Lido Café Bar @ Serpentine, Hyde Park

ハイドパークにあるLido Café Barは、サーペンタイン・レイクの南に面した、気持ちのいいカフェ＆バー。以前は、ちょっと薄暗い感じだったけれど、2010年春に、Kensington Gardens（ケンジントン・ガーデンズ）やThe Regent’s Park（リージェンツ・パーク）、サウスバンク・センターのRiverside Terrace Café、Royal Opera House（ロイヤル・オペラ・ハウス）のレストランを手がけるCompany of Cooksに経営が引き継がれてから、懐かしい感じのするレトロなインテリアの、明るいスペースに生まれ変わった。改装後は、タイムアウト誌の「London’s best park cafés」（2010年4月）や「London’s best cafés with fountains」（2010年7月）の一つにも選ばれている。

中にも席はあるけれど、天気のいい日は是非外で。ボート遊びをするカップルや家族連れ、池に投げ込まれたパンを取り合いするアヒルたちを眺めながらゆっくりしたい。また「Lido」（屋外水泳プールの意）という名にあるように、そばには屋外水泳場もあり、下着ではしゃいでいる若い女の子のグループや、ウェットスーツを着込んだ、年季の入った年配スイマーたちがガンガン泳いでいるのも見える。

朝8時からオープン、日の長い夏場は9時まで（閉店時間は季節によって違うので確認を）、朝食メニューからサンドイッチ、ピザ、サラダなどの軽食やケーキ類のほか、ハンバーガーやサーモンのフィレ、ステーキなどのちゃんとした食事もできる。今日、私たちは、レバノンの平たいパンをベースにした、トマト、モッツァレラチーズ、ルッコラのピザを注文。トマトソースやフレッシュなロケットとか、味は悪くないんだけれど、ピザ生地はやっぱり正統派イタリアンの方がいい。それにフレッシュなモッツァレラチーズではなく、細切れのプロセスチーズが使われていたのにも、ちょっとがっかり。でも、Riverside Terrace Caféと同じ、シンプルな白い防水紙に包まれたサンドイッチは見た目もフレッシュで美味しそう。チョイスを誤ったか。でも食後のバナナのスライスケーキはちょっと乾燥していたけれど、なかなか。コーヒーも美味しい。近くにある、サーペンタイン・ギャラリーやダイアナ妃記念噴水（Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain）に来た折りに、ちょっと一休みするのにぴったりのカフェだ。

Lido Café Bar in Hyde Park is a pleasant café, facing on the south coast of the Serpentine lake. Refurbished and taken over early this year by Company of Cooks, which manages food&drink venues in the Kensington Gardens and the Regent’s Park as well as Southbank’s Riverside Terrace Café and Royal Opera House restaurant, Lido has been transformed to cheerful retro-chic space from previously gloomy and a bit depressing decor. Now Lido is chosen as one of the “London’s best park cafés (April 2010)” and “London’s best cafés with fountains (July 2010)” by the Time Out magazine.

There are indoor and outdoor seating areas, but you should sit at an outside table when it is a nice day. You can enjoy looking at couples and families enjoying the day on a boat, or ducks pecking and fighting for a piece of bread thrown in. As its name suggests, there is a ‘lido (open-air swimming pool)’ close by and you can see a group of young girls in underwear splashing in the water and experienced old swimmers in wet suits swimming back and forth.

This all-day café opens at 8 am, and until it closes at 9pm in summer time (closing times varies – see the website), offers from breakfast, lunch,  cakes and light meals such as sandwiches and pizzas to full meals like burgers, steak, and salmon fillet. Today we ordered a pizza with tomato and mozzarella cheese with rocket on Lebanese flat bread. The taste was not bad and tomato sauce and rocket were fine, but I prefer traditional Italian pizza dough. The use of shredded cheese instead of fresh mozzarella was another disappointment. Their sandwiches, wrapped with simple white water-proof paper, the same as in the Riverside Terrace Café, looked fresh and delicious – we might have made the wrong choice! However, a slice of banana cake for desert was a bit dry but nice, and the espresso was good. Lido is a perfect place for refreshment and a little rest when you come to next door “Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain” and nearby Serpentine Gallery.

Enjoy Street Ping-Pong in London this Summer

先週、Mがラッセル・スクウェア近くにあるショッピングセンター・Brunswick Centreから、携帯で送ってきた写真。これは、7月24日〜8月22日までの約一ヶ月間、観光地や広場、ショッピングセンター、駅などロンドンの様々な場所にに100台の卓球台が置かれ、誰でも無料でピンポンを楽しめるという、「Ping! London」というイベントの一環で、ラケットとピンポン球が備え付けてある。テート・モダン、テート・ブリテン、バービカン・センター、コベントガーデン、大英図書館、セント・パンクラス駅、ハイドパーク、リージェンツ・パーク、ロンドン自然史博物館、ヒースロー空港ターミナル3等々、多くのメジャーなスポットに設置されているので、ロンドンの住人なら目にした事があるかもしれない（設置場所はここ）。

エキセントリックな言動で有名なボリス・ジョンソン市長は、卓球王国・中国で開催された北京オリンピックの閉会式で、次回の2012年ロンドン・オリンピックのホストとして、「卓球の発祥の地・イギリスに、ピンポンが帰ってくる！」とスピーチし、話題になった（参照記事）。市長によると、卓球は、19世紀にイングランドのダイニング・テーブルで考案され、「whiff-whaff」と呼ばれていたという。後に市長の発言は、世界で最も古いスポーツ用品製造業者「Jacques London」で卓球の「創始者」一家を自認する一族の末裔に否定され、論争の的となった（参照記事）。

その真偽の程は不明だが、日の長いロンドンの夏、パブで消費したビールのカロリー分、卓球に汗流すのいいかもしれない。

M sent me the mobile photo above from Brunswick Shopping Centre near Russell Square last week. This is a part of four-week event called “Ping! London” (July 24 to August 22), that 100 ping-pong tables pop up across London’s landmarks, squares, shopping centres, estates, offices and train stations. Bats and balls are supplied, and anyone can play for free. The locations include Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Barbican Centre, Covent Garden, British Library, St. Pancras International Station, Hyde Park, Regent’s Park, Natural History Museum, and even Heathrow’s Terminal 3 – anyone who live in London may have seen it somewhere (here for all locations).

Well-known eccentric London Mayor Boris Johnson stunned UK with an astonishing speech at the Beijing Olympic closing ceremony, declaring ‘Ping pong is coming home!’, at the heart of Ping-Pong empire of the world (see details here). According to the mayor, ping-pong was invented on the dining tables of England in the 19th century, and it was called “whiff whaff”. Later his claim has been attacked by the descendants of the world’s oldest sporting and games manufacturer “Jacques London“, who claim that their Jaques family was first to codify the game (see details here).

I am not sure what is the truth, but whatever the truth, it may be a good idea to play ping-pong to shed some calories off from your body, after having a pint of beer at a pub, under long daylight during London’s short but nice summer.

The Riverfront Café & Bar @ BFI Southbank

サウス・バンクにあるBFIサウス・バンク（英国映画協会が持つ映画館）の1階にある、Riverfront Café（リバーフフロント・カフェ）。改装の末、2009年3月に再オープン。以前は、外の木の長テーブルからの眺めも良く、気候のいい頃はたくさんの人が集まる憩いの場だったけれど、中はごみごみしていて利用したことはなかった。今は、ハイドパークにあるSerpentine Bar & Kitchen（サーペンタイン・バー＆キッチン）と同じく、サンドイッチチェーン・Benugo（ベヌーゴ）の経営になり、インテリアもモダンな、すっきりゆったりとした居心地の良いカフェに生まれ変わった。

この日はVeggie Burger（ベジタブルバーガー）とスモークサーモンのサンドイッチを注文。料理はアンティーク風（本物？）のお皿や木のプレートに盛られていて可愛い。サンドイッチは悪くなかったけれど、クリームチーズ＋スライスチーズまで挟まれていて、ちょっとチーズが多すぎてお腹にもたれる。でも、手作り風のフライドポテトはカラッと揚がっていて美味しかった。ベジタブルバーガーは、ちょっと柔らかすぎてもう少し、お肉っぽい歯ごたえが欲しい感じ。

チケット売り場の側にあるBenugo Bar & Kitchenも、Benugoの系列で、こちらはもう少し高級感あり。映画の前後にカジュアルに食事やドリンクを楽しみたいなら、Riverfront Caféの方へ。

The Riverfront Café is on the ground floor on the river side at BFI Southbank. It was renovated and reopened in March, 2009: the café before the renovation had long wooden tables outside and perfect hangout on a nice sunny day, but inside was a mess and grim, and I never dared to sit down. Now it is under a premier sandwich chain Benugo management, like Serpentine Bar & Kitchen in the Hyde Park, and reborn as a modern and comfortable space.

That day, we ordered a veggie burger and a smoke salmon sandwich. The sandwich was not bad, but came with both cream and sliced cheese – it was too much cheese. Handmade fries on a side was good, though. The veggie burger was too mushy and it was not really a ‘burger’. The food was served on antique style (real antique?) dishes and a wooden board, and it was really nice.

Benugo Bar & Kitchen at the entrance near the ticket counter, is also Benugo-operated, and it looks a bit more upscale than its sister café. If you want to enjoy casual & fast eating and drinking, go for the Riverfront Café.

Serpentine Bar & Kitchen @ Hyde Park

バンク・ホリデー（イギリスの祝日をこう呼ぶ）の今日は、ロンドンには珍しく快晴。最高気温も26度位まで上がったので（それまでの気温は最高気温20度前後）、ハイドパークでリラックス。でも同じことを考える人が多く、家族連れ、グループ、カップルとすごい人出だった。ロンドンは晴れの日が少ないので、珍しく晴れた日は、人々は暗い室内から這い出てきて、束の間の太陽を満喫する。公園も、日本なら日陰を選ぶ人が多いけど、こちらの人たちは日向に陣取ってひなたぼっこ。上半身裸、ビキニや水着で日焼けを試みる若者も良く見かける。オープンエアのカフェや外にテーブル席があるレストラン、パブも、大にぎわい。今日ランチしたSerpentine Bar & Kitchenも、注文に長い列ができる程混んでいた。もちろん外のテーブルはほぼ満席、中はガラガラ。日焼けしたいMも外に座りたがったが、暑すぎるので、私が無理矢理中に連れこんだ。

Serpentine Bar & Kitchenは、材料にこだわる手作りサンドイッチ・チェーンのBenugoが展開するカフェ・レストラン。ハイドパークのサーペンタイン・レイク脇にある。1998年創業のBenugoは、現在、ロンドンに6軒のサンドイッチ店を持つ他、V&A（ヴィクトリア＆アルバート美術館）やNatural History Museum（ロンドン自然史博物館）等の文化施設にもテナントとして入っている。また最近はこのSerpentine Bar & Kitchenの他、BFI Southbank内にあるBenugo Bar & Kitchen等、レストランもオープンし、人気を得ている。Serpentine Bar & Kitchenは、カウンターでドリンクや食べ物を注文・先払いする仕組みで、注文の際に自分のテーブル番号を伝えておくと、テーブルまで運んでくれる。ケーキやマフィン類、サンドイッチ等は、別のカウンターで売っている。私たちは、ほうれん草とアンチョビのピザとバナナとナッツのパウンドケーキのスライスを注文。薪を使って石窯で焼いたピザは、なかなか美味しかった。しっとり焼き上がったバナナのケーキ、フェアトレードのコーヒー豆を使ったこだわりのあるコーヒー、珍しいElderflower（ニワトコの花）＆Lemonの紅茶にも満足。でも今度は、あまり混んでない平日にしよう。

Today’s Bank Holiday was sunny with a beautiful blue sky, which is a rarity in London. The highest temperature went up at around 26º, so we went to Hyde Park to relax. It was packed of people, who thought the same thing like us. Since a sunny day is rare in London, whenever it is sunny, even though it lasts only short time, people crawl out of their dark rooms and enjoy sunshine. Any park is full of people sun bathing, some are topless and others are in their bikinis or speedos. Cafes, restaurants, and pubs with outside tables are the battleground for people who are determined to sit outside. Serpentine Bar & Kitchen, where we had lunch today, was not an exception, and there was a long line to order. Of course outside tables were almost full, but inside was half empty. M who loves to get tanned, wanted to sit outside, but I dragged him inside as it was too hot for me.

Serpentine Bar & Kitchen is a cafe/restaurant opened by quality handmade sandwich chain Benugo, on the side of Serpentine in Hyde Park. Benugo, founded in 1998, is located in London’s cultural institutions such as V&A and Natural History Museum, as well as their 6 high street shops. Recently Benugo opened few popular restaurants including Serpentine Bar & Kitchen and Benugo Bar & Kitchen at BFI Southbank. At Serpentine Bar & Kitchen, you order and pay at the counter. You bring back your drink but the food will be brought to your table by giving your table number on the order (so don’t forget to remember your table number). Bakery items such as muffins, cakes, and sandwiches are sold at another counter. We ordered pizza with spinach and anchovy, banana and nuts slice cake today. The pizza baked in the stone oven with wood fire was crunchy and pretty good. We were also enjoyed their espresso made of fair trade coffee beans and fresh elderflower & lemon tea, as well as most and decent banana cake. We will come back definitely – but on a weekday next time.

2009 Serpentine Gallery Pavillion by SANAA

2000年から始まったThe Serpentine Galleryの2009年夏季限定パビリオンが7月12日から始まった。モダンアート／現代美術の展示を行うハイドパークの小さな美術館、サーペンタイン・ギャラリーに隣接した場所に設置されたこのパビリオンは、毎年、ザハ・ハディッド、ダニエル・リベスキンド、伊東豊雄、オスカー・ニーマイヤー、レム・コールハース、フランク・ゲーリー等、世界に名だたる建築家にデザインを依頼。夏の間の３ヶ月のみ設置され、期間が過ぎると撤収されるという、何とももったいない企画だ。期間中、カフェを併設し公園やギャラリーを訪れる人々の憩いの場となる他、特別プログラムやトーク、BBC proms（毎夏開催されるクラシック音楽コンサートシリーズ）等の会場としても使われる。

今年は、日本のSANAA（建築家の妹島和世・西沢立衛による建築ユニット）がデザインした。SANAAいわく、このパビリオンのコンセプトは「floating aluminium, drifting freely between the trees like smoke.（煙のように木々の間を自由に漂う、空に浮かぶアルミニウム）」。ピカピカした表面が鏡のように、下にいる人やオブジェクトを反射させる。上空から見ると公園内にある池に見えるが、地上からはパビリオンの全容がよく見えないので、インパクトが薄い。アルミニウムやプレキシグラス（アクリル樹脂）という人工素材が、緑多いハイドパークに溶け込んでいないかな、と思った。

The annual Serpentine Gallery pavilion opened on July 12 this year. The Serpentine Gallery is an small modern/contemporary art gallery in Hyde Park. Since 2000 each summer, the gallery has commissioned a temporary pavilion on its lawn by world leading architects including Zaha Hadid, Daniel Libeskind, Toyo Ito, Oscar Niemeyer, Rem Koolhaas, and Frank Gehry. The pavilion stays on 3 months in the summer – what a waste of talent! During the period, the pavilion hosts a special programme of film screenings, talks, the BBC proms and café.

Japanese architect unit SANAA (Kazuyo Sejima+Ryue Nishizawa) designed this year’s pavilion. The concept of design is “floating aluminium, drifting freely between the trees like smoke”. Shiny surface reflects people or objects underneath. It looks a water pond from above, but I couldn’t see a concept and whole view on the ground, unless you fly. Also the materials like aluminium and Plexiglas don’t really fit in with the green Hyde park.
