Tin Cafè @ Middleton Road / Kingsland Road

昨年のLondon OvergroundのEast London Line（イースト・ロンドン線）開通に伴い、トレンディになりつつあるDalston Junction（ダルストン・ジャンクション）、Haggerston（ハガーストン）エリアに最近オープンしたTin Cafè（ティン・カフェ）。セカンドハンドの家具に古い劇場用の椅子、そしてキュートなおもちゃがならんだ、このカラフルなカフェは、いかにもあの辺りの住民が好きそう。ホットドリンク以外に、メニューから好きな具を3種類、そしてホワイト／ブラウン／ライ麦の中からパンを選ぶと、その場で作ってくれるサンドイッチや、種類は少ないけれどケーキもある。チョコレートケーキが少しドライだったのと、コーヒーが持ち帰りじゃないのに紙コップで出てくるのが、マイナスポイント。→Tin Cafèの可愛いイラストはここ。

Tin Cafè is a new comer in Dalston Junction and Haggerston area, where has been rapidly redeveloped and is becoming a hip area since the London Overground‘s East London Line opened last year. Secondhand furniture, old theater seats, and cute toys all over the café – this is a typical place that East End’s cool residents love. Other than hot drinks, there are also freshly made sandwiches with three ingredients of your choice and white, brown or rye bread. There are also few cakes for people with sweet tooth. Cây Tre SOHO @ Dean Street

ロンドン東部で人気のベトナム料理店Cây Treが西進、ソーホーにもオープンした。オーナーのVietnamese Kitchen Groupは、ホクストンにある本店、ベトナミーズ・レストランが集まるKingsland Road（キングスランド・ロード）のViet Grill、そして最近本店の向かいにオープンした軽食・テークアウトのKêu! báhn mì deli（バインミー）と、ロンドン市内に4店を持つ。

Cây Tre SOHOは、広々として明るく、モダンなインテリアデザインと、従来の冴えないベトナム・レストランの常識を覆すおしゃれさ。でもソーホーという好立地に加え、内装にお金をかけているせいか、値段は他のグループ店に比べると割高。しかも、フォー£8.50（本店£6.50）、生春巻き£4.50（本店£3.50）、Com Saigon£9.50と、いい値段をとる割に量は少なく、キングスランド・ロード価格に慣れている身には不満が残る。グループ店も含め、味も人が絶賛するほど特段美味しいと思わないんだけれど。。。

それ以上にムカついたのは、昼過ぎで店内ガラガラにも関わらず、サービスが悪いこと。他店であれば10分もあれば出てくるフォーが、全部食べ終わっても出て来ない。完璧に忘れ去られていたようだが、文句を言ってもお詫びの言葉もなし。油汚れのついたお勘定の紙挟みもいただけない。

やっぱりベトナミーズはイースト・ロンドンで食べるのが一番だ。

Hoxton’s popular Vietnamese restaurant Cây Tre stretched its hand to the west; the Vietnamese Kitchen Group, the owner of Cây Tre as well as Viet Grill on Kingsland Road, London’s little Saigon, and recently opened Kêu! bánh mì deli, has opened a new venue in SOHO.

Cây Tre SOHO is spacious and cheerful, and its modern and stylish interior defies an image of conventional Vietnamese restaurants in London. But all these niceness, as well as its prime location of central London, cost us. Food are pricier than other sister restaurants: Phở £8.50 (Cây Tre Hoxton: £6.50); summer rolls £4.50 (Cây Tre Hoxton: £3.50); and Com Saigon £9.50, for example. Also the portion were quite small considering the high prices. Obviously value for money at the SOHO branch is unsatisfactory for people like me who are used to reasonable Kingsland Road prices. Though people seem to love the chain, I don’t think the taste of Cây Tre and other group restaurants is so better than other Vietnamese in Kingsland Road…

But the worst experience of the day was not the price or food, but its service. It was late afternoon and almost empty, as you can see in a photo, but M didn’t get his Phở even after I finished all my food an hour ago. Usually it doesn’t take more than 10 minutes to get a bowl of noodles in any places, so obviously the waiter forgot the order. We complained, but no proper apology came back. Also I don’t like that our bill was given inside a fancy paper cover with greasy stains.

I would believe that the best place to eat Vietnamese is the East, after my experience in Cây Tre SOHO…

Be Aware of Charity Scammers

数日前、ロンドンのフリーペーパー「Metro」に、東北大地震＆津波への寄付を誘ったサイバー詐欺を行う不埒な輩がいるという記事が載っていた。Internet Crime Complaint Center（インターネット犯罪苦情センター）によると、フィッシングなどサイバー犯罪を目的とした、170万以上のマルウェア、419の詐欺サイト、そして「Japan tsunami」や「Japan earthquake」を使用した50以上のURLが報告されているという（参照：ubergizmo/MacWorld）。詐欺の報告・被害者支援を行うイギリスの公的機関であるAction Fraudのウェブサイトには、イギリス赤十字社のJapan Tsunami Appealを語る詐欺への警告が掲載されている（参照サイト・イギリス赤十字社による警告）。米ABCニュースやロイター通信は、詐欺にあわないための注意事項をリストアップしているが、要は、メールで送られてきたリンクや電話での勧誘からではなく、信頼できる機関や慈善団体の正規のウェブサイトや電話番号を通じて、または直接出向いて寄付するのが一番安全だろう。人の不幸は金儲けのチャンスと、人の善意につけ込む罰当たりな人たちがいるものだ。

I read about cyber criminals who are cashing in on the Japanese earthquake on London’s free paper Metro few days ago (article). According to Internet Crime Complaint Center, fraudsters have setup more than 1.7 million malware pages, 419 scam sites and over 50 fake domains with “Japan tsunami” or “Japan earthquake” in their URLs (ubergizmo/MacWorld). UK’s national fraud reporting service Action Fraud warns British Red Cross’s Japan Tsunami Appeal Scam (Read more about the Japan Tsunami Appeal fraud on the British Red Cross website). ABC news and Reuters list up tips to avoid those scams, but the safest way is to ignore e-mails and phone calls from total strangers, and either to call up or to visit the trustable charities and organizations or donate on their official websites. It is awful that there are a bunch of evils taking advantages from innocent people’s miseries and goodwill to those suffered!

Viet Grill @ Kingsland Road, Shoreditch

Old Street（オールド・ストリート）駅から徒歩１０分程度、スタイリッシュなバーやクラブが集まるホクストンから程近い、Hackney（ハックニー）のKingsland Road（キングスランド・ロード）南部、オールド・ストリートとの交差点からジェフリー・ミュージムの間には、多くのベトナム料理レストランがある。ヒップなホクストンエリアと比べ、ちょっとうらぶれた感じのキングスランド・ロードのベトナム料理店は、安価で庶民的な感じのところが多い。フォー（汁麺）の有名店Song Que（ソン・ケ） や、美味しいと評判の Viet Hoa（ビエト・ホア）、私の友人お気に入りのLoong Kee（ルーン・キー）などあるが、インテリアで選ぶなら、オールド・ストリートにある人気店、Cay Treの姉妹店で、最近改装された、 Viet Grill（ヴィエト・グリル）。外観はゲーセンか安っぽいナイトクラブという感じだが、内装は最近人気のダークウッドの家具、オリエンタル調とモダンスタイルをミックスし、スタイリッシュに仕上がっている。地下にもテーブルがあるので、大人数のパーティにも最適。写真はランチタイムも終わった日曜午後のものなので、客もまばらだが、夜はかなり繁盛している。お味もなかなかだが、私たちの定番・フォーは、塩かMSG（グルタミン酸ナトリウム）の入れ過ぎか、スープの味が少し濃すぎて、食べた後も喉の乾きを覚えた。ロンドンでは、いまだ、これだ！と思えるフォーに出会っていない。アメリカの地方都市、ジョージア州アトランタで食べたフォーはとても美味しかった。それなのに「国際都市」ロンドンで美味しいフォーが食べられないのは皮肉だ。イギリスでは、MSG（うまみ調味料、味の素）が体に悪いと信じている人も多く、「No MSG」という張り紙のある中華レストランもある。Mもその一人で、アジア系の食品や調味料を買う時に、ラベルを厳しくチェックするので、時に買いたいものが買えず困る。

About 10 minutes walk from the Old street tube station, you see many Vietnamese restaurants on the south part of Kingsland Road in Hackney, between the intersection with Old street and the Jeffrye Museum. In contrast to hip and edgy atmosphere of nearby Hoxton, Kingsland road is less lively and desolated, and many Vietnamese restaurants there are cheap and authentic but not the coolest ones in town. Among many Vietnamese in the area, such as Song Que (popular with its Phở noodle soup), Viet Hoa (with hight reputation), or Loong Kee (my friend’s favorite. cheap & yummy),  Viet Grill may be the place for you, if you are interested in design and trend in London. Recently renovated Viet Grill is a sister restaurant of popular Cay Tre on Old street . The interiors with dark wood furniture and exotic wallpaper is a fusion of oriental taste and modernity, and quite stylish, in compare with the other Vietnamese restaurants on the same street. The restaurant is pretty big and there are also tables downstairs, so it is perfect for a big party as well. The picture above is taken on Sunday afternoon after lunch time and you don’t see many people, but it could be pretty busy at dinner time. The food is decent, but our favorite Vietnamese dish, Phở, was a bit disappointing — too salty or maybe they used too much MSG (?), and we were quite thirsty after the meal. We still can’t find the perfect Phở in London! Ironically, when we went to Atlanta Georgia, we had excellent Phở and ‘world-international-city’ London should be able to offer the same level (!!). In UK, many people believe that MSG is harmful for your health, and you see the sign ‘no MSG’ at the storefront of some Asian restaurants — M is one of them — and he always checks the labels (and always complains) when we shop at an Oriental-Asian foods store — it’s a ‘pain’ sometimes because I can’t buy what I want!
