先日テレグラフ紙の記事で、各駅の「味」を網羅したユニークなロンドン地下鉄マップのことを読んだ。このマップの製作者である、ブラックプール在住のJames Wannerton氏は、共感覚と呼ばれる特殊な知覚現象のため、読んだり聞いたりするだけで、その言葉の「味」を感じることが出来るという。彼が、駅特有の「味」に気付いたのは、お母さんと共に、北ロンドンの家から地下鉄で学校に通っていた4歳の頃。以来、ロンドンを離れた後も、時折ロンドンに来ては記録を取り続け、今年初めに、49年もの長きに渡って情熱を傾けてきたこの味覚マップを完成させた。

Wannerton氏は、駅の味や質感は驚くほど一貫していて変わらなかったと言う。それらの味覚は、ソーセージやベーコン、アップルパイ、HPソースなど、大半がイギリスの食べ物や、Wannerton氏が子供時代に慣れ親しんだlove hearts, poppets and jelly totsなどのお菓子だが、中には乾いた血（Pinner駅）、革製ベルト（Northolt駅）、3-in-One Oil（Cannon Street駅とGunnersbury駅）、燃えたマッチ（Holborn駅）といった変わったものも。ちなみに、Wannerton氏の美味しさベスト３駅は、Baker Street（焦げたJam Roly-Poly：ジャム入りロールケーキ）、King’s Cross（フルーツケーキ）、Tottenham Court Road（ソーセージと目玉焼き）で、ワースト３はBond Street（ヘアスプレー）、St Paul’s（芽キャベツ）、Seven Sisters（Spangles：1950年代〜80年代初期まで発売されていた茹で菓子）とのこと。以下は、ロンドンの主な駅の味一覧。

I read an interesting Telegraph article about this unique London Tube map – a map that shows what each station tastes like. The person who made this map, Mr. James Wannerton from Blackpool, can ‘taste’ words when he reads or hears them, due to a neurological condition called synaesthesia. He first noticed each station had a distinct taste when he was four and lived in North London, while traveling to school. Since then he has continued to keep notes and make special trips to London after leaving the city, and he finally completed his 49-year project of the “taste map” of the Tube earlier this year.

Mr. Wannerton said that the tastes and textures of the stations were incredibly consistent and had never changed. Most of the tastes on the map are of British comfort food such as sausages, bacon, apple pie, HP sauce, as well as Mr Wannerton’s childhood treats such as love hearts, poppets and jelly tots. There are also few peculiar flavours such as “dried blood (Pinner)”, “lether belt (Northolt), “3-in-One Oil (Cannon Street and Gunnersbury)”, and “burnt matches (Holborn)”. Mr Wannerton’s three tastiest stops are Baker Street (Burt Jam Roly-Poly), King’s Cross (Fruit Cake & Dripping), Tottenham Court Road (Sausage & Fried Egg), and the three nastiest stops are Bond Street (hair spray), St Paul’s (Sprouts), Seven Sisters (Spangles). Curio Cabal Café @ Kingsland Road, Haggerton

Fabrica 584からキングスランドロードを南下すると、リージェンツ運河の手前に、この夏オープンしたCurio Cabalがある。シンプルでリラックスした雰囲気のこの小さなカフェ＆ギャラリースペース、La Marzoccoで淹れたMonmouth coffeeや美味しい紅茶類、品数は少ないけれどサンドイッチや日替わりスープ、ケーキ等がいただける。取り立てて何もないエリアだけど、万が一にもこの辺でカフェを探すことがあれば、ご参考に。

Going down to the south on Kingsland Road from Fabrica 584, you will see a café just opened this summer, Curio Cabal, in between Haggerston Overground station and the Regents Canal. This relaxed small café & gallery space offers a selection of sweet and savoury bites, as well as Monmouth coffee brewed with La Marzocco and a range of fine teas. It is situated in the middle of nothing, butif you happen to be there and need a decent café, just in case.

Fabrica 584 Café @ Kingsland Road, Dalston

私たちがハックニーに引っ越してきた7年前、キングスランドロードやダルストンは、今とは少し違う様相だった。アフリカ産の野菜やハラールに即した肉類等を売るRidley Road Marketに象徴されるようにアフリカ人やカリブ海出身者が多いこの地区は、現在のような高層アパート群、洒落たお店やレストラン＆カフェは全くなかった。それが2年前にOverground East London線が開通した後は、地価の上がったホクストンやショーディッチに手が出ないイギリス人やヨーロッパ人の若者がじわじわと侵出し始め、彼らをターゲットにした店が増えている。→以前のブログ記事：Tin Café・Bird Café・Other Café

イタリア人が経営するFabrica 584もその一つ。この辺りにありがちな、ヴィンテージの家具やむき出しの壁や柱をそのまま活かした、カジュアルでエッジーな店内は、いかにもイーストロンドンらしい住民で賑わっている。イタリア人が得意とするのはやはり食べ物とコーヒー。ここも例外ではなく、サンドイッチは新鮮で美味しいし、コーヒーも文句なし。

When we moved in Hackney about 7 years ago, Kingsland Road and Dalston used to look quite different from now. There was no fancy apartment complex, stylish stores, hip restaurants/cafés, in this predominantly African and Caribbean neighborhood, represented by the place like Ridley Road Market selling exotic vegetables and Halal meat. Since London Overground East London line opened two years ago, young British and Europeans who can’t afford to live Hoxton and Shoreditch have gradually invaded this area, so as restaurants and cafés targeting those people. Tin Café, Bird Café, Other Café are some of them I wrote previously.

Italian-own Fabrica 584 café is another one of those. As other fellow cafés, the interior is rough, bare and edgy, and atmosphere is laid-back. What Italians are generally better than British at is food and coffee, and Fabrica 584 is not an exception. Their sandwiches were fresh and delicious, and my flat white was exactly the way I wanted (though flat white is not Italian invention).

“Art Everywhere” Public Art Event

Art Everywhereは、一般投票で選ばれたイギリスのアート作品57点のポスター22,000枚を、イギリス全土の屋外広告やバス停などに「展示」する、公共アートイベント。期間は8月12日から25日までと、残念ながら終わってしまったのだが、まだ取り外されていないポスターもあるかもしれない。イギリスの成人90％がポスターを見ると試算。資金£30,000はテートやThe Art Fund、人々からの寄付でまかなわれ、ポスターをはる場所は広告業界から提供された（詳細）。ウィリアム・ホガース、ジョン・エヴァレット・ミレー、ジョゼフ・マロード・ウィリアム・ターナー、ジェームズ・マクニール・ホイッスラー、フランシス・ベーコン、デイヴィッド・ホックニー、ピーター・ドイグ、ギャリー・ヒューム、ダミアン・ハースト、マーティン・クリードなど、古典からコンテンポラリーまで、イギリスが誇るアーティストの作品が街を彩った。

ポスターは文字通りeverywhere、そこかしこにあり、多くの人が見たとは思うが、どれぐらいの人がこのイベントのことを知っていたか疑問。私はBBCニュースでちらっと見たけれど告知も少なく、周りでこれらのポスターのことを話題にした人はいなかったし、ポスターにもイベントの詳細は書かれていない。コンセプトは面白いが、イベントが周知されていなければ人々も気にとめないだろうし、せっかく作った大量のポスターが勿体ない、とちょっと思う。

Art Everywhere is public art event, showcasing 57 British artworks selected through a public vote on 22,000 billboards, bus stops and other sites across the UK. Unfortunately it had been running from August 12–25 and now it’s over, but you may be able to spot some of them still not removed. It was estimated that 90% of the UK’s adult population would see the posters. Cost of the event £30,000 was funded by Tate, The Art Fund and a public funding campaign, and advertising industry had donated poster sites (more details). The list of artists are varied from young to old and from classic to contemporary, including William Hogarth, John Everett Millais, J. M. W. Turner, James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Francis Bacon, Peter Blake, David Hockney, Peter Doig, Michael Craig-Martin, Gary Hume, Damien Hirst, and Martin Creed (full list).

The posters were everywhere, literally. I am sure many people had seen some of those posters as well, but the I am not sure how many of them had known about the event and why the posters were there. I haven’t met anyone talking about it and there was no details about the event written on a poster, as you can see. The concept is interesting, but it is a bit of a waste if people don’t notice it.

Tonic Coffee Bar @ Sherwood Street, Piccadilly Circus

Tonic Coffee Barは、ピカデリー・サーカスの裏道に最近出来た、ちっちゃなカフェ。でも規模は小さくても、SpeakeasyやDepartment of Coffee and Social Affairs等と同じく、コーヒーにこだわりを持つロンドンのコーヒー店のネットワークであるCoffee Collectiveの一員だ。

そのこだわりのコーヒーの他に、種類は多くないけれどケーキやペイストリー等もある。カウンター席が3つしかないので、友人とのおしゃべりには不向きだけれど、イタリア人が行きつけのバール（＝イタリアでいうカフェ）でするように、カフェインを補充のため、さっと来てさっと飲んで帰るのがベスト。

Tonic Coffee Bar is a tiny, tiny café, appeared recently on a back street of Piccadilly Circus. It is really small, but it is a proud member of Coffee Collective, a network of quality coffee shops in London, together with Speakeasy and Department of Coffee and Social Affairs.

They serve artisan coffee as well as small tableful of cakes and pastries. Tonic has only 3 counter stools for eat-in, so it is not the perfect place for chit-chat with your friends. Just pop in and have a quick shot, as Italians do at their favourite ‘bar‘ (=equivalent to a café in Italy).
