The Olde Bell Inn @ Hurley, Berkshire

３月も後半だというのに、イギリスは毎日凍えるような寒さで嫌になる。この寒さの中、きれいな空気を吸いに、ロンドン郊外の田舎へ足を伸ばしてみた。

宿泊地はMr & Mrs Smith（過去ブログ参照）で見つけた、ロンドンとオックスフォードの中間に位置する小さな村・HurleyにあるThe Olde Bell。近くのベネディクト会修道院を訪れる人たちの宿泊所として1135年にオープンしたという、現在も営業中のイギリス最古の宿だそう。第二次世界大戦中は、ルマンディー上陸作戦前に、アメリカ諜報部の秘密基地として使われていた近くのLadye Place Mansionを訪れたチャーチル首相やアイゼンハワー米大統領なども宿泊したという由緒ある宿で、エリザベス・テーラーやケーリー・グラントといった錚々たるスターも宿泊者名簿に並ぶ。また、ダスティン・ホフマンの初監督作品「カルテット！人生のオペラハウス」の撮影場所としても使用されたらしい。ちなみに、Mr & Mrs Smithのメンバーになると（無料）、シャンパンのボトル一本が特典でつくのも魅力。

このホテル、敷地は意外に広くて、本館と隣接のMalt House、コテージ風客室を備えたCottage、そして道を挟んで、農業用の納屋を改装したBrick BarnとTithe Barn、Bell Lodgeに、合計48室有する。また、広々とした庭や野菜畑、テニスコートもある。私たちの部屋は、ヴィクトリア時代の建物で、図書館や音楽ルームなどが備わっているMalt Houseで、イギリス版Elle Decorationの初代編集者でインテリア・デザイナーのlse Crawfordがデザインした部屋の小さい方（1泊£135）。ロケーション、値段の割に部屋は狭いけれど、落ち着いた色調でセンスよくまとめられている。バスルームはシャワーのみだけれど、広くて使いやすい。難点は各部屋が水を使う度に聞こえるボイラー音が結構煩い事。眠りの浅い時など、起こされてしまう時もあった。

ディナー、朝食は本館1階にあるレストランで。数部屋に分かれたレストランは広々としていてテーブル数も多く、カントリースタイルをモダンにアレンジしたインテリアは洗練されている。地元産の食材を使った料理は新鮮で美味しく、値段はロンドン並みだけれど、その価値はあり。朝食は、田舎では珍しくフル・ブレックファストではなく、ビュッフェスタイルのコンチネンタル・ブレックファストのみ（温かい食事は別料金）なのが、ちょっと手抜きな印象。Booking.comのレビューでも朝食への不満がちらほら見られる。

Hurleyは小さいけれど、ロンドンやオックスフォードへのアクセスもいいので、住宅価格は国の平均の約5倍もするという裕福な村。特別な見所はないけれど、テムズ川縁をのんびり散歩するのもいいし、近隣の、レガッタで有名なHenley-on-Thamesや、National Trustが管理するお屋敷や庭園を訪れるのもいい。私達もこの旅行で4つNational Trust巡りをした（詳細は明日以降ブログに書く予定）。寒波で春の訪れまだ遠く、庭園には水仙程度しか花が咲いていなかったのが残念。

It’s been freezing cold in UK though it is almost April. Despite of the depressing weather, we traveled to countryside to breath fresh air.

The destination is a tiny village of Hurley in Berkshire, between London and Oxford, and we stayed at The Olde Bell that we found on Mr & Mrs Smith website. Free gift of a bottle of champagne for a member of Mr & Mrs Smith (and it’s free!) was a good incentive too (see details). The Olde Bell is the oldest still-working inn in Britain, first opened its doors in 1135 as a guest house for visitors to the nearby Benedictine Priory. During World War II, Sir Winston Churchill and Dwight D Eisenhower stayed this inn when they visited Ladye Place Mansion, next to the church, which was being used as a secret US intelligence base prior to the Normandy Landings. Other famous guests include Elizabeth Taylor and Cary Grant, and the inn was also used as the filming location for Dustin Hoffman’s first directorial film “Quartet“.

The inn has surprisingly large estate and has total of 48 rooms at the main building “The Inn” and the adjacent Malt House and The Cottage, and two converted barns of Brick Barn and Tithe Barn as well as Bell Lodge across the street. Also there are spacious gardens, vegetable garden and a tennis court as well. Our room “Malt House smaller” (£135/night) is in the victorian building of Malt House which has some gathering spaces such as library and music room, and the room is designed by lse Crawford, an interior designer and founding editor of British Elle Decoration. The room is relatively small with its location and the price, but chic and intimate – design costs. Bathroom has shower only but spacious and bright. The only problem is the noise caused every time someone use water in the bathroom – it woke me up sometimes during the sleep. 

We had dinner and breakfast at the Inn restaurant. This rustic-chic restaurant has few separate rooms and is more spacious than we expected. The food is a little bit pricey, which is almost the same level as London, but their delicious meal using local produce was worth its price. But breakfast was disappointing – it was continental breakfast instead of full breakfast, which is a rarity in British countryside (warm food costs extra) – this seems to me rather a lack of an effort. In fact, some people complains about the breakfast on Booking.com reviews.

Hurley is very small but an affluent village and house prices are approx five times higher than the national average (Wikipedia), due to its easy access to Oxford and London. It is nice to have a lovely walk on the Thames, or visiting Henley-on-Thames, famous for regatta race, and National Trust estates nearby. We visited four National Trust sites this time and I will write about them tomorrow. It was a shame that we couldn’t see those gardens with flowers due to this cold weather!

Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Weekend

イギリスは明日から、エリザベス女王のDiamond Jubilee（戴冠60周年）を祝う4連休となる。街はすっかりお祭りムード。国を挙げてお祝い気分を盛り上げ、不況打開・関連消費拡大を狙ってる感が、無きにしもあらずだが。

6月3日午後は、メインイベントである、王室メンバーが乗り込む王室専用船を含む1000艘以上の船が、バタシーからタワー・ブリッジまで、テムズ川を航行するThames Diamond Jubilee Pageant（テムズ・ダイヤモンド・ジュビリー・ページェント）が行われる。また、道にテーブルや椅子を並べて近所の人たちや友人たちと飲み食いしながらお祝いするストリート・パーティやピクニックランチ等、大小様々な形態の「The Big Jubilee Lunch（ビッグ・ジュビリー・ランチ）」もこの日、全国津々浦々で催される予定。→イベント詳細はここで

別にアンチ王室ではないけれど、私たちは人混みと混乱を避けてロンドンを脱出します（Royal Weddingの時も不在だった）。Have a happy Diamond Jubilee weekend!

4-day Diamond Jubilee holiday will start from tomorrow and now the country is in a big celebration mood – though it seems to me that media and business are trying to pump up a bit harder to stimulate the country’s economy in recession, rather than everyone is really into it.

Sunday of June 3rd is the big day. The Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant will take place on the Thames, and around 1,000 boats including the royal barge will travel between Battersea and Tower Bridges. For people who don’t want to squeeze themselves in big crowds on the riverside, there will be the Big Jubilee Lunch: street parties or picnics in parks, in small or larger groups, all over the country. → more details of the Diamond Jubilee weekend

We are going to leave London during this period, though it doesn’t mean that we are anti-Queen, but we just want to avoid the big chaos (we run away during the Royal Wedding as well). Have a happy Diamond Jubilee weekend, everyone in UK!

London’s One Room Hotel: “A Room for London” Art Project @ Southbank Centre

Southbank Centre（サウスバンク・センター）の上に乗っかった船。これは、London 2012 Festivalの一環のアートプロジェクト「A Room for London」、テムズ川を見下ろす一部屋だけのホテル。London 2012 Festivalは、北京オリンピック終了後の2008年9月より4年間に渡って行われている文化芸術プログラム「Cultural Olympiad（カルチュラル・オリンピアード）」のハイライトとして、6月21日から9月9日まで、ロンドン・オリンピックの開催中、無料コンサートやアート展など、約1000ものパフォーマンスやイベントが催される他、フェスティバル前にも様々なカウントダウンイベントが行われる予定。

この「A Room for London」は、ジョゼフ・コンラッドの1899年出版の小説「Heart of Darkness（闇の奥）」に出てくる、テムズ川を出発しアフリカのコンゴに至る旅に使われたriverboat（川船）にインスピレーションを得て、David Kohn ArchitectsとアーティストのFiona Bannerが制作した。一晩限り、二人まで宿泊可能で宿泊料は£120〜、公的プロジェクトだからか、メディアも注目する期間限定の特別ホテルなのに、値段はかなり控えめ。あいにく昨年9月9日に始まった1〜6月の予約は開始12分で満室になったけれど、7〜12月の予約は来週19日正午に始まる。メディアでも取り上げられているので応募多数と予測されるけれど、想い出作りに、運試しに申し込んでみるのもいいかも。

A classic boat appeared on the top of Southbank Centre, overlooking the river Thames – this is an arts project “A Room for London” and it is a part of the London 2012 Festival. The London 2012 Festival is a huge cultural celebration, coinciding with the Olympic and Paralympic Games in London, and a culmination of the a four-year programme of cultural events “Cultural Olympiad“, started in 2008 just after Beijing Olympic. From June 21 to September 9, 2012, there will be 1,000 performances and events such as free concerts and art exhibitions, as well as countdown events before the Festival opens.

Inspired by the riverboat captained by Joseph Conrad while in the Congo in 1890, later recreated in his novel Heart of Darkness, David Kohn Architects and artist Fiona Banner created this unique art project. General public can rent out this space for £120〜 for up to two people for one night only. The price is quite reasonable with the premium to stay at the special art project with  limited period and public attention – probably because it is a public event for everybody. Unfortunately the riverboat is sold out during January–June, just 12 minutes after going live on September 8th last year, but bookings for the period of July to December will go on sale online at 12pm on January 19 next week. Dinner @ Skylon

ロンドンは年末から、近年にない寒波に襲われ、毎日最高気温３、４度以下、夜は零下となる寒い日が続いている。今日はその寒さの中、ユニクロのヒートテック下着を着込んで、MのVespaで、サウスバンク（Southbank）のコンサートホール・ロイヤルフェスティバルホール（Royal Festival Hall）にあるレストラン、Skylonに行ってきた。Toptableというレストラン予約サイトでレストランやホテルを予約し、後日評価を書き込むことでもらえるポイントがだいぶたまっていたので、以前から行ってみたかったSkylonでの無料ディナー（前菜・メイン料理・デザートから２品選択。飲み物別）にポイントを交換。

Skylonのオーナー会社、D&D Londonはロンドン、パリ、コペンハーゲン、ニューヨーク、東京等にレストランを展開。近年、テレンス・コンラン卿経営のレストラングループを買収し、コンラン卿とは、今でもデザイナーとして、また株主として緊密な関係を保っている。

Skylonという名前は、1951年に開催された Festival of Britainのために建設された、細長い葉巻のような形をしたタワーからとったもの。５０年代風のスタイリッシュな内装、高い天井、大きな天井のライト、広々としたダイニングルーム。テムズ川に面した大きな一面の窓からは、川向こうの夜景がきれいに見える。SouthbankにはBFI (British Film Institute・映画館)、National Theater（ナショナルシアター、劇場）、London Eye（ロンドン・アイ、観覧車）もあり、Skylonのレストラン・バーはいつもにぎわっている。時間が遅かったからか、この日は窓際のテーブルに座れた。イギリス料理とヨーロッパ料理のフュージョンであるお料理も、なかなかのお味。特にデザートのチョコレートムースとコーヒーアイスは絶品！今晩、ロンドンは気温が０度にまで下がり、最近あまり見れなくなった「霧のロンドン」の夜景を堪能できた。

It has been very cold in years since Christmas. We went to the restaurant Skylon at the Royal Festival Hall in Southbank, with M’s Vespa. I had a lots of reward points with Toptable restaurant reservation site by making a reservation and rating the restaurant afterward, so I got a free 2 course-dinner (without drinks) for two at Skylon.

The owner company of Skylon –  D&D London – owns and operates restaurants in London, Paris, Copenhagen, New York and Tokyo. Following the buy out of Conran Restaurants in 2006, D&D London is now an independent business, maintaining their close relationship with Conran both as shareholders and designers.

The name ‘Skylon‘ came from the Skylon – futuristic-looking, slender, vertical, cigar-shaped steel structure – located by the Thames, and built in 1951 for Festival of Britain. The 1950’s inspired style design decor, with high ceilings and big oval-shaped lighting, and spacious dining rooms. You can enjoy a beautiful panorama with floor to ceiling windows overlooking to the River Thames. Skylon restaurant and bar is a popular place in Southbank with cultural facilities such as the Royal Festival Hall, BFI (British Film Institute), National Theater, and the London Eye. Probably because our reservation was a bit late, we could sit at the table next to the windows. The food at Skylon is Euro-Brit –– a fusion of European and British cuisine. I particularly liked my chocolate mouse with coffee ice-cream! We also enjoyed the mysterious misty London from the large windows view.

初めまして、そして明けましておめでとうございます！

今年の大晦日のロンドンは０度前後ととても寒く、日付が変わる真夜中１２時からテムズ川南岸で行われた花火には行かず、家でテレビを見ながら、スパークリングワインで２人でささやかにお祝いした。

これから、ロンドンで私が体験したことを、ジャンルを問わず、思いつくままに書いていきたいと思っています。今日始めたばかりのまだ未熟なブログ、デザインやレイアウト等をその都度変えていくこともあるけれど、温かい目で見守っていただければ幸いです。

Happy New Year!

The temperature in London tonight is very cold, so we gave up going to see a new year fire works at Southbank. We celebrated our new year with sparkling wine at home, watching TV coverage of new year celebration.

I would like to write anything about London and UK from today. I may change bit of pieces of layout etc., as I just started the blog for the first time of my life!
