Giorgio Morandi: Lines of Poetry @ Estorick Collection

アーティストでジョルジョ・モランディの大ファンである友人と、エンジェルにあるEstorick Collection of Modern Italian Artに「Giorgio Morandi: Lines of Poetry」展（1月16日〜4月7日）を見に行った。

モランディの出身地ボローニャの美術館・Galleria d’Arte Maggioreと共に企画されたこの展覧会は、1920〜60年代にかけて制作された約80のエッチング版画と、数点の水彩画、ドローイングを展示している。彼の作品のテーマは主に静物画と風景画。いくつかの花を描いた作品やポートレートを除き、テーブルの上に置かれた複数の瓶、水差し、碗などを描いた静物画（多少配置を変えながらも、同じオブジェが繰り返し登場）か、スタジオと住居があったボローニャと毎年避暑に訪れていたGrizzana（グリッツァーナ）の風景画がほとんど。

「Lines of Poetry」は、モノクロのエッチングやドローイング、淡い色調の水彩画など、小さいサイズの作品が1階の2部屋にこじんまり収まった（上の階にも数点展示）、かなり地味な展覧会だけれど、彼の作品の持つ静謐さと長閑けさが、妙に心地がいい。しかし、モランディ展で感じた穏やかさは、同時開催中のけばけばしい色調の「Alberto Di Fabio: Intervention」展（1月16日〜4月7日）によって完全に邪魔された。タイトルの「Intervention（干渉）」も、皮肉に聞こえる。まったく相容れない展覧会を一緒にしないでほしいものだ。

I went to see this “Giorgio Morandi: Lines of Poetry” exhibition (Jan 16 – Apr 7) at Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art in Angel, with my artist friend who is a big fun of Giorgio Morandi.

Organised in collaboration with Galleria d’Arte Maggiore in Bologna, Morandi’s hometown, Lines of Poetry focuses on works on paper and includes Morandi’s some 80 etchings, as well as few watercolours and sketches, from 1920’s to 60s. The subjects of his works are pretty much restricted in still lifes, mainly same familiar bottles and vases on a table, and landscapes of Bologna and Grizzana where he visited every year during summer, but the exhibition also has a small number of works on flowers and portraits.

Lines of Poetry is rather understated exhibition with mainly monochrome etchings and pencil sketches and very few watercolours in undertones, in small sizes, in only two rooms on the ground floor (+ few works upstairs). But the tranquility and repose of his works are somehow comfortable and pleasant. However, peaceful moment I had been enjoying was disrupted by a concurrent exhibition, flashy and intense “Alberto Di Fabio: Intervention” (Feb 13 – Apr 7)… What an ironic title. They shouldn’t have mixed those incompatible exhibitions together!

United Artists of Italy @ Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art

イズリントンにある小さなイタリアンアート美術館、Estorick Collection（エストリック・コレクション）の新しい展覧会「United Artists of Italy」（6月22日〜9月4日）は、22人のイタリア人フォトグラファーが撮影した、20世紀イタリア人アーティストの写真約85枚を、1階の2部屋に展示している。Mario Giacomelli（マリオ・ジャコメッリ）、Mimmo Jodice（ミンモ・イョーディチェ）、Gianni Berengo Gardin（ジャンニ・ベレンゴ・ガルディン）など、イタリアを代表する写真家が1960年代以降に撮影した、ジョルジョ・デ・キリコ、ルーチョ・フォンタナ 、ジョルジョ・モランディといったアートの巨匠たちのポートレートは、奥さんや家族と一緒の写真、自分の作品と共に写った写真、おどけた表情、制作から離れくつろぐ姿など、偉大な作品を作り上げたアーティストたちの素顔が垣間見せてくれる。ただ、そのアーティストやその作品を知らなければ、少し退屈かも。。。

Islington’s small Italian art museum, the Estorick Collection‘s new exhibition “United Artists of Italy” presents some 85 portraits of twentieth century Italian artists, taken by 22 leading Italian photographers since 1960s. The portraits of Italian maestro such as Giorgio de Chirico, Lucio Fontana and Giorgio Morandi, by photographers including Mario Giacomelli, Mimmo Jodice and Gianni Berengo Gardin, spotlight artists in real life. You may gain more insight in artists and their art by looking at them being intimate with their wives and families, making funny faces and postures, relaxing away from their work, and being photographed with their artworks. But you may get a bit bored if you don’t know the artists and their works at all…

Double Portrait: Ida Barbarigo and Zoran Music @ Estorick Collection

The Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art（エストリック・コレクション）は、イズンリントンの閑静な住宅街にあるCanonbury Squareに面した、イタリアのモダンアートを扱う小さな美術館。Estorick Collectionは、アメリカ人社会学者で作家のEric Estorickによって設立、彼が死の直前に設立したEric and Salome Estorick Foundationに自分のイタリア・アートのコレクションを寄付した。1998年に現在地に美術館がオープン。コレクションの柱は、ジャコモ・バッラやウンベルト・ボッチョーニ、カルロ・カッラ、ジーノ・セヴェリーニ、ルイージ・ルッソロといった未来派の作品だが、ジョルジョ・デ・キリコ、アメデオ・モディリアーニ、ジョルジョ・モランディ、マリオ・シローニ、マリノ・マリーニなどイタリア人アーティストのフィギュラティヴ・アートや彫刻作品も保有する。

現在は、「Double Portrait: Ida Barbarigo and Zoran Music」展（写真上から2、3番目）を開催中。コレクションの創始者であるエストリック夫妻とも交友のあった、オーストリア＝ハンガリー帝国スロヴェニア生まれでベニスを拠点にした画家・Zoran Mušič（ゾラン・ムジチ）とその妻でベニス生まれの画家・
Ida Barbarigo（イダ・バルバリゴ）の回顧展で、絵画、写真、手紙などが展示されている（参照：artdaily）。

また、1階にあるイタリアン・カフェで、日替わりランチやイタリアン・コーヒー、ケーキを注文し、建物の外の庭にあるテーブルで頂くのもお薦め。カフェだけなら入場料不要です。

The Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art is a small museum devoted to modern Italian art, facing Canonbury Square in Islington‘s quiet residential area. The Estorick Collection was founded by American sociologist and writer Eric Estorick. He set up the Eric and Salome Estorick Foundation
 prior to his death, to which he donated all his Italian works. The museum opened in 1998 in the current location, and the core of the collection is its Futurist works by Futurism’s main protagonists such as Giacomo Balla, Umberto Boccioni, Carlo Carrà, Gino Severini, Luigi Russolo and Ardengo Soffici, as well as figurative art and sculpture by Giorgio de Chirico, Amedeo Modigliani, Giorgio Morandi, Mario Sironi and Marino Marini, dating from 1890 to the 1950s.

Current exhibition at the museum is “Double Portrait: Ida Barbarigo and Zoran Music” (2nd and 3rd photos), a retrospective of husband and wife artists based in Venice and close friends of Eric and Salome Estorick, Slovenian-born survivor of a Nazi concentration camp Zoran Mušič and Venetian Ida Barbarigo, including paintings, photographs and ephemera (reference: artdaily).

Having lunch and Italian coffee with cake from an Italian café on the ground floor
at outdoor tables in their cozy garden  is another way to enjoy the museum – and it is free entrance for the café only!
