先日テレグラフ紙の記事で、各駅の「味」を網羅したユニークなロンドン地下鉄マップのことを読んだ。このマップの製作者である、ブラックプール在住のJames Wannerton氏は、共感覚と呼ばれる特殊な知覚現象のため、読んだり聞いたりするだけで、その言葉の「味」を感じることが出来るという。彼が、駅特有の「味」に気付いたのは、お母さんと共に、北ロンドンの家から地下鉄で学校に通っていた4歳の頃。以来、ロンドンを離れた後も、時折ロンドンに来ては記録を取り続け、今年初めに、49年もの長きに渡って情熱を傾けてきたこの味覚マップを完成させた。

Wannerton氏は、駅の味や質感は驚くほど一貫していて変わらなかったと言う。それらの味覚は、ソーセージやベーコン、アップルパイ、HPソースなど、大半がイギリスの食べ物や、Wannerton氏が子供時代に慣れ親しんだlove hearts, poppets and jelly totsなどのお菓子だが、中には乾いた血（Pinner駅）、革製ベルト（Northolt駅）、3-in-One Oil（Cannon Street駅とGunnersbury駅）、燃えたマッチ（Holborn駅）といった変わったものも。ちなみに、Wannerton氏の美味しさベスト３駅は、Baker Street（焦げたJam Roly-Poly：ジャム入りロールケーキ）、King’s Cross（フルーツケーキ）、Tottenham Court Road（ソーセージと目玉焼き）で、ワースト３はBond Street（ヘアスプレー）、St Paul’s（芽キャベツ）、Seven Sisters（Spangles：1950年代〜80年代初期まで発売されていた茹で菓子）とのこと。以下は、ロンドンの主な駅の味一覧。

I read an interesting Telegraph article about this unique London Tube map – a map that shows what each station tastes like. The person who made this map, Mr. James Wannerton from Blackpool, can ‘taste’ words when he reads or hears them, due to a neurological condition called synaesthesia. He first noticed each station had a distinct taste when he was four and lived in North London, while traveling to school. Since then he has continued to keep notes and make special trips to London after leaving the city, and he finally completed his 49-year project of the “taste map” of the Tube earlier this year.

Mr. Wannerton said that the tastes and textures of the stations were incredibly consistent and had never changed. Most of the tastes on the map are of British comfort food such as sausages, bacon, apple pie, HP sauce, as well as Mr Wannerton’s childhood treats such as love hearts, poppets and jelly tots. There are also few peculiar flavours such as “dried blood (Pinner)”, “lether belt (Northolt), “3-in-One Oil (Cannon Street and Gunnersbury)”, and “burnt matches (Holborn)”. Mr Wannerton’s three tastiest stops are Baker Street (Burt Jam Roly-Poly), King’s Cross (Fruit Cake & Dripping), Tottenham Court Road (Sausage & Fried Egg), and the three nastiest stops are Bond Street (hair spray), St Paul’s (Sprouts), Seven Sisters (Spangles). Regent’s Canal

Grain Storeでのランチの後、お天気も良かったので、 Granary Squareに面した入口からRegent’s Canal（リージェンツ運河）に入り、食後の散歩を楽しむ。

産業革命時に造られたこの運河は、イングランド北部の主要産業都市とロンドンを結び、1960年代まで140年以上に渡って、石炭や物資、建設資材などの運搬という重要な役目を果たしてきた。その役割を終えた今、運河沿いの小道（トウパス→過去の記事参照）は、ロンドンの住人が天気のいい日に散歩やサイクリングを楽しむルートとして人気だ。ロンドン北部を東西に縦断する全長13.8kmのこの運河は、西はパディントン駅の北西に位置するGrand Union Canal（バーミンガムとロンドンのテムズ川を繋ぐグランウンド・ユニオン運河）から、東はテムズ川に通じるLimehouse Basinを結ぶ（途中、Islington Tunnelで中断）。運河沿いには、西より、カラフルなナロウボートが並ぶMaida ValeのLittle Venice、リージェンツ・パーク、ロンドン動物園、セレブが多く住むお洒落なプリムローズ・ヒル、古着や個性的な商品を売るカムデンマーケット、ナイトクラブやバーが多い夜遊びの街・ホクストン、お洒落なレストランやカフェが並ぶ最近人気上昇のBroadway Market（ブロードウェィ・マーケット）、Victoria Parkなど、様々な見所が目白押し（詳細：Visit London）。

リージェンツ運河のそばに住んでいる事もあり、運河沿いを歩くのは好きなのだが、最近はあまり行かない。というのは、通勤に自転車を使う人も多く、べルをうるさいほどチリンチリン鳴らして歩行者をどかしたり、もの凄いスピードで通り抜けていく自転車もいて、心安らかな散歩がままならないからだ。道幅が狭いこのトウパス、自転車の利用を禁止してくれたら嬉しいのだけれど。

Built during the Industrial Revolution, Regent’s Canal played an important part in trade and brought coal, goods and building materials between London and the major industrial cities in the North of England, for over 14o years until the 1960s. Now the towpath (see my past post) on Regent’s Canal is one of the favourite route for Londoners for walk or cycling, especially when it is a nice day. The canal is 13.8 km (8.6 miles) long and runs through north London, connecting chic north-west to hip east end, from the Grand Union Canal, north-west of Paddington Basin, to the Limehouse Basin and the River Thames (interrupted small piece at Islington Tunnel). It offers a variety of attractions such as Little Venice in Maida Vale, Regent’s Park,  London Zoo, Primrose Hill, Camden Town, Hoxton, Broadway Market, Victoria Park, and more. I live nearby Regent’s Canal and like to walk the towpath, but I rarely do so because of annoying cyclists who disturb a peaceful moment, especially in the evening – ringing a bell like a fanatic to kick out pedestrians from their way and dangerously going very fast, as some people cycle to commute. But the towpath is not wide enough for both pedestrians and cyclists side by side, and I wish London would ban cyclists to use it…

Brazilian’s Demonstration @ Trafalgar Square

6月初旬、公共交通料金値上げに端を発し、全土に広がったブラジルのデモ（詳細）、2週間以上経った今でも、汚職撲滅、公共サービスの向上、お金のかかりすぎるW杯反対など、社会のあらゆる不満が噴出し、収まる気配を見せない。

先週17日、たまたまトラファルガー広場を通りかかったら、叫び声や音楽やら何やら騒がしいので、野次馬根性で見に行ってみたら、ブラジルの国旗だらけ。最初コンフェデ杯の応援かと思ったら、どうやら母国のデモに呼応し、ロンドンでも抗議に集まったようだ。でも、ラテン気質のブラジル人、本人たちはいたって真剣なんだろうけど、笑顔で記念撮影したりお喋りに花を咲かせたり、イギリスの真面目顔の参加者がひたすら叫ぶデモと違い、どこか楽しそう。ブラジルに行ったことがないので、これほどの人数のブラジル人が勢ぞろいするのを見るのは初めて。ちなみにWikipediaによると、2007年の統計ではロンドンには違法合法合わせて13〜16万人以上のブラジル人が住んでおり、主に清掃業、ホテル、宅配便やデリバリー、建設業に従事しているそうだ。

Public demonstrations in Brazil has spread nationwide and has no sign of cooling down after over two weeks (wikipedia). Initially organized to protest increases in bus, train, and metro ticket prices in early June, but came to include other subjects such as corruption, crimes, poor public service such as education and public health, and high-priced World Cup and Olympics.

When we were around Trafalgar Square on 17th last Monday, we heard shouts and musics nearby. So we came closer to the noise, and found lots of Brazilian flags. At the beginning I thought Brazilian football fans gathered to watch the Confederations Cup game, then realised that this was a demonstration to support the protests in their home country. In compare to British demonstrations with serious looking protesters screaming and showing out angrily, Brazilian counterparts looked rather happy and enjoyed taking photos and chatting with their friends. I’ve never been to Brazil and never seen so many Brazilians together in one place! According to Wikipedia, community groups estimated in 2007 that between 130,000 and 160,000 Brazilians were likely to be living in London (I guess including both legally and illegally), and their most common jobs were involved in the cleaning industry, hotel work and catering, other services, couriers, and theconstruction industry.

 

One Sunny Day in Greenwich

5月も終わり近いというのに季節が逆行、寒くて曇り空ばかりの日が続くロンドン。ちょっと古い話になるけれど、春らしい日が続いた約2週間前のある日、ロンドン南東部のグリニッジに足を伸ばした。グリニッジ平均時の基準都市として名前は知っていたけれど、長年ロンドンに住んでいるにも関わらず、この世界遺産となっている街に行ったのは恥ずかしながらこれが初めて。あいにく午後遅く着いたので、有名なグリニッジ天文台やカティーサーク号等中には入れず、周囲の散策だけで終わってしまった（恥）。見所全て説明すると長ったらしくなるので、詳細はリンクをクリックして、Wikipediaを参照してください。

It is almost the end of May, but it has been cold and cloudy in London these days. Where is the spring sun?! About two weeks ago, the city had experienced brief moment of sun and warm days, so we went to Greenwich, South East London. I know the name of the town since I studied Greenwich Mean Time at school, but we’d never been there during all these years of living in London, and incredibly this was the first time for us to visit this World Heritage Site (I know it’s a shame). Unfortunately we couldn’t go inside of the historical monuments such as Cutty Sark and Royal Observatory, as we arrived late afternoon, but just walked around the Greenwich Park. Cutty Sark, a British tea clipper ship that carried tea from China to UK. The ship was badly damaged by fire in 2007 while undergoing conservation, but the vessel has been restored and was reopened to the public in April 2012.

グリニッジ子午線（経度0度）における平均太陽時（mean solar time）を指すグリニッジ平均時を定めたグリニッジ天文台。1990年にケンブリッジに観測機関が移転した後は、National Maritime Museum（国立海事博物館）の一部として、天文観測や航海用具などを展示している。

City of London Community Toilet Scheme

ふと見たカフェに貼ってあったこのステッカー。何だろうと思って調べてみたら、これはシティ・オブ・ロンドンのCommunity Toilet Scheme (CTS)の一環で、域内の参加店が店内のトイレを一般に開放する代わりに、シティが「contribution」を与える仕組み。詳細は書いていないから、contributionが何を意味するのか不明だが、対価＝お金を支払うということか？参加店は、状況によっては、トイレ利用を断る権利を有するともある。怪しい人たちにはトイレは貸さないということか。トイレ利用の際、何かを買ったり注文したりしなくても良い前提ではあるけれど、利用した人たちは罪悪感からか、何かを買ったりする人も少なからずいるらしいので、店にとってもメリットはあるようだ。参加店は、シティ・オブ・ロンドンのウェブサイトでチェック可能。

I saw this sticker on one of restauranst in the City. I am curious about what it is and checked it out. According to the City of London website, City’s Community Toilet Scheme (CTS) is to provide toilet facilities available to the public with partnership with local businesses, supplementing the City’s facilities. In exchange for providing free access to toilets to the public, the City pays a ‘contribution’ to participating businesses, though they still retains the right to refuse admission in exceptional circumstances. There is no details of ‘contribution’ means, but maybe money? Anyways, this scheme brings win-win to everyone involved. It is reported that people using their toilets often do make a purchase, though they don’t need to buy anything. You can check participating businesses on their websites.
