明るくて広くて居心地の良い空間で、ただ座ってリラックスして、ここの美味しいサンドイッチやケーキを楽しんで。

This is Kahaila Café on Brick Lane, opened late June this year. When I passed by in front of it, I thought it was Hawaiian café or something, because of its name. But it’s not. ‘Kahaila (pronounced Ka-hi-la)’ is coined with the hebrew word ‘Kahila (community)’ and another hebrew word ‘Chaim (living or life)’, sometimes spelt ‘hai’ which is placed it in the middle of ‘Kahila’. Is this Jewish café, then? No either. The owner of the café is a unconventional Christian church called Life Church, aiming to to be a missional community that reaches out to the young people who congregate in the area of Brick Lane, through running a high quality cafe that hosts a diverse programme of activities to develop community.

However, don’t worry even if you are a non-church gower, non-Christian or even an atheist – nothing religious in the café (no cross, no Jesus Christ etc) – in fact, I was surprised to know that the place is owned by the church. And nobody bothers to convert you. Just sit down, relax and enjoy delicious good-quality sandwiches and cakes in this friendly & spacious café with cozy and laid-back atmosphere.
