The White Ribbon (Das Weisse Band) by Michael Haneke @ Barbican Cinema

オーストリア出身のミヒャエル・ハネケ監督の新作で、2009年度の第62回カンヌ国際映画祭でパルムドール（最高賞）を受賞した作品、「The White Ribbon / Das weiße Band」（ホワイトリボン）を、バービカンシネマで見た。

物語は1913〜14年、第一次世界大戦直前のドイツ北部の厳格なプロテスタントの村が舞台。主な登場人物は、語り手である独身男性教師、大地主の男爵、子だくさんの牧師、男やもめの医師と彼に尽くす独身看護婦、そしてその子供たち。医師が、家の入口にある2本の木に張られた細いワイヤーにつまずいて落馬、大怪我するところから映画は始まる。その後、道徳や倫理感、規則に縛られた堅苦しいこの小さな村に、不可思議な、処刑や拷問の儀式を思わせる、不穏で悲惨な事故が次々に襲うが、犯人は分からず、住民は不安に陥る。そのうちに第一次世界大戦が開戦し、事件は迷宮入り、戦時中の興奮の中、忘れ去られていく。

タイトルの「ホワイトリボン」は、牧師が、常にPURITY（清廉、純粋）の義務を思い出させる手だてとして、規則を破った子供たちの腕に白いリボンを巻くことからきている。でも、この純粋なはずの子供たちが極めて怪しい。そして、この子供たちが、近い将来に勃興するナチズムとファシズムの時代に成長し、大人になるのだ。そして、その時代に何が起こるか、この子供たちのような人間が何をするか象徴している。

抑えた残虐性。実際の暴力のシーンはない。でも白黒画像が、背筋がぞっとする見えない怖さを増長する。ハネケ作品らしく、最後までその謎は明かされず、観ている人が何が起こったか推測するしかない（それでフラストレーションがたまる）。2時間半と長い映画だけれど、決して退屈しない。パルムドールにふさわしい、見がいのある作品だった。

We saw “The White Ribbon / Das weiße Band”, winner of the Palme d’Or at 2009 Cannes Film Festival, by Austrian director Michael Haneke, at Barbican Cinema.

The story takes place in a small Protestant village in northern Germany in 1913-14, just before the World War I breaks out. Among the people who live there are a baron who own large estate, a strict pastor with many children, a widowed doctor, a midwife, and their children, and a unmarried schoolteacher who tells this story many years later. Since the first incident happened, the doctor falls down from his horse and is severely wounded by wire placed at the entrance of his house, a string of disturbing and distressing accidents occur and gradually take on the character of a ritual of punishment and torture. No one knows who is the perpetrator, and villagers in this highly moralistic and stiff community worry and feel uncertain. Then the World War I started and the mysteries remain unsolved and forgotten in the excitement of the war.

The title “white ribbon” comes from the episode that the pastor tie a white ribbon to the arm of his two children as a constant reminder of their duties to purity. But these kids, who should be ‘pure’, are the possible offenders of this horrific incidents and act very suspicious. And these children are the ones who grow up in the rise of Nazism and Fascism; this infers future brutality and what former children are capable of during the time of Nazis.

Suppressed cruelty – there are no scenes of actual violence. But the black & white footage enhances unseen chilling horror. As in his other his films, Haneke never reveals who did these crimes, so the viewers have to guess ourselves (and it is a bit frustrating). It is a long movie, about 2 hours and half, but it didn’t bore me at all – one of the best work of Haneke for me and it deserves to Palme d’Or.

A Serious Man by Coen Brothers @ Barbican Cinema

バービカンセンターにある映画館で、コーエン兄弟の最新作「A Serious Man」（シリアス・マン：原題）を観た。旧約聖書のヨブの物語を元にした今回の作品では、ジョージ・クルーニーやブラッド・ピット等、ハリウッドスターが盛りだくさんだった前作の「バーン・アフター・リーディング（Burn After Reading）」と違い、国際的には知られていない俳優たちを起用。1967年のユダヤ人コミュニティを背景に、普通の生活を送っていた普通の男の人生の歯車が少しずつ狂っていく様を描いている。

真面目で面白みのない男、Larry Gopnik（ラリー・ゴプニック）は、ミネソタ州に住む、大学の物理学の教授。妻・Judith（ジュディス）からは、ラリーの知り合いのSy Ableman（サイ・エイブルマン）と恋に落ち、離婚したいと言われる。家には、ラリーの無職の兄・アーサーが居候。ユダヤ人学校に通う息子のDanny（ダニー）はマリファナを吸ったり授業を真面目に聴かない等、素行不良で、娘のSarah（サラ）は身だしなみにしか興味がなく、鼻の整形手術のために父の財布からお金を抜き取って貯金中。ジュディスはサイと新しい家族を築きたいと、ラリーとアーサーを追い出し、二人は安モーテルに寝泊まりするはめに。職場では、ラリーの大学での終身在職権の審査を前に中傷の手紙が届き、単位を落としそうな韓国人学生からは賄賂を押し付けられ、あげくに名誉毀損で訴えると脅される。その後も不合理な出来事がラリーを次々襲い、神経衰弱寸前に追いつめられた彼は、３人のユダヤ教のラビ（宗教指導者）に相談するが、助けにならない。そして最後まで彼の苦悩は続く（詳しいストーリーはここでどうぞ）。

スター不在の、この低予算で作られた映画は、ユダヤ人であるコーエン兄弟の育った環境を再現した、彼らにとって最もパーソナルな作品。コーエン兄弟の本領が発揮された久々の秀作と、映画批評家からも高い評価を得ている。コーエン兄弟らしい、意味不明のシーン（例えば映画の始めに語られる幽霊のストーリー、詳しくはここで。ラリーの祖先か？）、救いのないエンディングはちょっとやり過ぎかなと思うけれど、これでもかという悲惨な状況にも関わらず、独特のブラック・ユーモアが冴えており、かなり笑えた（ユダヤ人やユダヤ教についての下りはよく知らない部分も多かったけれど）。

バービカン・シネマは、家から近いし、そんなに混まないし、座席も座り心地が良くて結構お気に入りの映画館。月曜日は映画代が£5.50、その他の日でも、ウェブでチケットを購入すると、£2割引の£7.50。映画のセレクションも良いし、なかなか使えます。

We saw a new movie of Joel and Ethan Coen,”A Serious Man” at the Barbican Cinema. Loosely based on the Jewish biblical story of Job, A Serious Man is the story of an ordinary man whose life goes up side down with all kinds of tragedies.

It is 1967 in Minessota, and Larry Gopnik, a Jewish physics professor, has just been informed by his wife Judith that she is leaving him. She has fallen in love with one of his more pompous acquaintances, Sy Ableman, and kicks out Larry and his unemployable brother Arthur, who is living with them, to a cheap motel. Larry’s son Danny has a discipline problem and is a shirker at Hebrew school, and his daughter Sarah is filching money from his wallet in order to save up for a nose job. At Larry’s workplace, an anonymous hostile letter-writer is trying to sabotage Larry’s chances for tenure at the university, and a graduate student is trying to bribe him for a passing grade while at the same time threatening to sue him for defamation. Being pushed to the edge of nervous breakdown, Larry seeks advice from three different rabbis, but no help is available, and his suffering continues…(detailed story is here)

A Serious Man is a low-budget film featured lesser known actors and actress, in compare to their previous star-studded film Burn After Reading with George Clooney and Brad Pitt, and a pretty personal work for Coen brothers: in this movie, they recreates the environment they grew up with – suburban rambler homes in St. Louis Park, Minnesota and a Jewish community in the mid-1960s. The film is considered as one of Coens’ best works by the movie critiques and earns highly positive critical response. Absurd scenes (such as the story of ‘ghost’ at the beginning – are they the ancestors of Larry??), which are typical in Coen brothers’ films, and ending with no hope may be too much for me, but their black humors are pretty brilliant, though I didn’t understand much about Jewish and Judaism parts.

Barbican Cinema is close to us and is not crowded, and is one of our favorite movie theater. The ticket costs £5.50 on Monday, and you can get £2 discount if you buy online for £7.50 (normally £9.50).  Their selection of films is good as well, and we tend to choose Barbican when we go to see a movie.

Handel Remixed / David Daniels @ Barbican Hall

9月19日、バービカン・ホールで催されたコンサート、「Handel Remixed / David Daniels」に行ってきた。クラシック音楽に関しては中学・高校の音楽のクラスの知識並みだけれど、クラシックの中ではバロック音楽が好きなこと、このコンサートの主役のデービッド・ダニエルズがMの好きなオペラ「Theodra」に出ていたこと、現代音楽を交えたちょっと趣向の変わったコンサートだということ、またバービカンは近所だし、ということでチケットを購入した。

このコンサートはヘンデルの没後250周年を記念し、マイケル・ナイマン、ニコ・マーリー、ジョン・タヴナー、ジョスリン・プーク、クレイグ・アームストロングの5人の現代音楽作曲家に、ヘンデルの音楽を元に作曲を依頼。ヘンデルのアリアやオラトリオの間にこれらの曲を挟む形のコンサートなので、「ヘンデル・リミックス」。Academy of St Martin in the Fields（アカデミー室内管弦楽団）が演奏、デービッド・ダニエルズがソロイストとして舞台に立った。ヘンデルの音楽はもとより、カウンターテナーのダニエルズの声は繊細で透き通っていて、聞いていてとても気持ちがいい。5人の作曲家の曲はヘンデルというよりも映画音楽のようだったりして、正統派の音楽ファンやお偉い批評家の方はあまりお気に召さなかったようだけれど、クラシック初心者の私は充分楽しませていただいた。特に、アンコールのオンブラ・マイ・フは、心に沁み入る素敵な演奏だった。

We went to a concert “Handel Remixed / David Daniels” at Barbican Hall on September 19. My knowledge in classical music is at high school music class level, but we decided to go to this concert because 1) we like baroque among other classical music, 2) it was the concert of the singer David Daniels who performed in the opera ‘Theodra‘ that M likes, 3) this was a unique concert that classical music met contemporary music, and 4) Barbican is only 10 minutes away by bicycle.

The concert was planned to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Handel‘s death by commissioning five composers, Michael Nyman, Nico Muhly, John Tavener, Craig Armstrong and Jocelyn Pook, to write works based upon Handel’s music. These new songs were played in between Handel’s original arias and oratorios, therefore, it was called ‘Handel Remixed’. Countertenor David Daniels and Academy of St Martin in the Fields performed in the concert.Daniels’ sensitive and pure voice was beautiful, and was very relaxing as well. Some songs by the five composers sounded more like movie soundtracks than Handel, and some hardcore Handel fans and the Telegraph and the Guardian critique didn’t seem to be impressed by the concert, but the concert was fantastic for us as a classic music novice and we like the concept of classic music with modern touch. Especially “ombra mai fu” (original version) for the encore was so beautiful and moving.

Dose Espresso Café @ Barbican/Smithfield

地下鉄Barbican駅からLong LaneをSmithfield Marketの方向に向かって数分のところにあるカフェ、Dose Espresso。Sacred CafeやNude Espressoと同様、またまたニュージーランド人経営の、客が２組も入ればいっぱいになる小さなカフェだけれど、シドニーとロンドンで7年以上経験を積んだバリスタであるオーナーの、コーヒーや食べ物に関するこだわりは強い。愛用のLa Marzocco FB-80は、フィレンツェで手作りされたエスプレッソ・マシーンの最高級品。コーヒーは、品質に定評のあるSquare Mile Coffee Roastersから、生産者の待遇や栽培方法に極力配慮したコーヒー豆を仕入れている。サンドイッチやサラダ、ポリッジ等は手作り。オーガニックの材料を使って石釜で焼かれたパンはBorn and Bread Bakeryから、キッシュ、スープ、スウィーツはTime Out誌での評価も高いBea’s of Bloomsburyから仕入れている。今回Mはモッツァレラとトマトのサンドイッチを、私はバナナのパウンドケーキを頼んだ（photo）。残念ながらサンドイッチはMのお気に召さなかったらしいが、温めてバターを少しのせたパウンドケーキは、ダウンアンダー系のカフェにつきもののFlat Whiteの苦みと良く合って、とてもおいしかった。Mのデザートのマッチ箱サイズの小型フィナンシェも絶品、ちょっと甘いものを食べたい時にぴったり（photo）。ただ木の椅子とプラスティック製のスツールは、座り心地が良くないのが残念。まあ、小さい店なので、長居せず、次の客に席を譲れということなのだろう。可愛いメニューボードも必見。

Dose Espresso is small on Long Lane, few minutes walk from Barbican tube station toward Smithfield Market. Like Sacred Cafe and Nude Espresso, another Kiwi-owned tiny café with few seats, but the owner’s passion for coffee and food deserves to be acknowledged. The owner is an experienced barista who had worked over 7 years in Sydney and London, and his La Marzocco FB-80 is the top quality espresso machine handmade in Florence. Their coffee is ethically sourced, carefully roasted and delivered in reusable buckets from Square Mile Coffee Roasters, which specialise in finding the best coffee beans from around the world. Sandwiches, salads and porridges are homemade. Their organic bread are baked in wood fired oven and comes from artisan bakery Born and Bread. The quiches, soups and sweets are delivered from Bea’s of Bloomsbury, highly rated café/bakery by Time Out. M ordered Mozzrella and tomato sandwich, and I ordered Banana cake and Flat White, which is a must at “down under” café (photo).  The sandwich unfortunately wasn’t nominated in M’s list of the best sandwich in town (M said it was blunt – maybe it was almost the end of the day?), but my banana cake, warmed and topped with some butter, was excellent and perfect with bitter Flat White. M’s desert, matchbox size friands was delicious as well, and perfect to satisfy your sugar craze while you are on diet (photo). I don’t call their wooden chairs and plastic stools are the most comfortable seats, but I guess that we have to give up the seat for a next guest as soon as we finish our food or coffee, due to their limited space. Must see their cute menu board, before you leave.

Vicky Christina Barcelona @ Barbican Centre

バービカン・センター（バービカン）で、ウディ・アレン監督の新作「それでも恋するバルセロナ（Vicky Christina Barcelona）」を見た（なんて恥ずかしいタイトル。。。）。今週末は、ロンドンのフリーペーパー・The Londonpaperとのタイアップで、映画代が£5.00（通常£7.50）に。今日はバレンタインデーだったので、映画館は結構混んでいた。バービカンは、コンサートホール、３つの映画館、２つの劇場、２つのアートギャラリー、図書館、バー・レストランが入る、ヨーロッパ最大の文化施設。家から歩いて２０分ほどなので、よくお世話になっている（特に映画）。金融街シティの北側にあるバービカン（ラテン語で砦の意味）は、1950～70年代にかけて流行した「ブルータリズム」という、コンクリートを多用した近代建築群としても知られる。

「Vicky Christina Barcelona」（日本語題名が気に食わないので英語名で呼びます）は、ニューヨークからヨーロッパに映画撮影の場を移したウディ・アレンが、久々に本領を発揮したロマンティック・コメディで、第66回ゴールデングローブ賞作品賞 (ミュージカル・コメディ部門)を受賞した作品。夏のバルセロナを舞台に、ハビエル・バルデム演ずる、ラテン系女たらしの画家と、違った個性を持つ３人の魅力的な女性（自由奔放でキュートなスカーレット・ヨハンソン、現実的なレベッカ・ホール、情熱的なペネロペ・クルス）との関係を、持ち前のユーモアを交えてうまく描いている。ロンドンで製作した３作は、今イチ評判が良くなかったけれど、ウディ・アレンは、人間関係を描かせたら、本当に一流だ。私はニューヨークに６年住んでいたので、ニューヨークが舞台のアレンの映画にはとても親近感を感じる。ニューヨークが舞台の次作にも期待したい。

We saw a Woody Allen’s new movie ‘Vicky Christina Barcelona’ at the Barbican Centre (Barbican). We could get the tickets for £5.00@ (normally £7.50) , with The Londonpaper promotional offer. Today is a Valentine’s day and cinema was pretty busy. Barbican Centre is the largest performing arts centre in Europe, containing 1 concert hall, 3 cinemas, 2 theaters, 2 art galleries, library, and bars and restaurants. We go there often, especially to see a movie, as it is only 20 min walks to get there. Barbican, located on the north of the  financial district the City, is also know for its Brutalist architecture using a lot of concrete, which was popular in 50’s to 70’s.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona, a fourth movie of Woody Allen shot in Europe, is 2008 Golden Globe Award-winning/Academy Award-nominated film. The movie wittily portrays the complicated relationship among one man and three different type of women – a Latin-lover artist (Javier Bardem), his passionate yet unstable ex-wife (Penélope Cruz), and two young American women spending a summer in Barcelona, free spirited Christina (Scarlett Johansson) and down-to-earth Vicky (Rebecca Hall). Previous three movies filmed in London were not well reputed, but this movie was really the result of Allen’s excellent observation in relationships. We used to live in New York, so I feel a lot of sympathy to his movies shot in New York. I can’t wait to see Allen’s upcoming movie this year, ‘Whatever Works‘ with ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm‘ star Larry David, which was shot again in New York.
