Covent Garden（コベント・ガーデン）のLong Acre（ロングエーカー）に出来た、ちょっとポッシュなイタリアン・デリ＆レストラン、Machiavelli。店名はルネッサンス期のイタリア人政治思想家、ニッコロ・マキャヴェッリから取っており、店内の柱はマキャヴェッリのさまざまな肖像画で飾られている。同一人物なのに、全然違う顔に描かれているのが面白い。地上、地下と2フロアある店内は、エレガントだけれど気取りなく、センスよくまとめられている。入口左手の棚には売り物のコーヒーカップやカラフェなどが整然と飾られ、奥の棚にはテイクアウト用フードやドリンク類、そしてワインや食品類が並ぶ。
ショーケースの中のお惣菜やサンドイッチ、ケーキなどの他、ランチやディナータイムには、メニューから前菜やメインもオーダーできる。行った時は、ちょうどキッチンをクローズしたところで、あいにく出来合いのお惣菜しかチョイスがなかったが、輸入イタリア食材のサプライヤーでもあるMachiavelliの大皿に載せられたデリ・フードはどれもおいしそう。この日はパスタとグリル野菜のマリネを注文。パスタは、ちょっと焦げて固くなった部分もあるけれど、味付けは悪くない。でもマリネは上出来。食後のエスプレッソと一緒に、チョコレート・コーティングされた一口アイスDai Dai Bocconciniをいただいた。このアイスが何とも癖になる味。ぜひ試してみて！
Machiavelli is a new posh Italian deli & restaurant on Long Acre, Covent Garden. The place was named after a Renaissance Italian philosopher, Niccolò Machiavelli, and the columns are covered with different portraits of Machiavelli. Those portraits are of the same person, but interestingly they all look different. Machiavelli, consisting of two floors, ground floor and basement, is decorated in country-chic style and its interior is unpretentious but elegant and sophisticated. Coffee cups and carafes for sale are neatly on display on the shelves near the entrance, and you can find take-away foods and drinks as well as imported Italian grocery are placed on the other side.
You can order deli foods and sandwiches as well as cakes and pastries, and also made-to-order menu is available during lunch and dinner time. The kitchen just closed when we arrived and we had to order from deli counter, but all looked superb – probably because Machiavelli is also an imported Italian food supplier. We ordered daily pasta and marinated grilled vegetable on that day. Some pasta was burned and got a bit hard, but the taste was not bad. But the vegetables was quite good, actually. Then we had a cup of espresso with a bite size chocolate-coated Tuscan ice cream Dai Dai Bocconcini – this was quite addictive. You must try when you go to Machiavelli!
