Kiosk Takeaway Sandwich Shop @ King’s Cross Station

キングス・クロス駅に隣接するGreat Northern Hotelのテナントで、西側コンコース側にあるテークアウト用サンドイッチショップ・KIOSK。ヒップなデザインが目を引くこのお店は、その場でスライスしたローストターキー（七面鳥）やポーク、ソルトビーフ等をこだわりのパンに挟んだグルメサンドイッチが売り。朝11時前まではクロワッサンやマフィン、ポリッジ、そしてブレックファスト・サンドイッチと朝食用メニューがある。こだわりついでに、コーヒーもMonmouth coffeeのもの。パッケージデザインもいい感じ（ウェブ参照）。まだここのサンドイッチは食べた事がないのだけれど、もしキングス・クロス駅から電車に乗る事があれば是非一度トライしてみたい。

KIOSK, built into the ground floor of the Great Northern Hotel and opened to the Western Concourse at King’s Cross Station, is a hip take-away shop that grabbed our eyes when passing by. They sell hot roast meat sandwiches with freshly hand-carved turkey, pork or salt-beef in between artisan breads, as well as breakfast favorites such as bacon or sausage sandwiches, croissants, muffins and porridge. Monmouth coffee is also available to go. I love their package design! (see their website).I haven’t tried their ‘gourmet’ sandwiches yet, but it’s on my to-eat list if we have a chance to travel from King’s Cross station one day.

Sweet Thursday Pizzeria & Wine Shop @ South Gate Road, De Beauvoir Town

   

Mは大のピッツァ好き。見た目のいい（これも肝心）ピッツェリアを見ると、チェックしないではいられない。先日North Gate roadを愛車のベスパで走っていた時も「pizzeria & wine shop」の文字を見かけ、このSweet Thursday前で即座にブレーキ。数日後、味試しに店を訪れた。

入口にはワインショップがあり、奥がレトロモダン風インテリアのピッツェリアになっている。一番奥のグループ用の大テーブルは、中庭に面していて陽当たりもいい。オーナーはこのDe Beauvoir地区で生まれ育ったイギリス人で、イタリア人ではないが、オープンキッチンで働くスタッフは皆イタリア人。しかも、年季の入ってそうな中年のピッツァ職人がいて、期待が高まる。

ここのピッツァは、ナポリから取り寄せた食材と伝統的な方法で作るナポリスタイルで、イートイン＆テークアウトどちらもオッケー。メニューにのっているピッツァの他、自分で好きなトッピングを組み合わせることも出来る。私たちはマルゲリータにアンチョビをトッピングした、いつもの一品を注文。窯から出て来たばかりの熱々ピッツァは見た目も味も素晴らしい。生地はもちっとしていて、美味く溶け合った完熟トマトソースとモッツアレラも美味。でもこれは最初の訪問の話。2回目に行った時は、例のピッツァ職人は見当たらず、味も落ちている。寿司と同じで、ピッツァも簡単そうに見えるけれど、おいしいピッツァはピッツァイオーロ（ピッツァ職人）の腕次第なのだ。今度行く時は、彼がいるか外からコッソリ確かめてからにしなければ。

ワインは飲んではいないが、メニューや店先に並ぶワインを見る限り、セレクションもなかなか良さそう。ハウスワインも、シチリア産オーガニックワインをリーズナブルな値段で出している（1リットル入りカラフェ: 白£16.50 / 赤£20）。またメニューになくても、店で売っているワインなら、少額のコルク代を払えば店内で飲める。ピッツェリアの客は、同日ならワインショップで売っているワインが10％割引の特典も。ワインティスティング等のイベントも開催しているので、ご興味のある方はどうぞ。

M is a big pizza fan. He has to take a look, every time he finds a good looking pizzeria. When we were driving through North Gate road, he immediately spotted this “pizzeria & wine shop” Sweet Thursday and stopped his vespa right away. After few days later, we visited Sweet Thursday to try their pizza.

Front is the wine shop and pizzeria space, decorated in funky retro-modern style,  on the back. There is a big table for a larger group, facing a nice & quiet small garden. Owners are not Italians but De Beauvoir natives, but the staffs seen in the open kitchen were all Italians, including an experienced-looking middle age pizzaiolo.

They serve Napoli style pizza for eat-in or takeaway, made using the ingredients from Naples with traditional pizza making techniques. You can either choose topping from their menu or create your own. We ordered classic margherita with extra anchovies topping, as we always do (we are very conservative about pizza). It was looking good, and tasted good – chewy dough with mozzarella melting nicely into sweet tomato sauces. It was nice, at least on the first visit. We went there for the second time, the master pizzaiola was nowhere to be seen. And pizza was not as good as the first one… I realize that pizza looks easy to make, but pizzaiolo’s skill is definitely needed for a great pizza. And the same for sushi, just an small addition. So please don’t believe that YO! sushi or Tesco’s sushi is authentic and as good as the counterparts in Japan! Anyway, we have to check if the pizzaiola is there next time we go.

As for wine, they seem to have good selection of wines, and even their house wines are organic from Sicily (1 litre carafe: £16.50 for white / £20 for red). Apart from their menu, you can also have any bottle at their wine shop with a small corkage fee. If you eat at the restaurant, you can have 10% off the price of wine in their shop that day. They also host wine tasting events as well, if you are interested.

Westfield Stratford City

オリンピックのシンクロデュエット決勝を見に行った帰り、オリンピックパーク横にある、昨年9月オープンのヨーロッパ最大のショッピングモール・Westfield Stratford Cityに立ち寄った（過去エントリー参照）。オリンピック開催中だけあって、人混みがすごい。でも、観客がオリンピックにお金を使い過ぎて財布のひもを締めているせいか不況のせいか、各店舗内は意外と空いている。買い物は我慢できても空腹は我慢できないのか、フードコートはさすがに席の奪い合い状態。ショップはありきたりのチェーン店が多いけれど、フードコートは、マクドナルドやスターバックスと言った大型チェーンだけでなく、世界各国の料理を取り揃え、Rosa’sやComptoir Libanaisなどの人気店も入居している。

結局この日は観戦疲れ・人疲れして全部見れなかったので、パラリンピック終了後、人気の少ない平日に一度ゆっくり見て回りたい。

I stopped by at the Europe’s biggest shopping center, Westfield Stratford City (see past entry), after attending the synchronized swimming duet final during the Olympics. There was a lot of people, but inside of the stores was rather empty, probably due to the recession or visitors trying to save money after spending a lot for visiting the Olympics. However, there was a war over empty seats here and there at its food court, as people cannot live without eating. The majority of shops at Westfield were boring chains, but it’s worth trying their food court where you can eat wide range of western and ethnic food at London’s popular eateries such as Rosa’s and Comptoir Libanais, not only at mega chains like McDonald’s and Starbucks.

I couldn’t fully enjoy the mall because I was exhausted from watching the game and the large crowd, but I will try again when is less busy during weekdays after the Paralympics.

ストラトフォード駅とWestfieldの間にある、250mの長さのチタン製モニュメント「Stratford Shoal（ストラトフォードの魚群）」。このチタンは何と日本製（読売新聞）/ 250 metre-long titanium sculpture “Stratford Shoal“, placed in between Westfield and Stratford Station.

The London 2012 Shop

これがロンドン・オリンピックのグッズが買える公式オンラインショップ。でも正直言って、凡庸なウェブデザインもグッズも全然気に入らない。カクカクしたオリンピックロゴや全く可愛くないマスコットが嫌いなせいもあるけれど、グッズはデザインも良くないし、見た目が安っぽい（値段は安くないのに）。

それに比べ、Team GB（オリンピック・イギリス代表）のライオンの頭を模したロゴやウェブサイトは悪くない。オリンピック委員会も「cool（格好いい）」なロンドンの名に恥じないよう、デザインにもっと気を遣うべきだった。

This is the London 2012 online shop for official Olympic goods. To be honest, I am not very impressed by the merchandise or its mediocre web design. Not only because I don’t like the angular Olympic logo and scary mascots, but also because those products are badly designed and look cheap (though price is not cheap).

In compare, the Team GB’s lion head logo and its website look much better than the one of London 2012 committee – they should have tried harder to keep up the reputation of ‘cool’ London!

Good-bye to DailyCandy London…

DailyCandyからのメールマガジンでロンドン情報をチェックするのが、毎朝の日課だった（過去のエントリー参照）。それが一昨日の閏日に、最後のメルマガが届いた。さよならの言葉だけで、理由も説明もなし。一体何があったのか。インターネットで探しても何の手がかりもなし。でもDailyCandyのロンドン版ウェブサイトはまだ健在。ロンドンに関するものではないけれど、3月1日・2日付で映画とアメリカのオンライン・ショップの情報がアップデートされている。

DailyCandyは、新しいレストランや素敵なショップのオープンや面白そうなイベント、可愛いモノなど、ロンドンに関する色々なことを教えてくれた。そしてDailyCandyのおかげで、ロンドンのことをもっと知ることが出来た。DailyCandyからの、キュートなイラスト入りのメールを開ける楽しみがなくなってしまったのは、ちょっと淋しい。

To check a daily newsletter from DailyCandy is one of the first thing I do every morning and what is new in town (see my past entry). However, just the day before yesterday on a leap day, I received the last one, saying good-bye from DailyCandy without a reason or explanation, all of a sudden. I have no clue what happened to DailyCandy – no information I found on the internet. However, the website of DailyCandy London edition is still working, and there are some up-to-date online articles of March 1 & 2, though these are not London-specific info, but about a film and US online shops.

DailyCandy gave me a lot of useful information about London, such as opening of chic restaurants and cool shops, fun events and some cute stuffs to buy. Very sad. Thank you DailyCandy, you helped me a lot to know London better, and made me adore this city!
