BOXPARK “Pop-up Mall” @ Shoreditch High Street

Shoreditch High Street（ショーディッチ・ハイ・ストリート）駅前に、12月3日にオープンする、「世界初のPop-up mall（ポップアップ・ストアのショッピングモール版）」、BOXPARK（ボックス・パーク）。黒く塗られた貨物用コンテナに、60を超えるショップやカフェ、ギャラリーが入居する予定。正式オープン前だけれど、Marimekko（マリメッコ）やThe North Face（ノースフェイス）など、既に開店しているショップもちらほら。オープン日の12月3日には、いくつかのブランドが20% オフになるそう（詳細はウェブサイトで）。

BOXPARKのモットーは、「革新的な店やブランドに、お手頃価格でスペースを提供」すること。コンテナを再利用するため、ローコスト、ローリスクの「box shops」が実現できた。BOXPARKのウェブサイトでは、「繁華街に店を構えたり、メインストリートと雰囲気があわない、小さなブランドやエッジーで革新的な店を育て」、「メジャーなブランドはなし」、「世界中でここにしかない、素晴らしい商品」に出会えるとうたっている。

御託は立派だけれど、テナントリストには、ナイキ、プーマ、ノースフェイス、リーバイス、カルバンクライン、ラコステなど、国際的メガブランドや知られたブランドもたくさんある。もし本当にBOXPARKを特別な場所にしたかったのなら、どこにも展開していない、それこそ世界で唯一のオリジナル店ばかり集めたら良かったのに。不況の折り、なんだかんだ言っても所詮、毎月家賃をきっちり払ってくれるテナントが欲しいと言うことか。

飲食店のリストも何だかぱっとしないけれど、個人的には、微妙に遠くてなかなか行けなかった、ソーホーの人気カフェ、Foxtcroft & Gingerがイーストに来るのは歓迎。

BOXPARK in front of Shoreditch High Street station is “the world’s first pop-up mall” which will be a home to more than 60 fashion, cafés, arts and lifestyle brands, and will officially open in 5 days on December 3rd. Some shops like Marimekko and The North Face already opens its door before the official opening. You may want to take an advantage to shop 20% off selected brands on the opening day (see details on its web).

The BOXPARK philosophy is “to give those innovative retailers space at affordable rates”. By utilising black painted shipping containers, BOXPARK realizes a low cost & low risk ‘box shops’. The website boasts that BOXPARK “nurtures the smaller brands, the edgy and innovative round pegs that can’t afford and won’t fit in to the high street’s square holes” and “No high street retailers”, providing “simply great products that you won’t find anywhere else in the world”.

But really??? I can spot many international mega retailers such as Nike, Puma, The North Face, Levi’s, Calvin Klein etc etc, on its brand directory. If they want to make the space truly special, they should have accepted only independent shops that don’t have any branch anywhere else. Whatever the management brags, I guess at the end, they want model tenants who pay monthly rent without failing, during the recession.

The list of cafés at this moment is not very exciting, but personally I am happy that Foxtcroft & Ginger will come to the east, as SOHO shop is a bit far for us to go often.

fix Café @ Whitecross Street

バービカン・センターと、ロンドン交響楽団のコンサートホールとして使われているSt Luke’s Churchを結ぶ、Whitecross StreetとRoscoe Streetの角に昨年10月オープンしたカフェ・fix。元は、ブリックレーンやGoswell Roadに店舗を持っていたCoffee@という小規模カフェチェーンがあったところで（Coffee@は昨年始めに倒産したよう）、ミッドセンチュリー風でちょっと使い古された感じの、センスのいい家具と、天井の高い広々とした店内は、ランチタイムを過ぎているというのに、かなりの人で埋まっていた。近くで働くクリエーターたちなのか、ノート型パソコンやiphone等のアップルユーザーが多く、また男性率も高い（シングル女性は要チェック？）。ちなみにfixではWIFIが使える。

注文したパニーノ・サンドイッチは、きれいにトーストして、茶色の持ち帰り用紙製パッケージで出してくれ、味もパッケージも合格点。でも、有機栽培フェアトレード（公正取引）のエスプレッソは、ちょっと薄くて味も今イチ。それに、陶器製エスプレッソカップではなく、大きな紙製カップに入ってくるのも、Mにとっては痛いマイナスポイントだ。でも、The London Tea Companyのオーガニック＋フェアトレードのアールグレイは美味しかった。

Café fix was opened last October on Whitecross Street, which connects Barbican Centre and St Luke’s Church (used as a concert hall by London Symphony Orchestra/LSO) , at the corner of Roscoe Street. The place is used to be Coffee@, a mini café chain in London (also on Brick Lane and Goswell Road as well), but the chain went into administration at the beginning of 2009. The spacious café with high ceiling, furnished in mid-century style used furniture, was quite full even after busy lunch time. There are many creator-like Mac users typing apple laptops and playing with iphones (WIFI is available at fix), and more men than women (single women must check it out!). Panino sandwich M ordered, toasted and served in a nice brown take-out paper box, was quite good. But their “organic fairtrade” espresso in a paper cup (which M hates) was watery and tasteless. But my organic+fairtradde Earl Grey tea by The London Tea Company was quite lovely.

ホワイトクロス・ストリートは、毎日ランチ時に、タイ料理やメキシカン等、食べ物の屋台が出るので、ランチを買いにくる近くのオフィスで働く人や近所の住民で賑わう。また木曜、金曜はフードマーケットが開かれている。その中の屋台の１つに、アメリカ・アトランタで行われた、2009年ワールド・バリスタ・チャンピオンシップ（The 2009 World Barista Championship）で優勝した、Gwilym Daviesの屋台もある（彼は花のマーケットで有名なColumbia Road marketにも出店）。いつか世界一の彼のコーヒーを飲んでみたいと思っているのだが、ランチ時は混むので避けているため、まだその機会がない。しかし、コーヒー屋台のオーナーがバリスタの世界チャンピオンなんて、すごいと思いませんか？

Whitecross street hosts a small food market every week day at lunch time and serves a variety of lunch such as Thai or Mexican etc. to the workers at nearby offices and neighbors. A larger food market is held on Thursdays and Fridays, and the street has occasional food festivals. One of the market stool is of  Gwilym Davies, who won the 2009 World Barista Championship (he also has a stool at Columbia Road market). I want to try his “world’s No.1” coffee, but we avoid busy lunch time and we haven’t tried it yet. But isn’t it cool that the coffee vendor on the small street in London is the world barista champion?!
