Carnaby Street 50th Anniversary

2010年は、カーナビー・ストリート（Carnaby Street）の50周年記念の年。60年代に、モッズやヒッピー・ファッションの中心地であったカーナビー・ストリートに、独立系のブティックやデザイナーたちが店を構え、また周辺の通りには、様々なアングラのミュージック・バーがあった。Wardour Streetの角にあった伝説的なクラブ・Marquee Clubでは、ビートルズやザ・フー、ローリング・ストーンズなどが演奏し、彼らがたむろしたカーナビー・ストリートは、スウィンギング・ロンドンで、もっともクールな場所になった。

今もカーナビー・ストリートは、ロンドンの代表的なショッピング・ストリートの一つで、いつも観光客や若者で賑わっている。メイン・ストリートであるカーナービー・ストリートや周辺の小さな通り、Kingly court（キングリー・コート）、Newburgh Quarter（ニューバーグ・クォーター）など一帯には、ファッションや靴などのショップなどのほか、カフェやバー、パブ、レストランが並ぶ。

50周年を記念し、2010年は1年を通して、ファッションやデザイン、音楽に関連したイベントやフェスティバルが行われる予定。写真は、2月から開催されている展覧会で、カーナビー・ストリートの16世紀から現在までの歴史、特に60年代を中心に解説している。空き店舗を利用したと思われるこの展覧会は、ちょっと薄暗〜い感じで展示品のサイズも小さく、スペースを有効利用できてない感じ。写真もファッションも、もっとたくさん展示してほしかった。でも奥の左にあるブースでやっている、カーナビー・ストリートの歴史のビデオはなかなか面白い。

Year 2010 is Carnaby Street‘s 50th Anniversary. By the 1960s, Carnaby Street became an iconic fashion destination for he Mod and hippie styles. Many independent fashion boutiques and designers were located as well as various underground music bars in the surrounding streets. With bands such as The Beatles, The Who, and Rolling Stones appeared in the area to work with the legendary Marquee Club located round the corner in Wardour Street, and shopped and socialized, it became one of Swinging London‘s coolest destination.

Today Carnaby Street is still one of the main shopping street in London and attracts many young people and tourists. The area including main Carnaby Street and surrounding streets as well as Kingly court and the Newburgh Quarter, offers fashion stores and boutiques as well as cafés, bars, pubs and restaurants.

Throughout 2010, Carnaby streets will host various events and festivals featuring fashion, design and music. Kicking off in February with an exhibition which includes a detailed history of the area, from the 16th Century to the present day, especially focusing on the sixties. This exhibition, using an empty store space, is a bit dark and the materials exhibited are rather too small. There is a big unused space in the middle and I wish they can show us more its iconic fashions and photos. However, I quite enjoyed the video being played on the back, showing the history of the street, especially during the hype in 60’s.

今日３月１３日はComic Relief（コミック・リリーフ）主催のRed Nose Day（レッド・ノーズ・デー／赤鼻の日）。BBCでは、夜７時から深夜３時まで、特別番組が放映されている。コミック・リリーフは、エチオピアの飢饉をきっかけに、コメディ・ライターのRichard Curtis（リチャード・カーティス）1985年に設立。世界の貧困撲滅を目指すレッド・ノーズ・デーは、コミック・リリーフの主な寄付金集めのイベントで、隔年春に開催される。今年は「Do Something Funny for Money（募金のために、何か面白い事をしよう）」のスローガンのもとに、BBCの特別番組で寄付を募るほか、協賛会社（Sainsbury’s、TK Maxx等）によるグッズ販売、学校やオフィスでの募金集め、チャリティ・イベント開催等、イギリスではお祭り騒ぎの大イベントだ。デービッド・ベッカムを含むイングランド・サッカーチーム、ロビー・ウィリアムズ、オアシス、シエナ・ミラー等、イギリスを代表する歌手や俳優等、多くのセレブが、番組出演やグッズの宣伝などいろんな形で協力している。レッド・ノーズ・デーという名の通り、プラスチックやスポンジ状の赤鼻をつけるのが習わしだ（さすがに赤鼻をつけて歩いてる人は見かけませんが）。

今年のグッズの目玉は、ファッションデザイナーで、ビートルズのポール・マッカートニーの娘、ステラ・マッカートニーがデザインしたチャリティ・Tシャツ。キーラ・ナイトレイのCMをあちこちで見かける。Tシャツのデザインは４種類。ビートルズ（ポールの前妻、故リンダ・マッカートニー撮影）、マドンナ（ハーブ・リッツ撮影）、イギリスのコメディアン・Morecambe & Wise（David Bailey撮影）、そして可愛いうさぎ（ポールの娘、ステラの姉で写真家の、メアリー・マッカートニー撮影）で、鼻のところに赤い丸が施されている。あのステラが手がけた、ビートルズ等の大スターのデザインTシャツだけあって、 ウェブストアでは、ほとんど売り切れの人気商品だ。子供用のうさぎのTシャツは、ヤフーオークションに現在出品してます。ご興味があれば、→クリックして、見てみて下さい。

Today, March 13th Friday (not the best day for charity), is the Red Nose Day organized by Comic Relief.  Comic Relief, with a vision of ‘a just world free from poverty’, is a British charity organisation that was founded in 1985 by the comedy scriptwriter Richard Curtis, in response to famine in Ethiopia. Red Nose Day is the main source of raising money for the charity, and is held  in the spring every two year. With this year’s slogan ‘Do something Funny for Money’, the Red Nose Day hosts special TV program on BBC 1 (from 7pm to 3am) for donation, sale of goods with the help of partner companies (Sainsbury’s, TK Maxx etc), fund-raising at schools and offices across the country, and various charity events, and it is big event in UK. As in the name the ‘Red Nose Day’, traditionally people wear the plastic/foam, though I haven’t seen anyone going around with the ‘red nose’.  Many British celebs like Oasis, Robbie Williams, Sienna Miller, England soccer team including David Beckham help the charity with their appearance in the TV, events and commercials.

The top the list of the Red Nose Day goods this year, is charity T-shirts designed by Stella McCartney, a fashion designer and a daughter of former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney. I saw many ad with Keira Knightely on the poster and ad in the media. Produced by TK Maxx, the T-shirts are available in four design — The Beatles (photographed by the wife of Paul, Linda McCartney), Madonna (by a fashion photographer, Herb Ritts), Morecambe & Wise (by British photographer David Bailey), and cute bunny (by Stella’s sister, Mary McCartney), with a red circle on their noses. On the web shop, as you can imagine, most of the T-shirts are already sold out by now.
