Graffiti @ Shoreditch / Brick Lane

バラク・オバマが大統領に当選した2008年選挙キャンペーンで使用され、世界的に有名になった「Hope ポスター」のデザインで知られるアメリカ人グラフィックデザイナー＆アーティスト・Shepard Fairey（シェパード・フェアリー）の作品。ブリック・レーンのOld Truman Brewery内のStolenSpaceギャラリーで、11月4日まで開催中の自身のエキシビジョン「Sound and Vision」に併せて、ショーディッチ・ハイストリートのEbor Streetに描かれた。同時に、Old Truman Brewery近くのCorbet PlaceとBateman’s Rowの２カ所にもグラフィティを残している。この作品は、「路上アートは無料であるべき」との彼の信念を表しているらしい。

American artist Shepard Fairey, whose “Hope” poster for the 2008 Barack Obama election campaign became a global sensation, created this work in Ebor Street, together with two other works in Corbet Place (near the Old Truman Brewery) and Bateman’s Row, to coincide with his exhibition “Sound and Vision” (until Nov 4) at the StolenSpace Gallery in the Old Truman Brewery. This work conveys his belief, “art should be free on the street for the public”.

Although I couldn’t find any information of this graffiti in Ely’s Yard behind Old Truman Brewery, but I believe this is a work by Abdullah Mohammed Alshehri, a Saudi street artist based in Riyadh, depicting Sarah Attar who is the first female track & field athlete covering her hair, representing Saudi Arabia in 2012 London Olympic (reference: the Guardian). Born in the US with American mother and Saudi father, Attar has dual citizenship but wanted to represent Saudi Arabia at the Olympics as a way of inspiring women.

はっきりとした情報は得られなかったけれど、Old Truman Breweryの裏のEly’s Yardにあるこのグラフィティは、恐らくサウジアラビア人ストリートアーティスト・Abdullah Mohammed Alshehriのもの。今年夏に開催されたロンドンオリンピックで、サウジアラビア初の女性陸上選手として、イスラム教の規律に則り髪を覆ったユニフォームでオリンピックスタジアムに登場し、脚光を浴びたSarah Attar選手を描いている（参照：the Guardian）。アメリカ人の母とサウジアラビア人の父のもとにアメリカで生まれた二重国籍者の彼女は、イスラム人女性を勇気づけるため、サウジアラビア代表としてオリンピック出場を望んだという。

上の「Attar」の向かいにある、「Vihls」の愛称で知られるポルトガル人ストリートアーティスト・Alexandre FartoがOrelha Negraとコラボして制作したグラフィティ。Vihlsは、壁の漆喰やコンクリートを少しずつ削っていって作品を創り出す、「Scratching the Surface」シリーズのユニークな作風で知られる（参照：BA Street Art）

ブリック・レーンにも掲げられている（写真。他の場所にもあるかも）、横のでっかい「PLEASE USE TOILETS PROVIDED（ちゃんとトイレで用を足しましょう＝その辺でしないように！）」という注意書き、すごくみっともない。。。

“Scratching the Surface” wall with a man’s face in Dray Walk at the Old Truman Gallery, is made by Alexandre Farto, a Portuguese street artist better known as Vihls, in a collaboration with Orelha Negra. You can see this in front of ‘Attar’ (above) in the same place.Vihls creates his signature works by chipping off tiny bits of plaster and concrete from walls (reference: BA Street Art).

By the way, this big “PLEASE USE TOILETS PROVIDED” signboard was put up also on Brick Lane (photo), and probably somewhere else as well nearby. It is quite embarrassing to see this here and there…

Red Market: Pop-Up Street Food Market @ Old Street

Old StreetとGreat Eastern Streetが枝分かれする角の空き地で、夏限定のフードマーケット・Red Marketが現在開催中。昨年は夜のみのナイト・マーケットだったこのマーケット、今年は7月6日に始まり最初の2週間は週末のみだったけれど、7月21日〜9月2日の平日は昼12時から夜11時まで終日オープンしている（土曜は午後5〜10時、日曜は休み）。

グラフィティ・アートで覆われたビルに囲まれた2万平方フィート（約1858平方メートル）の広場には、ハンバーガーやイタリア、オーストリア、ハンガリー、地中海風メゼ、ジャパニーズなど、世界のストリート・フードを売る屋台がぐるり並び、昼はランチを求める人たち、夜はフード＆ドリンクを楽しむ人々で賑わう。→写真：Time Out / Red Gallery / Zagat

クローズまで間もないけれど、折りにつけ、パラリンピックのパブリックビューイング、映画上映、ライブ・ミュージック等のイベントも開催されるので、興味がある人はマーケットのサイトを要チェック。

Pop-up street food market Red Market is currently running on an empty space where Old Street and Great Eastern Street meet. This market opened only at night last summer, but this summer it opens from 12 noon to 11pm daily on weekdays from July 21 to September 2 (Saturdays: 5-10pm, close on Sundays), though first two weeks from July 6th opened only on weekend.

There are world street food vendors such as hamburger, Austrian sandwiches, Hungarian, Mediterranean meze, and Japanese in this 20,000 ft² (=1858 m²) space, surrounded by buildings colorized with various graffiti art. The market attracts hungry stomachs looking for lunch and snacks during the day, and hip creators enjoy food & drinks at night. →photos: Time Out / Red Gallery / Zagat

Not much time left until its closing, but if you are interested, check their website for special events such as public viewing for Paralympics, film screening, and live music etc.

‘The New Logo for the Hackney Looting Team’ Graffiti by Pure Evil @ Broadway Market

ハックニーのBroadway Market（ブロードウェイ・マーケット）の街角で、Pure Evilが描いた「The New Logo for the Hackney Looting Team（ハックニー略奪チームの新しいロゴ）」を見つけた。昨年ロンドンで起こった暴動とオリンピックがモチーフのこの作品は、Pure Evilいわく、オリンピックはVIPたちがエンジョイできるパーティのようなもので、自分たちは蚊帳の外でお呼びじゃないという、ハックニー住民の失望感を表しているという。

その気持ちは分からなくはない。オリンピックのチケットは高額だし、ロンドンの中心街やオリンピック会場は五輪で盛り上がってるけれども、貧困層の住むイーストロンドンを含むその他のエリアは別世界。オリンピックのロゴも国旗も滅多に見かけなかったし、パブでもオリンピック中継はあまりやっておらず、街が分断されているかのように感じたのは本当だ。

私個人の感想を言わせてもらえば、オリンピックは思った以上に面白かった。こんなに短期集中的にスポーツを見たことは人生初めてだし、世界的イベントがロンドンで行われた時にここにいられて実際観戦できて、本当に良かったと思う。ただし、BBCのオリンピック中継には少し物申したい。The Telegraph紙でも伝えているように、ともかくイギリス人選手のことばっかりで、ホスト国だと言うのにイギリス人選手が出ていない試合やマイナーなスポーツはほとんど無視、その日行われた全試合の結果を伝えるダイジェストさえなし。私たちはケーブルテレビに加入しているので、BBCの五輪特別チャンネルでほとんどの試合を生で見れたのだが、同じ時間に試合が重なると、当然のようにイギリス人やヨーロッパ人の選手が出る試合が優先される。柔道や卓球など、ワクワクして試合が始まるのを待っていたのに、全然違う国の選手の試合を見せられて失望したことも何度か。仕方ないことだが、せめてスクリーンを分割するとか小さな囲みを入れるとかして、他の試合も見せて欲しかった。ケーブルテレビに加入していない友人などは、現地にいるにも関わらず、早々にテレビ観戦は諦めてネットのニュースで結果をチェックしていたそう。日本のテレビも日本人のことばかりだけれど、ロンドンは何と言ってもホストシティ、しかも住民の半数が外国生まれで国際都市を謳っている割に、この有様。外国人だって、TV license（受信料）払ってるのに。。。オリンピック開始前には文句ばっかり言って冷めてたイギリス人が、こんなに熱狂的で愛国心満々になるなんて、思いもしなかった。

I found this graffiti, ‘The New Logo for the Hackney Looting Team‘ painted by Pure Evil at the corner of Broadway Market in the heart of Hackney. Pure Evil explained the message behind it is a disenfranchisement that people in Hackney felt about the Olympics, which they thought it had been a bit of a party for the VIPs and they hadn’t been invited and included.

It may be a bit true. The Olympic tickets were quite expensive, and I felt the Olympic atmosphere around the Game venues and downtown London, but it seemed nothing was happening in some areas including deprived neighborhood in East London – very few olympic symbols or national flags, and little olympic viewing at a local pub. I felt like the city was divided somehow.

Overall I really enjoyed the Olympic myself. I am glad that I was here when this great event took place in London. But I and my non-British friends had a little problem with BBC Olympic coverage. They constantly and repeatedly talked about British athletes, but almost no coverage for the non-popular games that British athletes were not expected for medals (The Telegraph). We have a cable TV, showing most of the games live, but if multiple games of the same sport taking place at the same time, the coverage gave a priority to British and European athletes. Of course they should mainly cover British olympians, as BBC is the British TV station, but they didn’t even do few minutes of digest for all the games of the day. UK is the host country and I believe they have some responsibility to broadcast wide variety of the games not only for British but also for both foreign visitors and residents. I was here in front of the TV at home many times, but I sometimes got disappointed by watching the game I did care less. They could split the screen or could insert a small screen at the corner of main screen to show other games as well! Situation for some of my friends who don’t have cable TV was even worse – they just gave up watching TV and checked internet for a result and news. I thought London is the cosmopolitan city that half of the residents are foreign-born… We foreigners also pay for TV license! British people were rather unenthsiastic before the Olympic started, but I was surprised that they turned to be very fanatic and patriotic at the end (The Time blog).

チャイナタウンで見つけたこの中国人のオジサンは、何とこの人力車で中国からロンドンにやってきたそう（BBCニュース）。北京オリンピックを見て感銘を受け、次の開催地であるロンドンを目指すことを決意、2020年5月23日に中国の自宅を出発してから、16カ国1764市を通る、14万キロ以上の道程をやってきた。彼曰く、平和と環境保護というメッセージを世界に伝え続けたいと、次は2016年オリンピック開催地であるリオデジャネイロに向かう予定だそう。こんな人力車でよく頑張った。ご苦労様！

On the main street of China Town, I happened to see this Chinese man who traveled from China to London with his rickshaw (BBC news). He was inspired to travel to the next host city for the Games, while he saw the Olympic in Beijing, and he has travelled more than 90,000km through 16 countries and 1,764 cities since he left his home in China on May 23, 2010. He says he wants to carry on spreading his message of peace and environmental protection, and next he is going to head to Brazil for Rio 2016. Great job, and good luck to you!

“Change” Anti-Knife Carrying Campaign by Ben Eine @ Old Street

以前、「Alphabet Graffiti」について取り上げたグラフィティ／ストリート・アーティスト、Ben Eine（ベン・アイン）の作品「Change」が今年9月に、オールド・ストリート駅の西に登場した。これは2006年9月に、背中を20回以上も刺されて殺された若者・Tom-Louis Eastonくんの家族と友人が設立した慈善団体「Flavasum Trust」が、「anti-knife carrying campaign（ナイフ携帯反対キャンペーン）」のために委託した作品。イズリントン・カウンシル（区役所）は、この作品を1年間以内に限って残す事を許可し、ベン・アインは無償でこの仕事を引き受けたそうだ。

An graffiti/street artist, whom I wrote his work “Alphabet Graffiti” a while ago, Ben Eine‘s work “Change” appeared in last September on the west of Old Street station .  This is a commission for “anti-knife carrying campaign” by the Flavasum Trust, a charity set-up by the friends and family of Tom-Louis Easton, a young musician who was stabbed in the back over 20 times to death in September 2006. Islington Council has given permission for the work to stay up for a year, and Ben did the work for free.

ガーディアン紙の記事によると、イギリスの若者の死のうち40％はナイフによるものだそうだ。その数は、ヨーロッパの中ではドイツやスロベニアなどと並んで低いらしいけれど、近年、ギャング・メンバーや不良少年たちが「護身用」としてナイフを持ち歩き、ギャング間で抗争を起こしたり、時に一般人も殺めたりして問題となっている。

According to the Guardian’s article, knives were used in almost 4 out of 10 killings of British youths. Although its number is one of the lowest knife death rates in Europe along with Germany and Slovenia, some of young people become gang members to give them status and carry a knife for a sense of security, resulting in murders during a gang war and occasionally invovling a stranger.

2007年12月、人通りの多いエンジェル駅の近くで昼2時30分頃、「ガンをつけた」とギャング・メンバーにいちゃもんをつけられ、公衆の面前で刺殺された16歳の少年・Nassirudeen Osaweくんが描かれたグラフィティ（関連記事1/2）。事件現場そばで撮影。

HEL YES! Design and Food from Helsinki: London Design Festival 2010

家の近所に、何度も描いては上描きされてきた、グラフィティのメッカ？がある。元はRentokilの倉庫だったこの建物、David Choeの作品が描かれていた時にブログに書いたが（過去エントリー）、その後、銃のアウトラインの中に地図を画いた、PURE EVILの「MURDER MILE」が取って代わり、少し前に、新しい作品を描いている場面に遭遇したので、写真を撮った。いつものグラフィティかと思ったら、普段は閉まっている建物に人が出入りしている。新しいギャラリーかお店がオープンするのかと疑問に思っていたが、9月14日、Daily Candyのニュースレターで、その謎がついに解けた。

There is a Mecca for Graffiti artists near our home, where several graffitis overpainted by the new one on the former Rentokil depot. Since I talked about David Choe‘s work last year (past entry), PURE EVIL’s MURDER MILE took over the space, and recently I photographed someone working on the new project. I thought it was just another graffiti, but since then there had been people coming in and out from this normally empty building, and we were expecting an opening of a new gallery or shop. Then on September 14, the mystery was solved, by Daily Candy’s daily newsletter.

London Design Festivalの一環として、フィンランド最高の食とデザインを紹介するレストラン＆展示スペース「HEL YES!」が、9月15日から10月3日までの水曜から日曜日の14日間という期間限定でオープンしたのだ。ヘルシンキで人気のレストラン「Ateljé Finne」や「Kuurna」を手がけるAntto MelasniemiとFinnish Instituteがロンドン・デザイン・フェスティバルのために企画、イギリスで活躍するイラストレーターのKlaus Haapaniemi（クラウス・ハーパニエミ）とアート・ディレクター＆コンセプトデザイナーのMia Walleniusなどが加わって作り上げた。Iittala（イッタラ）とArtek（アルテック）が特製の家具や照明、食器などを用意。またその他の照明デザインや、家具、制服なども、フィンランドのデザイナーが特別に製作した。

家も近いし、フィンランド料理なんてあんまりお目にかかることがないので、行ってみたいなと思ったけれど、既に期間中の予約は一杯、写真を撮るだけで終わった。食事しなくても、中の見学や、コーヒーやドリンクの注文は出来るそう。昨日書いたWenlock Armsの目と鼻の先、またVictoria Miro Galleryも近いので、期間中近くに来ることがあれば、３つセットでお試しあれ。

As a part of the London Design Festival, “HEL YES!“, a temporary restaurant and exhibition showcasing the best Finnish food and design, opens just 14 days, Wednesday to Sunday from September 15 to October 3. The Finnish Institute and Antto Melasniemi who manages Helsinki’s popular restaurants “Ateljé Finne” and “Kuurna“, planned and created together with UK-based fashion illustrator Klaus Haapaniemi, an art director & concept designer Mia Wallenius and others. Iittala and Artek supplied exclusive customized furniture, lighting and tableware, and the lighting design, furniture and staff uniforms were designed exclusively for HEL YES! by leading Finnish contemporary designers.

We wanted to make a reservation since it is nearby, and it is a rare occasion to try Finnish food, but this temporary restaurant is fully booked during the period – so we just took some photos. But HEL YES! is open without booking for viewing, coffee and drinks. It is just few steps away from the Wenlock Arms I wrote yesterday, and the Victoria Miro Gallery is around the corner – why don’t you try these three as a set, if you are around during the event?
