“Biutiful” @ Prince Charles Cinema, Leicester Square

先日、チャイナタウンの近くにあるPrince Charles Cinemaで、現在公開中の映画「Biutiful（ビューティフル）」を観た。Prince Charles Cinemaは、最新のハリウッド映画からカルト、アートハウス、古典まで、違う映画を週に10本以上上映する、「repertory cinema（レパートリー・シネマ）」と呼ばれる独立系映画館で、映画ファンの間でカルト的な人気を誇る。サウンド・オブ・ミュージックやロッキー・ホラー・ショーなど、観衆が映画音楽に合わせて一緒に歌う「Singalonga Shows」や特別イベントなども行われる。現在地に移った1991年より低価格路線をとっていて、最近増設された上階スクリーンで上映される映画は£7.50（平日5時まで）/£9.50、地下上映分は£5.00（平日5時まで）/£6.00。年間£10で会員になるとさらにお得で、第1週目平日5時までの地下上映価格が何と£1.50！

We saw the movie “Biutiful” at the Prince Charles Cinema near Chinatown the other day. Prince Charles Cinema is a repertory cinema, showing a rotating program of cult, arthouse, and classic films alongside recent Hollywood releases, typically more than ten different films a week on two screens. The cinema has achieved a cult status amongst movie fans, and also hosts “Singalonga Shows”, screening of sing-a-long version such as The Sound of Music as well as The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The cinema has operated low ticket pricing policies since 1991 when it moved to the current location. Ticket prices for recently added second screen in the upper levels cost £7.50 (weekday before 5pm)/£9.50, and prices for cinema downstairs are £5.00(weekday before 5pm)/£6.00. Prices with £10 annual membership are even cheaper, starting from £1.50 for 1st weekday matinees downstairs!

「Biutiful（ビューティフル）」は、アカデミー賞にもノミネートされた『バベル』を撮った、アレハンドロ・ゴンサレス・イニャリトゥ監督の最新作で、スペイン・バルセロナを舞台に、がんに冒されたシングルファザーのウクスバルが、危険な闇世界を生きる中で、父親としての自分、家族、愛、スピリチュアリティ、犯罪、罪悪感、そして迫りくる死など、様々な葛藤を抱えてもがく姿を描くドラマ。ペネロペ・クルスの夫であるハビエル・バルデムが主人公のウクスバルを演じ、カンヌ映画祭主演男優賞を受賞した。

ウクスバルには明るい面と暗い面がある。二人の子供に対しては強くて愛情深い父で、アルコール中毒で情緒不安定な妻とは別れたあとも良い関係を維持しようともがく。ウクスバルは、実の兄と中国人犯罪組織のボスとともに、路上で不法に物品販売、時に麻薬取引まで行うアフリカ移民や、中国人移民への不法労働の手配など、闇取り引きで生計を立てている。彼のパートナーたちと違って、ウクスバルは搾取する不法移民たちにも、尊厳を持って対応する。そんなある日、自分が末期ガンに侵され、余命数週間と診断され、死の恐怖に直面しながらも、子供たちとの残された時間を大切にしようとするが、さまざまな困難が彼を襲う。

21グラムやバベルにも共通する、イリャニトゥ監督独特の美しくも悲哀溢れる映像や、バルデムの熱演は素晴らしかったけれど、2時間22分もの上映時間の間、この重苦しい雰囲気に浸り続けるのはちょっと辛い。不法移民との関係が少し美化され過ぎという気もするし、折りにふれスクリーンに現れる亡霊？生霊？といった超常現象にも少し興ざめ。ちょっと期待外れだったかも。

Biutiful is the dark drama from Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu (21 Grams and Babel). It is a story of Uxbal – a cancer-ridden single father who struggles to reconcile fatherhood, love, spirituality, crime, guilt and mortality amid the dangerous underworld of modern Barcelona. Javier Bardem won Best Actor at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival with his role of Uxbal.

Uxbal is a man with a bright side and a dark side. He is a strong but caring and affectionate father to his two children, and struggles to maintain a healthy relationship with their mother, despite her problems with alcohol and instability. Uxbal is also a criminal who oversees a small underground empire alongside Chinese crime boss and Uxbal’s impulsive brother. Uxbal deals from drugs to construction, but unlike his partners in crime, he tries to treat those around him with dignity even as he trades in human misery. His precarious world begins to collapse when he’s diagnosed with a terminal cancer and has only few weeks left to live; he tries to put his affairs in order in the time he has left, but runs into big trouble (synopsis reference: fandango.com).

Like in 21 Grams and Babel, the directors’ beautiful cinematography with intense sadness and Bardem’s powerful acting is impressing, but it was quite exhausting to immerse myself in the gloominess for 2 hours and 22 minutes of screening. Also I thought the relationship between Uxbal and the illegal immigrants seems to be too goody-goody and unrealistic, and some paranormal scenes with ghosts and stuffs were too much. Overall, a bit disappointed…

Ennio Morricone @ Royal Albert Hall

4月10日、ロイヤル・アルバート・ホールで開催された、イタリア人作曲家・エンニオ・モリコーネのコンサートに行ってきた。最も偉大な映画音楽作曲家の一人とされるモリコーネは、これまでに何と500曲以上もの映画やテレビ音楽を作曲。代表作は「続・夕陽のガンマン」や「荒野の用心棒」、「ワンス・アポン・ア・タイム・イン・アメリカ」等、長年コンビを組んだマカロニ・ウェスタンの名監督・セルジオ・レオーネの作品だが、「エクソシスト2」、「アンタッチャブル」、そして「ニュー・シネマ・パラダイス」など、有名映画の音楽も担当している。映画界における長年の功労を認められ、2007年にはアカデミー賞名誉賞を受賞（5回のノミネートにも関わらず、音楽賞自体は受賞していない）。1928年に名誉賞が創設されて以来、この賞を受賞する2人目の作曲家となった。

モリコーネはイギリスでも名が知られているらしく、このコンサートも最上階の立ち見席（立ち見席でも£40もする）を除いて、チケットは売り切れ。私たちは数日前にチケットを買ったものだから、後ろのコーラス席しか席が取れなかったけれど、このコーラス席がなかなか掘り出し物。オーケストラ（The Roma Sinfonietta Orchestra）の裏側で、ステージに近く、演奏が間近に見える。指揮をしていたモリコーネの顔も見れたし、すぐ斜め前ではコーラスを務めたThe Crouch End Festival Chorusが歌っていて、迫力満点。この日は、セルジオ・レオーネの作品をはじめ、モリコーネの代表作を披露、アンコールも数曲ついて、拍手、口笛、地団駄と満員の観客も大喜びで、かなり盛り上がった。

私たちがロンドンでモリコーネのコンサートに行ったのは2度目。前回も同じくロイヤル・アルバート・ホールで、2007年11月のモリコーネの75歳の誕生日の記念コンサートだった。モリコーネも今年で82歳。矍鑠としていて、歳を感じさせない指揮ぶりだったけれど、もうロンドンではコンサートは見れない気がする。ちなみに私たちがロイヤル・アルバート・ホールに行ったのも、この2回のみ。家から遠いから、スケジュールを気にかけていなかった。椅子は座り心地が悪いし、前の席とのスペースも小さいけれど、やっぱりロンドンを代表するホールは、格式があっていい。今年は、ロンドンの夏の風物詩・プロムス（The Proms）にでも行ってみようかな。

We went to Italian composer Ennio Morricone‘s concert at Royal Albert Hall on April 10th. Considered as one of the most influential film composers, Morricone has composed and arranged scores for more than 500 film and television productions. Morricone is known for his characteristic film scores of Sergio Leone‘s Spaghetti Westerns such as A Fistful of Dollars, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Once Upon a Time in the West, but also wrote film scores for other popular movies like Exorcist II: The Heretic, Brian De Palma‘s The Untouchables, Giuseppe Tornatore‘s tear jerking Cinema Paradiso. He received the Honorary Academy Award in 2007 for his magnificent and multifaceted contributions to the art of film music, but he has never won any Academy Awards for Best Music, though he has been nominated for five times. He was the second composer to receive this award after its introduction in 1928.

It seems that Morricone is pretty much loved in UK as well, and the tickets were sold out as of the day before the concert, except standing seats on the top floor (and it cost £40!). We bought our tickets few days before the concert and there were only few Chorus seats left. However, these seats we got were not bad at all. It was on the back of the orchestra (The Roma Sinfonietta Orchestra) and we could see the performance quite well. Morricone was facing to us and the Crouch End Festival Chorus, the Choir of the night, was singing just in front of us. In the concert, Morricone performed his classic film soundtracks, including some of Sergio Leone’s spaghetti westerns, as well as several encore scores such as tear-jerking New Cinema Paradise. The concert was quite successful and audiences were excited – clapping hands, whistling, and stamping at the end.

This was the second time that we went to Morricone’s concert. The last time was at the Royal Albert Hall as well, in November 2003, for his 75th birthday memorial concert. He is going to be 82 years old this year, and though he was in a quite good shape but I am afraid that we may not be able to see him here in London again. This was also the second time to come to the Royal Albert Hall, as the hall is a bit far from home and we didn’t check the schedule much. But the hall is magnificent and love to come back more often, though their seats are not comfortable and the legroom is small for modern men’s body size. Maybe try to come for annual summer concert series the Proms this year.

休憩の合間は、お決まりの飲み物（アルコールが主）。会場は満員なのに、カウンターには1人ずつしか担当がいなくて、長蛇の列。列に慣れているイギリス人らしく、皆、忍耐強く待っている。Mは、ソビエト時代の食料品店の列のようだと、いつも文句を言う。

A long queue for a drink during an intermission. Though the hall was full, there was only one person working behind each counter. People were patiently waiting for their turn, as British are quite used to queuing. M always complains that it is like a bakery during Soviet Union era.

話題の映画続きで、今日もバービカン・シネマで映画「プレシャス」を見た。原作は、作家で詩人のSapphireが、自身の教師やソーシャルワーカーとしての体験を元に書いた小説「Push」（1996年）。「チョコレート（Monster’s Ball）」「 The Woodsman」（ケビン・ベーコン主演、前科1犯のペドファイル／児童性愛者の心の葛藤を描く秀作。日本未公開）等のプロデューサーであるリー・ダニエルスが監督、そしてアメリカ・トークショーの女王、オプラ・ウィンフリーがエグゼクティブ・プロデューサーを務める。また、マライア・キャリーやレニー・クラヴィッツ等のスターが脇役を固める話題作で、サンダンス映画祭やカンヌ映画祭等数々の映画祭で絶賛を浴び、今年度アカデミー賞の台風の目になると予想されている。

舞台は1987年のニューヨーク・ハーレム。主人公プレシャスは16歳のアフリカ系アメリカ人の女の子で、かなり太っていて友人もいない。生活保護を受け、毎日何もせずテレビを見ている母親は、何かにつけ、プレシャスに肉体的・精神的虐待を加える。プレシャスは、常に不在の実父に2回目の妊娠をさせられるが（一人目の女の子はダウン症を持っている）、ある日、妊娠を知った校長から退学処分を受ける。彼女は9年生まで進学しているにも関わらず、実は読み書きができない。彼女は、オルタナティブ・スクールを紹介され、そこの先生であるMs. Rain（ミズ・レイン）の助けと激励で、読み書きだけでなく、自分を愛し、信じることを学んでいく。そこで友達も初めてできた。ミズ・レインやクラスメイト、第二子を出産した病院の男性看護士（レニー・クラヴィッツ）、そしてソーシャルワーカー（マライア・キャリー）のサポートを受け、プレシャスは、無力で辛い子供時代と虐待的な母を過去のものとし、2人の子供を守るため、そして自分の人生を自分の力で生きるための第一歩を踏み出していく。

映画館は、テーマがテーマだからか、主な出演者を女性が占める映画だからか、女性客が大多数。映画に行く前に読んだ映画批評から、お涙ちょうだいの人気トーク番組・The Oprah Winfrey Show（オプラ・ウィンフリー・ショウ）を彷彿させるメロドラマを念頭に観に行ったのだが、なかなか真実味のある硬派な作品に仕上がっている。ストーリー自体は、これでもか！というぐらい不幸のオンパレードで、目新しいものではないけれど、これがデビュー作となる、主人公を演じたGabourey Sidibe（ガボレイ・シディビー）と、母親役のMo’Nique（モニーク。女優でコメディアン）が、とてもいい。シディビーは、辛い経験の中でも、彼女の想像の中でスターになった自分を思い描くことで、けなげに乗り越えていくプレシャス役を好演。諦めきった表情が何とも陰気なんだけれど、実は芯が強くて、笑うと可愛い。母親役のモニークは、フライパンを手にプレシャスを追いかけ回したり、物を投げつけたり、果てはテレビを階段の上から落として殺しそうになったりと、その迫力と言ったら、観ているこちらも身震いする。でも最後に、ソーシャルワーカーに問いつめられて、プレシャスの実父の行為を黙認、そしてプレシャスを虐待した理由を告白するシーンは、同情を誘い、憎みきれない。だからといって虐待を正当化してはいけないけれど、彼女も結局被害者で、プレシャスをそのはけ口にしていたのだ。いつも体を露出した格好で、ばっちりメークを決めている彼女からは想像できないけれど、すっぴんで熱演したマライア・キャリーも、ハスキーボイスでいい味出してる。先生役のPaula Patton（ポーラ・パットン）は、ハーレムの、しかもオルタナティブ・スクールの先生にしては綺麗すぎて、そしていい人過ぎてちょっと嘘っぽいけれど、生徒やその他の俳優たちは、ぴったりはまり役だった。

この映画は、昔、シディビーも通ったニューヨークのコミュニティー・カレッジで1学期間、週1回のインターンシップをした時のことを思い出させる。そこは、マイノリティーや移民の貧困家庭出身の生徒が大多数の学校で、プレシャスほどひどい状態じゃないにしても、家庭に問題があったり苦労している学生がいっぱいいた。でも彼らやプレシャス、そして彼女クラスメイトたちに共通することだが、皆精神的に強いのだ。弱音を言ったり文句を言ったりはするけれど、どんな状況にあっても、最後はあるがままを受け入れ、その日その日をたくましく生きている。苦労していて打たれ強いから、彼らは多少のことでは鬱とかになったりしない。所詮、自分でコントロールできないや過ぎたことをくよくよ悩むだけ損。前を向いて生きるしかないのだ。

We saw a new movie “Precious” at Barbican Cinema – we’ve been there for three week in a row. Precious is an adaptation of the award-winning 1996 novel Push by Sapphire, an American author and performance poet, based on her experience as a social worker and a teacher. The movie is directed by Lee Daniels, who is a producer of Monster’s Ball and The Woodsman, and Oprah Winfrey joined the team as one of the executive producer. Superstars and singers such as Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz played the supporting roles in the movie. Applauded in numerous film festivals in the world, including 2009 Sundance Film Festival and the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, Precious is one of the frontrunners for upcoming Academy Awards nomination tomorrow.

Set in Harlem in 1987, it is the story of Claireece “Precious” Jones (Gabourey Sidibe), a sixteen-year-old African-American girl, who is obese and has no friend. She lives with her physically and emotionally abusive mother (Mo’Nique) who is doing nothing but watching TV and living off social welfare. Precious is expelled from her school because she is pregnant for the second time by her absent father. She has reached the ninth grade but actually she can neither read nor write. Precious is offered the chance to transfer to an alternative school, Each One/Teach One, where Precious learns not only to read and write but also to believe in and love herself, with help and encouragement by her literacy teacher Ms. Rain (Paula Patton). She also makes friends at school for the first time. With all the support from Ms. Rain, her class mates, a male nurse (Lenny Kravitz) at the hospital she gave a birth, and her social worker (Mariah Carey), she takes her first step to to be a strong woman and a mother of two children, leaving her malicious mother and her powerless and painful childhood behind.

Probably because of the subject matter and the film’s mainly female cast, the majority of the audiences in the cinema were women. I expected the movie to be tear-jerking The Oprah Winfrey Show-ish melodrama, according to some of the movie reviews, but Precious was better than that. The story line itself, with all kinds of tragic incidents happened to the teenager, is nothing new, but the screen debuted Sidibe and an comedienne and actress Mo’Nique did a excellent job. Sidibe tactfully played the role of Precious who deals with horrible experiences by fantasizing herself as a star, when a bad thing happen to her. Although she looks miserable and quite depressing at the beginning, but as the movie progress, she starts to look more attractive and her smile is quite lovable and cute. Mo’Nique is quite scary and punchy in the scene of abuse, chasing Precious with frying pan on her hand, throwing things, and even dropping TV on Precious from the top of the stairs. But she grabbed my heart when she confesses to a social worker the reason why she didn’t intervene when her boyfriend sexually abused Precious and later she started to abuse Precious herself – although she can’t justify her dreadful acts, she is also a victim on her own eyes. Mariah Carey, who is always in a skimpy dress with perfect make-up, performed impressively with no make-up and a husky voice. Although Paula Hatton is too beautiful to be an alternative school teacher in Harlem, but other casts are all perfectly realistic and fit in their roles.

This movie reminds me of my weekly internship experience for one term at the New York’s community college, where Sidibe used to attend. Majority of the students there were minorities and immigrants from a poor family, and they had more or less troubles, though the problems might not be as bad as Precious’. But they were all tough, as Precious and her classmates – they complained or whined sometimes, but at the end, they accepted the situations without being depressed or gloomy and kept going. I learned from them, which is quite useful to cope with hardships, that it is useless to worry about something you cannot control or something already happened – don’t look back and just move on.

A Prophet (Un prophète) @ Barbican Cinema

今日もバービカン・シネマの月曜割引を利用して、先週封切りとなったフランス映画「A Prophet（原題「Un prophète」、「預言者」の意）」を観た。「夜中のピアニスト」「リード・マイ・リップス」等で高い評価を得た、ジャック・オーディアール監督作品で、第62回カンヌ国際映画祭でグランプリを受賞、第53回ロンドン国際映画祭でもBest Film Award（最優秀賞）に輝いた。イギリスやアメリカでも批評家の高い評価を得ており、2月2日に発表されるアカデミー賞外国語映画賞ノミネートの呼び声も高い。

警察官への暴行で6年の刑に処された18歳のマリックは、アラブ系フランス人の孤児。11歳で学校を辞めたため、読み書きもできない。知り合いもなく刑務所に到着したマリックは、他の囚人たちより若く、脆弱に見える。刑務所を牛耳るコルシカ島出身のマフィアのリーダーに刑務所内での殺人を命じられてから、彼らの使い走りとなったマリックは、様々な「任務」をこなすうちに、多くのルールを学び、タフに成長、リーダーの信用を勝ち取る。コルシカン・マフィアに仕えつつ、賢明で向こう見ずなマリックは、イスラム系の囚人たちにもネットワークを広げ、独自の麻薬取引ビジネスを発展、フランスの都市近郊を根城とする移民の裏社会のリーダーに成長していく。

2時間半という上映時間を長く感じないほど、巧みなストーリー展開とスタイリッシュな映像に引き込まれた。何も知らない移民の若者が、自分自身の機転と魅力を頼りに生き延び、暗黒社会のリーダーに成長していくという、いわばサクセスストーリーだが、刑務所の実態やその中に生きる囚人たちの姿、グループ間の抗争等がリアルに描かれ、現実味がある。増え続ける移民、特に旧植民地の北アフリカ系イスラム教徒の移民たちの刑務所での台頭は、貧困や教育の欠如、人種差別等、フランス社会の問題を映し出している。刑務所系映画はあんまり見ないが、この手の映画としては上出来だと思う。ただ、刑務所や厳しい社会を生き抜くためには仕方ないのかもしれないけれども、主人公がやっていることは所詮モラルの欠けた犯罪行為。マリックの成功は、刑務所や裏社会と住む世界が違う私たちにとっては魅惑的かもしれないけれど、いわゆる普通の成功を夢見ることのできない貧しい移民たちの希望の星にはなってほしくない。

We went to see a new French crime film “A Prophet (French: Un prophète)” at Barbican Cinema with Monday discount. A Prophet, the winner of the Grand Prix at 2009 Cannes Film Festival and Best Film Award of the 53rd London Film Festival, is directed by Jacques Audiard, obtained a high recognition with “The Beat that My Heart Skipped (De battre mon cœur s’est arrêté)” and “Read My Lips (Sur mes lèvres)”  This film won a heart of British and American movie critiques, and makes Academy Foreign Film Award shortlist (nomination will be announced on February 2nd).

Found guilty of assault on a policeman and sentenced to six years in prison, an 18-year old French-Arab orphan Malik El Djebena (Tahar Rahim)  can neither read nor write, as he left school at the age of 11. Arriving at the jail alone, he appears younger and more fragile than the other convicts. Cornered by the Corsican Mafia leader César Luciani who rules the prison, he is given a number of “missions” to carry out, toughening him up, and wins the trust of the mafia leader. While he is working for Corsican Mafia, Malik, unafraid and a fast learner, also creates his own network with Muslim inmates as well. Balancing between Corsicans and Muslims, he discreetly develops his drug dealing business and works his way up through the criminal ranks, becoming a leader of all of France’s immigrant suburbs.

The film is so intriguing and absorbing that I didn’t feel its screening time of 150 min at all. The film shows us harsh realities of a life in prison, survival and battle between different groups, without glamor. A rise of Muslim inmates from former French colonies in north Africa, reflect social problems that French society is facing, such as lack of education, poverty and discrimination. I don’t usually fancy a jail movie, but I think A Prophet is thought-provoking, well-made move of its genre. It is a success story that young and naive immigrant teenager survives on his own quick-wittedness and charm, and climbs up to the top of the criminal underworld. Malik’s success story may be fascinating for us who live in a different world from him, but what he does in the movie is opportunistic, immoral, and is a crime. I hope Malik won’t be a role model for many young poor immigrants, who can’t dream of ‘normal’ success in a society where they don’t feel belonging to.

ライアン・ビンガム（ジョージ・クルーニー）は、ネブラスカ州オマハに本社を置く企業のリストラ対象者に解雇を通告する「リストラ宣告人」。また彼が各地で講演する自己啓発スピーチ「What’s In Your Backpack?（あなたのカバンの中身は何？）」では、人との関係や物欲に煩わされない人生哲学を説く。年間322日もアメリカ国内を飛び回るライアンの目標は、アメリカン航空（どーんとロゴが出るので、映画のスポンサーと思われる）のマイレージを1000万マイル貯めること。そんな中、出張先で、同じく出張で各地を飛び回るビジネス・ウーマン、アレックス（ヴェラ・ファーミガ）と出会い、気ままでカジュアルな関係をスタートさせる。ところが、彼の勤める会社では、若い新入社員ナタリー（アナ・ケンドリック）が出張コスト削減のため、インターネット面接で解雇通告することを提案。彼自身がリストラ対象となってしまう。ライアンの上司は、彼女には従業員を解雇するとはどういうことか分かっていないというライアンに、出張にナタリーを同行させるように命令した。旅を続けるうちに、少しずつお互いのことが分かって来た二人だが、ナタリーは、いい歳をして結婚やコミットメントを避け続けるライアンの生き方に疑問を投げかける。ボーイフレンドと一緒にいるために、サンフランシスコからネブラスカくんだりまで移り住んだナタリーだったが、出張中、その彼に携帯メールで別れを告げられ、失意のどん底に陥る。ライアンと、出張で来ていたアレックスは、傷心のナタリーを慰める。ナタリーは、ライアンに、どうしてアレックスとの交際を真剣に考えないのか詰るが、ライアンは自分のポリシーを変えようとしない。そんな中、ナタリーの提案したネット解雇を実践するため、本社に戻るよう連絡があり、二人の旅は終わる。しかし、ライアンはオマハに帰らず、アレックスを誘い、妹の結婚式のためにウィスコンシン州の地元に帰った。煩わしさを嫌い、家族を避け続けてきたライアンだが、母校の高校でアレックスとデートしたり、結婚式当日に怖じ気づいた妹の婚約者の説得に当たったりしているうちに、少しずつ家族や人生の伴侶の大切さに気づくようになった。そして、結婚式が終わり自宅に帰った後、初めて人恋しさを感じたライアンは、講演を投げ出して、アレックスのいるシカゴへと飛ぶ。しかし彼女の自宅を訪ねたライアンは、彼女が既婚者で子供もいることを知ってショックを受ける。その帰途、夢見た1000万マイルを達成し、パイロットやフライト・アテンダントの祝福を受けるが、素直に喜べない。貯めたマイルも、お金がなくて新婚旅行に行けない妹夫婦にプレゼントした。会社に戻った彼は、ボスから、解雇された社員の一人が自殺しナタリーは辞職、インターネット解雇通告も無期延期になったことを告げられた。彼はサンフランシスコに戻って職探しをするナタリーのために、丁寧な推薦状を書く。そして、彼はまたリストラ宣告人として、元の出張漬けの生活に戻るが、以前のように、気ままな独身生活を楽しむことは、もはやできなくなってしまった。。。

昨日発表されたゴールデン・グローブ賞で作品賞、主演男優賞、助演女優賞、脚本賞、監督賞の候補作となり（脚本賞のみ受賞）、アカデミー賞の下馬評も高く、イギリスメディアでも軒並み高い評価を得ているこの作品、最初から最後まで退屈することなく楽しめた。不況、リストラ、独身貴族（死語？）、インターネット社会、有能なビジネス・ウーマン、結婚、企業社会等、現代社会を上手く投影し、かなりの部分で共感できたし、ジョークも冴えていて、深刻な問題も笑いに支えられていて暗くなりすぎない。また若くて恋にも仕事にも理想を持つ23歳のナタリーと、恋愛に現実的な30代のアレックスのコントラストも面白い。そしてその二人に振り回されるクルーニーも、50歳も近いというのに本当にチャーミング。実生活でも独身生活を謳歌する、女たらしで有名なクルーニーも、たまに虚しさを感じたりするのだろうかと思ったりする。そして、最後はお決まりのハッピーエンドにならないところも、ひねくれ者の私の好みに合っている。また、アメリカの大自然や都市の航空写真を使った映画のタイトルデザインも、とても美しく印象に残る。日本では3月20日に公開予定だそうだ。しかし、邦題のセンスのなさ、どうにかならないかしら。

We went to see “Up in the Air” at Barbican Cinema, using Monday discount for £5.50@. Up in the Air, which opened last Friday in UK cinemas, is a comedy drama, directed by Canadian-born Jason Reitman (Academy award nominated Juno and Thank You for Smoking), starring George Clooney. Synopsis below includes a lot of details and ending, so if you haven’t seen the film yet, please feel free to skip the next paragraph.

Ryan Bingham (George Clooney), is a man who makes his living traveling to workplaces around the country and conducting employee layoffs. Ryan also delivers motivational speeches “What’s In Your Backpack?” to encourage a life free of relationships with people and things. Ryan’s life goal is to achieve 10 million frequent flyer miles of American Airlines (I guess that AA is the sponsor of the movie). While traveling, he meets another frequent flyer and business woman, Alex (Vera Farmiga), and they begin a casual relationship. Ryan is called back to his company’s offices in Omaha, Nebraska and finds out that an ambitious young recruit Natalie (Anna Kendrick) is pushing a plan to cut costs by conduct layoffs over the Internet. Ryan argues that Natalie knows nothing about the process of firing people, and his boss assigns him to take Natalie with him on his business travels to show her what it’s like. As they travel together and get to know with each other better, Natalie questions Ryan’s lack of interest in serious relationships, but Ryan is happy to stick to his philosophy. While on the trip, Natalie’s boyfriend dumps her via text message, leaving her devastated – she even moved to Nebraska from San Francisco to be with him. Ryan and Alex, who is there for business, console her and take her with them to crash a conference party at their hotel. The day after, Natalie gets upset to know Ryan’s reluctance to consider a commitment to Alex. Soon after they are called back to Omaha to begin Natalie’s internet layoff program. Instead of returning to Omaha, Ryan decides to invite Alex to his sister’s wedding in Wisconsin. Reunion with his sisters whom he has been avoiding all these years and a happy time with Alex make him realize that there is something more important than being ‘free’ and obsessed with earning mileage. After Ryan comes back home, he feels lonely for the first time. He walks out from his “What’s In Your Backpack?” speech, and flies to see Alex in Chicago. However, when she opens the door, Ryan realizes that she is a married woman with young children. On the flight back home, the crew announces that Ryan has just achieved his 10-million-mile mark, but he cannot get excited by it. Back in Omaha, Ryan calls the airline to transfer miles to his sister and her new husband, who cannot afford to go to honeymoon, so that they’ll be able to fly around the world. Ryan’s boss comes in and tells Ryan that one of the employees he and Natalie fired committed suicide. Natalie has resigned and the company wants to send Ryan back to continue face-to-face layoffs. Ryan writes an impressive letter of recommendation for Natalie for her new job in San Francisco. Ryan goes back to his previous life, but he cannot enjoy it anymore…

Up in the Air is nominated in 5 categories of yesterday’s Golden Globe Awards and also expected to be nominated in Academy Award next March. British media also gives this film a good review, and we enjoyed the film from the beginning to the end, without getting bored for a second. Keywords in modern society, such as recession, layoffs, marriage and relationship, internet, and work, are well incorporated in the film, and I understood and fell empathy for the most of the parts. The real-life humor is superb, and we laughed a lot through the showing time. The contrast between 23 years old Natalie, young and naive, with more realistic and down-to-earth 30s something Alex, makes me reflect myself when I was young and compare to who I am now – I completely agree with Alex now, unfortunately. Cloony, who is almost 50, is still so charming! His role in the film makes me wonder if he, who also enjoy being single, ever feels lonely and empty in his own life as well. I also like the ending which doesn’t fall into the same old happy ending. The opening title sequence using aerial photos of American great natures and cities are so beautiful and impressive, and it is one of my favorites.
