Old Street: UK’s Hopeful “Silicon Roundabout”

数日前、ロンドンに帰ってきたら、デービッド・キャメロン首相が、オールド・ストリートから2012年オリンピック会場予定地までの東部ロンドンを、テクノロジー産業が集まるイギリスの「シリコン・バレー」にするという、「East London Tech City」計画を発表したとのニュースが、マスコミを賑わせていた（Independent記事）。グーグル、フェースブック、インテルなど大手ハイテク企業が、多くのITベンチャーが集まるオールド・ストリートやショーディッチ地区の小規模ビジネスに投資する事を表明しており、キャメロン首相はイギリスを、革新的なテクノロジー企業の設立・出資に、世界で最も魅力的な場所にすると息巻いている。その目標達成のために、移民数制限を押し進める現政権の政策とは対象的に、外国人起業家を受け入れるアメリカ式の投資ビザの創設や、インターネット時代に対応するための著作権法を見直しの約束した（BBC記事）。

今あの環状交差路は、シリコン・バレーをもじって、「Silicon Roundabout (シリコン・ラウンドアバウト)」と呼ばれているそうだ。確かに、クリエイターが多い地域とは知っていたけれど、交通量が多くてチープな店に囲まれた、殺風景でお世辞も魅力的とは言えないオールド・ストリートの環状交差路（roundabout）が、輝かしい将来を約束するテクノロジー産業の中心地だとは、少し驚き。真ん中の古びたアーチ型のオブジェも先進的とは言いがたいし、あの薄汚くて少し気味の悪い地下鉄オールド・ストリート駅も、イメージチェンジしてほしいところだ。

When we came back to London few days ago, media excitedly reported that Prime Minister David Cameron announced “East London Tech City” plan to transform London’s East End, an area between Old Street and 2012 Olympic Park, into a British version of “Silicon Valley” and leading technology hub in the world (Independent article). High tech companies such as Google, Facebook and Intel are said to invest in new small firms in the Old Street and Shoreditch areas where many creative firms are located. The Prime Minister boasted that he would make Britain “the most attractive place in the world to start and invest in innovative technology companies”. In order to achieve his goal, the Government will create US-style visas for foreign entrepreneurs who start businesses in the UK, on a contrary to the Tory’s policies to curb growing immigration, and review copyright laws to fit for the internet age (BBC article).

The Old Street roundabout is now called “Silicon Roundabout” – I knew that Old Street is a creative area, but I can’t believe that the ugly and shabby rotary with heavy traffic, surrounded by cheap stores, is the bright future of technology industry in the UK!! Also the 80’s style arch-shaped sculpture in the middle doesn’t really represent high-tech, and dirty and scary-looking Old Street tube station need to have a major make-over to look more “high-tech”.

そのシリコン・ラウンドアバウトの一角に、英カフェ・チェーンのEat.がつい最近オープンした。最近出来たガラス張りのビルの1階に陣取るEat.は、側面が全面ガラス張りで、天気のいい日は気持ちがいい（でもこの季節、太陽を拝める日は少ないけれど）。また、環状交差路を流れる車や、せわしなく行き交う人々をぼーっと眺めるのにも最適。インテリアもクリエイターの多いこのエリアにふさわしく、シックでモダンな感じ。ただ、Mによると、エスプレッソは他のチェーン同様、今イチみたいだけれどね。

Facing this famous rotary, UK café chain Eat. opened its new branch quite recently. Sitting on the ground floor of the newly constructed building, Eat. is spacious and has large floor-to-ceiling glass windows that we can enjoy plenty of sun light when it’s sunny (but unfortunately, we don’t see much sun around this season). It is also perfect spot to watch constantly flowing traffic and people passing by at this busy intersection. Its interior is modern and chic, which is suitable for this creative area. But the problem is, as the same in other chain cafés, their below-standard espresso – for M.

‘Street Museum’ Mobile app by The Museum of London

今日のBBCニュースで取り上げられていた、Museum of London（ロンドン博物館）のiphone用無料アプリ「Street Museum」をダウンロードした。Museum of Londonは、60年代から70年代にかけて、シティ・オブ・ロンドンの爆撃で破壊されたエリアを再開発したバービカン・センターの一部で、先史時代から現代に至るまでのロンドンの歴史を展示している。

Street Museumは、ロンドンの歴史を物語る写真や絵画のオンライン・カタログ。1666年のロンドン大火からカーナビー・ストリートに代表される1960年代のスウィンギング・ロンドンまで、博物館所蔵の何百枚もの写真や絵画にアクセス、ロンドンの日常の街角や歴史的出来事を垣間みることができる。

使い方は簡単。アプリを開くと出てくる地図でお目当ての場所を見つけるか、携帯端末に内蔵されているGPSで近場にあるイメージを探し、地図上にあるピンをタップするか、「3D View」ボタンをタップし、カメラを見たい場所に掲げると、その場所の古いイメージが出てくる。そして、そのイメージをタップすれば、その場所の歴史的トリビアを読むことができる。

既に、10万人がこのアプリをダウンロードしたそうだが、今日のBBCニュースで取り上げられたので、さらにダウンロード数は増えるだろうな。

I downloaded a free iphone app ‘Street Museum‘, created by the Museum of London, after I saw the BBC News picked it up today. The Museum of London documents the history of London from the Prehistoric to the present day. It is located close to the Barbican Centre, as part of the Barbican complex of buildings created in the 1960s and 70s as an innovative approach to re-development within a WWII bomb damaged area of the City.

‘Street Museum’ is an online catalogue of photos and paintings from London’s history. From the Great Fire of 1666 to the swinging sixties, you can have an access to hundreds of images from the museum collections that showcase both everyday and momentous occasions in London’s history.

It is easy to use – select a destination from the map or use your GPS to locate an image near you. Or press ‘3D View’ and hold up your camera to the present-day location, and the old image of the same place appear on your screen. Then tap the old image for historical facts.

Already 100,000 people have downloaded this app, and after today’s BBC news coverage, many more will probably download it.

iPhone 3GS: My New Mobile Phone Finally in Use!!

昨日、新しい携帯iPhone 3GSがやっと使用可能となった。新しい携帯を買おうと決めてから、２ヶ月。たかが携帯なのに、紆余曲折を経た、長い道のりだった。この話は少し長く、ややこしいので、どうぞご辛抱下さい。

納得できるiphoneを待ち続けて、以前の契約を結ぶと無料になるモトローラ携帯を３年も使っていた。そして、やっとiPhone 3GSが発売され、今が買い時と決めたのが８月初旬。Mac信者のMはもちろんiPhone 3GSを即購入。私は、同じ携帯を持つのも面白くないかな？と思い、当時話題になっていたスマートフォン、HTC Heroをmobiles.co.ukで購入。HTC Heroは、iPhoneよりも本体も月額料金も安く、ソフトウェアをダウンロードすれば日本語も使えるとのこと。デザインも素敵だし、グーグルのAndroid OS搭載ということで、iPhoneの有力な対抗馬だ。HTC Heroが手元に届いて喜んでいたのも束の間。イギリスでは、元の電話番号を引き続き使用するためには、元のキャリアからPACコード（Porting Authorisation Code）を入手しないといけないのだが、私が持っていたコードは期限が切れており（入手してから30日間有効ということを知らなかった）、Vodafoneから新しい番号を与えられた。他のキャリアは、後からでも新しい番号から元の番号に変えられるのだが、Vodafoneは融通が利かず、いったん新しい番号になったら古い番号に切り替えられないと聞いて憤慨、即解約した。

そこで他のHTC HeroのキャリアであるOrange（フランステレコム傘下の携帯電話キャリア）で申し込み直そうと思っていた時、新聞で、ソフトウェアデザイナーがiphoneのアプリケーションに集中し、Android搭載の携帯にダウンロードできるアプリケーションの数が限られていると言う記事を読み、またiPhoneに方向転換。その時iPhoneは売り切れ中で、アップルと独占契約を結ぶキャリア・O2（スペインのテレフォニカ傘下の携帯電話会社）のウェブサイトは予約受付をしないため、もう1つのiPhoneの販売代理店・The Carphone Warehouse（以前ポール・ポッツが働いていた）で申し込んだ。しかし２週間経ってiPhoneは届かない。品切れなので仕方ないと思っていたが、問い合わせたら、なんと注文がキャンセルされているではないか！私はイギリスではCredit（信用）がないので、Mの名前で契約したのだが（前の携帯もM名義で契約）、アップル社の意向でiPhoneは1人1台しか契約できないので注文をキャンセルしたとのこと。断りも連絡もなく、ひどいじゃない！？と電話口で騒いでも「出来ないものは出来ない」とけんもほろろに扱われ、ギブアップ。

先の話に戻るが、私はイギリスでのCredit（信用）がない、というか充分ではない。携帯電話の契約やクレジットカードの申請では、充分なCreditがないと、拒否されることがある。私も以前クレジットカードを申請したのだが、Creditがないと却下された。大手信用調査会社Equifaxで自分のCredit Rating（信用度）を調べてみた。信用度は、Credit Agreement（クレジット契約履歴。銀行のデビットカードは持っているが、イギリス発行のクレジットカードは持っていない）、Electoral Roll（選挙登録。外国人だから当然選挙権はない）、Searches （6ヶ月以内に1、2回以上信用調査をされていると、心証が悪い。これは大丈夫）、 Court Information（破産等で裁判沙汰になったことがあるか。これもOK）の4項目で評価され、私は2項目で悪かったので、Credit Ratingは最低ラインの「poor」。iPhoneは無理かなあと思っていた。でも、最近iPhoneを買った友達によると、携帯市場は競争が激しいので、信用度が低くても大丈夫だよとのこと。勇気づけられて、またCarphone Warehouseで申し込んだら、£150デポジットを払えば可能だと言われたので、即契約。先週木曜日、ようやく念願のiPhoneを手にした。新しい電話番号から以前の番号への移行がスムーズにいかず、いらいらしたが、昨日やっと以前の番号が使えるようになった！！

iPhoneを申し込んで数日後。ニュースで、O2のイギリスでの2年間の独占契約が切れ、Orangeがクリスマスまでに、そしてVodafoneは来年早々にも、iPhoneの販売を開始すると知った。£150のデポジットは払わないといけなかったものの、Creditのない私がiphoneをゲットできたのは、これら2社の参入の前に、O2が顧客を囲い込みたかったからだろう。他の会社が参入したら、値段も安くなったかもしれないと思うと少し悔しいが、まあiPhoneを手に入れられただけでも良しとしよう。。。

Yesterday my new iPhone 3GS started to work. It’s been 2 months since I decided to buy a new mobile. It is just a mobile, but there were a lot of obstacles to get it. It is a bit complicated to explain, and is a long story, so please be patient…

We had been waiting for ‘perfect’ iPhone and had been using our free-with-contract silly Motorola phone for 3 years. After long waiting, iPhone 3GS came out and it was early August when we finally decided to get an iPhone 3GS. Mac fanatic M bought it right away without any problem. I bought, instead of my original idea to buy iPhone, another smartphone HTC Hero at mobiles.co.uk – I thought it would be good to have a different phone from M so we could supplement with each other. HTC Hero with the Google Android platform was said to be a strong contender to iPhone, and its handset and monthly tariff are cheaper. Moreover, I fell in love with its sophisticated design and mat maroon color. I was so happy when I received it, but the excitement didn’t last long… In UK you need to obtain PAC code (Porting Authorisation Code) from your old carrier so that you can port their number to another network. But my PAC code was expired (I didn’t know its expiration was 30 days) and I was assigned a new phone number. You can change your new number to your previous number with other mobile phone carriers if you have the PAC code, except Vodafone – my new carrier. Vodafone is the only carrier that doesn’t port your old phone number once a new phone number is assigned. I was really upset that they gave me a new number without telling me that my PAC code is expired, and therefore I cancelled the contract right away.

When I was thinking to re-apply HTC Hero with other carrier Orange, I read an article “Google fails to squeeze smartphone market” and I changed my mind again and went back to iPhone. At that moment iPhones were sold out and UK exclusive carrier O2 didn’t allow me to pre-order, therefore I applied iPhone pre-order with another iPhone agent, the Carphone Warehouse (where Paul Potts used to work). But I had never received the handset after 2 weeks of my application. I thought it’d been sold out, but when I called up, I was told that my application was cancelled!! According to the person I spoke to, Apple allows only one iPhone per customer, and I applied under M’s name who already had one as I don’t have good credit in UK. I was screaming to the phone that I had never been contacted by anyone for the cancellation, but ‘NO’ meant ‘NO’ and it was useless to continue.

I don’t have a good credit here in UK and I was worrying about applying under my name. I ordered credit rating from a consumer credit reporting agency Equifax – the credit rating was based on Credit Agreement (I don’t have UK credit card but only debit cards), Electoral Roll (I can’t vote as I am a foreigner), Searches (credit grantors view more than one or two credit searches within six month unfavorably, and I had no search), and Court Information (I have no court judgment or other public record information and it was fine). I got ‘poor’ and ‘very poor’ for tow categories and therefore my overall rating was the worst rating ‘very poor.’ I almost gave up my hope, but my Japanese friend who got iPhone recently told me that the carrier wouldn’t refuse me because of severe competition in mobile phone market. This encouraged me to apply at the Carphone Warehouse again under my name this time, and I was allowed to get contract with £150 deposit in advance! I received my dream phone last Thursday, but the number porting was not smooth and long waiting on hold with O2 frustrated me a lot, but finally my old number was ported and started to work yesterday!!!

Few days after my application of iPhone, breaking news came in – O2 would loose their exclusive contract with Apple for 2 years, and Orange before Christmas, and Vodafone at the beginning of next year will join in UK iPhone market. Probably O2 wanted to get as many contracts as possible before these two strong rivals come in the market. No wonder why they accepted me with very poor credit. I regret a little that I didn’t wait for few more days, so that I could wait for the possible better deals from the competition, but I guess I must be happy for just being able to get it after all these troubles…

New Virgin Media ‘Broadband XXL’ installed

昨日、ヴァージン・メディア（Virgin Media）のテクニシャンが来て、今までの「Broadband XL」プランから「Broadband XXL」にアップグレードしてもらった。モデムは、それまでの白のプラスチックのモデムと比べ、スタイリッシュな、光沢のあるブラック。回線スピードは今までの最大20mbpsから最大50mbpsにアップした。

ヴァージン・メディアは、ヴァージン・アトランティック航空を起したリチャード・ブランソン率いるヴァージン・グループ（Virgin Group）傘下にある会社で、ケーブルテレビ、ブロードバンド・インターネット接続、電話、携帯電話事業を行っている。イギリスにおけるブロードバンド・インターネット接続プロバイダー最大手で、28％のシェアを占める（2006年調べ）。ちなみに第二位はBTグループで23％。18ヶ月の回線改良工事の後、ヴァージン・メディアはそのネットワーク提供範囲を3倍に引き上げることに成功、この高速光ファイバー回線を最大1200万のイギリス家庭に提供することが可能になった。現在は「Broadband XXL」プランで月額£52.00だが、9月1日から£35.00ポンドに価格が引き下げられるそうだ。

最大50mbpsというスピードは現在、イギリスのブロードバンド・プロバイダーの中で最速。100mbps、1Gbpsが最大速度の、世界1、2を争う高速回線を持つ日本と比べると、大したことはないんだろうけれど、ここイギリスにとっては画期的な出来事なのだ。ちなみに、ITIFの2008年のブロードバンドランキングでは、イギリスは世界第13位（日本は、韓国に次いで第2位）。平均ダウンロード速度は、一位の日本の63.6mbpsに比べ、2.6mbpsだったから、それに比べたら、大きな一歩じゃないか。

でもこの新しい50mbps回線、特段速くなった感じはなく、むしろ少し遅くなってる感じ。どういうこと？？

Yesterday Virgin Media technician came to our apartment, and set up a new modem to upgrade the plan from ‘Broadband XL‘ to ‘Broadband XXL‘. The internet speed went up from up to 20mbps to up to 50mbps. The glossy black modem is stylish and more compact than the old boring white plastic one.

Virgin Media is a provider for home telephone, cable television, broadband and mobile services to the UK, and a part of Virgin Group founded by British business tycoon Sir Richard Branson. Virgin Media is the top UK broadband provider, and it took 28% share of the UK market in 2006, and the second BT (British Telecommunication) had 23%. After 18 months of upgrades, Virgin Media has now tripled its network capacity and is able to offer a 50Mb broadband package to 12 million homes across the UK. Now ’Broadband XXL’ plan costs £52.00, but as of September 1st, Virgin Media will slash the price to £35.00.

The 50Mb service is currently the fastest commercially available broadband connection on the UK market. It may sound a big deal in compare to South Korea and Japan, the top two countries on ITIF 2008 Broadband Ranking, where the internet speed up to 100mbps or even up to 1Gbps are available. But it is a great improvement for UK, which is the 13th on the world ranking, and the average download speed in Mbps was only 2.6 in 2008,in compare to the fastest Japan of 63.6.

But I feel like the speed of this new service is not faster but rather slower – what is going on?!

TomTom GO 730: portable GPS car navigation system

今日、来週のコッツウォルズ旅行のために買った、ポータブル・カーナビ、TomTom GO 730が届いた。地図を読むのは得意な方だが、時に迷ってMと大げんかしたことが多々あるので、それを教訓に、今回の旅行前に買う事にした。オランダに本社を置くTom Tomは、ヨーロッパにおけるカーナビ市場のトップ企業である。イギリスのテクノロジー雑誌T3（オンライン）の評価を元に、評価が高く、コンパクトで音声操作のできるTomTomに決めた。そしてネットで値段・特典を比較、イギリスの車部品・アクセサリー、自転車販売会社の大手、Halfordsのオンラインストアで注文。Halfordsは、TomTomのカーナビに割引コードを使うと£30.00オフ、また２年間無料の地図の更新ができるクーポン＋無料のケース付き（手違いでケースは今日届かなかったけれど）とお買い得だった。時間はかかるけれど、ネットで根気よく調べると、色々割引や特典が見つかるものですね。

We got a brand-new TomTom GO 730 Sat Nav for our trip to Cottswalds next week. Tom Tom is a Dutch manufacturer of automotive navigation systems and is the leading manufacturer of navigation systems in Europe. Although I believe that I am good at reading a map, but I got a lesson from previous trips, since we sometimes got  lost with the directions and thereforewe made lots of fights, so we decided to buy a sat nav. We also checked T3 (UK-based technology magazine which specialises in gadgets, gizmos, and other technology) online review, and chose Tom Tom, because of its ‘voice address input’ features and its compact size, and overall high reviews. Then we checked the price comparison sites, and bought it from Halfords online shop, a British leading retailer of car parts, car enhancements and bicycles. Halfords had a promotional code for TomTom sat nav for £30.00 off, and came with 2 years free map update service + free case (though it didn’t come today with the same delivery by their mistake). Although it is back-breaking and time consuming, the internet is great to look for information and discounts!
