Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Memorial Project @ University College Hospital

先日、検査のために、UCLH（University College Hospital／ロンドン大学病院）に行ってきた。検査が行われたUniversity College Hospital Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Wingは、7000万ポンドをかけた改装の末、2008年11年にオープンした、産婦人科病棟。病棟に冠されているElizabeth Garrett Anderson（エリザベス・ギャレット・アンダーソン）は、まだ医学学校が女性に門戸を開いていなかったヴィクトリア朝時代のイギリスで、医師の資格を得た初めての女性で、1870年代に女性のための病院 New Hospital for Women（1918年にElizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospitalと改名）を、ロンドンに設立した。

その病棟の中に飾られていたアート作品が目についたので、ググって調べてみた。これはマルチメディア・アーティスト、Carl Jaycock（カール・ジェイコック）の「Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Memorial Project」という作品で、病棟で働く1000人以上の全てのスタッフのイメージをデジタル処理してモザイク状に組み合わせ、病院の創設者のエリザベス・ギャレット・アンダーソンのイメージを浮かび上がらせたもの。遠くから見るとアンダーソンの姿が、近寄って見ると無数のスタッフの顔が見て取れる。色合いもレトロでいてモダンに仕上がっており、某お菓子のように1粒で2度美味しい、巧妙でよく出来た作品だと思う。

I went to UCLH (University College Hospital) the other day for medical check-up. University College Hospital Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Wing, where I took the test, is the hospital that offers women’s health services, and it opened in November 2008 after the £70 million refurbishment. Elizabeth Garrett Anderson was the first woman to gain a medical qualification in Britain when British medical schools closed their door to women, and set up the New Hospital for Women (later renamed the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital in 1918)  in London in 1870s.

I found interesting artworks at the hospital, and googled it after I came back. “Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Memorial Project” is an art memorial project created by a multimedia visionary artist Carl Jaycock. He created a digital mosaic artwork for main entrance and wards, combining all the 1000s staff and references to its Victorian founder Elizabeth Garrett Anderson. The colors used in the works feel retro but modern at the same time. You see Anderson from far, and spot hundreds of tiny portraits of the staff when you get closer – very clever & well done.

Decode: Digital Design Sensations @ V&A

ヴィクトリア&アルバート博物館（V&A）で8日から始まった、Decode: Digital Design Sensations（〜2010年4月11日）。デジタルアーツ複合組織で、クロスメディアの製作会社であるonedotzero（ワン・ドット・ゼロ）と共同企画された「Decode（解読）」は、Daniel Brown（ダニエル・ブラウン）、 Golan Levin（ゴラン・レヴィン）、 Daniel Rozin（ダニエル・ローズィン）、 Troika（トロイカ）、 Karsten Schmidt（カーステン・シュミット）など、国際的に有名なアーティストやデザイナーの、小さなスクリーンのグラフィック作品から大規模なインタラクティブ・インスタレーションまで、最新のデジタルアートやインタラクティブ・デザインを展示。作品は、コンピュータのコードを使って創り出された「Code（コード）」、ビジターの動きや仕草に反応して変化する「Interactivity（インタラクティブな双方向的コミュニケーション）」、そして最新のテクノロジーや日常生活のコミュニケーションで使われるネットワークシステム（インターネットやメール等）を利用した「Network（ネットワーク）」の3つのテーマに分かれている。

現代のテクノロジーを駆使した作品を集めたこの「Decode」は、先週のオープンした何百年も前の美術品のコレクションであるMedieval & Renaissance Galleriesと対照的だ。まあ好き嫌いはあるとしても、私は結構好き。「Network」の作品はずっと見ていたら頭がクラクラしそうなものもあるし、「Code」はカラフルすぎたり、コンピュータオタクが気合い入れて作りました的な作品が多いけれど（でもTroikaのDigital Zoetrope／デジタル式回転のぞき絵は好き）、「Interactivity」の作品はかなり楽しめる。大の大人が前で飛んだり跳ねたり、カメラの前で変な顔をしたり、人を見ているだけでも面白い。私のお気に入りは、前にいる人のシルエットが映るダニエル・ローズィンの「Weave Mirror（編まれた鏡）」（後ろついているたくさんのワイヤも見えるようになっている）や、先っぽについた電球が花のように見えるDaan Roosegaarde（ダーン・ローズガールデ）の「Dune」です。

New exhibition of Victoria & Albert Museum, Decode: Digital Design Sensations (Dec 8.09 – Apr 11.10). Curated in collaboration with leading digital arts organization onedotzero, Decode displays the latest developments in digital art and interactive design, from small screen graphics to large-scale interactive installations, by prominent international artists and designers such as Daniel Brown, Golan Levin, Daniel Rozin, Troika and Karsten Schmidt. The exhibition explores three themes: Code presents pieces that use computer code to create new designs; Interactivity shows works that are directly influenced by the viewer and visitors can interact with the displays; and Network focuses on works made by means of advanced technologies and ‘networks’, everyday communications such as internet and e-mails.

This exhibition which is dedicated to modern technology makes a big contrast with last week’s opening of new Medieval & Renaissance Galleries. You may like or not, I was quite impressed: some works in the Network section made me dizzy with lines, dots and stuffs, and the Code themed pieces were too colorful and geeky (Digital Zoetrope by Troika is pretty cool, though), but the Interactivity part was pretty fun. I also enjoyed looking at grown-up adults jumping up and down or making funny face in front of the camera. My favorite works are Weave Mirror by Daniel Rozin; silhouettes of the people in front of it reflects on weaved shiny plates – you can see hundreds of wires on the back of it,  and Dune by Daan Roosegaarde, which looks like a lot of flowers gleaming in the dark – very superb.
