Timberyard Cafe @ Old Street

人気カフェ・Look Mum No Hands!のすぐそば、オールドストリート沿いに数ヶ月前にできたTimberyard。広々としていて明るく、今風のインテリアでリラックスした雰囲気。地上・地下2フロアを有するこの大きなスペースで、人々は読書をしたり、コンピューターに向かったり、ミーティングをしたり、友人とお喋りしたりと、思い思いに時を過ごしている。Timberyardでは、特別にセレクトした生産者から食材やクオリティの高い紅茶、コーヒーを仕入れている。ラ・マルゾッコでJabberwockyブレンドのエスプレッソを入れ、そして紅茶を頼むと最も美味しく飲めるよう、最適時間をセットしたタイマーが一緒に出てくる。まさに優等生的なカフェだ。

私の初めての来店時は、非の打ち所はなかったのだが、私より一足先にランチしに来ているMは、ここのサンドイッチは普通、感動するほど美味しくはないと言う。私はお茶しただけなので何とも言えないのだが、確かにカウンターに並べられた食べ物を見ただけでは、特にそそられない。よっぽどお腹が空いて死にそうな時ならともかく、グラノーラとかポリッジ、キッシュとか食べないし、サンドイッチもここののようにパンにハムとかチーズとかを挟んだだけのものより、トーストした温かいサンドイッチの方が好き。スウィーツも、ブラウニーとかクッキーとか焼菓子系ばかりで、ケーキ好きの私の食指は動かない。私的にはこのカフェはお茶利用のみ、かな。

Another picture-perfect cafe on Old Street, few steps away from popular cafe Look Mum No Hands!. Hip, spacious, bright, and laid-back. In this large two-storey space, people enjoy reading, working, chatting, relaxing, meditating or whatever they want to do. Timberyard is a model cafe, offering speciality tea, coffee and artisan food sourced from carefully chosen producers. They brew their Jabberwocky blend espresso with La Marzocco with love, and serve teas with timer to ensure the perfect infusion.

Nothing to complain during my first trip to Timberyard. However, M who went there alone before (without telling me!), told me that their sandwich was OK, not great. I can’t judge myself, as I’ve never had food there. I like the place. Their tea & coffee are decent. But I am not sure about the food, judging by just looking at it. I don’t eat granolas, porridges, quiches and salads. I prefer toasties instead of just ham & cheese in between ‘artisan’ bread. And I am not a big brownie or cookie eater, unless I am starving. It is just my personal preference, and I rather enjoy just a cup of tea and ambience there.

Duchy Originals “from Waitrose”

私たちの行きつけのスーパーはウェイトローズなのだが、今まで買っていた、ウェイトローズ・ブランドのオーガニック牛乳が、最近、「Duchy Originals（ダッチー・オリジナル）」ブランドに取って代わったのに気づいた。調べてみたら、2009年9月にDuchy Originals社はウェイトローズとの包括提携を発表、2010年8月に実施されたのだそうだ。この提携によると、イギリス国内において、商品の製造から流通・販売までウェイトローズが手がけ、名前もDuchy OriginalsからDuchy Originals from Waitroseに変更。商品数も以前の200から、500アイテムにまで増やす計画だそうだ。

ダッチー・オリジナル (Duchy Originals) 社は、環境保護やオーガニック（有機栽培）に熱心なチャールズ王太子によって1990年に設立された、高級有機食品ブランド。Duchy of Cornwall（コーンウォール公爵）の称号を持つチャールズ王太子所有のDuchy（王族公領）をその名に冠し、そのロゴもコーンウォール公の紋章から取られている。クッキーやビスケット、ジャムやマーマレード、肉・魚類、デザート、水、スープ、ドレッシング、ヘア・ボディケアなど多岐に渡る商品は、主にウェイトローズで取り扱われているけれど、Boothsというスーパー（聞いた事ないけれど）や独立系高級食料品店でも販売されている。ウェイトローズと提携はしたけれど、チャールズ王太子は引き続きブランド経営に参画し、そのロイヤルティ（商標権使用料）は引き続き、王太子の創設した慈善団体・The Prince’s Charities Foundationに寄付される。

ダッチー・オリジナルの製品は、チャールズ王太子の会社という事で話の種になるので、海外へのお土産に重宝する。私たちの御用達は缶入りのHighland Shortbread（ハイランド・ショートブレッド）。スコットランドの伝統的お菓子だけれど、イギリス中で食べられるポピュラーなお菓子だし、材料には、王太子が所有するハイグローブの農場で穫れた小麦やオート麦を使用している。また王太子が描いた、イギリス王室の夏の避暑地であるスコットランドのバルモラル城の水彩画を使った、クラシックのデザインの缶は、食べ終わった後も使える。£6.99とリーズナブルなのに高級感もあるし、是非お薦め。

Recently I recognized that our favorite supermarket, Waitrose‘s Organic milk range has been replaced from “Waitrose Organic Fresh Milk” to “Duchy Originals from Waitrose”. I searched Wikipedia and found out that Duchy Originals had agreed an exclusive deal with Waitrose, for Waitrose to originate, manufacture, distribute and sell Duchy products, and this came into effect from this August. The products were relaunched under the new name “Duchy Originals from Waitrose” (formerly Duchy Originals), and the product range will be expand to around 500 from the previous range of around 200.

Duchy Originals is a brand of organic food and was originally set up in 1990 by Charles, Prince of Wales, who has been an advocator of organic food and environmental issues, and named after the Duchy of Cornwall estates that are held in trust by the Prince of Wales (Duchy means the territory of a duke or duchess). The products, including biscuits & snacks, preserves, meat, poultry & fish, desserts, bottled waters, soups and condiments & dressings, as well as hair & body care, are sold mainly in Waitrose in UK, but also in Booths supermarkets (I’ve never heard of it though) and small independent food stores. The Prince of Wales continue his involvement with the brand after the company’s deal with Waitrose, and the royalties is donated to charity The Prince’s Charities Foundation as before.

We often buy Duchy Originals products for souvenirs to abroad, as this is Prince Charles’ company and we can talk about it. Our pick for a souvenir is Highland Shortbread Tin. Shortbread is a traditional Scottish biscuit, but also popular in other parts of UK. Duchy Originals’ Highland shortbread is made using wheat and oats from the Duchy’s farm at Highgrove royal estate.  The shortbread is in a classic design tin box, decorated with a watercolour, painted by Prince Charles, of the Balmoral estate in Scotland, and you can reuse the tin after you finish the biscuits. The price is quite reasonable at £6.99, but it looks expensive – highly recommended!

Konditor & Cook: a Sweet Paradise

地下鉄Chancery Lane駅からGrays Inn Roadを少し北に行ったところにあるKonditor & Cookは、スウィーツ好きにはたまらないカフェ。Borough MarketやSOHOにあるミニシアター系映画館・Curzon SOHO等、現在ロンドンに５店舗ある。全てのスウィーツは、Free Range（放し飼い）の卵や天然のバター等、高品質の材料を使って手作りされている。バースデー・ケーキやウェディング・ケーキの注文も受け付けており、カラフルでキュートなMagic Cakeには特別メッセージも入れられる。

ここ、Chancery Lane店では、イートインもできるけれど、中と外に数席しかなくて、運が悪いと座れない時もある。店頭には美味しそうなケーキが並び、クッキーやチョコレート類も充実している。サンドイッチもあるんだけれど、ラップに無造作に包まれていて、きれいに包装されたお菓子類に比べると、かなり見劣りするかな。今は季節柄、ハロウィーンのカボチャのデザインのチョコレート等も売っている。Konditorの色とりどりのケーキやお菓子類、見ているだけでハッピーな気分になれます。

Konditor & Cook, going a bit north from Chancery Lane tube station on Grays Inn Road, is the cafe that you cannot resist if you have a sweet tooth. Currently, there are five shops in London, including the ones in Borough Market and Curzon SOHO, an art-house movie theater chain in SOHO. All cakes are handmade, using high quality ingredients such as free range-eggs and natural butter. You can order birthday cakes and wedding cakes, as well as special messages on their colorful and cute Magic Cakes.

At the Chancery Lane shop, you can eat-in, but you may not find a seat if you are unlucky, as there are only few seats inside and outside. There are gorgeous cakes displayed at the store front, as well as a wide variety of cookies and sweets on the counter and at the shelves. They have sandwiches too, wrapped roughly with cling films, and it doesn’t look as good as beautifully wrapped confectionaries. You can find now seasonable Halloween pumpkin chocolates etc. Just looking at Konditor & Cook’s mouthwatering sweets make everyone feel happy.

Napket | Snob food @ Regent Street

Napket（ナプケット）は、キャッチフレーズ「Snob Food（スノッブ・フード）」の通り、高級感を売り物にしたサンドイッチ／カフェ・チェーン。チェルシーのキングス・ロードにある第一号店に、オープンしたての頃行ったことがあるんだけれど、うちから遠いのでその存在をすっかり忘れていた。最近、リージェント・ストリートからVigo Streetを少し入ったところにもできたのを、偶然発見。黒を基調とした家具類、アンティーク調の椅子、シャンデリアと少し暗めの店内、書斎風に古い本を並べた本棚（本は単なる飾りで、まっすぐに並ぶように裏側が裁断されている）と、優雅なインテリアが高級エリアのメイフェアにマッチしている。オーダーメードの高級紳士服店が並ぶサヴィル・ロウや、ショッピングエリアのリージェント・ストリートに近いという場所柄、スーツ姿の紳士やショッピングバッグをさげた買い物客が多い。値段は少々高めだけれど、見た目より良心的。イート・インの場合、厳選された材料を使って作られた、美味しくてボリュームあるサンドイッチ、パスタ、サラダ等が6ポンド以下でいただける。入口近くにあるベーカリー・カウンターでは、パンやクロワッサン、マフィン、クッキー等も売られている。ピカデリー・サーカスやリージェント・ストリートあたりには、ちょっと気が利いた手軽なカフェが意外とないので、重宝しそう。

Napket, as its catchphrase “Snob Food”, is a posh cafe/sandwich chain in London. We went to their first cafe on King’s Road in Chelsea just after it was opened, but it is kind of far from us and we haven’t come back since then. We found its Regent branch the other day by chance, on Vigo Street, just off Regent Street. The chic black interior with black wooden tables, antique (style?) chairs and sofas, chandeliers and bookshelves filled with old books (cut on the back to make them all fit & straight – therefore not for reading), matches the upscale Mayfair area where the cafe is located. With its location, the customers at Napket are mainly ‘gentlemen’ in well-tailored suits from nearby Saville Row – famous for its traditional men’s bespoke tailoring – and people with shopping bags from a shoppers’ mecca Regent Street. The price is a bit higher than other cafes, but it’s not as bad as it looks. For eat-in, you can have fairly large sandwiches, pasta and salads made of high quality ingredients for less than £6.00. The bakery counter near the entrance sells bread, croissants, muffins and cookies etc. Surprisingly there are not many cool & casual cafes around Piccadilly Circus and Regent Street – Napket will be great when you want to have a break while shopping.
