Marks & Spencer Scottish Shortbread Tin

最近、マークス＆スペンサーのストアブランドのパッケージデザインが可愛い（また追々紹介します）。ちょっとレトロなデザインのクリスマス用缶入りビスケット各種（参考：gumo gazette）もよくできていて、プレゼントやパーティの手みやげに最適。この、ロンドン名物2階建てバスをモチーフにした缶入りビスケットは、スコットランド発祥の伝統菓子・Shortbread（ショートブレッド）3種27個入りで、お値段は£8。イラストを描いたのは、イラストレーターのPhil Hankinson（フィル・ハンキンソン）氏。そのレトロでクラシックな画風は、チェコスロバキアの絵本作家・Miroslav Sasek（ミロスラフ・サセック）の名作「This is London」（1959年）を彷彿させる。中のビスケットを食べ終わっても、小物入れとして使えそう。ロンドンのお土産にもぴったり。

Recently package design of Marks & Spencer‘s store brands has improved (I will talk more later). Retro-feel Christmas biscuit tins is well-done (reference: gumo gazette), and is good for a present and gift. This tin box with London’s famous double-decker contains a selection of 27 shortbreads in 3 varieties, and costs £8. The package was designed by illustrator Phil Hankinson, and the his style resembles the old classic “This is London” (1959) by Czech illustrator and auther, Miroslav Sasek. You can re-use the tin box after finishing all biscuits, and this is a great souvenir of London as well.

Visit London Christmas Competitions

ロンドン公式ウェブサイト・Visit London（日本語ページあり）が、Advent Calendar（アドベント・カレンダー）方式に、12月1日から25日まで日替わりで、ホテル宿泊やシアターチケット、ショッピング・バウチャー等が当たる懸賞を実施中。懸賞・プレゼント応募を見逃せない私は、毎日チェックしては、めぼしいプレゼントにクリック応募している。サイトのキュートなイラストを描いたのは、St Martin’s College出身のTina Mansuwanさん。バンコクやブルネイ、ストックホルム、ロンドンと様々な街で育ち、現在はバンコク在住とのこと。ロシアのフォークアートや日本のグラフィックスに影響を受けたそうで、そのポップで可愛いイラストは、確かに日本人が好きそう。

残念ながら懸賞への応募資格はイギリス在住者に限られているけれど、このウェブサイトで、ロンドンのクリスマス気分をちょっと味わってみては？

London’s official guide website Visit London is running a virtual advent calendar from 1 – 25 December, with a daily prize such as theatre tickets, overnight hotel stays and shopping experiences. I am the person who can’t miss prizes and competitions, and everyday I check the site and click & apply a prize I fancy. The illustration for the advent calendar is designed by Tina Mansuwan, a graduate of St Martin’s College who grew up in Bangkok, Brunei, Stockholm and London. Now back in Bangkok, she is inspired by Central Asian and Russian folk art and Japanese graphics – I thought this cute & pop illustration is typical of what Japanese girls like.

Unfortunately the competitions is open to UK residents only, but why not to enjoy a little bit of London’s Christmas atmosphere by visiting the site?

英大手デパート・John Lewis（ジョン・ルイス）がつくった、今年のクリスマスシーズンのTVコマーシャルが大好評。制作費用なんと600万ポンド、約250人の中から選ばれた7歳のスコットランド人少年、Lewis McGowan（ルイス・マッゴーワン）くんを起用したこの1分30秒のこのコマーシャル、現在YouTubeで300万回以上の再生回数を記録する大ヒットとなった。人気ビデオにつきものの、パロディー動画も登場。スタンリー・キューブリックの「Shining（シャイニング）」のテーマ曲を使ったり、ホラー映画の予告に似せたりと、ホラー系に作り替えたものが話題を呼んだ（参考：サン紙）。

むすっとした顔で、今か今かとクリスマスを待つルイスくん。そして待ちに待ったクリスマスの朝、ベッド近くに積まれた自分自身へのプレゼントも開けず、真っ先にに両親の元へクリスマスプレゼントを届けに走っていく、というストーリー。ルイスくんは可愛いけど、私的には少し長すぎて退屈。そして見え見えのお涙頂戴演出にも、ちょっと興醒めする。

UK’s department store chain, John Lewis‘s Christmas TV advert 2011 has become a big sensation. This 90-second advert which cost £6 million to make, has been viewed over 3 million times on YouTube so far. Spoof videos have also popped up online, which  is more like a piece of horror movie or its trailer, using the same visuals but with scary music such as the theme of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (the Sun article).

In the advert, 7-year-old Scottish boy Lewis McGowan, who was chosen from 250 candidates, is impatiently counting down the time with frown face for Christmas day to arrive. When it finally comes, the he rushes out from his bed, and runs to fetch the gift he has for his parents, without opening his own presents stucked up next his bed. Yes he is cute, but for me, it is a bit too long and boring. Also the tear-jerking formula, adorable little boy doing a sweet thing, makes me fed up!

長いクリスマス・ホリデーがようやく終わった。今年はクリスマスが土曜日に当たったので、クリスマスの休日が27日（月曜日）に、そしてボクシング・デーが28日（火曜日）にずれ込んだからだ。ようやく通常の生活に戻ると思いきや、数日するとまたまた新年の休日（1日〜3日）になってしまうので、その間ずっと閉まっているお店やレストランも多い。→イギリスの休日（バンク・ホリデー）はこちらで。

上のビデオは、今日、BBCで放映されるドキュメンタリー「Poler Bear – Spy on the Ice」から抜粋されたもの。撮影に使われた「spy cams（スパイカメラ）」を、好奇心から近づいたホッキョクグマが、見事に破壊する姿が妙に可愛い。つまらない番組が幅を利かせているホリデー・シーズン中、少しは楽しめそうな、数少ない番組。

テレビもつまらないし、ホリデーシーズンでちゃんと機能していないロンドンを、明日からしばらく抜け出します。1月10日はブログを再開しようと思っていますので、皆さん、良い年末年始をお過ごしくださいね！

Finally long Christmas weekend was over. Christmas day was on Saturday this year, so Monday 27th became Christmas day holiday and Tuesday 28th was Boxing Day holiday subsequently. But the business here is still far from normal and many business and restaurants remain closed, as New Year’s weekend (1st to 3rd) will come in few days time. → check here for UK bank holidays

The video above is an excerpt of the BBC documentary “Poler Bear – Spy on the Ice” starts soon today. Curiosity-ridden polar bears destroy disguised hi-tech “spy cams” – it is cute and funny. Among all the boring TV programs and films during this holiday season, this documentary is one of the few programs enjoyable to see.

TV is full of trash this time and the city is not fully functioning, therefore we will get out of the town for a while from tomorrow. I will restart this blog on January 10th (hopefully). Have a happy new year everyone!
