The Happenstance Bar & Restaurant @ Ludgate Hill, St. Paul

以前書いたFollyやRefineryを含め、現在ロンドンに6店舗を有するDrake & Morganグループが少し前、セント・ポール大聖堂近くに新しい店「Happenstance」をオープンさせた。天井の高い広々とした店内や、むき出しのパイプといったインダストリアルなパーツをちりばめたスタイリッシュなインテリア等、姉妹店とかなり共通点が見られるので、名前は違えどチェーンみたいなものだ。

Happenstanceは、レストランとバーエリアの他、カクテルカウンター、デリ、そして花屋まであり、週7日休みなしで、朝食、ブランチ＆ランチ、ディナー、深夜のおつまみまで1日中、「地元産の旬の食材」で作った料理を提供している。ウェブサイトには「to late（遅くまで）」と月曜から土曜までの閉店時間を明示していないので、平日夜遅くに行く時は注意が必要。

地の利もいいし、開店時間も長い。味もまあまあ、値段も高くも安くもなく、何よりテーブル数が多いので満席の危険もなく、便利に使える店だと思う。でも魂がないというか、情熱や意気込みといったものが感じられないというか。まあ、この類いの店にそのようなものを期待するのが間違っているのだが。

The owner of six food & drink venues in London including the Folly and the Refinery, Drake & Morgan group opened another venue near St Paul Cathedral, the Happenstance bar & restaurant. You can see similarities with its sister venues, such as generous amount of space with high ceiling and stylish interiors with industrial feel. The names are different, but it is sort of a chain.

The Happenstance encompasses also deli, mixology table and florist as well as bar and food area, and opens all-day 7 days a week, serving “seasonal & locally sourced” cuisine, from breakfast, brunch & lunch, dinner & late night bites. Their closing hour (Mon-Sat) is vague, just writing “to late” on its web, so be careful when you head for there at 2am at Monday night.

The Happenstance is surely an useful venue, with its convenient location, (slightly) above average food, acceptable pricing, and the big space where you have high probability to get a table without fail, but I don’t feel ‘soul’ or ‘passion’, and I know I shouldn’t expect such things from the venue like this.

Cortado Coffee & Cava Bar @ Gainsborough Studios, New North Road

Shoreditch Parkの北にあるアパートメント・コンプレックス、Gainsborough Studiosの中にあるカフェ・Cortado。ウェブサイトもFacebookページもなくツイッターのみ（@CortadoN1）、開店時間や電話番号等インターネット上でもほとんど情報がない穴場のようなこのお店、去年7月のオープン（Twitter情報）以来、ずっと気になっていた。

中は、グレーの壁や白木造りのテーブルといった淡い色調をベースに、黄色い椅子がアクセントになった、北欧風インテリア。ツイッターの紹介欄では、「coffee & cava bar specialising in delicious Spanish goodies（美味しいスペイン料理を出すコーヒー＆カバ・バー）」とあり、メニューを見た限りさほどスペイン風とは思えないが、チョリソやハモン・セラーノ等を使った卵料理やサラダ、サンドイッチなど、朝食、ブランチ、ランチメニューがある。夜は営業していない（と思う）のに、スパニッシュ・ワイン（赤・白・ロゼ・カバ）やビールもあるのが、いかにもショーディッチらしい。

この日のランチは、BLTサンドイッチ（£4.50）とチョリソ入りスクランブルエッグ（£6）。サンドイッチは好きな具を選べるカスタムオーダー式で、肉入りで£4.50、ベジタリアンだと£4。ハーフサイズ（£2.50 / £2.20）にして、サラダ（£5）やスープ（£3）と組み合わせたりもできる。ホーローのお皿や木のボードなど、プレゼンテーションも洒落ていて、手作り料理もコーヒーも想像以上。なかなか行きづらい場所にあるのがネックだが、近くにお越しの際は是非！

Cortado

Cortado is a little cute cafe, located inside the large apartment complex Gainsborough Studios, north of Shoreditch Park. We wanted to try this cafe for a while and finally we had a chance to visit. Cortado doesn’t have a website or facebook page, just twitter account (@CortadoN1), and I couldn’t find much information about this anonymous cafe, including telephone number and opening hours, except the fact that it opened in last July and the location.

The cafe is tasteful decorated in Scandinavian style, with yellow chairs making a good contrast with soft colours such as light gray walls and light-wood tables. Their twitter page calls themselves as a “coffee & cava bar  specialising in delicious spanish goodies”. The menu doesn’t seem so Spanish, but they offer breakfast, brunch & lunch menu such as a selection of egg dishes and salads with chorizo or serrano ham, as well as sandwiches. I don’t think it opens at night, but they also have ‘booze’ menu with a selection of Spanish wines (whites, reds, rose, and sparklings) and Estrella beer – very Shoreditch-y.

Our lunch of the day was BLT sandwiches (£4.50) and scrambled egg with chorizo (£6). They make a custom sandwich with ingredients of your choice (meat option £4.50 / vegies £4). You can also order “halfwich” (£2.50 / £2.20) and make your own combo with soup (£3) or salad (£5). Their make-to-order food was hearty and yummy, and their coffee was equally high standard. The presentation of food on an enamel plate and a wooden board was very cute as well. The only problem is their “not easy to reach” location, but if you happen to be nearby, you should definitely try!

Royal Star Restaurant & Bar @ City Road

最近お気に入りのレストラン＆バー・Royal Star。以前はサッカーやスポーツの試合等を放送する、近所のおっさん達が集まるフツーのパブだったけれど、最近モダンなガストロパブに生まれ変わった。毎日、ランチ（週末はブランチ）からディナーまで休みなしで提供される、ラテンアメリカ風テーストを加えた料理（メニュー）はなかなか美味。前菜、メインの他にサンドイッチもあり、私たちのランチはもっぱらこちら。ドリンクは、アメリカやイギリス等のCraft Beer（地ビール）の他、ワインも10ポンド台のお手頃価格から50ポンドを超えるものまで充実している。また各種コーヒーの外、Pai Mu Tan（白牡丹・白茶）やEgyptian Nights（エジプト産ミントとカモミール）、Regent’s Park（パパイヤ、パイナップル、イチゴ、ラズベリー、バラ）等、珍しい紅茶セレクションも。

店内は広々としていて（奥にもう一つ広い部屋と中庭もある）、落ち着いた内装で居心地もいいのに、地味な外見のせいか、オープンしたてのせいか、ロケーションのせいか、大勢のお客で賑わっているのを見たことがない（遅めのランチ時間以外は行ったことないけど）。最近よくお世話になるだけに、早々にクローズしないといいんだけどなあ。

This is our recent favorite lunch place, Royal Star restaurant & bar on City Road. The place was used to be an boring neighbourhood pub showing football and sports games, but recently was reborn as a sleek gastro pub style venue. Serving lunch and dinner 7 days a week as well as weekend brunch, their food with a Latin American twist (menu) is quite tasty. In addition to small dishes and mains, there are also sandwiches for a casual eating, which we usually have for lunch. About drink, they have a choice of craft beers, mainly from UK and US, as well as a good selection of wines from reasonable to good quality over £50. They also have a selection of coffees as well as rare kind of teas such as Pai Mu Tan, Egyptian Nights and Regent’s Park.

The place is very spacious (there is also adjacent room on the back and courtyard) and pleasantly comfortable, but we have never seen the restaurant packed of people though we went there only after busy lunch time, probably because of its recent opening, its location, or its modest exterior. We really hope it won’t fail, as we like the place & food!

This Bright Field @ Cambridge Heath Road, Bethnal Green

今年の夏にオープンした、The Bright Fieldカフェ＆レストランは、Ombra、Hackney Bureau、Hurwundekiなどに続き、イースト・エンドのCambridge Heath Roadに近年誕生したヒップなカフェの一つ。以前お花屋さんだった場所にできたこの店の名前は、Spitalfieldsについて書かれたWilliam Taylorの本のタイトルから取られており、その名「Bright Field」のごとく陽当たりがよく明るい店内は、気取らずシンプルで居心地がいい。店の真ん中に陣取っているオープンキッチンで作られる、朝食＆ランチ（月〜金）、ディナー（木〜土）、週末のブランチと、新鮮でハイクオリティだけどイースト・ロンドンお手頃価格の食事は、オープン数ヶ月にして既に大人気。ゆっくり食事したいなら、混雑する時間は避けた方がベター。

The Bright Field café/restaurant opened in this summer of 2012, where used to be a florist, I believe. This is a recent addition to the Cambridge Heath Road on East End, where some hip eateries opened recently such as Ombra, Hackney Bureau and Hurwundeki. With its name taken from William Taylor book about Spitalfields, this bright casual-chic café, equipped with a spacious open kitchen visible by customers, has been very popular because of their fresh & high quality food for breakfast & lunch (Mon-Fri), supper (Thu-Sat), and weekend brunch with affordable East End price. If you want to dine relaxingly, avoid the busy time.

カンバーランド・ソーセージ、粒マスタード、トマト・レリッシュ、Hampshire

産watercress（オランダガラシ）入りサンドイッチと、ベーコン、オーガニックの卵から作られたマヨネーズ、アボカドのサンドイッチ（各£6）。美味しかったけれど、お腹ぺこぺこだったので、もう少し大きかったら嬉しかった。

Cumberland sausage, grain mustard, tomato relish, Hampshire watercress sandwich and Sweet cured bacon, organic egg mayonnaise, avocado sandwich (£6 each). Those sandwiches were good but I wish it would be a bit bigger – we were quite hungry!

Caravan Kings Cross @ Granary Square

クラーケンウェルのExmouth Marketにある人気カフェ＆レストラン・Caravanの新しい支店が、キングスクロス駅の北、Filing Stationの近くのGranary Squareにオープンした。Caravan Kings Crossは、Central Saint Martins College of Art and Designの新校舎で、古い穀物倉を改築したGranary Buildingの中にある。天井の高い、広々とした店内は、配水管が見えるむき出しの木の天井や白く塗られたレンガ壁といったインダストリアルな内装に、家具は暖かさを感じる木のテーブルとパッドのついた布製の椅子と、殺風景にならないように上手くミックスさせ、居心地のいい空間に仕上げている。

朝食からディナーまで、All day diningでいつでも食事が可能。本店と同じく、メニューにはクリエイティブな無国籍風料理が並び、週末はブランチメニューに変わる。私たちのお気にりは、モッツァレラ、トマト、バジルのピッツァ。頑張ってユニークなメニューを考えているシェフには悪いが、私的には奇抜な料理より、このようなシンプルな一皿の方が落ち着くのだ。

Popular venue on hip Exmouth Market in Clerkenwell, Caravan recently opened its new branch on Granary Square in the north of Kings Cross Station, close to Filing Station. Caravan Kings Cross is in the converted Grade II listed Granary Building which houses Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. The restaurant creates great harmony with industrial chic interior with high wooden ceiling with bare pipes and brick walls painted in white, together with warm wooden tables and gray padded chairs.

Caravan Kings Cross offers all day dining from breakfast to dinner. Like its original venue, they offer creative dishes influenced by many different cuisine of the world, and its menu change to brunch menu on weekends. Our favorite dish there is pizza with mozzarella, tomato and basil. I am sorry for a chef who created the unique international menu, but we feel more comfortable with this kind of simple food –maybe we are too conservative with food…
