英大手デパート・John Lewis（ジョン・ルイス）がつくった、今年のクリスマスシーズンのTVコマーシャルが大好評。制作費用なんと600万ポンド、約250人の中から選ばれた7歳のスコットランド人少年、Lewis McGowan（ルイス・マッゴーワン）くんを起用したこの1分30秒のこのコマーシャル、現在YouTubeで300万回以上の再生回数を記録する大ヒットとなった。人気ビデオにつきものの、パロディー動画も登場。スタンリー・キューブリックの「Shining（シャイニング）」のテーマ曲を使ったり、ホラー映画の予告に似せたりと、ホラー系に作り替えたものが話題を呼んだ（参考：サン紙）。

むすっとした顔で、今か今かとクリスマスを待つルイスくん。そして待ちに待ったクリスマスの朝、ベッド近くに積まれた自分自身へのプレゼントも開けず、真っ先にに両親の元へクリスマスプレゼントを届けに走っていく、というストーリー。ルイスくんは可愛いけど、私的には少し長すぎて退屈。そして見え見えのお涙頂戴演出にも、ちょっと興醒めする。

UK’s department store chain, John Lewis‘s Christmas TV advert 2011 has become a big sensation. This 90-second advert which cost £6 million to make, has been viewed over 3 million times on YouTube so far. Spoof videos have also popped up online, which  is more like a piece of horror movie or its trailer, using the same visuals but with scary music such as the theme of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (the Sun article).

In the advert, 7-year-old Scottish boy Lewis McGowan, who was chosen from 250 candidates, is impatiently counting down the time with frown face for Christmas day to arrive. When it finally comes, the he rushes out from his bed, and runs to fetch the gift he has for his parents, without opening his own presents stucked up next his bed. Yes he is cute, but for me, it is a bit too long and boring. Also the tear-jerking formula, adorable little boy doing a sweet thing, makes me fed up!

Grand Opening of Westfield Stratford City: the Biggest Shopping Centre in Europe

2012年オリンピック・パークの横に建設されていた、ヨーロッパ最大となるショッピングセンター、Westfield Stratford City（ウェストフィールド・ストラットフォード・シティ）が、今日オープンした。その初日には、開店特別割引を求めて1万人以上の人々が来店、何人かは一番乗りを目指して20時間も行列を作って待っていたそうだ。ロンドン市長ボリス・ジョンソンやオーストラリア資本のWestfield group関係者によるお決まりのテープカットで開店。オープニングイベントとして、元プッシーキャット・ドールズのリードシンガーでF1ドライバーのルイス・ハミルトンの彼女、ニコール・シャージンガーのパフォーマンスが行われた。→ 写真や詳細はこちら： Telegraph | Daily Mail | the Sun

Shepherd’s Bush（シェファーズ・ブッシュ）のWestfield London（オープン３年経ってもまだ行ったことがないけど）に続いて出来たこのショッピングセンター、総工費は約14.5億ポンド。サッカー場約25つ分の190万平方フィート（約17万6516平方メートル）の広さを誇り、John Lewis（ジョン・ルイス）やMarks and Spencer（マークス＆スペンサー）の2大デパートを含む300以上のショップ、飲食店約70軒、ホテル3軒、14スクリーンある映画館、ボーリング場、そしてイギリス最大のカジノ（カジノがイギリスで合法だと知らなかった）がテナントとして入っている。まだオープンしていない店舗もちらほら見えるけれど、クリスマスまでには全て開店する予定。来年のオリンピックの大きな目玉の一つになると期待されている。このショッピングセンターの開店に伴い、店員1万人を含む約1万8000の仕事が創り出され、そのうち約20％の仕事は地元の失業者に割り当てられたそうだ。

この華々しい巨大ショッピングセンターのオープンは、IOCがどれだけ美辞麗句を並べ立てようが、オリンピックが大ビジネスであることを思い出させる。オリンピックを主催するには、何と言っても投資とお金が必要で、貧乏国には無理。その証拠に、2004年のホスト国ギリシャが巨額のローンを抱えて、破綻寸前のはご存知の通り。別に商業主義を批判している訳じゃないし、お金を出すならリターンを求めるのは仕方ないことだと思うけれど、オリンピズムなど白々しい理想論を掲げて、誤摩化さなくてもいいんじゃないかと思う。どうせ皆知ってるんだし。

The Europe’s biggest shopping centre, Westfield Stratford City located next to the 2012 Olympic park in east London, opened its door to the public today. Over 10,000 shoppers, some queued for up to 20 hours, flowed in the shopping centre to grab a bargain with Day One special discounts, and enjoyed a performance by Nicole Scherzinger, the former singer of the Pussycat Dolls and girlfriend of F-1 driver Lewis Hamilton, as well as less excited ceremony of cutting ribbon by London mayor Boris Johnson, together with gangs of the Australian Westfield group. It will be one of the big attraction for visitors to next summer’s Olympics. → See photos & details: Telegraph | Daily Mail | the Sun

A sister mall of Westfield London in Shepherd’s Bush (I still haven’t never been after 3 years of opening!), this £1.45 billion & 1.9 million ft² (=about 25 football pitches!) shopping centre houses more than 300 stores, including John Lewis and Marks and Spencer occupying large areas of the mall,  70 restaurants, a 14-screen cinema, three hotels, a bowling alley and the UK’s largest casino (I didn’t know that casino is legal in UK). However, some retail spaces are still unopened but are expected to open before Christmas. It is estimated that the centre has created around 18,000 permanent jobs including 10,000 in shops, about 20% of which went to the local long-term unemployed.

This event is another reminder for me that the Olympic is all (at least big part of it, if not all) about business, no matter what idealistic and pompous words IOC uses. You need investment and money to host the Games and poor countries cannot afford to. And whoever pay for it wants share. Greece couldn’t afford it but hosted it with huge loans, and has gone bust. I am not complaining or rather understand the system, but I just don’t like hypocrisy to disguise the commercialism – everyone knows it already!

“Trash” Britannia Souvenir Shop @ Piccadilly Circus

クール・ブリタニア（Cool Britannia）は、20世紀の半ばから後半にかけて、イギリスの現代文化を描写するために使われたメディア用語で、イギリスの愛国歌「ルール・ブリタニア」（”Rule, Britannia”: ブリタニアよ世界を治めよ）をもじったもの。1967年に、ボンゾ・ドッグ・バンド（the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band）の曲のタイトルとして、初めてこの言葉が使われたが、1990年代に再び使われるようになり大流行。トニー・ブレア首相（当時）率いる労働党政権が打ち出した、「第三の道／ニュー・レイバー」路線の初期の頃と密接に関連づけられている。90年代は経済も好調、社会が勢いづいていた時代で、ブラーやオアシス等のブリット・ポップはヒットチャートを賑わし、ダミアン・ハーストやトレイシー・エミン等のヤング・ブリティッシュ・アーティスト（YBA）はアート界に新風を吹き込んだ。ジョン・ガリアーノやアレキサンダー・マックイーン（今日のニュースで、自殺による死が報道された）等の若手ファッションデザイナーも、世界のメジャーなファッションショーで注目を浴びていた。かくいう私たちも、シンプルだけれど洗練されたイギリスのグラフィック・デザイン、そしてこの「クール・ブリタニア」のエネルギーにつられて、1997年にイギリスに引っ越してきたのだ。1997年に総選挙に勝利して、44歳で首相となったブレアは、このトレンドを政策にも取り込み、国家戦略として、「クールでかっこいい」イギリスを世界に売り込もうとした。

しかし！今日、ピカデリー・サーカスで、この言葉を冒涜する輩を発見した。それが、この「Cool Britannia」という土産物店。店の真ん中には、ルーフにイギリス国旗がルーフに描かれたミニ・クーパーが置かれ、ビーフィーターの格好をさせられたおじさんが、観光客と記念撮影している。店名から、イギリス・ブランドやスタイリッシュな商品を扱っていると思いきや、中は「クール」とはほど遠い、安物の中国製品で溢れ返っている。結構旅行者で賑わっていたのが悲しい。以前から思っていたのだが、ロンドンには、素敵な土産物屋さんが少なく、南アジア系の人たちが経営しているチープで粗悪品を売る土産物屋が氾濫している。それで、「Cool Britannia」を初めて見た時に、やっとまともな土産物屋ができたのかと思ったら、このざま。。。

ロンドンでお土産を買う時は、デパートか専門店、または美術館や博物館のミュージアム・ショップで。割高だけれど、品質もデザインも格段に上。もし予算に限りがあるなら、スーパーマーケットやドラッグストアで。素敵なパッケージのお手軽な商品が手に入ります。

Cool Britannia is a media term that was used during the mid-to-late 20th century to describe the contemporary British culture.  It is a pun on the title of the British patriotic song Rule, Britannia!, and the phrase “Cool Britannia” was first used in 1967 as a song title by the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band. The term was commonly used during the 1990s, when the country was enjoying growing economy and good vibes. Britpop groups such as Blur and Oasis hit the world’s charts, and Young British Artists (YBAs) like Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin created a new wave of unconventional contemporary art (although personally I don’t fancy them). Young fashion designers like John Galliano and Alexander McQueen (whose sudden death, possibly suicide was reported today) grabbed the spectator’s attention on catwalks around the world. M and I also attracted to the simple but stylish British Graphic Design and the energy of “Cool Britannia”, and decided to move to London. Cool Britannia was closely associated with the early years of “New Labour” under Tony Blair, who won the election in 1997 and became a prime minister. Blair tried to incorporate the trend in his policy and launched  the Creative Industries Task Force, intending to sell ‘Cool’ Britain to the world.

But!! Today I found a shop which completely misuse the concept of “Cool Britannia” in the center of Piccadilly Circus. In the middle of the shop, you see a Mini with British flag on its rooftop and a sad-looking man in Beefeater costume, being photographed by some tourists. You may get an impression that the shop carries full of cool British brands and hip products, but in fact there is full of cheap trash made in China. It is sad to see some tourists were shopping around quite happily. There are not many decent souvenir shops in London, but lots of South Asian (look like) owned shops selling cheap, bad quality and terrible designed goods. So when I saw the “Cool Britannia” shop at first, I thought finally I found a nice place to buy a souvenir….

When you want to buy a souvenir in London, ignore these trashy shops, and go to department stores, specialty stores, or museum shops – more costly, but much better quality and design. If you only have a small budget, go to supermarkets and drugstores. You can find products in nice packages with small price tags.

クリスマスの翌日26日は、Boxing Day（ボクシング・デー）。イギリスでは、前日のクリスマスとともにバンク・ホリデー（国民の休日）とされている。今年はボクシング・デーは土曜日なので、振替休日として月曜日も休みとなる。クリスマス、ボクシング・デーが土・日にあたる場合は、翌月曜・火曜日が休日になる。

26日は元々「聖スティーヴンの日（St. Stephen’s Day）」で、イエス・キリストが神の子であると述べ伝えた廉でユダヤ人によって石打の刑に処された殉教者ステファノを偲ぶ日だった。イギリスでいつ頃名前が変わったか不明だが、ボクシング・デーの由来は、教会が設置した貧しい人たちのための寄付箱（box）を開ける日であったとか、昔クリスマスにも働かなければならなかった使用人に、主人が箱（box）にプレゼントとボーナスを入れ、クリスマス翌日に渡していたからだ、等の説がある。今でも、牛乳や郵便、新聞配達人等に、チップやプレゼントを配ったり、この時期に合わせてボーナスを支給したりする会社もあるそうだ。

この日は、家族が団らんしたり、上流階級では猟犬を伴って狐刈りに出かける（fox hunting）のがイギリスの伝統だが、近年では、ショッピングとスポーツの日でもある。サッカーやラグビー等の試合が組まれ、この日は遠方のチームでなく、地元同士が対戦するなわらしだ。また、1年最大のバーゲンセール開始の日でもあり、人気の店では、朝早くから行列ができる。上のビデオは、開店直後のセルフリッジズ・デパート。みんな叫ぶわ走るわ、鬼気迫るものがある。朝5時には、4000人もの人が、9時の開店を待っていたそうだ。今年も一番乗りの女性は、朝2時から並んでいたと言う、気合いの入れよう。何年か前のボクシング・デーに、セルフリッジズに行ったが、午後だったにも関わらずたくさんの人で賑わっており、人疲れして何も買えず帰って来た。

今年は、不況のせいもあり、一部の店はクリスマス前にセールを前倒しにしたり、多くの店がインターネット上で一足先にセールを行っているにも関わらず、今年のボクシング・デーは土曜日、また景気対策のために暫定的に15％に下げられていた付加価値税（VAT: Value-Added Tax）が1月1日から17.5％に戻ることもあり、空前の人混みだったそうだ。アメリカン・エクスプレスの資産によると、セール総額は30億ポンド以上にものぼると予測されている。

Boxing Day is a bank and public holiday in UK, and is traditionally celebrated on 26 December, St. Stephen’s Day, commemorates St Stephen who is the first Christian martyr or protomartyr, the day after Christmas Day. Boxing Day is on Saturday this year, so following Monday will be a public holiday. If Christmasy day is a Saturday or Sunday, then both the Monday and Tuesday may be public holidays.

The origin of its name ‘Boxing’ Day is not determined, but one theory is that December 26 was traditionally the day to open the Christmas ‘Box’ to share the contents with the poor. Another theory is that it was a day the servants had a day off from their duties and received a ‘box’ of gifts and bonus from their masters. In modern times, many families still follow this tradition, giving a present or tip to a milkman, a postman, and a news boy. Also some companies give a bonus to their employees around this time.

Traditionally Boxing Day is a time for family and for traditional fox hunting, but also is known as a day of shopping and sports. Premier League as well as the lower divisions and Rugby Football leagues hold matches on Boxing Day. Traditionally matches on Boxing Day are played against local rivals. Also it is the first day of the biggest sale season and the busiest shopping day of the year. Many shoppers wait for the store opening in a queue from early morning  to bag a bargain. Around 4,000 started queuing from 5am outside Selfridges department store. A woman at the first of the waiting line arrived the store at 2 am in the morning in freezing cold! The video above is the scene at the Selfridges department store when the door opened – people shout and run as soon as they came inside, and it is pretty horrifying. I cannot understand how much effort people can make, just for shopping. We went to Selfridges on Boxing Day few years ago. It was so crowded, even it was late afternoon, that we came back home empty handed, completely exhausted.

This year some stores started their sales before Christmas and many had already launched their sales online. But the biggest ever Boxing Day shopping spree is recorded today, because this year’s Boxing Day is on Saturday, and the current temporary 15% VAT rate will return to 17.5% on January 1st. Research by American Express suggests that more than £3 billion will be spent in the sales.

“Made in England” Tea Towel @ Selfridges

妹の誕生日プレゼントに買った、ティータオル（洗った食器類を拭く布巾）。オックスフォード・ストリートにあるデパート・Selfridgesの地下の台所用品売り場に設置された、国旗をデザインしたマグカップやティーポット、クッションカバー、ジャム等イギリス産の品物を集めたコーナーで見つけた。王冠のロゴに50年代風のデザインが可愛い。製造元のPintuckによると、デザイン、プリント、縫製まで全工程をすべてイングランドで行っているそうだ。イギリス土産にぴったりだ。

Selfridges（セルフリッジズ）オックスフォード・ストリート店は、ハロッズに次ぐイギリスで2番目に大きい高級デパートで、オックスフォード・ストリートで最大の店舗。アメリカ人実業家・ハリー・ゴードン・セルフリッジズによって1909年に創業、今年100周年を迎えた。買い物を単なる用事としてではなく、「fun adventure（楽しい冒険）」にしたいと考えた創業者の理念は今でも生きており、Selfridgesのユニークで遊び心のあるウィンドー・ディスプレイは、いつも話題をさらう。ちなみに、ショーウィンドウの導入や、店内にレストランとトイレを設けたのも、Selfridgesが最初なんだそうだ。Selfridgesの、流行を取り入れた品揃えやそのセンスの良さには定評があり、流行に敏感な若者にも人気。また中近東の金持ち御用達のデパートとしても有名で、外には何台もの運転手付き高級車が、Selfridgesの黄色い紙バッグをたくさん抱えて戻ってくる主を待っている。Selfridgesの店舗建築もまた優れており、オックスフォード・ストリート店はクラシックな外観だが、Future Systemsがデザインしたモダンなバーミンガム店は、市の新しいシンボルとなっている。

I bought this tea towel (dish towel, a cloth which is used to dry dishes and cutlery etc) for my sister’s birthday. I found it at the corner displaying “British products” such as jam, mugs and cushion covers with British national flags, in the kitchen and household department on the lower ground floor of the Selfridges Oxford street store. Its 50’s style design with crowns is very cute. As printed in the large letters, the towel is designed, printed, and sewn in England, according to the producer Pintuck – a perfect English souvenir.

Selfridges Oxford street store is the second largest store after Harrods in the UK, and the largest on Oxford Street. Founded in 1909 by American businessman Harry Gordon Selfridge, this up-market department store celebrates their 100-year anniversary this year. Selfridges was the pioneer of a modern department store, and was the first store to introduce show windows and set up restaurants and customers toilets. The founder’s idea to make shopping a “fun adventure” instead of a chore is still alive, and their unique and fun window displays always come up on peoples’ attention. Selfridges is a favorite department store of young and hip Londoners for its fashionable sense and selection of the trendy products. It is also known as a best-loved shop by rich Middle Easterners, and the expensive cars with chauffeurs are always parked outside, waiting for their ‘masters’ with handful of yellow shopping bags. Selfridge stores are known for architectural excellence. The exterior of Oxford street store is rather classic style, but the Future Systems-designed modern Birmingham store became a new symbol of the city.
