Giuseppe Penone: Spazio di Luce @ Whitechapel Gallery

友人に誘われて、Whitechapel Galleryで展示中のイタリア人アーティスト・Giuseppe Penone（ジュゼッペ・ペノーネ）の作品「Spazio di Luce (Space of Light/光の空間)」を見に行った。

イタリアの芸術運動・アルテ・ポーヴェラのメンバーであるペノーネは、45年以上に渡り、人間と自然との関係を追求。今年のBloomberg Commissionのために、空洞になっている内部が金箔で覆われた、12mもの長さのブロンズ製の木「Spazio di Luce」を制作した。この作品は、本物の木に薄くワックスを塗った彼の1969年の作品「All the Years of the tree plus one」を元に、木の代わりにブロンズを使用。自身が山で見つけてきた木を、ブロンズの型取りをしやすいような大きさにカットし、動物のように木が自身で立つように、余分な枝も取り除いた。最初のレイヤーは筆で、そしてその上から手でワックスを塗ることで、表面には制作に関わった人たちの多くの指紋が、記念のように残っている。内部は、いにしえより、生命の源と考えられていた太陽の光と連想されていた金で彩られていて、入口から見ると、中全体が見渡せるようになっている。

もしこの作品のことを何も知らなければ、本物の木と見まがうかのような素晴らしい出来。木の持つ生命力さえ感じられる気がする。訪れた人の一人は、内側に向かって鼻歌を歌い、その反響を楽しんでいた。とてもダイナミックで、生命力にあふれた、見るものに活力を与えてくれる作品。

I went to see a work by an Italian artist Giuseppe Penone, “Spazio di Luce (Space of Light)” (September 4, 2012 – August 11, 2013), at Whitechapel Gallery.

Penone, a member of the Italian art movement “Arte Povera“, has examined our relationship to nature over the past 45 years. For the latest Bloomberg Commission, he has created a 12-metre bronze cast of a tree with a gleaming gold-leaf interior. This work is a recollection of his work in 1969, “All the Years of the tree plus one“, a tree covered by a thin layer of wax, but this time he has created with bronze instead of a real tree. He found a tree in a mountain, and cut it in pieces in good size for making a cast. He also removed some branches so that the tree can stand by itself, like an animal. He first put a layer of wax with the brush and then by hands over the first layer, so you can see many fingerprints of whom involved in the sculpture’s making like a memory. Void spaces inside of the bronze cast are painted in gold, historically associated with the life-giving forces of light of the sun, and you can see through the entire tree from the entrance of the gallery.

If you have no knowledge about this work, you may mistakenly believe that this is a real tree. You can even feel life force that trees possess. One cheerful visitor was singing into the tree and enjoying the echo of his singing. A truly dynamic work that gives us a life force, and makes us all liven up. Two thumbs up!

Tuscanic Tuscan Café & Deli @ Old Compton Street, SOHO

昨日のLina Storesもそうだけれど、ソーホーを歩いていると、レストラン、カフェ、食料品店、理髪店（ヘアサロンというより昔の散髪屋の風情）など、イタリア系の店を多く見かける。調べてみると、1890年代のRisorgimento（イタリア統一運動）の最中、数多くのイタリア人が政治的混乱を逃れ、ロンドンにやってきたという。クラーケンウェル地区に最大のコミュニティがあったけれど（過去ブログ）、ソーホーにも多く住み着いた。第一次世界大戦後、コミュニティは拡大、1930年代半ばまでに多くのイタリアン・レストランがオープンしたけれど、第二次世界大戦の頃は、ナチスドイツとの同盟関係のため、イタリア人には困難な時代だったそうだ（参照：SOHO memories）。時代は変わり、EUが域内市民に「right to free movement and residence（域内での移動・居住の自由）」を認めて以来、新たにイタリア人、特に職や教育の機会や、窮屈な家族関係や地元からの自由を求めてやってきた若者たちが、数多くロンドンに移り住んでいる。

このTuscanicは、古くからあるカフェやレストランと比べ、よりファッショナブルで洗練された、現代的なスタイルを持ち込む、若い世代の店の一つ。名前が示す通り、Tuscanicは、パニーニ、ピザ、スープ、ハムやサラミ類、チーズなどトスカーナの味が楽しめる。私たちはエスプレッソを飲みにいっただけなので、食べ物の味は分からないが、レビューを見ると「まあまあ〜美味しい」レベルのようだ（Time Out / トリップアドバイザー）。Cantucciが一つついてくるエスプレッソはなかなかだし、チョコレートと生クリームだけで作ったという贅沢なチョコレートケーキ（£5）は美味しい。奥の棚を埋めている、トスカーナ地方から輸入された美味しそうな食料品は、品質は良いかもしれないけれど、かなりいいお値段。食料品なら、向かいにあるお店・I.Camisaがお薦めです。

When walking around in SOHO, I see a lots of Italian restaurants, cafés, groceries and even an old-time barber, including yesterday’s Lina Stores and popular Bar Italia for Serie A fans. So I tried to find out why. According to “SOHO memories” website, there had been a major influx of Italian political refugees to London in the 1860s during Risorgimento (Italian unification). The largest Italian community was formed in the Clerkenwell area (see my past entry), but many also settled in Soho. The decade following the end of the WWI saw a rapid expansion of the Italian community and by the mid 1930s they opened many Italian restaurants, but following WWII period was a difficult time for them, due to the nation’s alliance with Nazi Germany. Now a new generation of Italians have been coming, especially young ones – some of them for job and educational opportunities and others escape from their choking tight-knitted families and communities, since a right to free movement and residence is given to all EU citizens.

This Tuscanic is one of the newcomers who have brought contemporary Italian affairs: sleeker, more stylish and upscale than their predecessors. As the name suggests, Tuscanic offers Tuscan delicacies such as panini, pizza, soups, charcuteries and cheeses, as well as imported food & wines. I went there only for coffee so I am not sure how their food is, but seems OK/Good, according to the reviews though I couldn’t find many (Time Out / tripadvisor). Espresso was good, and came with a piece of biscotti, and their chocolate cake which is made of only chocolate and cream was very good (£5). There was gorgeous looking Tuscan food for sale filled the back shelves, but these are quite expensive though probably in good quality. We would rather buy Italian grocery at I.Camisa (they have good stuffs!) across the street.

Bruno Munari: My Futurist Past @ Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art

イズリントンにあるEstorick Collection of Modern Italian Artで12月23日まで開催中の「Bruno Munari: My Futurist Past」は、多彩な才能を発揮したイタリア人アーティスト＆デザイナー、ブルーノ・ムナーリの、初期から戦後にかけての作品を集めた展覧会。

ムナーリは、「Futurist past」と呼び自身のルーツとする、未来派ムーブメントの中でキャリアをスタート。未来派は、絵画に留まらず、モンタージュ写真、彫刻、グラフィックス、映像、アート理論など、手法や分野を超えたムナーリの作品作りにインスピレーションを与えた。彼の作品は、未来派に留まらず、構成主義、ダダイスム、シュルレアリスムなど様々なアートムーブメントの影響も見て取れる。またムナーリは、イタリア抽象芸術の発展を促し、アートとテクノロジー、創造性、機能性を融合させる「synthesis of arts（アートの統合）」を希求するため、1948年にミラノで興ったイタリアの具体芸術ムーブメント・Movimento Arte Concreta（MAC）の創立メンバーの一人でもある。

この展覧会では、工業的なモビールやオブジェ、おもちゃの猿「Zizi（ジジ）」、戦闘機や産業をテーマにしたモノクロのモンタージュ写真、ボールペンやローマ・オリンピックのポスター、カラフルな壁紙やテキスタイル・デザイン、コラージュ、絵画等々、ムナーリの大いなるクリエイティビティを反映した多種多様な作品を見る事が出来る。それらの作品は、今見てもモダンで遊び心があり、全然時代遅れになっていない。小規模だけれど、お薦めの展覧会。

“Bruno Munari: My Futurist Past” (until December 23, 2012) at Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art in Islington, is the exhibition that traces multi-talented Italian artist and designer, Bruno Munari‘s career from its early years up to the post-war period.

Munari began his career within the Futurist movement, and the roots of his work lay in what he termed his ‘Futurist past’. The movement inspired him to work across a range of media and disciplines from painting to photomontage, sculpture, graphics, film and art theory. Yet his influences were varied, also reflecting the aesthetics and sensibilities of movements such as Constructivism, Dada and Surrealism. He was also a founding member of the Movimento Arte Concreta (MAC), the Italian movement for concrete art established in Milan in 1948. This acted as a catalyst for new developments in Italian abstraction, and aspired to bring about a ‘synthesis of arts’, demonstrating the possibility of a convergence of art and technology, creativity and functionality.

The exhibition shows us that Munari’s multi-faceted creativity in diverse works from industrial-looking mobiles and sculptures to “Zizi the Monkey” child toys, from photomontages of war planes to biro or Rome olympic posters, as well as wallpapers, textile designs, and playful collages, and colourful paintings. And his works are modern, inspiring, fun and not obsolete still now. Recommended.

Concave-convex（「凹凸」/ 1946）。金属製メッシュを使用し注意深く形成した、ムナーリの最初の空間環境作品で、イギリス初公開。

Central Saint Giles Designed by Renzo Piano

イタリア人建築家・Renzo Piano（レンゾ・ピアノ）がデザインし、2010年5月に完成したCentral Saint Giles。レンゾ・ピアノのイギリス初の作品となったこのビル群は、オフィス、住居、ショップ＆レストランの商業スペースを兼ね揃えた複合施設で、外側は13万4千もの光沢のあるテラコッタ・タイルで覆われている。日本の三菱地所も出資しているというこのビル、Tottenham Court Road（トッテナム・コート・ロード）駅東側という好立地ということもあり、住居部分は、ロンドンでの拠点にするため、またロンドンで勉強する子女の住居として、主に香港、シンガポール、マレーシア人に買われたらしい。建物には、屋上緑化をはじめ、環境に優しい様々な仕掛けが施されており、バイオマス・ボイラーは80％の暖房と温水をまかない、冷却タワーから排出される水は灌漑用、そして水洗トイレに再利用されるそうだ。

商業エリアは、最初はテナントも少なく閑散としていたが、またかのジェイミー・オリバーのブリティッシュ・Union Jackをはじめ、ハンバーガー店・Byron、ブラジルのストリートフード・Cabana、イタリアンのZizzi（味はファミレス並みでお勧めしないけど）、スイーツの美味しいカフェ・Peyton & Byrne、そしてヘルシー・ファーストフードを謳うPod（近日オープン）と、チェーン系レストランが徐々にオープン、なかなかの賑わいになった。チェーンばかりであまり特別感はないけれど、ロンドンのど真ん中という立地に加え、レストランは広くて席数が多いので、食事難民になりかけた時に便利かも。

Central Saint Giles is a mixed-use development (residence, office and commercial spaces) on the east of Tottenham Court Road station. Designed by renowned Italian architect Renzo Piano as his first work in UK, the façades of this building complex is covered by 134,000 green, orange, lime and yellow glazed terracotta tiles. Due to its excellent location, many housing units are reported to have been sold to buyers from Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia seeking accommodation for visits to London and for their children who study here. The development has been designed with a number of features intended to reduce its environmental impact: biomass boilers which provide 80% of the heating and hot water; re-use of the water discharged from the cooling tower for irrigation systems and the flushing toilets; planted roof terraces to absorb rainfall.

The commercial spaces were hardly occupied at the beginning, but little by little the spaces have been filled up by restaurants and cafés – Jamie Oliver (again!) ‘s British Union Jack, our favorite hamburger Byron, Brasilian street food Cabana, Zizzi Italian, café with yummy sweets Peyton & Byrne, and ‘healthy’ fast food Pod (opening soon). Mostly chains and nothing special, but the complex is located in the heart of London and the restaurants are large and have lots of seating, so it may be useful when you can’t find any place to eat – or if you are a big fan of Jamie and wants to contribute to his business!

United Artists of Italy @ Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art

イズリントンにある小さなイタリアンアート美術館、Estorick Collection（エストリック・コレクション）の新しい展覧会「United Artists of Italy」（6月22日〜9月4日）は、22人のイタリア人フォトグラファーが撮影した、20世紀イタリア人アーティストの写真約85枚を、1階の2部屋に展示している。Mario Giacomelli（マリオ・ジャコメッリ）、Mimmo Jodice（ミンモ・イョーディチェ）、Gianni Berengo Gardin（ジャンニ・ベレンゴ・ガルディン）など、イタリアを代表する写真家が1960年代以降に撮影した、ジョルジョ・デ・キリコ、ルーチョ・フォンタナ 、ジョルジョ・モランディといったアートの巨匠たちのポートレートは、奥さんや家族と一緒の写真、自分の作品と共に写った写真、おどけた表情、制作から離れくつろぐ姿など、偉大な作品を作り上げたアーティストたちの素顔が垣間見せてくれる。ただ、そのアーティストやその作品を知らなければ、少し退屈かも。。。

Islington’s small Italian art museum, the Estorick Collection‘s new exhibition “United Artists of Italy” presents some 85 portraits of twentieth century Italian artists, taken by 22 leading Italian photographers since 1960s. The portraits of Italian maestro such as Giorgio de Chirico, Lucio Fontana and Giorgio Morandi, by photographers including Mario Giacomelli, Mimmo Jodice and Gianni Berengo Gardin, spotlight artists in real life. You may gain more insight in artists and their art by looking at them being intimate with their wives and families, making funny faces and postures, relaxing away from their work, and being photographed with their artworks. But you may get a bit bored if you don’t know the artists and their works at all…
