Westfield Stratford City

オリンピックのシンクロデュエット決勝を見に行った帰り、オリンピックパーク横にある、昨年9月オープンのヨーロッパ最大のショッピングモール・Westfield Stratford Cityに立ち寄った（過去エントリー参照）。オリンピック開催中だけあって、人混みがすごい。でも、観客がオリンピックにお金を使い過ぎて財布のひもを締めているせいか不況のせいか、各店舗内は意外と空いている。買い物は我慢できても空腹は我慢できないのか、フードコートはさすがに席の奪い合い状態。ショップはありきたりのチェーン店が多いけれど、フードコートは、マクドナルドやスターバックスと言った大型チェーンだけでなく、世界各国の料理を取り揃え、Rosa’sやComptoir Libanaisなどの人気店も入居している。

結局この日は観戦疲れ・人疲れして全部見れなかったので、パラリンピック終了後、人気の少ない平日に一度ゆっくり見て回りたい。

I stopped by at the Europe’s biggest shopping center, Westfield Stratford City (see past entry), after attending the synchronized swimming duet final during the Olympics. There was a lot of people, but inside of the stores was rather empty, probably due to the recession or visitors trying to save money after spending a lot for visiting the Olympics. However, there was a war over empty seats here and there at its food court, as people cannot live without eating. The majority of shops at Westfield were boring chains, but it’s worth trying their food court where you can eat wide range of western and ethnic food at London’s popular eateries such as Rosa’s and Comptoir Libanais, not only at mega chains like McDonald’s and Starbucks.

I couldn’t fully enjoy the mall because I was exhausted from watching the game and the large crowd, but I will try again when is less busy during weekdays after the Paralympics.

‘The New Logo for the Hackney Looting Team’ Graffiti by Pure Evil @ Broadway Market

ハックニーのBroadway Market（ブロードウェイ・マーケット）の街角で、Pure Evilが描いた「The New Logo for the Hackney Looting Team（ハックニー略奪チームの新しいロゴ）」を見つけた。昨年ロンドンで起こった暴動とオリンピックがモチーフのこの作品は、Pure Evilいわく、オリンピックはVIPたちがエンジョイできるパーティのようなもので、自分たちは蚊帳の外でお呼びじゃないという、ハックニー住民の失望感を表しているという。

その気持ちは分からなくはない。オリンピックのチケットは高額だし、ロンドンの中心街やオリンピック会場は五輪で盛り上がってるけれども、貧困層の住むイーストロンドンを含むその他のエリアは別世界。オリンピックのロゴも国旗も滅多に見かけなかったし、パブでもオリンピック中継はあまりやっておらず、街が分断されているかのように感じたのは本当だ。

私個人の感想を言わせてもらえば、オリンピックは思った以上に面白かった。こんなに短期集中的にスポーツを見たことは人生初めてだし、世界的イベントがロンドンで行われた時にここにいられて実際観戦できて、本当に良かったと思う。ただし、BBCのオリンピック中継には少し物申したい。The Telegraph紙でも伝えているように、ともかくイギリス人選手のことばっかりで、ホスト国だと言うのにイギリス人選手が出ていない試合やマイナーなスポーツはほとんど無視、その日行われた全試合の結果を伝えるダイジェストさえなし。私たちはケーブルテレビに加入しているので、BBCの五輪特別チャンネルでほとんどの試合を生で見れたのだが、同じ時間に試合が重なると、当然のようにイギリス人やヨーロッパ人の選手が出る試合が優先される。柔道や卓球など、ワクワクして試合が始まるのを待っていたのに、全然違う国の選手の試合を見せられて失望したことも何度か。仕方ないことだが、せめてスクリーンを分割するとか小さな囲みを入れるとかして、他の試合も見せて欲しかった。ケーブルテレビに加入していない友人などは、現地にいるにも関わらず、早々にテレビ観戦は諦めてネットのニュースで結果をチェックしていたそう。日本のテレビも日本人のことばかりだけれど、ロンドンは何と言ってもホストシティ、しかも住民の半数が外国生まれで国際都市を謳っている割に、この有様。外国人だって、TV license（受信料）払ってるのに。。。オリンピック開始前には文句ばっかり言って冷めてたイギリス人が、こんなに熱狂的で愛国心満々になるなんて、思いもしなかった。

I found this graffiti, ‘The New Logo for the Hackney Looting Team‘ painted by Pure Evil at the corner of Broadway Market in the heart of Hackney. Pure Evil explained the message behind it is a disenfranchisement that people in Hackney felt about the Olympics, which they thought it had been a bit of a party for the VIPs and they hadn’t been invited and included.

It may be a bit true. The Olympic tickets were quite expensive, and I felt the Olympic atmosphere around the Game venues and downtown London, but it seemed nothing was happening in some areas including deprived neighborhood in East London – very few olympic symbols or national flags, and little olympic viewing at a local pub. I felt like the city was divided somehow.

Overall I really enjoyed the Olympic myself. I am glad that I was here when this great event took place in London. But I and my non-British friends had a little problem with BBC Olympic coverage. They constantly and repeatedly talked about British athletes, but almost no coverage for the non-popular games that British athletes were not expected for medals (The Telegraph). We have a cable TV, showing most of the games live, but if multiple games of the same sport taking place at the same time, the coverage gave a priority to British and European athletes. Of course they should mainly cover British olympians, as BBC is the British TV station, but they didn’t even do few minutes of digest for all the games of the day. UK is the host country and I believe they have some responsibility to broadcast wide variety of the games not only for British but also for both foreign visitors and residents. I was here in front of the TV at home many times, but I sometimes got disappointed by watching the game I did care less. They could split the screen or could insert a small screen at the corner of main screen to show other games as well! Situation for some of my friends who don’t have cable TV was even worse – they just gave up watching TV and checked internet for a result and news. I thought London is the cosmopolitan city that half of the residents are foreign-born… We foreigners also pay for TV license! British people were rather unenthsiastic before the Olympic started, but I was surprised that they turned to be very fanatic and patriotic at the end (The Time blog).

チャイナタウンで見つけたこの中国人のオジサンは、何とこの人力車で中国からロンドンにやってきたそう（BBCニュース）。北京オリンピックを見て感銘を受け、次の開催地であるロンドンを目指すことを決意、2020年5月23日に中国の自宅を出発してから、16カ国1764市を通る、14万キロ以上の道程をやってきた。彼曰く、平和と環境保護というメッセージを世界に伝え続けたいと、次は2016年オリンピック開催地であるリオデジャネイロに向かう予定だそう。こんな人力車でよく頑張った。ご苦労様！

On the main street of China Town, I happened to see this Chinese man who traveled from China to London with his rickshaw (BBC news). He was inspired to travel to the next host city for the Games, while he saw the Olympic in Beijing, and he has travelled more than 90,000km through 16 countries and 1,764 cities since he left his home in China on May 23, 2010. He says he wants to carry on spreading his message of peace and environmental protection, and next he is going to head to Brazil for Rio 2016. Great job, and good luck to you!

2012 Olympic National Hospitality Houses: Czech House @ Business Design Centre, Islington

五輪期間中、ビジターに自国の歴史や文化を紹介したり、自国の選手たちをサポートする、約30の「Olympic National Hospitality Houses（ホスピタリティー・ハウス）」が、ロンドン各地にオープン。欧米諸国や日本、韓国、ブラジル、ジャマイカ、ケニア、ナイジェリア、ニュージーランド、2022年ワールドカップのホスト国・カタール、そしてアフリカ53カ国共同のAfrica Village等、イベントやパブリック・ビューイング等で来客をもてなした。Africa Villageが資金難のために早期閉館したり（BBC）、ニュージーランドのKiwi HouseがBBQで火事騒動を起こしたり（The Telegraph）とトラブルもあったが、全体的には好評だったようだ。2020年東京オリンピック招致活動が目的のジャパンハウスは、入館がIOC関係者かJapan Society会員、日本人駐在員に限定されていたのが残念。震災・津波で激減した観光客を呼び戻す格好の機会だったのに。各ハウスを紹介するLondon Townウェブサイトで、ちょっと皮肉っぽい書かれ方をしていたのも当然かも。一般在留日本人はだめで駐在員だけオーケーだったのも不公平だし、オリンピック誘致という目的を考えても意味不明。

せっかくなので色々行きたかったのだけれど、結局、家から近い、エンジェルのBusiness Design CentreでやっていたCzech House（チェコ・ハウス）のみで終わってしまった。ほとんどのホスピタリティハウスはオリンピック閉会と同時に終了してしまったけれど、次回オリンピック開催国ブラジルのCasa Brasilは9月8日までやっているなので、行く機会があればまた報告します。

There were about 30 “Olympic National Hospitality Houses” opened around London during the Olympics to promote their countries and cultures as well as support their athletes. Many European countries as long with New Zealand, Brazil, Jamaica, Japan, Korea, Kenya, Nigeria, and Qatar who hosts 2020 World Cup had offered an array of events and activities for visitors. 53 African countries teamed together to  put on a Africa Village in Hyde Park, though it was forced to prematurely close due to debts outstanding (BBC). Another trouble was NZ’s Kiwi House got a fire incident caused by BBQ (The Telegraph), but overall, those hospitality houses added extra fun to the Games. Japan House was set up to promote Tokyo 2020 and an entry to the house was limited to IOC members and VIP, as well as Japan Society members and Japanese expats (I don’t understand what was to do with expats and Tokyo Olympic bid), and I agree with London Town website‘s sarcastic description about it. They should have also promoted tourism to Japan, which was largely affected by Japan earthquake and Tsunami! To me it is also unfair that only expats could come in but not other Japanese.

I wanted to try out as many hospitality houses, but we went only one, nearby Czech House at Business Design Centre in Angel. Although most of the hospitality houses have now closed, but next Olympic host country Casa Brasil at Somerset House is still open until September 8, and I will talk about it if I have a chance to go.

入場は£5だが、好意で無料で入れてもらう。入口を入ると、すぐ右がバスケットボール・コート、左手はチェコのオリンピックユニフォーム等を売るショップ。メイン会場を見下ろす3階には観光案内やメディアルーム、チェコの料理が味わえる食堂がある。チェコ・ハウスが人気だった大きな理由は、手に入りにくいオリンピックのチケットも、チェコのオリンピック委員会が割当分をここで売っていたこと。徹夜で並んで買う人も（イブニング・スタンダード紙）。

Entrance fee to Czech House is £5, though we got in for free with a favor from the house. After the entrance to the right was a basket ball court and on the left was a shop selling Olympic Czech national uniforms and accessories. There were canteen offered Czech food as well as tourist bureau and media room upstairs, surrounded the main area. Czech house was popular because hard-to-get Olympic tickets allocated to Czech Olympic committee were sold there (Evening Standard).

近未来的なデザインのメイン会場。チェコ人アーティストのエキシビションやコンサート、パブリックビューイングが行われた。チェコの国旗の赤・白・青のコスチュームに身を包んだ綺麗なお姉さんたちが、男性たちに人気。

Main space with futuristic design, celebrating with the athletes, panoramic projection, music, and exhibitions. Pretty young ladies in tricolore costumes, inspired by Czech national flag were popular among male visitors.

チェコハウス前に設置された、チェコ人アーティスト・David Černý（ダヴィッド・チェルニー）が製作した「London Booster」。ロンドン名物・ルートマスターが腕立て伏せをするというユニークなコンセプトと外観で、かなり話題を呼んだ。本人曰く、この作品は、オリンピックに訪れた「太ったアメリカ人」にエクササイズを奨励するためのものだそうだが、イギリスをはじめとするヨーロッパでも肥満が問題となってるので、アメリカ人のみをターゲットとするのはどうかと思うが。

Olympic Synchronised Swimming Women’s Duet Final @ Aquatics Centre, Olympic Park

初めてのオリンピック・パーク体験！期間中に、ロンドン東部のストラトフォード・シティにあるメインのオリンピック会場を見たいがために、£120するシンクロのデュエット決勝のチケットを買った。

My first time at Olympic Park in Stratford City! I bought a ticket for synchronised swimming women’s duet final for £120, just to see the Olympic Park during the Games.

決勝に進出した12組のペア。観客席はかなり急で、見上げるとかなり怖い。下の方の席で良かった。でも最高Aクラスの割に（このクラスのチケットしか残っていなかった）ポジションが良くなくて残念。

Twelve pairs who went through to the final. The audience seats was very steep and bit scary to look up – thank god my seat was on a lower row. I was a bit disappointed by the position which is quite angular despite of its most expensive A class price (only this class was available).

自転車競技施設・Velopark（ヴェロパーク）。自転車競技は、ボートと並びイギリスのお家芸で、計9個（金7・銀1・銅1）のメダルを獲得した。

Olympic Women’s Football Semi Final & Final @ Wembley Stadium

ロンドン・オリンピックが終わってしまった。イギリスの誇る歴代の大物歌手たちが登場した昨夜の閉会式は、ミュージック・フェスティバルか、日本で言うと紅白歌合戦特別版といった趣の、スポーツとはあまり関係のない演出だったけれど、懐メロから最新ヒット曲まで一挙に聞けて、イギリス人はかなり盛り上がったようだ。私達はというと、好みじゃない音楽を3時間も聞かされ飽き飽きしてしまったけれど。

期間中はテレビ、アプリ、ウェブを駆使してつぶさに結果をチェックしていたので、オリンピックが終わった今、大きな空虚感を感じる。一介の観客でさえそうなのだから、参加選手たちが燃え尽き症候群に陥ってしまう気持ちがよく分かる。

London Olympic is over. Last night’s closing ceremony was nothing much to do with sports but more like Diamond Jubilee Concert, but British seem to have fascinated to watch generations of big names singing old classics to latest hits, though we got a bit bored listening to the music I’d never heard and in fact those musics were not my cup of tea. Also I didn’t understand “Monty Python” part as I’ve never seen it, and I believe I am not the only one in the world.

I was into following the olympic games everyday on TV, web and Olympic apps, and now I feel empty. I am just an audience, but I completely understand some Olympic athletes experience burn-out syndrome after the Games.

時間は逆のぼるが、日本全国の期待を集めたなでしこが、プレッシャーにも負けず大活躍、決勝まで勝ち上がった。まだどのチームが勝ち上がるかも分からない次点で、願掛けも兼ねて買っておいたウェンブリー・スタジアムでの準決勝・決勝戦のチケットが無駄にならなかった。ちなみに準決勝のチケット代は最高Aクラスで1枚60ポンド、決勝は最高Aクラスで1枚125ポンド也。

This is retrospective story, but I want to share my experience in women’s football semi-final and final at London’s Wembley Stadium, after the quarter final in Cardiff. I bought those tickets before knowing who would play, hoping that Japanese team (aka Nadeshiko Japan) would go through. Since the historic victory against USA at last year’s Women’s World Cup, Nadeshiko Japan had been burdened with so much expectation and pressure from Japanese people (like Jessica Ennis for British), and they met their expectation. My tickets were not wasted after all – I paid £60 for semi-final and £125 for final for both A class tickets, and it was well worth it!

キャパシティ9万人でヨーロッパ第二位の大きさを誇り、サッカーの聖地とも呼ばれるウェンブリー・スタジアムでの準決勝の相手はフランス。ウェンブリー・パーク駅から続々と観客が集まってくる。

The semi-final was Japan vs France at the Europe’s second biggest Wembley Stadium with massive 90,000 capacity. People after people were coming toward the stadium from nearby Wembley Park station.

入口では、男女別にセキュリティチェックがある。通常、サッカーの試合は男性が多いのだけれど、さすがに女子サッカーなので女性が多数派。15分ほど並んでようやく通過。

There were separate search lanes for men and women. Normally majority of the football audience is men, but this time there were more women than men. I took about 15 minutes to go through the gate.

両国の国家斉唱。夕方5時スタートと時間が早いせいか、左右ゴール裏はほぼ空席、東京オリンピック誘致の垂れ幕がちゃっかり陣取る。奥のサイド席も空席が目立つ。

The time for national anthems of both countries before the game. Big chunk of seats were unoccupied, probably because the game started at 5pm and not many 9-5 working people couldn’t attend. You can see a banner “Tokyo 2020“, hold up by Japanese Olympic Committee gangs?

この日の観客数はなんと6万1482人。

Attendance of the match was 62,482. Wow!

最後はフランスの猛反撃にさらされながらも、2対1でなでしこが勝利。決勝進出を決める。

Nadeshiko Japan won 2-1, despite of fierce attack by France on the second half. Well done, girls!

いよいよ決勝戦。夜7時45分スタートで会社帰りの人も来られることもあり、準決勝より混雑している。

The final started at 19:45 and there were much more people coming than the semi final.

アメリカ国旗に身を包み、勝つ気満々のアメリカ人が目立つ。日本人サポーター、ちょっと気迫負け。。。

Americans, wrapped themselves with Stars and Stripes, were all pumped up and cheering everywhere, while Japanese supporters were quieter and less visible…

準決勝時と比べ、高級感漂うClub Wembleyレベル2。シャンパン・バーや座席サービスのレストランも。観覧席もクッション付きで、座り心地もベター。

In compared to Level 1 at the semi-final, Club Wembley level 2 area was more upscale, with a table service restaurant and a champaign bar. The padded seat here was more comfortable than Level 1 seat.

観客がパネルを掲げて「London 2012」を表示。昨年W杯来の日米因縁の対決とあって、女子サッカーとしては過去最高の観客数8万203人を記録。私の日本人の知り合いの80％（主観ですが）が来場、総数5万人と言われる在英日本人が勢揃いしたかと思うほど、多くの日本人が観戦した。

Audience put up the panels to show “London 2012”. The attendance of the match was massive 80,203, the record highest as a women’s football match. About 80% of my Japanese friends got the tickets, and there were so many Japanese in the stadium as if all 50,000 Japanese who live in UK came to the stadium.

2−0と先行され、健闘虚しく2−1で敗れる。試合後、アメリカのカーリ・ロイド選手さえ「アメリカがペナルティを取られなかったのはとてもラッキーだった」と認めているように、レフェリーがペナルティエリアでのアメリカ側のハンドを取らなかったことが悔しい。結果は同じだったとしても、勝利のチャンスはあったかもしれないと言うのが、ファンの正直な思い。アメリカは準決勝のカナダ戦でも、3−2でリードされている時に、カナダのゴールキーパーがボールを規定時間以上持っていたとしてフリーキックを与えられたり、カナダ側のハンドとして賛否両論のペナルティキックが与えられたりして、延長戦で勝利した（英語版Wikipedia）。なんとラッキーな（ちょっと嫌み）！でも、どうせ判定は変わらないのだし、カナダ選手達のようにはっきり文句を言うのではなく（このことでFIFAより懲罰を受けるかも）、レフェリーの判断を尊重したなでしこは賢明か。

表彰式では、人種差別容認発言やFIFA理事の不正疑惑で悪評高いFIFAのゼップ・ブラッター会長に大きなブーイング。そもそもこの日のことも、ゴール判定技術やビデオ判定などに消極的なFIFAの責任なのだ。ブーイングも当然。

Nadeshiko Japan lost 2-1, despite of their continuous attacks during the game. As a Japanese supporter, I was quite upset that the German referee didn’t give a penalty to USA for the handball in the penalty area made by Tobin Heath, although it might haven’t affected the result. In fact, replays showed a clear handball, and even Carli Lloyd admitted  in post-match interviews that the USA were very lucky to go unpenalized. There was also another controversy about what happened during the semi-final, favouring to US against Canada. Lucky you, Americans! (see details on Wikipedia) But Japanese players were wiser just accept the referee’s judgement, in compare to Canadians who raised their doubts against referee, which risk them a disciplinary action by FIFA. And at the end, the result won’t change anyway. But I feel very sorry for Canadians.

There was big booing against unpopular president of FIFA, Sepp Blatter who attended the medal ceremony. At the end of the day, everything is FIFA’s fault refusing to introduce technological assistance such as  goal-line technology or video replays to avoid misjudgement, for some strange reasons.

試合直後は涙に暮れた彼女たちも、表彰式では晴れ晴れとした素敵な笑顔。スコア上では負けたけれど、試合内容は互角かそれ以上。強い団結力と勝利への思い、小さい体でデッカいアメリカ人選手たちと戦う姿は、見る者皆に勇気と感動を与えてくれた。最高のオリンピック経験をさせてくれてありがとう！

After lots of tears, the girls showed us great smiles at the medal ceremony. Although they lost, the game was neck and neck or they played even better, for my eyes. Great teamwork and determination. Small Japanese players who played with big Americans gave all Japanese the courage and power. Thank you for such a wonderful Olympic experience to us!!

。。。とここまでは良かったけれど、準決勝も決勝も、試合の後が悪夢。何万人と言う人波が最寄りのWembley Park（ウェンブリー・パーク）駅に押し寄せ、身動きできない。しかも準決勝の日は、信号機の異常かなんかで（よくあることだが）メトロポリタン線に遅れが出た。駅への沿道はフェンスでブロックされているので、列を抜け出すことも出来ない。決勝戦の後、通常45分ほどの道程を、2時間かけて夜1時にやっと家に帰り着いた。楽しかったけれど、疲れた。。。

But this is not the end of the story – coming back home was a true nightmare for both days. Tens of thousands of people rushing to the station stuck and couldn’t move for a while. Metropolitan line had problem of signal failure after the semi final, which often happens here in London. The path to the station was blocked on the sides and couldn’t escape once you went inside. It took two hours to go back home after the final which normally takes only 45-minutes, and it was 1 am when I finally reached home. The game was exciting, but it was exhausting as well…
