Grain Store Restaurant & Bar @ Granary Square, Kings Cross

キングスクロス駅北側のGranary Squareにある人気カフェ＆レストラン ・Caravan Kings Crossの隣にできたGrain Storeは、クラーケンウェルのZetter Hotel内のレストラン・Bistrot Bruno Loubetの成功の後、フランス人シェフ・Bruno Loubetが、ビジネスパートナーでZetter Hotel & Townhouseのオーナー、Michael BenyonとMark Sainsbury（Exmouth Marketの人気スパニッシュ/北アフリカレストラン・Moroも彼らの手になるそう）と共同で、昨年末にオープンさせた店。元穀物倉だった建物の特徴を生かした内装のこのお店、中は大変広く約140席ほどもあり、外にもテラス席が80席ある。最近のように、夏の気持ちのいい日などにはうってつけだが、屋根やパラソルがないので、日焼け対策は必須。

メニューはクリエイティブというか、料理の味や見た目をイメージするのに想像力が必要。メニューの3分の1はビーガンとベジタリアン向けで、肉や魚も使用してはいるが、野菜が圧倒的に目につく。健康的だが、お腹がぺこぺこの時には不向きかもしれない。私たちの注文した、truffle risotto（トリュフのリゾット。写真下。£10.50）はクリーミーでアルデンテ加減も抜群で美味しい。サイドディッシュのsprouting beans salad （発芽した豆のサラダ。£6.00)は、ただの豆の味だけれど、新鮮でヘルシーなのがプラスか。でも上に乗っているマッシュポテトの薄焼きが美味。

Located side by side to the popular Caravan Kings Cross on Granary Square, Grain Store is a new restaurant by French chef Bruno Loubet with his business partners, Michael Benyon and Mark Sainsbury, original backers of established Moro restaurant (Spanish/North African) on Exmouth Market and the owners of the Zetter Hotel & Townhouse in Clerkenwell, after success of Bistrot Bruno Loubet in the Zetter Hotel. Inside of the Grain Store has hip industrial decor and is massive with around 140 seatings, and there are also 80 terrace seatings – perfect for a summer day like now, though you definitely need a sunscreen cream when because there is no roof or screens over your head.

The menu is quite creative, and you need a lot of imagination to guess how the dish looks & tastes like. Although they use meat and fish as well, vegetables are  exceeded on its menu – about a third of the list is either vegan or vegetarian. Very healthy, but it may not be the best choice when you are starving. Our creamy truffle risotto (£10.50, photo below) was very good, and small sprouting beans salad (£6.00) tasted like, just sprouting beans, but fresh and healthy (of course). The potato wafer on the top of the salad was delicious, and I could eat only that without sprouting beans!

Granary Squareには、地面から直接水が出てくる噴水があり、暑い日には子供たちや犬たちが中に入って涼を取る。ウィンブルドン選手権期間中は、スクリーンで試合観戦も。

Caravan Kings Cross @ Granary Square

クラーケンウェルのExmouth Marketにある人気カフェ＆レストラン・Caravanの新しい支店が、キングスクロス駅の北、Filing Stationの近くのGranary Squareにオープンした。Caravan Kings Crossは、Central Saint Martins College of Art and Designの新校舎で、古い穀物倉を改築したGranary Buildingの中にある。天井の高い、広々とした店内は、配水管が見えるむき出しの木の天井や白く塗られたレンガ壁といったインダストリアルな内装に、家具は暖かさを感じる木のテーブルとパッドのついた布製の椅子と、殺風景にならないように上手くミックスさせ、居心地のいい空間に仕上げている。

朝食からディナーまで、All day diningでいつでも食事が可能。本店と同じく、メニューにはクリエイティブな無国籍風料理が並び、週末はブランチメニューに変わる。私たちのお気にりは、モッツァレラ、トマト、バジルのピッツァ。頑張ってユニークなメニューを考えているシェフには悪いが、私的には奇抜な料理より、このようなシンプルな一皿の方が落ち着くのだ。

Popular venue on hip Exmouth Market in Clerkenwell, Caravan recently opened its new branch on Granary Square in the north of Kings Cross Station, close to Filing Station. Caravan Kings Cross is in the converted Grade II listed Granary Building which houses Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. The restaurant creates great harmony with industrial chic interior with high wooden ceiling with bare pipes and brick walls painted in white, together with warm wooden tables and gray padded chairs.

Caravan Kings Cross offers all day dining from breakfast to dinner. Like its original venue, they offer creative dishes influenced by many different cuisine of the world, and its menu change to brunch menu on weekends. Our favorite dish there is pizza with mozzarella, tomato and basil. I am sorry for a chef who created the unique international menu, but we feel more comfortable with this kind of simple food –maybe we are too conservative with food…

The Filling Station (KXFS) @ King’s Cross

初めてこのThe Filling Station (KXFS)を見かけたのは夜だった。グリーンの大きなネオンサインと赤くライトアップされたファイバーグラスの壁が、まだ再開発途上で何もないこのエリアからKXFSを浮かび上がらせている光景は、幻想的で、不思議とノスタルジックを感じさせた。

キングスクロス駅の北、York Way（ヨークウェイ）とRegent’s Canal（リージェンツ運河）が交わる場所にある、古いガソリンスタンドを改装したKXFSは、期間限定のレストラン＆イベントスペース。約2年後、この建物は再開発の一環で、住宅に生まれ変わるらしい。 →KXFSの詳細

KXFSは今年5月にオープン。中には、ハックニーにあるトレンディなレストラン・Bistrotheque（ビストロテーク）経営者の手による「Calexican（カリフォルニアの健康オタクが好む食材とメキシコ料理が融合した造語）」レストランのShrimpy’s（シュリンピーズ）と、6月〜9月限定営業の屋外バー（KXFS forecourt bar）がある。Shrimpy’sで食事したことはないけれど、9月末で営業が終了する前に、KXFS forecourt barのピッツァを是非紹介したいと思い、このブログを書いている。ここのピッツァは、イースト・ロンドンの幾つかのウィークエンド・マーケットに出店している、Home Slice Pizzaが作っている。メニューは週変わりの3種類のピッツァ（丸ごと£9.00 / スライス£3.00）しかない。飲み物はアルコールのみ、水道水の他はミネラルウォーターもコーヒーもない。支払いは何故かクレジットカードオンリーで、現金不可。スタッフは無愛想だし、全般的にサービスがいいとは言えないんだけれど、それでもここのピッツァ・マルゲリータは食べる価値あり。

The first time I saw The Filling Station (KXFS) was at night. With the light green large neon sign and fibreglass screen lit up in red, it stood out in the dark redevelopment area on construction, next to the Regent’s Canal in the north of King’s Cross station. It was beautiful and I felt nostalgic somehow.

Opened in late May, KXFS houses cozy ‘Calexican‘ restaurant Shrimpy’s, created by people behind Bistrotheque in Hackney, as well as al-fresco KXFS forecourt bar which opens  from June until the end of September. I haven’t tried Shrimpy’s, but I wanted to tell how surprisingly good pizza at KXFS forecourt bar is, before the bar close down. The pizza is prepared by Home Slice Pizza who sells pizza on some weekend markets in East London. They have only 3 kinds of pizza (£9.00@whole / £3.00@slice). Topping changes each week) at KXFS. Overall service is not really great: they oddly accept only card and no cash (so as Shrimpy’s); they have only alcoholic drinks except tap water; and staffs were not really friendly. London’s Train Stations Modernised

今週金曜日から始まるオリンピックに向けて、ロンドンの街も化粧直しがほぼ完了、旅行者の玄関口となる駅も刷新された。ロンドンの主要駅の一つ、キングスクロス駅は、半径54mの半円形の新コンコースが3月19日に完成（写真最上・詳細）。テートモダンの最寄り駅であるブラックフライアーズ駅は、改装工事の後テムズ川をまたぐ初めての駅となり、川の南側・北側（写真中）の両サイドに出入り口ができた。今年2月20日には、改装工事のため3年間近く閉鎖されていた地下鉄の駅が再オープンした（詳細・BBC）。クラーケンウェルにあるファリンドン駅も、昨年12月に、テムズリンクと将来開通予定のクロスレールの新しいチケットホールが完成（写真下）。現在建設中の、ロンドンの東西を結ぶクロスレールの開通とテムズリンク・プログラムの工期終了が予定される2018年には、テムズリンク、クロスレール、地下鉄の3線が交わる唯一の駅となる予定。

見た目が良ければそれでオッケー、とは問屋が下ろさないもので、今週突然の熱波に見舞われたロンドンでは、暑さのせいで電車の運行にも支障が出ている（テレグラフ紙参照）。ただでさえ、混乱が予想されるロンドン、住民のフラストレーションがこれ以上貯まらなければいいのだけれど。

London’s grand make-over is almost finished before the Olympic starting this Friday, including train and underground stations. One of London’s major rail stations, King’s Cross‘s new semi-circular departures concourse with a radius of 54m was opened to the public on March 19 (first photo / more details). Blackfriars station became the first railway station to span the Thames river, and there are entrance on both sides of the river on the north (middle photo) and the south at Bankside, which is a gateway to Tate Modern (more details). In February 20, Blackfriars Tube station has reopened after nearly three years of renovation project (BBC news). Farringdon station in Clerkenwell is currently undergoing the major building work of both the Thameslink Programme and Crossrail network connecting east and west of London. In December 2011, a new ticket hall dedicated to Thameslink and future Crossrail passengers opened. From 2018 when Thameslink Programme and Crossrail are scheduled for completion, Farrindon will be the only station where Thameslink, Crossrail and Underground services meet.

Modernising the stations doesn’t mean trouble-free. With heat-wave affecting London this week has caused some disruptions to rail networks (reference: Telegraph). It is predicted the major disruption to London’s already crowded travel network during the Olympic, and hope there wouldn’t be any further problem to give more frustration to grumpy Londoners!
