Castles in Kent: Scotney Castle

ボディアム城から車で北東に20分ほど行ったところにあるScotney Castle（スコットニー城）。他のお城ほど知られていないけれど、思っていた以上に素晴らしく、人気投票でイングランドの庭園ベスト10に選ばれたそうだ。

スコットニー城は新旧2つの建物で構成される。入口を入るとまず目に入るのが、「Scotney New Castle」で知られる、「Elizabethan style」と呼ばれる初期ルネッサンス建築様式のビクトリア朝カントリー・ハウス（上写真2枚）で、Anthony Salvin（アンソニー・サルビン）が設計、1837年に庭園を臨む丘の上に建てられた。Hussey（ハッシー）夫妻が住んでいたこのお屋敷は、1970年の夫であるChristopherの死に伴い、庭園と周囲の敷地がNational Trust（ナショナル・トラスト）に譲り渡され、2006年の妻・Bettyの死の翌年、初めて一般公開された。お屋敷は上品なアンティークの家具や置物のほか、近年の猫の雑誌が置いてあったり、浴室が猫や犬の描かれたアートやオブジェが飾られていたりと、猫好き・動物好きであったと思われる奥様がつい最近まで住んでいた痕跡が、そこかしこに見える。

New Castleのある丘と庭園を降りていくと、小さな湖に浮かぶ小島に建つ、お濠に囲まれた中世14世紀のお城の廃墟「Scotney Old Castle」がある。周囲の、なだらかに上昇していくピクチャレスク・スタイルの庭園では、冬は雪景色、春・夏はシャクナゲやツツジ、カルミアをはじめとする色とりどりの花々、秋には紅葉と、四季を通じて様々な自然の美を愛でることが出来る。Old Castleは、訪れる人々の目にドラマティックな視覚効果を与えるため、敢えて廃墟として残しているのだそうだ。

お城は1年中門戸が開かれていて、緑地、森、農地を含む315ヘクタールもの広大な敷地には様々な散策ルートが用意されている。その他、恐竜の足跡の残された地層が見えるQuarry Garden（クワリー/採石場）や、氷室、船小屋、そして17世紀に司祭が匿われていたOld Castleに残る「Priest’s hole（司祭の穴）」なども見ることが出来る。

After the Bodiam Castle, we visited the Scotney Castle by driving 20 minutes up to north west. It is not as known as other castles but it is a true gem and better than we expected. We found out on a brochure that its gardens were voted among the top ten best English gardens.

The castle consists of two houses. When you enter the gate, first you see the Victorian country house in an Elizabethan style, known as Scotney New Castle (two photos above) designed by Anthony Salvin and built in 1837, at the top of the hill and garden. The house was the home of Christopher and Betty Hussey. The garden and surrounding estate was left to the National Trust on Christopher’s death in 1970, and following the death of Betty in 2006, the house was opened to the public for the first time in 2007. You can see many traces of the recent and the last resident who was presumably cat & animal lover such as cat magazines and her bathroom decorated with cats & dogs objects and paintings, amongst classic interior and antiques.

Walking down the valley, there is the Scotney Old Castle at the bottom on an island on a small lake. This 14th-century medieval moated ruined castle is surrounded by sloping, wooded gardens in the Picturesque style, featuring displays of natural beauty all year round, from snowdrops to a wide range of colourful flowers including rhododendrons, azaleas and kalmia and autumnal colour. The Old Castle was selectively ruined to create a dramatic focal point for this magnificent garden.

The estate is open all year, offering a variety of walks through 315-hectare (780-acre) estate with parkland, woodland and farmland. There are also Quarry Garden where a fossilised impression of a dinosaur’s footprint can be seen, as well as the ice-house, boathouse, and the Priest’s hole where Jesuit Father Blount was hidden in the early 17th century, which can still be seen in the Old Castle.

The Bathhouse Café/Restaurant/Bar @ Bishopsgate Churchyard

昨日、NOWに行った後、食後のお茶（Mはエスプレッソ）をするカフェを探していて偶然見つけた「The Bathhouse」。「バスハウス」という名前から推測できるように、Bathhouseは、ビクトリア朝時代の1894〜95年に建てられたトルコ式浴場（詳細はここから）を、カフェ／レストラン／バーに改装したもの。どうりで、装飾やディテールがエキゾチックだと思った。1階のカフェは、アンティークの家具で飾られ、昔懐かしいレコードプレーヤーから古い音楽が流れている。極小の店ながら、居心地がいい。入った事はないけれど、レストランはもっと豪奢で異国情緒溢れる感じ（写真はウェブギャラリーのThe Bathhouseをクリック）。メニューを見ると、ブリティッシュ／ヨーロピアン料理を出すお店みたい。

隣は、オフィスビルに囲まれた、英国国教会に属する小さな教会、St Botolph-without-Bishopsgate。敷地内の芝生の上やベンチには、仕事の合間に一息する人たちや日向ぼっこする若者たち。スーツ姿のビジネスマンたちが行き交う、喧噪溢れるビジネス街・シティの小さなオアシスだ。こんな場所がシティにあるなんて知らなかった。

After we ate at NOW yesterday, we happened to find the Bathhouse while we were looking for a café. The Bathhouse is a café/restaurant/bar, sitting in an old Victorian Turkish Bathhouse built in 1894-95, as its name suggests (more details are here) – that’s why its exterior and details are sort of exotic. Ultra small but comfy café space on the ground floor is filled with antique furniture and nostalgic songs are coming out of an good old record player. I haven’t seen actually but the restaurant, offering British/European dishes, looks magnificent with impressive oriental decor (click “The Bathhouse” on their web gallery for photos).

Next to the Bathhouse is an small Anglican church, St Botolph-without-Bishopsgate. Surrounded by office buildings, people were taking a break or sunbathing in the surprisingly quite church courtyard – it is a small oasis in the busy and bustling City.

Highbury Fields @ Islington

雨が多かったイースターの休日（今年は4月2日〜5日）が終わり、今日は、暖かくてお天気のいい、とても春らしい日だったので、久しぶりに、Le Péché Mignonでランチした。このカフェの中庭のテーブルがお気に入りで、天気のいい日の定番のランチ場所になのだけれど、冬の間は寒いので、もう何ヶ月も来ていなかった。そして、Le Péché Mignonに来た時は、いつもこのHighbury Fields（ハイブリー・フィールズ）を散歩してから帰る。

Rainy Easter holidays (April 2 to 5 this year) was over, and it is a warm and sunny spring day today – finally. So we had lunch at Le Péché Mignon, our regular lunch place for sunny days at their cozy courtyard, after long cold winter months. Every time we go to Le Péché Mignon, we take a walk in Highbury Fields after lunch.

ハイブリー・フィールズは、Highbury & Islington（ハイブリー&イズリントン）駅の北にある、ビクトリア朝やジョージアン様式のタウンハウスに囲まれた閑静な公園で、イズリントン区最大のオープンスペース。テニスコートやサッカー場、子供の遊び場、そしてHighbury Pool and Fitness Centreという、公営のスポーツセンターを備える。

Surrounded by elegant Georgian and Victorian town houses, Highbury Fields is located north of the  Highbury & Islington station and is the largest open space in the borough of Islington, with tennis courts, football pitch and a children’s play area as well as recently refurbished Highbury Pool and Fitness Centre.

近くにある、アーセナルのホーム・Arsenal Stadiumで試合がある日は、試合が終わった後は、赤白のアーセナルのチームカラーに身を包んだファンが、公園を通ってぞろぞろ帰ってきて、「ウォーリーをさがせ！」状態になる。

When Arsenal F.C. has a home game at Arsenal Stadium nearby, Highbury Fields looks like a page of “Where’s Wally?” after the game, with tons of fans coming back through the park in Arsenal’s team color red x white shirts and bar scarves.

公園の横にある、アイスクリーム屋さん。天気の良い日は、長い行列ができる。こちらでよく見かけるこのような移動式アイスクリーム屋さん、ソフトクリームにチョコレートスティックをのせたものや、市販のアイスクリーム・バーを売っている。何故かイタリアの国旗を掲げたりイタリア風の名前をつけているけれど、イタリアのジェラートとは似ても似つかない。

An ice cream van on the side of the park. There is always a long line/queue in sunny afternoons. This kind of ice cream vans are quite popular in UK, and sells soft ice cream with chocolate stick on the top and manufactured ice cream bars. Though they colored their vans in red, white and green like Italian national flag, and put Italian names, but their ice creams are not Italian at all – just in case you expect Italian gelato from them.

公園の南側にある、戦死傷したイズリントン住民を記念し、1906年に建てられた、アールヌーボー風のボーア戦争碑。

An art nouveau style war memorial dating from 1906 at the south end of the fields, that commemorates Islington residents who fell in the Boer War.
