Terence Conran: The Way We Live Now @ Design Museum

日本と同時開催中のデザイン展示会「Product fitness 80（もの八分目）」のスポンサーであるMUJI（無印良品）で買い物をし、そのレシートを持っていくと入場料が無料になるというので、久しぶりにデザイン・ミュージアムに行った。意外とこじんまりしていた「Product fitness 80」（明日詳しく書きます）より、昨年11月16日〜4月12日まで開催している「Terence Conran: The Way We Live Now」がなかなか面白かった。

この展覧会は、イギリスにおけるモダン・デザインの先駆けで、デザイン・ミュージアムの開設に貢献、今もデザイン界の重鎮として多大な影響力を持つテレンス・コンラン氏の80歳の誕生日を記念して企画。コンラン氏がキャリアをスタートさせた戦後の欠乏期、戦争の痛手から立ち直り、その象徴としてFestival of Britainが開催された50年代、インデペンデント・グループ（Independent Group）とポップアート運動の起こった60年代、デザイン・ブームの80年代、そして現代まで、コンラン氏がイギリスの現代の暮らしに与えた影響と、彼のデザインアプローチやインスピレーションを紹介している。

「plain, simple, useful（簡素、シンプル、便利）」を哲学とするコンラン氏のデザインは、過剰装飾・派手な色の多用がトレンディだった80年代を除き（今見返すとあの頃の悪趣味さを実感）、時代や流行が変わっても飽きがこない、温かみがあって良質のものが多い。彼の作り上げたレストランは少し時代遅れの感も否めないが、それ以外は、さすがイギリスのモダンデザインを作り上げたコンラン氏だけあると納得させる、見応えのある展覧会だった。

We went to the Design Museum, as entrance is free with a shopping receipt from MUJI, who is a sponsor of an exhibition “Product fitness 80“, coinciding in Tokyo and London. More than a small scaled “Product fitness 80” (I will talk about the details tomorrow), “Terence Conran: The Way We Live Now” (Nov 16. 2011 – Apr 12) was more interesting and worth to see.

This exhibition is planned to mark Sir Terence Conran’s 80th birthday. Sir Conran is a father of British modern interior design and still one of the most influential figure of design industry. The exhibition explores his impact on contemporary life in Britain, as well as his design approach and inspirations, tracing his career from post-war austerity through to the Festival of Britain representing the recovery from the war in the 1950s, the birth of the Independent Group and the Pop Culture of the 1960s, to the design boom of the 1980s and on to the present day.

Sir Conran’s design with his philosophy “plain, simple, and useful” has warmth and good quality, and is never been outdated, except the products produced in 80s when excessiveness and flashiness was trendy (I always feel quite embarrassed to see 80s stuffs). Also his group of restaurants are a bit passé, but otherwise, I enjoyed this exhibition overall.

Design Store Chain Habitat will be sold to Argos Owner!!

今日のニュースによると、イギリスのデザイン家具ショップのチェーン、Habitat（ハビタ。過去のエントリー1/2/3）が破産。 Argos（アーゴス）やHomebase（イギリスの大手ホームセンター・チェーン）を所有するHome Retail Groupが、Habitatブランドとトッテナムコート・ロード店、キングス・ロード店、フィンチリー・ロード店の計を3店舗を、2,450万ポンドで買収すると言う。この3店舗以外の全国30店はしばらく営業を続け、買い手を捜すそうだが。。。ここ数年、セールばっかりやってるなあと思っていたら、やはり経営状態は思わしくなかったようだ。

不況のせいもあるけれど、BBCニュースによると、サー・テレンス・コンランによって1964年に設立された当時は斬新であったモットー、「good design, affordable for all（良いデザインを手頃な値段で）」と言うコンセプトは、IKEAをはじめとして、今やいろんなお店が真似るようになってしまったことも原因の一つだそう。Habitatには度々お世話になっていたので、将来なくなってしまったらとても悲しい。。。

According to today’s news, British design furniture chain, Habitat (past entry 1/2/3) goes into administration. Home Retail Group, owner of Argos and Homebase, will buy the Habitat brand and three central London stores (Tottenham Court Road, King’s Road and Finchley Road) for £24.5m. The remaining 30 UK stores will trade as usual while the administrator talks to potential buyers. Habitat has been having ‘sale’ all the times in these years, and it is true that the chain hasn’t been doing well.

Not only the recent recession is the reason for their failure, but also the store’s concept “good design, affordable for all” was innovative and original when Sir Terence Conran set up the chain in 1964, but now other stores also take the same strategy and some, like IKEA, even sell ‘design’ products cheaper. I will be quite sad if the Habitat stores will disappear in the future…

Elephant Parade London 2010

May Day Bank Holiday（メーデー明けの月曜日。イギリスの祝日）の5月3日から始まった、Elephant Parade London 2010（エレファント・パレード・ロンドン2010）。アーティストやデザイナー、セレブたちによってペインティングを施された、実物大の赤ちゃん象260体がロンドンのあちこちに設置されている。

ロンドンの屋外でのアート・イベントとして過去最大となるエレファント・パレードは、絶滅の危機に瀕しているアジアゾウを救うためのチャリティ・イベント。ロンドンの前はオランダでも開催された。同様の慈善アート・イベントとしては、東京でも何度か行われた、2002年のCow Parade London（カウ・パレード）がある。

参加者は、デザイナーのTommy Hilfiger（トミー・ヒルフィガー）、Paul Smith（ポール・スミス）、Diane von Furstenberg（ダイアン・フォン・ファステンバーグ）、Julien MacDonald（ジュリアン・マクドナルド）、Matthew Williamson（マシュー・ウィリアムソン）、Lulu Guinness（ルル・ギネス）、アーティストのMarc Quinn（マーク・クイン）そしてSir Terence Conran（テレンス・コンラン）など。またイギリス王室の一員である、マイケル・オブ・ケント王子ご夫妻も参加されている。時には、歩き疲れた観光客や飲食の椅子代わりになったりしているけれど、これらのカラフルな子象たちは、愛嬌のある表情に可愛いポーズで、道行く人々の目を楽しませている。→もっと写真を見たい方はこちらをクリック。

6月22日までは、バッキンガム宮殿、国会議事堂前のパーラメント・スクエア、コヴェント・ガーデン、サウスバンク等、ロンドンの主な観光地の周辺に置かれるが、その後チェルシーにあるChelsea Royal Hospital（チェルシー王立病院：イギリス兵のための老人ホーム。RHSチェルシー・フラワー・ショーの会場にもなっている）に集められ、6月23日から7月2日まで一般公開。7月3日にはSotheby’s（サザビーズ）でオークションにかけられる。主催者は200万ポンドの売上を見込んでおり、その売上金は主催者のElephant Familyとアジアで活動する20のイギリスの保護団体に分配される予定。

ミニチュアの象は、デパートのSelfridgesや80 Regent St、36 Carnaby Street, and Greenwich Central Marketのお店の他、エレファント・パレードのオンラインショップで買える。

Elephant Parade London 2010 started on May 3, a May Day Bank Holiday, and 260 colorful life-size baby elephants, painted by artists, designers and celebrities, are located over central London during the event period.

Elephant Parade is a conservation campaign, similar to Cow Parade London in 2002, and aims at raising awareness of the urgent crisis faced by the endangered Asian elephant. This is London’s biggest outdoor art event on record, and the elephants have ‘paraded’ in Netherlands before London.

The participating artists include designer Tommy Hilfiger, Sir Paul Smith, Diane von Furstenberg, Julien MacDonald, Matthew Williamson, Lulu Guinness, Sir Terence Conran, and artist Marc Quinn, as well as HRH Prince and Princess Michael of Kent. Though sculptures are sometimes used as a resting point for exhausted tourists or a place to have a snack, but generally passersby appreciate these work of art, adore its cute face or gesture, or enjoy taking a picture. → For more picture, click here.

The elephants will stay at around major London landmarks including Buckingham Palace, Parliament Square, Covent Garden and the South Bank until June 22, and will be put all together in Chelsea Royal Hospital (retirement home and nursing home for British soldiers and the site of the annual Chelsea Flower Show) for public viewing from June 23 to July 2. On July 3, all of the elephants will be auctioned at Sotherby’s, aiming to raise £2 million to help the Elephant Family charity and 20 UK conservation charities working in Asia.

Mini elephants are available at Selfridges, 80 Regent St, 36 Carnaby St and Greenwich Central Market or at the elephant parade online shop.

Candeira Folding Reclining Chair by Habitat

ロンドンは今、夏のセールの真っ只中。Mがずっと欲しがっていた、アウトドア用のリクライニングチェアーが20％割引になっていたので、Tottenam Court Road（トッテナム・コート・ロード）にあるHabitat（ハビタ）に買いに行った。

Habitatは、イギリスを代表するデザイナーで、インテリアショップやレストランの経営者でもある、サー・テレンス・コンランによって1964年に設立された、スタイリッシュな家具や家庭用品を売るライフスタイルショップのチェーンで、現在ヨーロッパに80店舗を持つ。1992年に、IKEA（イケア）創業者Ingvar Kamprad（イングヴァル・カンプラード）とその家族が保有するIKANO Groupの傘下に入ったのだそうだが、私的にはHabitatはIKEAのちょっと高級バージョンと言う位置づけであったので、なるほどと得心したのだった。

さて、新しい折りたたみ式リクライニングチェアー「Cadeira」は、オレンジ色の椅子足に、取り外し可能なポリエステルシート製。リクライニングのアングルは、ちょうどいい具合。背もたれが大きく、パッドが入ってるので、座り心地もいい。座席幅も91cmとゆったりしている。私としては欲を言えばフットレスト（足置き）もほしいところだが、座高が低いのでそんなに気にならない。問題は白のカバーが汚れやすい事で、店ではディスプレイ品しか残っていなかったので、既に多少汚れがついている。これで20％引だけとはちょっと不満だが、Mがこれ以外は嫌だというのだから仕方ない。あとは、いつ来るか来ないか分からない、ロンドンの束の間の夏の暑さを待つのみである（先週は30度まで上がる暑さだったそうだが、現在７月中旬近くというのに最高気温は良くて20度ちょっと）。

Now London is in the midst of summer sale season. Outdoor reclining chair M had insisted to buy is 20%off, so we went to buy it at Habitat shop on Tottenam Court Road today.

Habitat is a life style shop selling stylish household furnishings and operates 80 stores in Europe. The chain was founded in 1964 by English designer/restauranteur/retailer Sir Terence Conran, but it was sold to IKANO Group (privately owned by Ingvar Kamprad, the founder of IKEA, and the Kamprad family) in 1992. I thought Habitat is a little more upscale version of IKEA, and now I understand why.

Our new folding outdoor recliner ‘Cadeira‘ is very cute with orange frame and detachable white padded sling. The angle of reclining is perfect, and it is comfortable to sit with large padded backrest. The 91cm seat width is wide enough to change your position. It would be even better if it has a foot rest as well, but the seat height is low so it doesn’t bother much. The only problem is the white seat cover is easy to get dirty – it’s already a bit dirty as we could find only display models (I thought only 20% off was a bit pricy for the display model, but M had to have this but nothing else).  Now what we should do is to wait short London summer which may or may not come – last week was hot and temperature went up above 30º but now, in the middle of July, the highest is just above 20º…

Albion cafe @ The Boundary Hotel

Shoreditch（ショーディッチ）地区に、あのテレンス・コンラン卿がてがけたブティック・ホテル、The Boundaryがオープンした。ビクトリア朝時代の倉庫を改造したホテルには、バウハウス、イームズ、コルビジェ等1室ごとにインテリアが違う17の客室の他、伝統的なイギリス料理とフレンチを提供するレストランレストラン、カフェ・デリが入っている。客室と屋上のバー／レストランは4月にオープン予定。
写真は、1階にあるカフェ、Albion。白を基調とした、カントリースタイルをモダンにアレンジした店内では、伝統的なイギリスの軽食やデザート類が楽しめる。朝8時から12時まで、毎日やっているのも嬉しい。ホクストンやBrick Lane（ブリックレーン）、Spitalfields （スピタルフィールド）Marketからも歩ける距離なので、近くに来た際は覗いてみて下さい。

Sir Terence Conran’s new boutique hotel, The Boundary, just opened in Shoreditch, in January 2009. The Boundery, is in a converted Victorian warehouse, and contains a restaurants, serves classic English/French, and an all-day cafe with mini food store. The hotel’s bedrooms, decorated with different design theme inspired by legendary designers or design movements, and a rooftop bar and grill will open in April.

The pictures are of the Albion, a cafe on the 1st floor. The decor of the cafe is a country style based on white, arranged with modern twist. You can enjoy Brits’ favorite food all day from 8am to midnight, 7 days a week! Hoxton, Brick Lane, and Spitalfields Market is within a walking distance.
