One Sunny Day in Greenwich

5月も終わり近いというのに季節が逆行、寒くて曇り空ばかりの日が続くロンドン。ちょっと古い話になるけれど、春らしい日が続いた約2週間前のある日、ロンドン南東部のグリニッジに足を伸ばした。グリニッジ平均時の基準都市として名前は知っていたけれど、長年ロンドンに住んでいるにも関わらず、この世界遺産となっている街に行ったのは恥ずかしながらこれが初めて。あいにく午後遅く着いたので、有名なグリニッジ天文台やカティーサーク号等中には入れず、周囲の散策だけで終わってしまった（恥）。見所全て説明すると長ったらしくなるので、詳細はリンクをクリックして、Wikipediaを参照してください。

It is almost the end of May, but it has been cold and cloudy in London these days. Where is the spring sun?! About two weeks ago, the city had experienced brief moment of sun and warm days, so we went to Greenwich, South East London. I know the name of the town since I studied Greenwich Mean Time at school, but we’d never been there during all these years of living in London, and incredibly this was the first time for us to visit this World Heritage Site (I know it’s a shame). Unfortunately we couldn’t go inside of the historical monuments such as Cutty Sark and Royal Observatory, as we arrived late afternoon, but just walked around the Greenwich Park. Another embarrassment… It would be too long if I explain all the places of interest, so please click a link and check Wikipedia for more details.

現存する唯一のティークリッパー船、カティーサーク号。中国からイギリスへ紅茶を運ぶのに使われた。保存のため大規模な修理と整備を行っていた2007年に火災が起き作業に遅れが出たが、2012年4月に一般公開が再開された（詳細）。

Cutty Sark, a British tea clipper ship that carried tea from China to UK. The ship was badly damaged by fire in 2007 while undergoing conservation, but the vessel has been restored and was reopened to the public in April 2012.

グリニッジ子午線（経度0度）における平均太陽時（mean solar time）を指すグリニッジ平均時を定めたグリニッジ天文台。1990年にケンブリッジに観測機関が移転した後は、National Maritime Museum（国立海事博物館）の一部として、天文観測や航海用具などを展示している。

Royal Observatory, known as the location of the prime meridian. After the observatory moved to Cambridge in 1990, a part of the buildings is used as a museum of astronomical and navigational tools, which is part of the National Maritime Museum.

Shepherdess Walk Mosaics

これらの優雅で素敵なモザイク画「History in the Making」は、去年5月に、2012年ロンドンオリンピックを記念して、ハックニーの小さな公園・Shepherdess Walk Parkに設置された。ハックニー区のプロジェクトであるこのモザイクは、ウェストミンスター寺院やテレンス・コンランのレストランなども手がけたイギリス人モザイクアーティスト・Tessa Hunkinがデザイン。8ヶ月の月日をかけて、麻薬やアルコール依存症からの快復を目指す人々を含む100人以上のボランティアの手によって作り上げられた。

右側2枚のパネルは、古代ローマ時代のモザイクからインスピレーションを得て、携帯電話やフリスビー、スケートボードなど現代のハックニー・ライフを表しており、春から冬まで四季折々、ハックニーの様々な公園でひとときを過ごす人々や元気に走り回る動物達が見て取れる。壁から突き出している幅の狭い壁には、モザイクのパターンと製作者の名前、そして詩人・Ken Edwardsによるポエムが記され、奥のパネルには、公園の名の元となった「shepherdess（羊飼いの女性）」たちが、彼女達の羊と共に描かれている。

These beautiful mosaics called “History in the Making” appeared on the walls of a small Shepherdess Walk Park in Hackney, in May last year. Funded by Hackney council to celebrate the year of the 2012 London Olympics, the mosaics are designed by British mosaic artist, Tessa Hunkin, whose works decorating Westminster Cathedral and Terrance Conran restaurants, and have been made by over 100 volunteers including people recovering from drug and alcohol addiction, taking 8 months to complete. 

The two panels were inspired by Roman mosaics but they also show details from Hackney life in 2012 with modern gadgets such as mobile phones, frisbees and skateboards. In four seasons from spring to winter, people + animals enjoying in various Hackney’s parks are depicted. Shorter walls coming out vertically show patterns and maker’s names, as well as a poem written by Ken Edwards. Another panel is dedicated to the shepherdesses who gave their name to the park, accompanied by their sheep.

Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain @ Hyde Park

前々回の続き。ハイドバークの南西でサーペンタイン・レイクの南に位置する、ダイアナ妃記念噴水（Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain）。先日書いたLido Café Barの隣で、サーペンタイン・ギャラリーにもほど近い。故ダイアナ妃の精神と子供たちへの愛を表現したというこの噴水は、アメリカ人ランドスケープ・アーティスト、Kathryn Gustafson（キャスリン・グスタフソン）がデザイン、3600万ポンドをかけて建設され、2004年7月6日にエリザベス女王によってオープンした。50m x 80mの大きな楕円形のこの記念噴水、噴水というより、小川という趣。片側はさざ波をたてて穏やかに流れ、もう片側は段差やカーブをつけることでよりダイナミックな流れになっており、両側で、故ダイアナ妃の幸せな日々と後年の激動の日々を、それぞれ表しているという。

記念噴水は、オープン直後に水の中で滑って怪我人が出たことで、しばらく閉鎖。安全対策が加えられ、2004年8月に再オープンした。現在は、子供たちが噴水の中に入ることが許されており、私たちが訪れた曇って肌寒い日でも、親子連れで賑わい、子供たちが元気に水遊びをしていた。

Continuation to Lido Café Bar and Serpentine Gallery Pavilion. Located in the southwest corner of Hyde Park and south of the Serpentine Lake, next to Lido Café Bar and a stone away from Serpentine Gallery Pavilion, the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain is a memorial to Diana, Princess of Wales. It was designed to express Diana’s spirit and love of children by Kathryn Gustafson, an American landscape artist, and cost £3.6 million, and was officially opened on 6 July 2004 by Queen Elizabeth II. The fountain with the form of a large, oval stream bed about 50 by 80 m (165 by 260 feet),  is more like a creek, rather than a fountain. The two sides, one with smooth stream bed and gentle ripples, and the other with more dynamic water flow through a variety of steps, rills, curves, and other shapes, were intended to show the two sides of Diana’s life; happy times and turmoil.

The fountain was closed, shortly after its opening and three injuries caused by slipping in the water, and it reopened in August 2004 after adding some safety measures. Now children can play in the flowing water again, and many kids enjoyed the fountain, even on the cloudy and chilly day we visited.

Lido Café Bar @ Serpentine, Hyde Park

ハイドパークにあるLido Café Barは、サーペンタイン・レイクの南に面した、気持ちのいいカフェ＆バー。以前は、ちょっと薄暗い感じだったけれど、2010年春に、Kensington Gardens（ケンジントン・ガーデンズ）やThe Regent’s Park（リージェンツ・パーク）、サウスバンク・センターのRiverside Terrace Café、Royal Opera House（ロイヤル・オペラ・ハウス）のレストランを手がけるCompany of Cooksに経営が引き継がれてから、懐かしい感じのするレトロなインテリアの、明るいスペースに生まれ変わった。改装後は、タイムアウト誌の「London’s best park cafés」（2010年4月）や「London’s best cafés with fountains」（2010年7月）の一つにも選ばれている。

中にも席はあるけれど、天気のいい日は是非外で。ボート遊びをするカップルや家族連れ、池に投げ込まれたパンを取り合いするアヒルたちを眺めながらゆっくりしたい。また「Lido」（屋外水泳プールの意）という名にあるように、そばには屋外水泳場もあり、下着ではしゃいでいる若い女の子のグループや、ウェットスーツを着込んだ、年季の入った年配スイマーたちがガンガン泳いでいるのも見える。

朝8時からオープン、日の長い夏場は9時まで（閉店時間は季節によって違うので確認を）、朝食メニューからサンドイッチ、ピザ、サラダなどの軽食やケーキ類のほか、ハンバーガーやサーモンのフィレ、ステーキなどのちゃんとした食事もできる。今日、私たちは、レバノンの平たいパンをベースにした、トマト、モッツァレラチーズ、ルッコラのピザを注文。トマトソースやフレッシュなロケットとか、味は悪くないんだけれど、ピザ生地はやっぱり正統派イタリアンの方がいい。それにフレッシュなモッツァレラチーズではなく、細切れのプロセスチーズが使われていたのにも、ちょっとがっかり。でも、Riverside Terrace Caféと同じ、シンプルな白い防水紙に包まれたサンドイッチは見た目もフレッシュで美味しそう。チョイスを誤ったか。でも食後のバナナのスライスケーキはちょっと乾燥していたけれど、なかなか。コーヒーも美味しい。近くにある、サーペンタイン・ギャラリーやダイアナ妃記念噴水（Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain）に来た折りに、ちょっと一休みするのにぴったりのカフェだ。

Lido Café Bar in Hyde Park is a pleasant café, facing on the south coast of the Serpentine lake. Refurbished and taken over early this year by Company of Cooks, which manages food&drink venues in the Kensington Gardens and the Regent’s Park as well as Southbank’s Riverside Terrace Café and Royal Opera House restaurant, Lido has been transformed to cheerful retro-chic space from previously gloomy and a bit depressing decor. Now Lido is chosen as one of the “London’s best park cafés (April 2010)” and “London’s best cafés with fountains (July 2010)” by the Time Out magazine.

There are indoor and outdoor seating areas, but you should sit at an outside table when it is a nice day. You can enjoy looking at couples and families enjoying the day on a boat, or ducks pecking and fighting for a piece of bread thrown in. As its name suggests, there is a ‘lido (open-air swimming pool)’ close by and you can see a group of young girls in underwear splashing in the water and experienced old swimmers in wet suits swimming back and forth.

This all-day café opens at 8 am, and until it closes at 9pm in summer time (closing times varies – see the website), offers from breakfast, lunch,  cakes and light meals such as sandwiches and pizzas to full meals like burgers, steak, and salmon fillet. Today we ordered a pizza with tomato and mozzarella cheese with rocket on Lebanese flat bread. The taste was not bad and tomato sauce and rocket were fine, but I prefer traditional Italian pizza dough. The use of shredded cheese instead of fresh mozzarella was another disappointment. Their sandwiches, wrapped with simple white water-proof paper, the same as in the Riverside Terrace Café, looked fresh and delicious – we might have made the wrong choice! However, a slice of banana cake for desert was a bit dry but nice, and the espresso was good. Lido is a perfect place for refreshment and a little rest when you come to next door “Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain” and nearby Serpentine Gallery.

Highbury Fields @ Islington

雨が多かったイースターの休日（今年は4月2日〜5日）が終わり、今日は、暖かくてお天気のいい、とても春らしい日だったので、久しぶりに、Le Péché Mignonでランチした。このカフェの中庭のテーブルがお気に入りで、天気のいい日の定番のランチ場所になのだけれど、冬の間は寒いので、もう何ヶ月も来ていなかった。そして、Le Péché Mignonに来た時は、いつもこのHighbury Fields（ハイブリー・フィールズ）を散歩してから帰る。

Rainy Easter holidays (April 2 to 5 this year) was over, and it is a warm and sunny spring day today – finally. So we had lunch at Le Péché Mignon, our regular lunch place for sunny days at their cozy courtyard, after long cold winter months. Every time we go to Le Péché Mignon, we take a walk in Highbury Fields after lunch.

ハイブリー・フィールズは、Highbury & Islington（ハイブリー&イズリントン）駅の北にある、ビクトリア朝やジョージアン様式のタウンハウスに囲まれた閑静な公園で、イズリントン区最大のオープンスペース。テニスコートやサッカー場、子供の遊び場、そしてHighbury Pool and Fitness Centreという、公営のスポーツセンターを備える。

Surrounded by elegant Georgian and Victorian town houses, Highbury Fields is located north of the  Highbury & Islington station and is the largest open space in the borough of Islington, with tennis courts, football pitch and a children’s play area as well as recently refurbished Highbury Pool and Fitness Centre.

近くにある、アーセナルのホーム・Arsenal Stadiumで試合がある日は、試合が終わった後は、赤白のアーセナルのチームカラーに身を包んだファンが、公園を通ってぞろぞろ帰ってきて、「ウォーリーをさがせ！」状態になる。

When Arsenal F.C. has a home game at Arsenal Stadium nearby, Highbury Fields looks like a page of “Where’s Wally?” after the game, with tons of fans coming back through the park in Arsenal’s team color red x white shirts and bar scarves.

公園の横にある、アイスクリーム屋さん。天気の良い日は、長い行列ができる。こちらでよく見かけるこのような移動式アイスクリーム屋さん、ソフトクリームにチョコレートスティックをのせたものや、市販のアイスクリーム・バーを売っている。何故かイタリアの国旗を掲げたりイタリア風の名前をつけているけれど、イタリアのジェラートとは似ても似つかない。

An ice cream van on the side of the park. There is always a long line/queue in sunny afternoons. This kind of ice cream vans are quite popular in UK, and sells soft ice cream with chocolate stick on the top and manufactured ice cream bars. Though they colored their vans in red, white and green like Italian national flag, and put Italian names, but their ice creams are not Italian at all – just in case you expect Italian gelato from them.

公園の南側にある、戦死傷したイズリントン住民を記念し、1906年に建てられた、アールヌーボー風のボーア戦争碑。

An art nouveau style war memorial dating from 1906 at the south end of the fields, that commemorates Islington residents who fell in the Boer War.
