New Row Coffee @ Covent Garden

New Row Coffeeは、中にテーブルが2つ、外にベンチが1つあるだけの小さなカフェ。観光客で混雑するコヴェントガーデンに程近い、New Rowという小さな通りに面している。コヴェントガーデンエリアで美味しいコーヒーが味わえる数少ない店で、コーヒー好きに必須のカフェガイド「London Coffee Guide 2012」にも、ロンドンのベストコーヒー100店の一つとして掲載されている。

良質のコーヒー豆を提供するUnion Hand-Roasted Coffeeから仕入れた豆で淹れたコーヒーの他、カウンターに並んだケーキやクロワッサン等のペイストリー類、サンドイッチなど、朝食＆ランチがいただける。中にいたお客の一人に、「ここのケーキはとても美味しいから」と勧められたけれど、あいにくMeat Marketで食べたばかりでお腹いっぱい。残念！

New Row Coffee is a tiny café with two tables inside and one bench outside, on a small street of New Row, just a stone’s throw away from busy Covent Garden. This is one of the few places where you can have a decent cup of coffee in Covent Garden area. It is guaranteed by the London Coffee Guide 2012, London’s coffee lover’s bible, as one of the 100 best coffee venues in London.

The café serves breakfast and lunch as well as a cup of established Union Hand-Roasted Coffee – you can see pastries, cakes, and sandwiches on the counter. One customer told us that the cakes were excellent, and we really wanted to try, but unfortunately we were completely full after Meat Market…

Two Days to the Big Royal Wedding

ウィリアム王子とケイト・ミドルトンの結婚式が2日後にせまり、ロンドンはすっかりお祭り気分。ユニオン・ジャックがあちこちにひるがえり、便乗商品が店頭を飾り、新聞・雑誌の紙面を賑わせている。お土産物からハンドメイドまで、大体はお祝いムードあふれるものだけれど（テレグラフ紙記事：写真右端をクリックすると他の写真も表示される/ Visit London official shop / Etsy / John Lewis）、中には意地悪なものも（Royal Wedding Sick Bag: 乗り物酔い用の袋）。コベントガーデンでは、水を差すようにユニオン・ジャックをあしらった商品の販売が禁止され、テナントの怒りを買っている（イブニング・スタンダード記事）。

でも私たちは明日から旅行。幸か不幸か？ロイヤル・ウェディングも、庶民のストリート・パーティも体験出来ない（ま、世界中のテレビで中継されると思うけれど）。その間ブログもお休みします。多分5月9日に再開すると思いますので、またその後覗いてみてくださいね。

The Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton is only two days to go. London is in a festival mood, Union Jack flying all over the town and the wedding memorabilia cover shops and media spreads. The Royal Wedding gifts are mostly favourable (Telegraph article: click the right edge of the photo to see more / Visit London official shop / Etsy / John Lewis), but some are a bit mean (Royal Wedding Sick Bag). Contrary to the trend, traders at Covent Garden are outraged at “ludicrous” new regulations banning them from selling items displaying the Union Jack (Evening Standard article).

We will be on a trip from tomorrow, so we won’t be able to experience the Royal Wedding and any of street parties expected to be held in London, fortunately or unfortunately – but we won’t miss a lot as the wedding will be aired all over the world for sure. I will be off from the blog for a while and will resume probably from May 9th – so please come back later!

Enjoy Street Ping-Pong in London this Summer

先週、Mがラッセル・スクウェア近くにあるショッピングセンター・Brunswick Centreから、携帯で送ってきた写真。これは、7月24日〜8月22日までの約一ヶ月間、観光地や広場、ショッピングセンター、駅などロンドンの様々な場所にに100台の卓球台が置かれ、誰でも無料でピンポンを楽しめるという、「Ping! London」というイベントの一環で、ラケットとピンポン球が備え付けてある。テート・モダン、テート・ブリテン、バービカン・センター、コベントガーデン、大英図書館、セント・パンクラス駅、ハイドパーク、リージェンツ・パーク、ロンドン自然史博物館、ヒースロー空港ターミナル3等々、多くのメジャーなスポットに設置されているので、ロンドンの住人なら目にした事があるかもしれない（設置場所はここ）。

エキセントリックな言動で有名なボリス・ジョンソン市長は、卓球王国・中国で開催された北京オリンピックの閉会式で、次回の2012年ロンドン・オリンピックのホストとして、「卓球の発祥の地・イギリスに、ピンポンが帰ってくる！」とスピーチし、話題になった（参照記事）。市長によると、卓球は、19世紀にイングランドのダイニング・テーブルで考案され、「whiff-whaff」と呼ばれていたという。後に市長の発言は、世界で最も古いスポーツ用品製造業者「Jacques London」で卓球の「創始者」一家を自認する一族の末裔に否定され、論争の的となった（参照記事）。

その真偽の程は不明だが、日の長いロンドンの夏、パブで消費したビールのカロリー分、卓球に汗流すのいいかもしれない。

M sent me the mobile photo above from Brunswick Shopping Centre near Russell Square last week. This is a part of four-week event called “Ping! London” (July 24 to August 22), that 100 ping-pong tables pop up across London’s landmarks, squares, shopping centres, estates, offices and train stations. Bats and balls are supplied, and anyone can play for free. The locations include Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Barbican Centre, Covent Garden, British Library, St. Pancras International Station, Hyde Park, Regent’s Park, Natural History Museum, and even Heathrow’s Terminal 3 – anyone who live in London may have seen it somewhere (here for all locations).

Well-known eccentric London Mayor Boris Johnson stunned UK with an astonishing speech at the Beijing Olympic closing ceremony, declaring ‘Ping pong is coming home!’, at the heart of Ping-Pong empire of the world (see details here). According to the mayor, ping-pong was invented on the dining tables of England in the 19th century, and it was called “whiff whaff”. Later his claim has been attacked by the descendants of the world’s oldest sporting and games manufacturer “Jacques London“, who claim that their Jaques family was first to codify the game (see details here).

I am not sure what is the truth, but whatever the truth, it may be a good idea to play ping-pong to shed some calories off from your body, after having a pint of beer at a pub, under long daylight during London’s short but nice summer.

Canela Brazilian / Portuguese Café / Bar @ Covent Garden

コベントガーデンに程近い、Upper Saint Martin’s Lane中程にあるラウンドアバウト近くにある、ポルトガル／ブラジリアン・カフェ／バー、Canela（カネラ）。このコヴェント・ガーデン店の他、カーナビー・ストリートにもお店がある。

黒木のインテリアでまとめられた小さな店内はシックでカジュアル、アットホームな感じで居心地がいい。フード類は、黒豆と肉を煮込んだシチューをご飯にをかけた、国民食とも言えるFeijoada（フェジョアーダ）やPão de queijo（ポン・デ・ケイジョ、チーズパン）、チョリソなどと言ったポルトガル料理や、サンドイッチ、サラダなど。デザートは、今やロンドンのいろんなカフェで見かけるPastel de Nata（パステル・デ・ナタ）のほか、CanelaならではのBrigadeiro（ブラジルのチョコレート・ボール）、Quindim（キンジン）など、ちょっと変わったものもいただける。

Canela is a Brazilian / Portuguese Café / Bar near a roundabout on Upper Saint Martin’s Lane in Covent Garden. They also have a branch near Carnaby Street as well.

Ccasual-chic interior of the café, decorated with black wooden tables and wine shelves, is cozy and you’ll feel comfortable like at home. Their Portuguese/Brazilian-inspired food ranges from the national dish Feijoada (a stew of beans with meats, served with rice), chorizo, and Pão de queijo (cheese breads), to more ordinary sandwiches and salads etc. On their desert menu, you find Pastel de Nata (custard tarts), now quite popular throughout London, or more rare Brazilian sweets such as Brigadeiro (chocolate balls) and Quindim.

温めてクリームをかけていただく、Banana cinnamon cake（バナナとシナモンのケーキ）に、Galão（ガラォン、ポルトガル風グラス入りカフェオレ）を注文。エスポレッソにシナモンスティックがついてくるのが、Canela風。でもブラジル人のウェイトレスのお姉さんにケーキの注文を忘れられていて、せっかくのコーヒーが冷めてしまったのが残念。

We ordered warm Banana cinnamon cake is served with cream and cinnamon powder, espresso, served with cinnamon stick, and Portuguese style caffè latte Galão. It was a shame that a Brazilian waitress forgot my cake and Galão got cold while I was waiting…

Art & Design Bookshops in London: Artwords and Magma

昨日、ブロードウェイ・マーケットのl’eau à LA BOUCHE（ロアラブッシュ）に行った時に、「Artwords Bookshop」が最近オープンしたのに気づいた。Artwords Bookshopは、コンテンポラリー・ビジュアルアート系の本や雑誌、ビデオなどを扱うショップで、Rivington PlaceがあるショーディッチのRivington Streetに、一号店がある。数坪ほどの狭いRivington Street店の方に比べ、明るく、すっきりとデザインされたブロードウェイ・マーケット店の方は、ゆったりしていて、ゆっくり本が探せる。

When we went to l’eau à LA BOUCHE on Broadway Market, we found a new art bookshop “Artwords Bookshop” on the same street. Artwords Bookshop is the specialist for books, magazines and videos on the contemporary visual arts. There is its first shop on Rivington Street in Shoreditch, near Rivington Place. In compare to the tiny shop on Rivington street, the one on Broadway Market is more spacious and light with its white interior.

もう１つのロンドンのアート・デザイン系ブックショップは、アーティストやクリエーターなら誰でも知ってるMagma books。クラーケンウェルのClerkenwell RoadとコベントガーデンのEarlham Streetにショップを持ち、コベントガーデン店の数軒先に、デザイン雑貨のセレクトショップもある。またロンドン以外に、マンチェスターに店舗がある他、オンライン・ショッピングも展開している。私たちは、家から近くて、店も広くて、客が少ないクラーケンウェルのショップに、たまに行く。

Another art & design book shop in London is Magma books, the famous shop that any artists and creators know. There is a shop on Clerkenwell Road in Clerkenwell, as well as on Earlham Street in Covent Garden. Magma also has a design product shop few steps away from the Covent Garden shop on the same street, and also a branch in Manchester as well. We prefer the Clerkenwell shop because it is bigger and less people, and closer from home.

一般的に、これらの小規模独立系書店を取り巻く状況は厳しい。テレグラフ紙の記事によると、昨年、10店のうち1店の独立系書店が閉店。1週間に3店が閉店した計算になるそうだ。不況の影響もあるけれど、それよりも大手スーパーのテスコやアマゾンの安売り価格に太刀打ちできないのが、大きな原因だ。イギリスも日本のように、小売店と出版社が本を定価で売ることを合意した「Net Book Agreement (NBA)」があったが、1995年に廃止され、値下げできる体力のある大手書店やスーパーが断然有利になった。また来月イギリスでも発売になるアップル社のiPadなど、電子ブックの普及も大きな痛手になるだろう。

お客は独立系書店に本を買いにくるのではなく、本を品定めだけして、実際は安くで買える大手書店やスーパー、またオンラインで買うのだそうだ。本のバーコードをスキャンすると、最安の価格とショップを割り出してくれるiphoneのアプリ「RedLaser」もある。私たちも急ぎでない限り、本はアマゾンで買うし（ものによると半額ぐらいになる）、iPhoneにはRedLaserもインストールしてある。このような小さな書店の苦境に同情するが、消費者が品揃えが豊富で、値段が安い方に流れるのは仕方がないし、私たちだけが小さな書店で本を買っても、一人の力ではどうしようもない。独立系書店は専門書やなかなか手に入らない本に特化するなど、商品のラインナップに工夫を凝らすか、何かプラスαをつけないと生き残れなくなっている。そして、より多くの人をターゲットに出来るように、オンライン・ショップも必須だ。大変だけれど、時代の変化についていくしかない。

Circumstance of these independent shops is quite tough now in UK. According to an article in the Telegraph, one in 10 independent bookshops closed last year, at a rate of three a week. Recession is one of the reason, but the evils that let these small shops go bust are the big retailers such as Tesco or Amazon that sell largely discounted book. After the abolition of the Net Book Agreement (NBA) in 1995, which was an arrangement between publishers and booksellers that ensured books could not be offered at discounted prices (I believe Japan still has similar rule), the big retailers can cut the price big with the selling and negotiation power with the publishers and have been in much better positions than small bookshops. Emerging of e-book market and electronic book readers, including Apple’s iPad, could be a final blow to them.

Customers come to a bookshop to find what they want, but buy with cheaper price at a big bookshop, supermarket or online. iPhone app “RedLaser” lets you scan a book’s bar code and find the cheapest price. We also buy books at Amazon if the price is much cheaper and when we are not in hurry, and RedLaser is on our iPhone as well. I feel sorry for the small shops, but it is capitalism that customers go for cheaper prices, and we can’t help these shops by buying books from them, if we are alone. There are not much choice for the small independent shops to survive – either to specialize in one area such as Magma or Artwords, to stock up rare books that are not easy to find, or to give an extra service that other shops don’t. Also going online is a must to reach out to more customers. Unfortunately, the time has changed and small business has to adopt it…
