Routemaster Letter Rack by Susan Bradley

テート・ブリテンのショップで、ロンドンの旧式ルートマスターをかたどったレターラック・Routemaster Letter Rack（£20）を買った。イギリス人デザイナーのSusan Bradleyがデザイン。彼女の製品は全て、イングランド内で作られているそう。コーティングを施した鉄製で、そのまま置いても使えるし、壁にかけられるようにもなっている。可愛くて私たちのお気に入り。

We bought this London’s iconic Routemaster Letter Rack (£20), designed by British designer Susan Bradley, at the Tate Britain shop. All her products are proudly made in England, which are rarity nowadays. The letter rack is made of coated steel, and can be free standing or wall mounted. Very cute, and we love it!

Marks & Spencer Diamond Jubilee Collection

6月2〜5日に予定されている、エリザベス女王のダイアモンドジュビリーの祭典（王室公式サイト）にあわせて発売された、マークス＆スペンサーの商品たち。缶入りのショートブレッドやチョコレート、マシュマロをチョコレートでコーティングしたTeacake、ペーパーナプキン、紙皿等々。イギリス国旗、女王の横顔、またロンドンの様々なアイコンをあしらった、レトロでキュートなパッケージは、クリスマス商品（参照ブログ記事）も手がけたイラストレーターのPhil Hankinson（フィル・ハンキンソン）氏がデザインした。期間限定商品で、イギリス土産にもぴったり。

These are the Marks & Spencer’s products, celebrating Queen’s Diamond Jubilee weekend (June 2 – 5 →official website of the British Monarchy). These cute retro packages with Union Jack, Queen’s silhouette, and London’s various icons, are designed by an illustrator Phil Hankinson who was also in charge of M&S’s Christmas products (past entry). Treats such as shortbread and chocloate in tin boxes, teacakes (chocolate coated marshmallows), as well as party wares such as paper napkins and dishes – these limited period products are also perfect for souvenirs from Britain.

I will have a break from blog until May 22, though just after 4-day Easter weekend.  See you soon :-)

Natural Bristle Cushion Brush by G B Kent & Sons

獣毛のブラシが髪にいいと何かで読んだので、John Lewisオンラインショップで、G B Kent & Sons（Kent Brushes：G.B. ケント）のヘアブラシを買った。1777年創業のG.B. ケント社は、ジョージ3世から9代の治世に渡って王室御用達証を得てきた、由緒あるブラシメーカー。製造過程の多くは手作業で、今も「メイド・イン・イングランド」にこだわる。お手頃なブラシも生産しているが、伝統的技術を使い、職人が手作業で仕上げる100％ハンドメイド製品は、その品質・使い心地に高い評価を得ている。

ケント社は、bristle（ブリッスル：動物の硬い毛）を使ったブラシと、品質へのこだわりに定評がある。インドや中国の業者から最高品質の天然豚毛ブリッスルを仕入れ、柄に使用される木材は持続可能な森林から伐採された、美しさ、木目、色、加工しやすさを鑑みて厳選されたもの。そしてゴム製のクッションは柔らかさと強さ、デリケートな頭皮への心地良さと共に、何年もの使用に耐える耐久性を持つ。無理にひっぱることなく絡まった髪をやさしくとかすため、毛先は注意深く丸くされている。

私が買ったものは高価な手作り製品ではなく、ミディアムサイズ（19.5cm x 5cm）の天然黒色ブリッスルのゴムクッション・ブラシ、CSFM（£25）。製品説明には、「ブリッスルは、髪を清潔にし、艶を与え、頭皮を刺激する」とある。そのカーブのかかった柄は持ちやすく、手にフィットする。弾力性に富むブリッスルは気持ちよく頭皮をマッサージするのだが、何せ剛毛・多毛の持ち主なので、頭のてっぺんから後頭部まではいいのだが、そこから下は表面しかブリッスルが届かない。確かにブラッシングすると艶は出るのだが、しすぎるとちょっと油っぽくなり、ブリッスルが届かない毛先の辺りは静電気が起こって髪がフワフワ浮いてしまう。このブラシは、毛質が細くて毛量の少ないイギリス人のために作られたものだからだろうか。ブリッスルの感触は心地良いし、いいブラシには違いないのだと思うが、残念ながら、どうも私の髪質には合わないらしい。。。

I bought a G B Kent & Sons‘ hairbrush on John Lewis online shop, as  I read that animal hair brush makes hair healthy and shine. Founded in 1777, G B Kent & Sons, also known as Kent Brushes, is a manufacturer of high quality brushes in England, and has been granted of Royal Warrants for nine reigns from George III. The company continues to retain the craftsmanship and produces some of their brushes by hand with traditional methods (100% handmade range), as well as more affordable ones. And those are still proudly “made in England”.

Kent are renowned for their bristle brushes and their passion for high quality. The bristle is sourced from the finest bristle merchants in India and China. Timbers are chosen from sustainable forests throughout the world, selected for their beauty, grain, colour and suitability to be shaped, drilled and polished. Rubber cushions are selected for softness and strength, comfortable for delicate scalps but strong enough to be durable and withstand years of use. Plastic quills have carefully rounded ends to tease their way through tangled hair without pulling or tugging.

What I bought was not an expensive handmade one, but a medium sized (19.5cm x 5cm) pure black natural bristle cushion brush CSFM (£25). The bristle cleans hair, promotes shine and stimulates the scalp, according to Kent’s description. Its curbed handle nicely fits my hand and is easy to grip. The bristle is hard enough to stimulate my scalp comfortably. However, my hair is too thick and too many, and the brush doesn’t go all the way from the back of my head to down the edge… I can brush only top and side of my head, but not the bottom of my hair. Probably the brush is made for British fine hair type… The brush does make my hair shinier, but brushing too much make my hair a bit too greasy and causes static electricity. It is nice looking brush and the bristle feels great, but it doesn’t really work out for my hair type…

Marks & Spencer Scottish Shortbread Tin

最近、マークス＆スペンサーのストアブランドのパッケージデザインが可愛い（また追々紹介します）。ちょっとレトロなデザインのクリスマス用缶入りビスケット各種（参考：gumo gazette）もよくできていて、プレゼントやパーティの手みやげに最適。この、ロンドン名物2階建てバスをモチーフにした缶入りビスケットは、スコットランド発祥の伝統菓子・Shortbread（ショートブレッド）3種27個入りで、お値段は£8。イラストを描いたのは、イラストレーターのPhil Hankinson（フィル・ハンキンソン）氏。そのレトロでクラシックな画風は、チェコスロバキアの絵本作家・Miroslav Sasek（ミロスラフ・サセック）の名作「This is London」（1959年）を彷彿させる。中のビスケットを食べ終わっても、小物入れとして使えそう。ロンドンのお土産にもぴったり。

Recently package design of Marks & Spencer‘s store brands has improved (I will talk more later). Retro-feel Christmas biscuit tins is well-done (reference: gumo gazette), and is good for a present and gift. This tin box with London’s famous double-decker contains a selection of 27 shortbreads in 3 varieties, and costs £8. The package was designed by illustrator Phil Hankinson, and the his style resembles the old classic “This is London” (1959) by Czech illustrator and auther, Miroslav Sasek. You can re-use the tin box after finishing all biscuits, and this is a great souvenir of London as well.

London Landscape Greeting Cards by The Art Rooms

先日、サーチ・ギャラリーに行った時に買った、グリーティング・カード（各£2.99）。ロンドンの風景のシルエットと、鮮やかな原色カラーを組み合わせた、シンプルだけど洗練されたデザインがとても素敵。このLandscapesシリーズには、ロンドンの他、ヨークシャー、スコットランド、湖水地方のものがある。作っているのは、2007年創業のThe Art Rooms社。「Inspired by the UK. Designed in the UK. Made in the UK.（イギリスにインスピレーションを受け、イギリスでデザイン。イギリス製）」を謳い、グリーティング・カード、プリント、台所用品やギフトを扱っている。同じくロンドン各地の風景を扱ったポストカードやマグカップ、テーブルマット、コースターもあり、ロンドン土産として喜ばれそう。ミュージアムショップやデザイン系雑貨を扱う店の他、オンラインストアでも買える。

These are the greeting cards (£2.99@) we purchased at the Saatchi Gallery. The design of combining a silhouette of London landscape with block of bright color is simple yet sleek. This landscapes series of greeting cards also includes Yorkshire, Scotland, and Lake district, as well as London. The The Art Rooms, which produced the greeting cards, was founded in 2007 and designs and creates greeting cards, prints kitchenware and gifts, with a concept of “Inspired by the UK. Designed in the UK. Made in the UK.” There are also postcards, bone china mugs, table mats and coasters with London’s landscapes, and those are perfect souvenirs from London. You can buy them at selected stores or at their online shop.
