IFO (Identified Flying Object) by Jacques Rival @ King’s Cross

オリンピックを前に急ピッチで改装が進むキングス・クロス駅の北に置かれた、ブランコが中に入った9mもの巨大な鳥かご「IDENTIFIED FLYING OBJECT (IFO)」（UFOをもじったネーミングか）は、フランス人アーティスト／建築家であるJacques Rival（ジャック・リヴァル）の作品で、キングス・クロスのアート・プログラム「RELAY」の一環。King’s Cross ウェブサイトによると、IFOは急速に変わりゆくキングス・クロスを体現。夜はライトアップされ、クレーンで吊るされる夜もあるそう。また、設置期間の2年間（2011年11月17日〜2013年11月17日）、様々なイベントに使われるという。

“IDENTIFIED FLYING OBJECT (IFO)“, a 9-meter giant birdcage with a two-seater swing chair inside set on the north of King’s Cross train station, is a commission by French architect/architect Jacques Rival and is part of RELAY, the first dedicated art programme at King’s Cross. According to the King’s Cross website, IFO reflects the transience of King’s Cross and the rapid changes it is undergoing. IFO gets illuminated at night and is hang from the cranes on selected nights. It also hosts with a series of pop-up activities throughout two years period from Nov 17, 2011 to Nov 17, 2013.

One New Change @ Cheapside

新しいショッピング・モール「One New Change」がシティのCheapside（チープサイド）にオープンした。オープン初日の4時間で、1万2000人が訪れたという。古英語の「ceapan」が起源の「cheap」は「marketplace（市場）」を意味し、ショッピング・センター建設にうってつけの場所に思えるけれど、セント・ポール大聖堂の隣という場所柄、その建設は論議を巻き起こし、あのチャールズ皇太子も反対したという曰く付き。

2007年に取り壊された元Bank of England（イングランド銀行）跡地に建てられた、8階建て・高さ40mのガラス張りのこのビル、デザインは、今年のSerpentine Gallery（サーペンタイン・ギャラリー）の夏季限定パビリオンを設計した、フランス人建築家のJean Nouvel（ジャン・ヌーヴェル）が担当。その外見から「stealth bomber（ステルス爆撃機）」と言う愛称で呼ばれているそう。地下1階から地上2階に、TopshopやH&M、Banana Republic、Mango、そしてジェイミー・オリヴァーとアメリカ人バーベキュー・シェフ、Adam Perry-Lang共同経営のBBQレストラン「Barbecoa」など約60軒の店舗やレストラン・カフェがテナントとして入り、その上がオフィスのフロアになっている。6階はセント・ポール寺院をはじめ辺りを見渡せる広々とした展望スペースになっている。来年には、展望レストランやゴードン・ラムゼイのレストラン「Bread Street Kitchen」などもオープンする予定。

サーペンタイン・パビリオンの印象的な真っ赤な建物ではなく、外見に少しデザインの要素を含みつつも何の変哲もないショッピング・センターに仕上がっていて、少し期待外れ。でもこの不景気のせいか、モールには人も少なく、ゆっくり買い物するのにはもってこい。ロンドンのどこに行っても見かけるチェーン系のお店やレストランばかりなのが玉にキズだけれど、人混みをかき分けながらオックスフォード・ストリートで買い物しなくても、ある程度のものがここで手に入るので、このモールは私たちにとっては便利な存在だ。

On October 28th, a new shopping mall “One New Change” in Cheapside opened just next to St Paul’s Cathedral. It is said that 12,000 people visited the mall in the first 4 hours of its opening. The word “Cheapside” derives from the Old English “ceapan,” meaning “marketplace”, seems to be the perfect place for the shopping center, but its sensitive location opposite to St Paul’s caused some controversy during its planning and construction, including criticism from Prince Charles himself.

This 8-storey / 40m high glass building was constructed on the former Bank of England site which was demolished in 2007. It was designed by French Architect Jean Nouvel who also designed the 2010 Serpentine Gallery Pavilion. Around 60 shops and restaurants / cafés, such as Topshop, H&M, Banana Republic and Mango, as well as a joint-venture BBQ restaurant “Barbecoa” by Jamie Oliver and American BBQ chef Adam Perry-Lang, occupy the bottom three floors, and the rest is used as office space. There is a spacious roof terrace, overlooking St Paul’s on the 6th floor. Next year, the mall will have a roof terrace café & restaurant, as well as Gordon Ramsay‘s restaurant “Bread Street Kitchen” and few others.

On contrary to the impressive all-red Serpentine Pavilion, “One New Change” ended up in rather cold and ordinary shopping mall, though some bits of design factors included, and it is a little disappointment. Also the mall is full of chains that you can see any high street in London. However, there were not many shoppers, probably due to this recession, and I could comfortably walk around the stores. Overall, the opening of the “One New Change” is good for us, so that we don’t have to necessarily go all the way to Oxford Street to shop, without pushing and bumping other shoppers to reach what we want.

2010 Serpentine Gallery Pavillion by Jean Nouvel

昨日Lidoでランチをした後、7月10日から10月17日まで開催中の、The Serpentine Gallery（サーペンタイン・ギャラリー）の夏季限定パビリオンを、遅ればせながら見に行ってきた。

パビリオンの創設10周年、またサーペンタイン・ギャラリーの開設から40年を迎えた2010年のパビリオンは、フランス人建築家・ジャン・ヌーヴェルがデザイン。遠くからでも目に入る、全てが鮮やかな赤の建物で、周囲の緑とのコントラストがまぶしい。去年の、控えめで落ち着いた感じのSANAAのパビリオンと正反対で、情熱的でパワフルだ。これはフランス人と日本人の国民性の違いか？？

今秋、ヌーヴェルのイギリスにおける最初のメジャーな建築作品となるショッピング・センター「One New Change」が、セント・ポール寺院の近くにオープンするので、このパビリオンはその前の話題作りにちょうどいい。家から最寄りの大規模ショッピング・センターとなるOne New Changeの建設は、私たちにとっても嬉しいニュースで、そのオープンが待ち遠しい。

We went to see the annual Serpentine Gallery pavilion (10 July – 17 October), after having lunch at Lido yesterday.

This year is the Serpentine’s 40th Anniversary, and celebrates the 10th commission of the annual summer pavilion. The 2010 Serpentine Gallery Pavilion is designed by French architect Jean Nouvel. The entire building is rendered in a vivid red, contrasting with the surrounding green. It is passionate and powerful, and you can easily spot it from far. This is complete opposite to the last year’s quiet and modest SANAA’s pavilion. Is this because of cultural difference between French and Japanese??

This autumn, Nouvel’s first major permanent work in UK, One New Change shopping and office complex will open near St Paul’s Cathedral, and this pavilion is a good introduction before the opening. The opening of One New Change is great for us, as this will be our closest large scale shopping center.

ロンドンの電話ボックス、郵便ポスト、バスの赤を反映しているのもあるけれども、ヌーヴェルは、「夏の太陽が目を射し、瞬きをしたら、世界が真っ赤になった」時に、赤をコンセプトにすることを思いついたという（ガーディアン紙のインタビューより）。あんまり赤過ぎて、中にいると目がチカチカするけれど、何だかパワーがみなぎって、高揚した気分になる。

The red color reflects the London’s telephone boxes, post boxes and busses. But more than that, his ‘red’ concept came from “that moment,” Nouvel says, “when the summer sun catches you full in the eyes and, as you blink, the world dissolves into red” (from the Guardian’s interview with Nouvel). It is so red and flickering, but invigorating and energizing at the same time.

大胆な幾何学的フォルム、格納式の天幕、支柱なしで立つ12mの高さの傾斜壁からなる建物。

The building consists of bold geometric forms, large retractable awnings and a sloped freestanding wall that stands 12m above the lawn.

パビリオンの中は、人々がひと休みしたり、お喋りを楽しんだり、チェスに興じたりできるよう（チェス台付きのテーブルもある）、これまた真っ赤のテーブルと椅子が置いてあり、カフェ・カウンターで軽食や飲み物も買える。

The pavilion contains a large seating area, where people can relax, chat, and play chess at all-red tables and chairs. You can buy drinks and snacks at a café counter.

パビリオンの向かいには、これまた赤のフランスの伝統的屋外卓球台が置かれている。

There are traditional French outdoor table-tennis tables outside the pavilion, which are also in red.

Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2010 @ The Photographers’ Gallery

今年で14年目を迎える、Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2010展が、The Photographers’ Gallery（フォトグラファーズ・ギャラリー）で、2月12日から4月18日まで開催中だ。この賞は、2008年10月1日から2009年9月30日の間に、ヨーロッパ写真界に貢献した写真家に贈られる国際写真賞で、受賞者は3月17日に発表される（昨年の展覧会は過去のエントリー参照）。

今年の候補者は、イギリス人のDonovan Wylie（ドノヴァン・ワイリー）とAnna Fox（アナ・フォックス）、フランス人のSophie Ristelhueber（ソフィ・リステルユベール）、そしてアメリカ人のZoe Leonard（ゾーイ・レオナード）で、候補4人のうち3人が女性だ。フォックスの作品は「simultaneously mundane and bizarre aspects of British life（平凡だけれどちょっと変なイギリス生活）」を捉える。レオナードは過去30年間、個人商店や潰れかけた店のショーウィンドーやグラフィックスなど、都市の光景を撮り続けてきた。リステルユベールは、25年以上にわたり、ボスニアやイラク、レバノンなど紛争地帯の建物や光景を撮影することで、人間の争いがもたらした傷跡を表現している。ベルファストで生まれ育ったワイリーは、和平合意後の北アイルランドをテーマに、民族としてのアイデンティティ、歴史、そして領土問題を提起してきた。

候補作品の中で特に目を引いたのは、2000年に閉鎖された、IRAのメンバーを収監してきた北アイルランド・ベルファスト郊外にあるメイズ刑務所を撮影したワイリーの作品。少し前に、1981年に発生したこの政治犯刑務所での一連の抗議運動を描いた映画「ハンガー」を見たせいか、実際にここで起こった出来事を想像し、今は使われていない刑務所の写真が漂わせる身の毛のよだつ、不気味さをいっそう強く感じられた。

Now in its 14th year, the annual Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2010 started on February 12 (until April 18) at the Photographers’ Gallery. The prize rewards a photographer who has made a significant contribution to European photography between 1 October 2008 to 30 September 2009, and the winner will be announced on March 17  (see past entry for the last year’s exhibition).

The nominees are two British photographers Donovan Wylie and Anna Fox, French Sophie Ristelhueber, and US born Zoe Leonard, and three are women among four nominees. Fox’s works examine the “simultaneously mundane and bizarre aspects of British life,” while Leonard has recorded normally unregarded urban landscapes such as small-time shopfront graphics and run-down shop windows for the last 30 years. Over 25 years, Ristelhueber has been examining the impact of human conflict on architecture and landscape in conflict zones such as Bosnia, Iraq, Lebanon and kuwait. Born and raised in Belfast, Wylie focuses on post-conflict Northern Ireland and its identity, history and territory.

What was most striking for me is Wylie’s works about the Maze Prison outside Belfast, where used to house IRA prisoners and closed in 2000. I felt intensified creepiness and eeriness from these rather sterilized images, because I saw the movie “Hunger” on TV recently about the 1981 Irish hunger strike, and imagined what happened in side the wall.

A Prophet (Un prophète) @ Barbican Cinema

今日もバービカン・シネマの月曜割引を利用して、先週封切りとなったフランス映画「A Prophet（原題「Un prophète」、「預言者」の意）」を観た。「夜中のピアニスト」「リード・マイ・リップス」等で高い評価を得た、ジャック・オーディアール監督作品で、第62回カンヌ国際映画祭でグランプリを受賞、第53回ロンドン国際映画祭でもBest Film Award（最優秀賞）に輝いた。イギリスやアメリカでも批評家の高い評価を得ており、2月2日に発表されるアカデミー賞外国語映画賞ノミネートの呼び声も高い。

警察官への暴行で6年の刑に処された18歳のマリックは、アラブ系フランス人の孤児。11歳で学校を辞めたため、読み書きもできない。知り合いもなく刑務所に到着したマリックは、他の囚人たちより若く、脆弱に見える。刑務所を牛耳るコルシカ島出身のマフィアのリーダーに刑務所内での殺人を命じられてから、彼らの使い走りとなったマリックは、様々な「任務」をこなすうちに、多くのルールを学び、タフに成長、リーダーの信用を勝ち取る。コルシカン・マフィアに仕えつつ、賢明で向こう見ずなマリックは、イスラム系の囚人たちにもネットワークを広げ、独自の麻薬取引ビジネスを発展、フランスの都市近郊を根城とする移民の裏社会のリーダーに成長していく。

2時間半という上映時間を長く感じないほど、巧みなストーリー展開とスタイリッシュな映像に引き込まれた。何も知らない移民の若者が、自分自身の機転と魅力を頼りに生き延び、暗黒社会のリーダーに成長していくという、いわばサクセスストーリーだが、刑務所の実態やその中に生きる囚人たちの姿、グループ間の抗争等がリアルに描かれ、現実味がある。増え続ける移民、特に旧植民地の北アフリカ系イスラム教徒の移民たちの刑務所での台頭は、貧困や教育の欠如、人種差別等、フランス社会の問題を映し出している。刑務所系映画はあんまり見ないが、この手の映画としては上出来だと思う。ただ、刑務所や厳しい社会を生き抜くためには仕方ないのかもしれないけれども、主人公がやっていることは所詮モラルの欠けた犯罪行為。マリックの成功は、刑務所や裏社会と住む世界が違う私たちにとっては魅惑的かもしれないけれど、いわゆる普通の成功を夢見ることのできない貧しい移民たちの希望の星にはなってほしくない。

We went to see a new French crime film “A Prophet (French: Un prophète)” at Barbican Cinema with Monday discount. A Prophet, the winner of the Grand Prix at 2009 Cannes Film Festival and Best Film Award of the 53rd London Film Festival, is directed by Jacques Audiard, obtained a high recognition with “The Beat that My Heart Skipped (De battre mon cœur s’est arrêté)” and “Read My Lips (Sur mes lèvres)”  This film won a heart of British and American movie critiques, and makes Academy Foreign Film Award shortlist (nomination will be announced on February 2nd).

Found guilty of assault on a policeman and sentenced to six years in prison, an 18-year old French-Arab orphan Malik El Djebena (Tahar Rahim)  can neither read nor write, as he left school at the age of 11. Arriving at the jail alone, he appears younger and more fragile than the other convicts. Cornered by the Corsican Mafia leader César Luciani who rules the prison, he is given a number of “missions” to carry out, toughening him up, and wins the trust of the mafia leader. While he is working for Corsican Mafia, Malik, unafraid and a fast learner, also creates his own network with Muslim inmates as well. Balancing between Corsicans and Muslims, he discreetly develops his drug dealing business and works his way up through the criminal ranks, becoming a leader of all of France’s immigrant suburbs.

The film is so intriguing and absorbing that I didn’t feel its screening time of 150 min at all. The film shows us harsh realities of a life in prison, survival and battle between different groups, without glamor. A rise of Muslim inmates from former French colonies in north Africa, reflect social problems that French society is facing, such as lack of education, poverty and discrimination. I don’t usually fancy a jail movie, but I think A Prophet is thought-provoking, well-made move of its genre. It is a success story that young and naive immigrant teenager survives on his own quick-wittedness and charm, and climbs up to the top of the criminal underworld. Malik’s success story may be fascinating for us who live in a different world from him, but what he does in the movie is opportunistic, immoral, and is a crime. I hope Malik won’t be a role model for many young poor immigrants, who can’t dream of ‘normal’ success in a society where they don’t feel belonging to.
