Two years on from Japan Tsunami, but the media has already lost interest…

東日本大震災から丁度2年たった今日3月11日。ドキュメンタリー番組や特集記事で、この節目の日が大きく扱われるものと思っていたが、残念ながら2分足らずの追悼式典の映像程度で、目立ったものはなかった。

もしかして見逃していたのかな？と思って、今日のテレビ案内を隅々からチェックしてみたけれど、関連番組はゼロ。PanoramaやDispatchesといった、時事問題を扱うドキュメンタリー番組でさえ、アメリカの銃問題や子犬の密輸入問題と、今日でなくてもよい話題を取り上げていた。年のため現在、24時間放送のBBCニュースを1時間以上見ているが、既に話題から外されている。

じゃあ、新聞はどうかと調べてみた。BBCニュース「world」欄、タイムズ紙、インディペンデント紙は、サイトで一番重要なホームページでの扱いはなし。

Today, March 11th, marks the two year anniversary of Japan earthquake & Tsunami. I thought I could watch any documentary or big news coverage or something, but disappointedly I haven’t seen anything substantial, other than 1-2 minute coverage of the memorial ceremony.

I thought I might have missed something and checked today’s TV guide, but there is no listing on main TV channels (BBC1,2,3,4, ITV, Channel 4, Five). Even on Panorama or Dispatches, both current affairs documentary programs aired today, they talk about “America’s Gun Addiction” and “Undercover Designer Dogs”. I have been watching BBC news 24 for over  an hour now but zero coverage.

So I quickly checked the newspaper website, to see if the newspapers deal with the issue. BBC news ‘world’ section, the Times, the Independent don’t talk about it at all on the first page which is the most important page of the web.

テレグラフ紙は、福島原発近くで撮影した写真シリーズを掲載しているが、スクロールを繰り返さなければたどり着けないほど下の方。俳優のジム・キャリーより下だ。

Telegraph shows a series of photos of Fukushima but not the news coverage, all the way down, lower than Jim Carrey!

デーリーメールは、右欄「world news」に記載はあるが、写真なし。

Daily Mail lists the news on the ‘world news’ column on the right, but without photo to stand out.

主要各国のGoogleニュースサイトも見てみたが、このような扱いは、イギリスメディアだけではないようだ。イギリス版（下写真上）では、アメリカ、カナダ、ドイツ，フランス版とともに、最も読まれたニュースのリストには入っていない。でも驚くことに、イタリア版（下写真中）では最も読まれたニュースの1位、スペイン版（下写真下）では6位だった。

It is not only UK, but also in other countries, too. I checked the Google News site of several major countries, but the result was more or less the same. On UK edition (below top), the news is not one of the most read topics, neither on US, Canada, Germany, and France edition. But surprisingly ‘Fukushima’ is the most read news on Italian edition (below second), and 6th on Spanish edition  (below second), for some strange reason. 

   

イギリスメディアは、ニューヨークの9/11テロは発生以来毎年、2004年のスマトラ島沖地震大津波も長らく、記念日には大々的に取り上げていた。だから、2万人以上の人が亡くなった東日本大震災も当然大きく扱うものだと思っていたから、その扱いの小ささに落胆した。震災・津波発生時のパニック的扱いに比べたら雲泥の差だ。2年経った今でも、原発周辺の住民を含む30万人以上の人が仮設住宅に暮らし、被災地の復興は遅々として進まず、その道程は遠い。原発処理も終わっていないし、放射能汚染の恐れもある。遠い外国に住む人たちに、いつも覚えていろとは言わないけれど、今日ぐらい、ちょっとでも被災者の方達に思いを馳せてもらえたらと思うのは、期待し過ぎなのだろうか。

 

UK media has been talking about 9/11 every year since 2001 and 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami for several years, so I had some hope to see some coverage about Japan Tsunami as well. But sadly it was very little, and they seems to have forgotten (or downplay, according to M) about the Tsunami and earthquakes that killed over 20,000 people. What a difference from the huge media coverage when it happened. Still over 300,000 people are living in the temporary housing, including the evacuees from the vicinity of Fukushima nuclear power plants, and the large part of the areas affected have barely recovered and still long way to go back to normal. Radiation is still leaking from the nuclear power plants and is causing fear among many people. I don’t think the world should care about this incident only, but they can remember a bit of it, at least on the day of anniversary…

「Market」と「Meerkat」をかけたこのCMキャンペーンは、2009年1月のオンエア後、ミーアキャットたちのコミカルな演技？とロシア語訛りオルロフのキャッチフレーズ「Simples（注：文法的には間違い）」で大成功。comparethemarket.comは、イギリスで訪問者数4番目の保険会社のウェブサイトとなり、売上げは倍増、2010年にはマーケットシェアが76％にまでなった。現在アレクサンドルは、約80万人のFacebookファン、5万5000人のTwitterフォロワーを持つ人気者。フォトサイト・Flickrで、家族写真も見られる。かなり面白いCMなので、YouTubeの comparethemeerkat.comチャンネルでチェックしてみて。

This funny video of “Meerkat Polka Band Play Corrie Theme Tune” is the latest advert from TV advertising campaign “Compare the meerkat” for a British price comparison website comparethemarket.com. The adverts feature Aleksandr Orlov, a fictional Russian aristcratic meerkat and the founder of http://www.comparethemeerkat.com, together with his servant, family and friends.

The campaign was launched in January 2009, playing on the similarity between the words “Market” and “Meerkat” and with Orlov’s catchphrase ‘Simples’. It has achieved a great success since then and also has contributed to a commercial success for comparethemarket.com to become the UK’s 4th most visited insurance website, and the site’s overall sales doubled. By 2010 the site had increased its market share by 76%. As of today, Aleksandr has more than 800,000 Facebook fans and around 55,000 followers on Twitter, as well as his Flickr gallery for family portraits. The adverts are quite funny, so check out the videos on YouTube’s channel of comparethemeerkat.com.

New Look for BBC 2012

ロンドン・オリンピック開催まで200日を切った（正確に言うと192日）。Tube（ロンドン地下鉄）各駅やBlackfriars（ブラックフライアーズ）駅、 Farrindon（ファリンドン）駅などの鉄道駅の改装といったインフラの整備や、様々な建設工事がロンドン市内のあちこちで急ピッチで進められており、オリンピックが近づいていることを感じさせる。もっともロンドンの住人は、犬も歩けば棒に当たるじゃないけれど、行く先々で遭遇する工事現場の騒音や通行止め、道幅減少などに閉口しているけれど。

そして、イギリスの国営放送BBCが去年7月に立ち上げたオリンピック特集ウェブサイト・BBC 2012もこの度お化粧直しされた。このサイトは、ニュース、スポーツ、ドラマ、アート、カルチャー、コメディ、交通情報や役立つ情報など、BBCのオンライン、テレビ、ラジオのオリンピック関連コンテンツ（ライブ、ビデオ、オーディオ、写真、インタビュー、裏話など）が一堂に集められているので、ロンドン・オリンピック委員会のLondon 2012とともに、オリンピックや関連イベントの情報収集に便利かも。→詳細はBBCブログで

It is less than 200 days (precisely saying, 192 days) to go til London Olympic 2012, and all kinds of constructions and building works, including maintenance works of some tube stations and revamping rail stations such as Blackfriars station and Farrindon station, now seem to be speeding up and this make us feel the Olympic is coming. Exciting, though many Londoners complain the noise, reduced road width and diversion caused by never-ending works that we encounter every corner of the city.

BBC, British national broadcaster that most of you already know, has changed the look of BBC 2012, a website launched last July, dedicated to London Olympic. The site showcases a variety of contents arising from the London Olympic and Paralympic Games, ie. news, sport, drama, arts, culture, comedy, traffics as well as other useful info, gathered from BBC’s online, television and radio, in the form of live coverage, video and audio clips, background stories, pictures and cast interviews. ITV “Injustice” Advertising Campaign

最近、街角の電光掲示板や新聞でよく見た広告シリーズ。これは、ITVで6月6日〜10日まで放送予定の、ジェームズ・ピュアフォイ主演の犯罪ドラマ「Injustice」のもの。黒白の切り絵のような銃やナイフをあしらったデザインが印象的だ。

ITVは、1955年9月に放送を開始したイギリス最大で最古の民間放送局。以前はドキュメンタリーや社会問題を扱った番組などが多かったそうだけれど、90年代後半から、Coronation Street（コロネーション・ストリート）やEmmerdaleなどのソープ・オペラ（連続メロドラマ。日本と違い、昼じゃなく夕方に放映）やリアリティ番組が多くなったそう。ITVは娯楽やスポーツ番組がほとんどなので、私たちもあんまり見ない。

ちなみに去年、アップル社が Apple TVを、iPhoneやiPod、iPadなどと同様「iTV」に変えるという噂を受け、ITVが対決姿勢を表明していたそう（参考ブログ）。未だに名前が変わっていないところを見ると、アップルが法廷での争いに負けると見越して諦めたか、もしくは単なる噂だったのか。

I have seen this advertising campaign on the streets and newspapers many times recently. These ads are of ITV‘s “Injustice,“ a 5–part series (June 6 – 20) starring James Purefoy as a criminal barrister recovering from traumatic events. Its black & white silhouette design is quite striking, with images of knife and gun.

ITV is the biggest and the oldest commercial television network in the UK, having begun broadcasting in 1955. ITV used to produce strong current affairs and documentary programs, according to Wikipedia. But from the late 1990s it has changed its direction and now its TV listings are full of entertainment programs;  soap operas, such as Coronation Street and Emmerdale, “reality TV” like Celebrity Fit Club and Love Island, and sports. We rarely watch the channel because there are no programs really appealing to us…

One interesting episode of ITV. ITV said that it would “vigorously defend” its brand and reputation, if, as rumoured, Apple renames its Apple TV to “iTV”, as in a series of their popular product names like iPhone, iPod, or iPad (Telegraph article). Apple TV is still “Apple TV”, so I guess it was just a rumor or Apple gave up assuming that they are going to loose the legal battle.

長いクリスマス・ホリデーがようやく終わった。今年はクリスマスが土曜日に当たったので、クリスマスの休日が27日（月曜日）に、そしてボクシング・デーが28日（火曜日）にずれ込んだからだ。ようやく通常の生活に戻ると思いきや、数日するとまたまた新年の休日（1日〜3日）になってしまうので、その間ずっと閉まっているお店やレストランも多い。→イギリスの休日（バンク・ホリデー）はこちらで。

上のビデオは、今日、BBCで放映されるドキュメンタリー「Poler Bear – Spy on the Ice」から抜粋されたもの。撮影に使われた「spy cams（スパイカメラ）」を、好奇心から近づいたホッキョクグマが、見事に破壊する姿が妙に可愛い。つまらない番組が幅を利かせているホリデー・シーズン中、少しは楽しめそうな、数少ない番組。

テレビもつまらないし、ホリデーシーズンでちゃんと機能していないロンドンを、明日からしばらく抜け出します。1月10日はブログを再開しようと思っていますので、皆さん、良い年末年始をお過ごしくださいね！

Finally long Christmas weekend was over. Christmas day was on Saturday this year, so Monday 27th became Christmas day holiday and Tuesday 28th was Boxing Day holiday subsequently. But the business here is still far from normal and many business and restaurants remain closed, as New Year’s weekend (1st to 3rd) will come in few days time. → check here for UK bank holidays

The video above is an excerpt of the BBC documentary “Poler Bear – Spy on the Ice” starts soon today. Curiosity-ridden polar bears destroy disguised hi-tech “spy cams” – it is cute and funny. Among all the boring TV programs and films during this holiday season, this documentary is one of the few programs enjoyable to see.

TV is full of trash this time and the city is not fully functioning, therefore we will get out of the town for a while from tomorrow. I will restart this blog on January 10th (hopefully). Have a happy new year everyone!
