Artigiano Espresso Bar @ Paternoster Square, St Pauls

tea‘ tea house is gone, and now Artigiano Espresso Bar moved in. Does this symbolize that coffee is taking over tea-drinking nation of Britain?

Independent coffee shop with two venues in London and one coming soon in Exeter, Artigiano says they care about quality of coffee. The coffee is sourced from Origin Coffee roaster from Cornwall. In addition to the regular coffee blend, a seasonal espresso and filter is also on offer. Espresso machine? Custom-painted La Marzocco Linea as you may predict. There serve also ‘artisan’ food  such as sandwiches, soups, pies, salads and some cakes. For some reason, another British’s favorites, craft beers & wines are available. It’s a business!

Ground floor seating is nicer with some precious sunshine in dark November, but was full with people in business suits at 3pm on weekday. They don’t have to be in the office? Downstairs is furnished in the same style, but felt more depressing for some reason. Maybe just psychological. However, this may or may not affect the taste of food and drink. M’s baguette with goat cheese and tomatoes and potato & leek soups were ok but not exciting, and my bacon and egg sandwich and were boring. Their ‘quality’ tea & coffee? Not so impressive…

Caffeine: The Coffee Lover’s Magazine

As well as the growing popularity of East London, demand for quality coffee has been increased in recent years in London. As you know, tea is British proud tradition, and it was hard to find a decent cup of espresso in London about 10 years ago, and nobody knew about now well-liked and also my favorite Flat white. But today you can find it everywhere!

Founded early this year, Caffeine is a free magazine for coffee lovers, focusing on the independent coffee scene in London and other parts of UK. It is available online or print edition as well as their app. But I like their print version – it is all in color and well-designed, and I love the touch and smell of the paper they use. You can tell that the editors of this sleek magazines are really into coffee, and you learn a lot about coffee and London’s café scenes. Interested? Go and pick up your copy at London’s independent coffee shops (Photo above: their 6th & latest Dec/Jan 2013/04 issue).

When we walked around Broadway Market in East London, we found Isle of Olive, a deli & shop selling a variety of authentic Greek food products, sourced from independent producers, agricultural cooperatives and passionate artisans: such as extra virgin olive oils, olives, pastes & tapenade spreads, Feta cheese, honey, Spoon sweets & jams, a selection of natural Greek herbs, spices and herbal teas, preserved vegetables & fishes, dried fruits & nuts, Rusks, and so on. The exterior of the shop looks like a small office in the boring apartment complex and isn’t really appealing, but the inside has a lot of charm; presentation of the products is nice, so as its simple & cute interior. There is also an eating space where you can have some Greek snacks or sweets as well. The shop is not really visible from lively Broadway Market, and hope people can find it so that this little cute place can survive.

I enjoyed Greek food a lot when we traveled to Peloponnese last year. Now I make Greek salad myself, and feta I bought from Isle of Olive was delicious. I was also fascinated to find some Greek herbal teas that rarely seen here. I love Greek Mountain Tea, the infusion made out of the flowers and leaves of the Ironwort plant, which is the most popular herbal tea in Greece, I had it at a small inn in Greece. Other teas are made of the plants I’ve never thought of making a tea out of, such as sage and St John’s Wort. I may need St John’s Wort tea for keeping up my mood during the long, dark winter.

Other than the shop near Broadway Market, Isle of Olive has also a stall on Angel’s Chapel Market every Sunday and at other food events, fairs and festivals, or check their online shop if you prefer.

It’s not Princi, it’s VIVO!

Vivo Bakery-Café-Bar is a new casual Italian eatery on Upper Street, Islington. It opened in August, I believe. Vivo (“lively, vivacious, soulful, vibrant” in Italian) offers all day a selection of Italian prepared dishes using the regional Italian ingredients, such as pizza ‘al taglio’ (rectangular slices), lasagne, a variety of fresh salads, as well as a range of Italian desserts, pastries and sweets. You can see them all showcased on 14-m long granite food counter. You can eat lunch or dinner, have a cup of Neapolitan coffee & dolce, or drink Italian wines with nibbles.

Now I want to ask you a question – does Vivo remind you of something? May be Princi in SOHO? Indeed, their concept of cafeteria style is the same, their interior looks alike, and their range of food is almost identical. Maybe they copied Princi or maybe not. But I don’t care, and probably other customers. There is only one Princi in London so far, and it is much easier for us to come to nearby Angel. Their food is authentic and great as Princi, and it is more relaxed, not like as Princi where is always packed of people and noisy.
