Panino Giusto @ Royal Exchange, Bank

ミラノに本店を置くイタリアのサンドイッチ・チェーン、Panino Giustoが4月22日、ロンドン一号店をバンク駅近くにあるRoyal Exchange Buildings（旧王立取引所）内にオープンさせた。1979年にミラノに最初の店を構えたPanino Giustoは、現在ミラノを中心にイタリアに22店、東京・横浜に計5店を展開。多様なパニーニ・サンドイッチの他、Stuzzico（アペタイザー、食欲をそそるの意）、サラダ、ハムやサラミ、チーズ、数は少ないが肉料理、そしてセレクトされたイタリアンワインが楽しめる（イタリア語メニュー）。

地上・地階計140席有する、この高級感漂うレストラン、月曜から金曜まで、朝11時半から夜中12時まで開店している。金融街のど真ん中という場所柄、スーツ姿の人たちが多い。でも、そのいかにも高そうな外観にも関わらず、お値段はリーズナブルで、パニーニは大体£8以下。注文した、ローストビーフがたっぷり入ったMontaguパニーノが£6.80、モッツァレラチーズとドライトマトのカプレーゼは£5.80（写真下）。それに比べると、カモミールティー£3がちょっと高過ぎるように感じてしまう。

Milan-based Italian sandwich chain, Panino Giusto opened its first restaurant in London on April 22 at Royal Exchange Buildings near Bank (Panino Giusto blog). Panino Giusto now has 22 restaurants in Italy (17 in Milan) and 5 in Japan (I didn’t know that), after 30 years of opening its first restaurant in Milan in 1979. You can enjoy a wide range of toasted panini sandwiches, cold & hot dishes such as Stuzzico (appetiser, stimulate an appetite in Italian), charcuteries and cheeses, salad, and few meat dishes as well as selected Italian wines (menu in Italian only). 

This elegant two-floor restaurant can host 140 diners, and opens from 11.30am to midnight, Monday to Friday. Located in the heart of the financial heart of London, the restaurant obviously targets city business people. But on contrary to its posh look, their freshly made food is rather reasonable, and their panini cost no more than £8 except few. Montagu panino with roast beef cost £6.80, and generous portion of Caprese with Mozzarella cheese and san dried tomato is £6.80 (photo below). So chamomile tea for £3.00 seems pricey in compare.

The Association Coffee @ Creechurch Lane, City of London

カフェイン中毒のMは、通常、カフェブログやら新聞やら雑誌やら、色んなところから新しいカフェ情報を入手してくる。でもこのAssociationは、滅多に訪れないシティで偶然見つけた。オフィス街のシティより、ヒップなイーストロンドンの方が似合うこの洒落たカフェ、ビジネスピープルたちにも大人気のようだ。

ウェブサイトによると、Associationはコーヒーに情熱を注いでおり、通常のエスプレッソブレンドの他、ほぼ週変わりの季節に応じたブレンドが楽しめる。また、Stove Top（イタリアのマキネッタのように、直火で抽出するコーヒーメーカー）、French Press、Filter Coffeeなど抽出法に応じたコーヒー豆や、家庭用コーヒー抽出用器具も販売している。コーヒー以外にも、紅茶、見た目はぱっとしないが（失礼）良質の材料で作ったペイストリーやケーキ、サンドイッチなどもある（menu / 仕入れ先リスト）。コーヒーへの並々ならぬこだわりは感じられるが、残念ながら私たちのエスプレッソとフラット・ホワイトは平均並み。フラット・ホワイトは、ラテかと思うほどコーヒーが薄く、しかも少しぬるかい。ただ今時のインテリアの店内は広々としていて、木製ボードにのせて食べ物をサーブするなど、プレゼンテーションも気が利いている。シティはチェーンのコーヒー店ばかりで、美味しいコーヒーが飲める独立系のカフェがほとんどないので、Associationは貴重な存在。シティに行く際は、再挑戦してみたい。

Normally caffeine junkie M finds a new cafe from all kinds of sources such as cafe blogs, newspapers & magazines etc, but we found the Association by chance, when we walked through the City, where we rarely visit. This good looking cafe looks more fitting in hip East London, rather than corporate City of London, but was very popular among business people.

According to their website, the Association is all about coffee, and offer a range of seasonal coffees as well as their regular espresso. They also sell bags of coffee for for a Stove Top, a French Press or a Filter Coffee, as well as a range of home brewing equipment. Aside from coffee, they also offer teas, simple pastries and cakes, and sandwiches (menu), using the best of ingredients (suppliers list), although they don’t have big variety. Sounds great, and I feel a lot of passion from them. However, we found their coffee (espresso & flat white) were average. My flat white was not strong enough but more like latte, and was not hot enough… But the place is chic & spacious, and their presentation of food on a wood board is very cute. We will try again when we go to the City, where there are very few great independent coffee shops other than chains.

City of London Community Toilet Scheme

ふと見たカフェに貼ってあったこのステッカー。何だろうと思って調べてみたら、これはシティ・オブ・ロンドンのCommunity Toilet Scheme (CTS)の一環で、域内の参加店が店内のトイレを一般に開放する代わりに、シティが「contribution」を与える仕組み。詳細は書いていないから、contributionが何を意味するのか不明だが、対価＝お金を支払うということか？参加店は、状況によっては、トイレ利用を断る権利を有するともある。怪しい人たちにはトイレは貸さないということか。トイレ利用の際、何かを買ったり注文したりしなくても良い前提ではあるけれど、利用した人たちは罪悪感からか、何かを買ったりする人も少なからずいるらしいので、店にとってもメリットはあるようだ。参加店は、シティ・オブ・ロンドンのウェブサイトでチェック可能。

I saw this sticker on one of restauranst in the City. I am curious about what it is and checked it out. According to the City of London website, City’s Community Toilet Scheme (CTS) is to provide toilet facilities available to the public with partnership with local businesses, supplementing the City’s facilities. In exchange for providing free access to toilets to the public, the City pays a ‘contribution’ to participating businesses, though they still retains the right to refuse admission in exceptional circumstances. There is no details of ‘contribution’ means, but maybe money? Anyways, this scheme brings win-win to everyone involved. It is reported that people using their toilets often do make a purchase, though they don’t need to buy anything. You can check participating businesses on their websites.

Dogs Trust Float @ Lord Mayor’s Show 2012

先週土曜日の11月8日、この巨大な黄色い犬がオールドストリートからエンジェルを走っていくのを見かけた。調べてみると、これは慈善団体・Dogs Trustの山車で、その日行われたLord Mayor’s Showに参加した帰りだったようだ。

1215年に始まったとされるLord Mayor’s Showは、主催者曰く「the oldest, longest, grandest and most popular civic procession in the world（世界で最も古く、最も豪華で、最も人気のある市と市民の行進）」だそうだ。このLord Mayorとは、シティ・オブ・ロンドン（シティ）の長で名誉職であるロンドン市長のこと。現在ボリス・ジョンソンがその任を務める、シティを含む大ロンドンの行政の長である大ロンドン市長とは違う。新しいLord Mayorは毎年選ばれ、11月第二土曜日に、その就任を祝うLord Mayor Showが開催される。宣誓を終えた後、Lord Mayorはシティから約3.5マイル（約5.63km）のパレードに参加、王立裁判所で「国王」への忠誠を誓う。今年は、22のマーチングバンド、125頭の馬、18台のヴィンテージ車、21台の車両、6500人以上がパレードに参加したそうだ。

この幅5m・高さ3.2m・重さ150kgの世界最大の「首振り犬（→参照）」「Dogcilla」は、Dogs Trustの里親探しセンターに関心を持ってもらうために昨年作られ、現在は、ロンドン西部・EalingのHanger Laneの近くの、A40道上にあるVanguardビルのてっぺんに置かれているそう。

We saw this gigantic yellow dog near Old Street and we chased it with M’s moped on City Road to take some photos. After a little bit of research, I found out that this was a Dogs Trust’s float, participated in the procession of Lord Mayor’s Show 2012 on November 8th, and I happened to see it on their way back, though I didn’t see it parading.

The Lord Mayor’s Show is “the oldest, longest, grandest and most popular civic procession in the world,” started in 1215. The “Lord Mayor” is the mayor of City of London, and is not the “Mayor of London” which has existed only since 2000 now and Boris Johnson is currently on the position that takes care of Greater London, including the City. A new Lord Mayor is appointed every year, and the this Lord Mayor Show celebrates his inauguration and is held on the second Saturday in November. On the day after being sworn in, the Lord Mayor participate in a procession from the City of London to the Royal Courts of Justice where the Lord Mayor swears his allegiance to the Crown. Over 6500 people, 22 marching bands, 125 horses, 18 vintage cars, and 21 carriages paraded over three and a half miles long on this year’s procession.

This 5m long / 3.2m high / 15okg weight world’s largest nodding dog called “Dogcilla” was made to draw attention to their  rehoming centres last year, and you can see it on the Vanguard building on A40 near Hanger Lane, Ealing in West London.

“Renew” Recycle Bins in the Square Mile

「Renew」は、金融街・シティに約100台設置された、LCDスクリーンが両側に備え付けられたリサイクル用ゴミ箱。爆弾の衝撃にも耐えうる構造の、このつや消しの施されたいかついゴミ箱は、なんと1台3万ポンド。ちなみに、80年代にIRAの爆弾テロがロンドンの経済の中心・シティ等にも及んだこと、またアメリカ同時多発テロ事件やロンドン同時爆破事件以降、テロの脅威が増した事もあり、シティ一帯に置かれているRenewも爆弾仕様になっている。このRenewは、ゴミ箱としての機能だけじゃなく、両側のスクリーンには、平日の午前6時〜午後11時59分まで、経済や一般ニュース、天気予報、スポーツ、ファッション、旅行、アート・娯楽関係の情報に加え、チューブ（地下鉄）やNHS等のローカル情報、緊急時には速報、そして広告が随時流されている。→詳細（英語）

1月26日から徐々に設置が始まっていたにも関わらず、今まで全く気づかなかった。スクリーンは低い位置にあるのでちょっと見にくいけれど、信号やバス待ち、友人などとの待ち合わせの際の暇つぶしにいいかも。Renewには現在、ニューヨークやシンガポール、日本からも引き合いが来ているらしい。

‘Renew‘ is a recycling bin with LCD screens on both sides, placed about 100 within Square Mile. This glossy bomb-proof heavy-duty pods costing £30,000, not only swallow recycle materials such as paper, cans and plastic bottles, but also entertain passersby with a variety of information displayed on the screens. Renew transmits between 6am and 23:59pm each market day, and includes breaking financial and corporate news, general news headlines, weather forecasts and other topics including sport, fashion, travel, the arts and entertainment, as well as updates during emergencies and local information such as Tube and NHS, and of course advertisements as well.  →further details

Although being installed initially from January 26, I’ve never noticed Renew. It is a bit too hard to look at the screen as the screen is low, especially for tall men, but it would help you kill your time while waiting at a traffic light, a bus or your friend, in case you forget your smartphone with you. It is said that other cities abroad such as New York, Singapore and Tokyo are interested in the concept of Renew.
