Blue Jasmine @ Everyman Screen on the Green

ロンドン三部作であるMatch Point（マッチポイント）、Scoop （タロットカード殺人事件）、Cassandra’s Dream（ウディ・アレンの夢と犯罪）、そしてVicky Cristina Barcelona（それでも恋するバルセロナ）、Midnight in Paris（ミッドナイト・イン・パリ）、To Rome with Love（ローマでアモーレ）と、近年ヨーロッパで映画を多く撮っていたウディ・アレンの最新作「Blue Jasmine」を見に行った。私はずっと、ウディ・アレンはアメリカ、特にニューヨークを舞台にした人間関係のしがらみを扱ったら天下一品だと思っていたが、Blue Jasmineはドンピシャ。久しぶりに彼の真骨頂を見た気がする。日本ではまだ未公開らしいが、あらすじは以下の通り。

リッチなビジネスマンの夫・Hal（アレック・ボールドウィン）とニューヨークで優雅な生活を送っていたJasmine（ケイト・ブランシェット）は、ある日何もかも失い、サンフランシスコの狭いアパート住むシングルマザーの妹・Ginger（サリー・ホーキンス）の元に転がり込んだ。ジャスミンは精神的に不安定で望まぬ暮らしぶりにうまく適応できず、精神安定剤とウォッカの助けで何とかこの苦境に耐えている。「負け犬（losers）」のような妹の元夫やボーイフレンドの下品さにも我慢できない。自分の洗練されたスタイルとテイストを活かしてインテリアデザイナーとして成功するという苦し紛れに思いいた夢をかなえるため、仕方なく歯科医の受付として働くが、そこでは医者のセクハラに遭う。そこに現れたのが、ジャスミンの美しさとエレガントさに一目惚れした外交官のDwight（ピーター・サースガード）。過去の栄光を取り戻す希望の星となるかと思えたが、彼女が自身の過去についてついた嘘が悲劇的な結末をもたらす。

この映画はコメディだ。可笑しいんだけれど、優しくて金持ちの夫と豪邸に住み、ニューヨークの社交界で華やかな生活を送っていた女性が家族も財産も全て失い、プライドだけが残った彼女にとって堪え難い「普通」の生活の中で精神を病んでいく姿が痛々しい。最初は鼻持ちならないと思ったけれど、それでも一縷の望みを頼りに必死に生きていこうとするジャスミンに最後は深い同情を覚える。そんなジャスミン役のケイト・ブランシェットの演技も素晴らしい。男性のウッディ・アレンが、自分の人生を守るために夫の違法行為に目をつぶったり小さな嘘をついたりする、女性の心の機微を見事に表現したのにも感心した。笑って泣ける、私的に5つ星のオススメ作品。

久しぶりに行ったエンジェルの映画館・Screen on the Green （過去ブログ参照）は、今はEverymanというアートハウス系映画館の傘下となっていた。それに伴ってか、後ろ2列が居心地のいいソファー席になっていて、料金に2ポンド追加で家のリビングのように寛げる。後ろにはカフェ／バーもあり、コーヒーやワインを飲みながら映画を見ることも出来る。この映画館もお薦め。

Many of Woody Allen‘s recent films were shot in Europe, some of them in London such as Match Point, Scoop, and Cassandra’s Dream and others in Barcelona (Vicky Cristina Barcelona), Paris (Midnight in Paris)  and Rome (To Rome with Love). But I always think that he is a master when he portrays relationship issues among intellectuals and high society in New York, and his latest work, Blue Jasmine, is the one and the very best in recent years for me. Here is the synopsis.

After everything in her life falls to pieces, including her marriage to wealthy businessman Hal (Alec Baldwin), elegant New York socialite Jasmine (Cate Blanchett) moves into her sister Ginger’s (Sally Hawkins) modest apartment in San Francisco. Jasmine is in a fragile mental state and depends on anti-depressants and vodka. She doesn’t cope well with her undesired new life and still behaves like an aristocrat, and calls her sister’s boyfriend and ex-husband ‘losers’. She reluctantly works as the receptionist in a dentist’s office, with a improvised goal to study to be a successful interior designer with her sophisticated taste. One day, Jasmine meets Dwight (Peter Sarsgaard), a diplomat who is quickly smitten with her beauty, sophistication and style, and finds a hope to get back to high life. However, her lies about her past lead to another catastrophic blow to Jasmine.

This comedy-drama hilariously but painfully portrays fall of a woman who had everything but lost everything except her pride. I was annoyed with Jasmine’s arrogance at the beginning but gradually started to feel sympathy and to pity her. She is forced to live like an ‘ordinary’ people that causes her a nervous breakdown, but she tries to cope with hardship in her own way though a bit clumsy and bit unrealistic. Cate Blanchett did play the role perfectly, and I can’t think about any actress who can do better than her. Also I am impressed Woody Allen as a man, can perfectly describe woman’s nature – closing one eye on her husband’s infidelity and illegal activity or telling a ‘little’ lie to protect her own happiness. I give this film a 5-star.

I didn’t go to Angel’s cinema Screen on the Green (past blog) for a long time, and during the break, the cinema has become a part of Everyman Cinemas. Accordingly, comfy sofa seating called ‘Premier Seat’ is introduced at the last two rows, and there you can enjoy a film like you are in your living room, with extra £2.00. There is a café/bar at the back that serves you a refreshment at your own seat. The cinema is also recommended.

ITV “Injustice” Advertising Campaign

最近、街角の電光掲示板や新聞でよく見た広告シリーズ。これは、ITVで6月6日〜10日まで放送予定の、ジェームズ・ピュアフォイ主演の犯罪ドラマ「Injustice」のもの。黒白の切り絵のような銃やナイフをあしらったデザインが印象的だ。

ITVは、1955年9月に放送を開始したイギリス最大で最古の民間放送局。以前はドキュメンタリーや社会問題を扱った番組などが多かったそうだけれど、90年代後半から、Coronation Street（コロネーション・ストリート）やEmmerdaleなどのソープ・オペラ（連続メロドラマ。日本と違い、昼じゃなく夕方に放映）やリアリティ番組が多くなったそう。ITVは娯楽やスポーツ番組がほとんどなので、私たちもあんまり見ない。

ちなみに去年、アップル社が Apple TVを、iPhoneやiPod、iPadなどと同様「iTV」に変えるという噂を受け、ITVが対決姿勢を表明していたそう（参考ブログ）。未だに名前が変わっていないところを見ると、アップルが法廷での争いに負けると見越して諦めたか、もしくは単なる噂だったのか。

I have seen this advertising campaign on the streets and newspapers many times recently. These ads are of ITV‘s “Injustice,“ a 5–part series (June 6 – 20) starring James Purefoy as a criminal barrister recovering from traumatic events. Its black & white silhouette design is quite striking, with images of knife and gun.

ITV is the biggest and the oldest commercial television network in the UK, having begun broadcasting in 1955. ITV used to produce strong current affairs and documentary programs, according to Wikipedia. But from the late 1990s it has changed its direction and now its TV listings are full of entertainment programs;  soap operas, such as Coronation Street and Emmerdale, “reality TV” like Celebrity Fit Club and Love Island, and sports. We rarely watch the channel because there are no programs really appealing to us…

One interesting episode of ITV. ITV said that it would “vigorously defend” its brand and reputation, if, as rumoured, Apple renames its Apple TV to “iTV”, as in a series of their popular product names like iPhone, iPod, or iPad (Telegraph article). Apple TV is still “Apple TV”, so I guess it was just a rumor or Apple gave up assuming that they are going to loose the legal battle.

今日、バービカン・シネマで月曜割引を利用して、映画「Up in the Air（邦題：マイレージ、マイライフ）」を観た。先週金曜日に封切りした、Up in the Airは（邦題が嫌いなので、ブログでは原題で書きます）、アカデミー賞監督賞にノミネートされた「JUNO/ジュノ」や、タバコ産業のロビイストを皮肉った「サンキュー・スモーキング」の、カナダ出身のジェイソン・ライトマンが監督、ジョージ・クルーニー主演のコメディドラマ。以下あらすじにはネタバレがありますので、読みたくない方はスキップしてください。

ライアン・ビンガム（ジョージ・クルーニー）は、ネブラスカ州オマハに本社を置く企業のリストラ対象者に解雇を通告する「リストラ宣告人」。また彼が各地で講演する自己啓発スピーチ「What’s In Your Backpack?（あなたのカバンの中身は何？）」では、人との関係や物欲に煩わされない人生哲学を説く。年間322日もアメリカ国内を飛び回るライアンの目標は、アメリカン航空（どーんとロゴが出るので、映画のスポンサーと思われる）のマイレージを1000万マイル貯めること。そんな中、出張先で、同じく出張で各地を飛び回るビジネス・ウーマン、アレックス（ヴェラ・ファーミガ）と出会い、気ままでカジュアルな関係をスタートさせる。ところが、彼の勤める会社では、若い新入社員ナタリー（アナ・ケンドリック）が出張コスト削減のため、インターネット面接で解雇通告することを提案。彼自身がリストラ対象となってしまう。ライアンの上司は、彼女には従業員を解雇するとはどういうことか分かっていないというライアンに、出張にナタリーを同行させるように命令した。旅を続けるうちに、少しずつお互いのことが分かって来た二人だが、ナタリーは、いい歳をして結婚やコミットメントを避け続けるライアンの生き方に疑問を投げかける。ボーイフレンドと一緒にいるために、サンフランシスコからネブラスカくんだりまで移り住んだナタリーだったが、出張中、その彼に携帯メールで別れを告げられ、失意のどん底に陥る。ライアンと、出張で来ていたアレックスは、傷心のナタリーを慰める。ナタリーは、ライアンに、どうしてアレックスとの交際を真剣に考えないのか詰るが、ライアンは自分のポリシーを変えようとしない。そんな中、ナタリーの提案したネット解雇を実践するため、本社に戻るよう連絡があり、二人の旅は終わる。しかし、ライアンはオマハに帰らず、アレックスを誘い、妹の結婚式のためにウィスコンシン州の地元に帰った。煩わしさを嫌い、家族を避け続けてきたライアンだが、母校の高校でアレックスとデートしたり、結婚式当日に怖じ気づいた妹の婚約者の説得に当たったりしているうちに、少しずつ家族や人生の伴侶の大切さに気づくようになった。そして、結婚式が終わり自宅に帰った後、初めて人恋しさを感じたライアンは、講演を投げ出して、アレックスのいるシカゴへと飛ぶ。しかし彼女の自宅を訪ねたライアンは、彼女が既婚者で子供もいることを知ってショックを受ける。その帰途、夢見た1000万マイルを達成し、パイロットやフライト・アテンダントの祝福を受けるが、素直に喜べない。貯めたマイルも、お金がなくて新婚旅行に行けない妹夫婦にプレゼントした。会社に戻った彼は、ボスから、解雇された社員の一人が自殺しナタリーは辞職、インターネット解雇通告も無期延期になったことを告げられた。彼はサンフランシスコに戻って職探しをするナタリーのために、丁寧な推薦状を書く。そして、彼はまたリストラ宣告人として、元の出張漬けの生活に戻るが、以前のように、気ままな独身生活を楽しむことは、もはやできなくなってしまった。。。

昨日発表されたゴールデン・グローブ賞で作品賞、主演男優賞、助演女優賞、脚本賞、監督賞の候補作となり（脚本賞のみ受賞）、アカデミー賞の下馬評も高く、イギリスメディアでも軒並み高い評価を得ているこの作品、最初から最後まで退屈することなく楽しめた。不況、リストラ、独身貴族（死語？）、インターネット社会、有能なビジネス・ウーマン、結婚、企業社会等、現代社会を上手く投影し、かなりの部分で共感できたし、ジョークも冴えていて、深刻な問題も笑いに支えられていて暗くなりすぎない。また若くて恋にも仕事にも理想を持つ23歳のナタリーと、恋愛に現実的な30代のアレックスのコントラストも面白い。そしてその二人に振り回されるクルーニーも、50歳も近いというのに本当にチャーミング。実生活でも独身生活を謳歌する、女たらしで有名なクルーニーも、たまに虚しさを感じたりするのだろうかと思ったりする。そして、最後はお決まりのハッピーエンドにならないところも、ひねくれ者の私の好みに合っている。また、アメリカの大自然や都市の航空写真を使った映画のタイトルデザインも、とても美しく印象に残る。日本では3月20日に公開予定だそうだ。しかし、邦題のセンスのなさ、どうにかならないかしら。

We went to see “Up in the Air” at Barbican Cinema, using Monday discount for £5.50@. Up in the Air, which opened last Friday in UK cinemas, is a comedy drama, directed by Canadian-born Jason Reitman (Academy award nominated Juno and Thank You for Smoking), starring George Clooney. Synopsis below includes a lot of details and ending, so if you haven’t seen the film yet, please feel free to skip the next paragraph.

Ryan Bingham (George Clooney), is a man who makes his living traveling to workplaces around the country and conducting employee layoffs. Ryan also delivers motivational speeches “What’s In Your Backpack?” to encourage a life free of relationships with people and things. Ryan’s life goal is to achieve 10 million frequent flyer miles of American Airlines (I guess that AA is the sponsor of the movie). While traveling, he meets another frequent flyer and business woman, Alex (Vera Farmiga), and they begin a casual relationship. Ryan is called back to his company’s offices in Omaha, Nebraska and finds out that an ambitious young recruit Natalie (Anna Kendrick) is pushing a plan to cut costs by conduct layoffs over the Internet. Ryan argues that Natalie knows nothing about the process of firing people, and his boss assigns him to take Natalie with him on his business travels to show her what it’s like. As they travel together and get to know with each other better, Natalie questions Ryan’s lack of interest in serious relationships, but Ryan is happy to stick to his philosophy. While on the trip, Natalie’s boyfriend dumps her via text message, leaving her devastated – she even moved to Nebraska from San Francisco to be with him. Ryan and Alex, who is there for business, console her and take her with them to crash a conference party at their hotel. The day after, Natalie gets upset to know Ryan’s reluctance to consider a commitment to Alex. Soon after they are called back to Omaha to begin Natalie’s internet layoff program. Instead of returning to Omaha, Ryan decides to invite Alex to his sister’s wedding in Wisconsin. Reunion with his sisters whom he has been avoiding all these years and a happy time with Alex make him realize that there is something more important than being ‘free’ and obsessed with earning mileage. After Ryan comes back home, he feels lonely for the first time. He walks out from his “What’s In Your Backpack?” speech, and flies to see Alex in Chicago. However, when she opens the door, Ryan realizes that she is a married woman with young children. On the flight back home, the crew announces that Ryan has just achieved his 10-million-mile mark, but he cannot get excited by it. Back in Omaha, Ryan calls the airline to transfer miles to his sister and her new husband, who cannot afford to go to honeymoon, so that they’ll be able to fly around the world. Ryan’s boss comes in and tells Ryan that one of the employees he and Natalie fired committed suicide. Natalie has resigned and the company wants to send Ryan back to continue face-to-face layoffs. Ryan writes an impressive letter of recommendation for Natalie for her new job in San Francisco. Ryan goes back to his previous life, but he cannot enjoy it anymore…

Up in the Air is nominated in 5 categories of yesterday’s Golden Globe Awards and also expected to be nominated in Academy Award next March. British media also gives this film a good review, and we enjoyed the film from the beginning to the end, without getting bored for a second. Keywords in modern society, such as recession, layoffs, marriage and relationship, internet, and work, are well incorporated in the film, and I understood and fell empathy for the most of the parts. The real-life humor is superb, and we laughed a lot through the showing time. The contrast between 23 years old Natalie, young and naive, with more realistic and down-to-earth 30s something Alex, makes me reflect myself when I was young and compare to who I am now – I completely agree with Alex now, unfortunately. Cloony, who is almost 50, is still so charming! His role in the film makes me wonder if he, who also enjoy being single, ever feels lonely and empty in his own life as well. I also like the ending which doesn’t fall into the same old happy ending. The opening title sequence using aerial photos of American great natures and cities are so beautiful and impressive, and it is one of my favorites.
