Indian/Bangladeshi Restaurants in East London: Chaat @ Redchurch Street

ロンドンに住むまで知らなかったのだが、「Asian」と言うと、アメリカでは主に中国人や日本人、韓国人等、東アジアの人々を意味するが、イギリスでは一般的に、インドやパキスタン、バングラデシュ等南アジアから来た人たちを指す。アジア人と言うと歴史的背景から南アジア人が多いイギリスと、東アジアからの移民が多いアメリカの違いだろう。ちなみに、イギリスで東アジア人は概して「Oriental」と呼ばれるが、この言葉はアメリカではpolitically incorrect、差別的だとしてタブーだとされる。なんでこんな話をしたかと言うと、イーストロンドンで最近行った、「Asian」レストランのことを数日に渡って書こうと思ったからで、たまたまこのことが頭に浮かんだのだ。

恥ずかしながら私もそうだったのだが、ロンドンに来て間もない人たちや外国人観光客や、ブリックレーンのカレー屋はインド料理屋だと思っている人が多いが、実はブリックレーンはバングラデシュ人地区で、あの辺のレストランはほとんどがバングラデシュ人の経営だ。

バングラデシュ料理店・Chaatは、ブリックレーンではないが、すぐ近くのトレンディなエリア・Redchurch Streetにある。今はあまり行かなくなってしまったけど、Pizza EastやFranzé & Evans、Allpress、Burro e Salviaなどにランチをしに行っていた時、ライトブルーの外観のこの小さなお店を見つけた。ランチタイムはやっていないので、ディナーしに数回通った。ヒンディー語やウルドゥー語で「savory snacks（甘くない、おかず系の軽食）」を意味するChaatはバングラデシュの家庭料理を得意とし、5つのカテゴリーに分かれたメニューから好きなものを選ぶ（5種類全て選ばなくてもいい）。ブリックレーンのセンスのない店に比べて雰囲気はよく、ブリックレーン並みのリーズナブルなお値段。でも、料理は少しパサパサ感があり味もなんかビシッとしてなくて、3回行って3回とも、とても美味しいとは思えなかった。バングラデシュ料理のことはほとんど知らないので（イスラム教徒が多いので豚肉を使わないという以外、インド料理と区別がつかない）、何がどう悪いとは言えないのだが。

The thing that I didn’t know until we came to London is that, the term ‘Asian’ generally indicates South Asians in UK, such as Indians, Pakistani, and Bangladeshi, on contrary to North America in where Asian refers to East Asians like Chinese, Japanese and Koreans. Instead, East Asians are often called ‘Oriental’ here, whereas the term is regarded as rather offensive in America. Interesting. This is probably because majority of Asians are South Asians in UK, due to the colonial histories, but East Asians in USA. The reason why I talk about this is because I want to write about some South Asian restaurants we tried recently in East London for few days, and this fact just popped up in my mind.

Many foreign tourists as well as newcomers to UK from abroad may think that curry restaurants in Brick Lane are Indians. But it is not true. I didn’t know either at the beginning, but Brick Lane is Bangladeshi neighborhood, and what I thought as Indian restaurants are actually Bangladeshi-owned.

Bangladeshi restaurant Chaat is not on Brick Lane but is few steps away on trendy Redchurch Street. We spotted this little place with light blue facade when we often went there for lunch at Pizza East, Franzé & Evans, Allpress and Burro e Salvia (but not anymore). They don’t open for lunch so we went there for dinner. ‘Chaat‘, “savory snacks” in Hindi and Urdu, serves home-style Bangladeshi food and you choose a dish from five categories (menu). The place is cute and cozy, unlike their counterparts in Brick Lane, and the price is moderate like others. But we were not so impressed by their food. We thought their dishes were bit dry and dull, and didn’t click us. We went there three times, but we got the same feeling every time. I am not Bangladeshi food specialist (in fact, I can’t distinguish Indian food and Bangladeshi, except that Muslim Bangladeshi don’t use pork), and don’t know how to explain why…

Labour and Wait @ Redchurch Street

Labour and Waitは、レトロで温かみのある、飽きのこないデザインの生活雑貨を扱うお店。2000年に、ブリックレーン近くのCheshire Streetにオープン。昨年、Redchurch Streetにも一回り大きい店をオープンさせた。世界中から、職人たちが昔ながらの製法で作る、機能的かつ現代でも通用するデザインの商品を仕入れており、日本の野田琺瑯のホーロー鍋やポットなども取り扱う。

日本でも似たような店を見かけたし、日本人が好きそうなお店だなあと思っていたが、このブログのためにお店の事を調べていたら、なんと日本にも11店舗あるんだそう（Bshopという会社が展開）。そのうち何店かは、日本に一時帰国した際に立ち寄っていた。道理で見覚えがあると思った。

Labour and Wait is a shop selling retro and functional everyday household goods for kitchen, home and garden. First opened in 2000 on Cheshire Street off Brick Lane, now it has a new larger store on hip Redchurch Street. The store deals with quality products made by specialist makers from around the world, who continue to manufacture their goods in the traditional way to their original designs, including enamel cookware by Japan’s Noda Horo.

I thought the store looked familiar when we went there, and found out while I was checking their website for this blog, that Labour and Wait has 11 outlets in Japan, concessions sited within a store called Bshop! I went to some of those shops several times when I visited my family in Japan – I just couldn’t connect those shops to Labour and Wait!!

Another Sunday Market @ Shoreditch

Pizza Eastでロンドンでの今年初のランチをとった後、ぶらぶら歩いて、Shoreditch High Street駅から東、ブリックレーンに連なる道に出ているマーケットを見て歩いた。昨年、Shoreditch High Street駅がオープンしてますます再開発が進み、ヒップでトレンディになりつつあるショーディッチにおいて、猥雑なイースト・ロンドン的雰囲気を色濃く残すこのマーケットは、かなり衝撃的。駅の横の果物・野菜の屋台を皮切りに、日用品や電化製品、文房具、自転車用品、古着、アンティーク、中古家具まで、日常生活に必要な物が何でも手に入り、イタリアやフランスの食品を売る屋台もある。が、売っている物の多くは、安物かガラクタ、もしかすると盗品も混じっているかもしれない。

We walked around a market on a street connecting Shoreditch High Street station and Brick lane, after the first lunch in London this year at Pizza East. It is quite a shock to see such a market with stereotypical chaotic East London atmosphere in Shoreditch, where is becoming trendy and hip after a series of redevelopment projects together with an opening of the new station last year. Starting with fruits and vegetable sellers next to the station, you can basically buy anything you need for daily life from household products, home electronics, stationaries, bicycle parts, used clothing and accessories, second-hand furniture, antiques and all kinds of bric-a-brac, as well as Italian and French food – but unfortunately mostly cheap stuffs and junk, or even possibly some stolen things.

何故か、自転車パーツを売る店が多い。Brick Laneは盗難自転車を売っている事で密かに有名だが、そこで買った中古自転車をチューンアップするためか。

There are some vendors selling bicycle parts. Is it for a tune-up of a bicycle purchased from Brick Lane (known for selling stolen bikes)??

駐車場と思われるスペースに入ると、そこは品物が無造作に置かれ、ゴミが散乱するワイルドな空間。服や靴、がらくたが積んである入口には人だかりが。この中から何をどうやって探すんだろう？？

When we entered a space supposedly used as a car-park on non-market days, it was a chaos – products and trashes were all over the place. There was a mountain of clothes, shoes and bric-a-brac. How on earth people find anything from it??

この無秩序さは、ロンドンというより、発展途上国のマーケットのよう。

This sort of disorder is more like a market in developing countries, rather than London.

雑多な人々、品物に圧倒される。友人や観光客にお薦めするようなマーケットではないけれど、ロンドンにはこういうところもあるという事で。

We were overwhelmed by people and stuffs. I don’t necessarily recommend the market for tourists or friends, but just to show another side of London, for your interest.

Special Report: The Dispossessed @ London Evening Standard

今日から5日連続で掲載される予定のThe London Evening Standard（イブニング・スタンダード）の特集、「The Dispossessed（土地や 家などを奪われた人々）」の一日目の記事を読んだ。貧富の差の激しいロンドンの、見捨てられた貧しい人たちの状況をリポートした、なかなかショッキングな内容だ。ヨーロッパで最も豊かな市であるロンドンでは、6人に1人の子供は誰も働いていない、生活保護で生計を支えている家庭に育ち、この3年間で低所得者層は130万人増えた。ロンドンの人口の4分の1にあたる190万人は学歴も資格もないか、あっても低レベルのものだそうだ。反対に、この不況下、公的資金を注入された銀行を含む、銀行員への高額ボーナスが問題視され、政府は2万5000ポンド（約360万円）以上のボーナスに課税する税率50％の1回限りの特別税を決定、溜飲の下がった国民も多いのだが、世論や経済状況を考えると、既に充分すぎるほどお給料をもらっている銀行員の方々には我慢していただくしかないかなと思う。異常な額のボーナスや給料は、どこかで歯止めを加えないと、さらなる金融リスクを誘発する要因にもなるし、余りにも度が過ぎると、フランス革命時の特権階級のように怒れる庶民に襲撃される可能性もある。すでに裕福な生活をするだけのお金はあるのだから、フェラーリを我慢してBMWで、5億円の豪華マンションでなくて3億円ぐらいの物件で満足してほしいものだ。

ロンドン東部の4区（私の住んでいるHackney、生活エリアのIslington、ブリックレーンを含む Tower Hamlets、Newham。イーストエンドと呼ばれ、昔から労働者階級が多く住む）は、市内で最も貧困レベルが高く、48％もの子供が貧困家庭に育つ。しかし、ハックニーやイズリントンなどは、金融街シティも近いので、高級アパートやお洒落なエリアも多く、場所によっては億ションの隣に公営住宅（Council Housing）が隣接している。記事で書かれているのは、おしゃれなカフェやレストラン、セレクトショップが並ぶイズリントンのUpper Street（アッパー・ストリート）。トニー・ブレア前首相が以前住んでいて、政権を取る前にブラウン現首相と会談し政策を語り合った、労働党政権いわれのあるエリアだ。1997年にブレアは首相となり、その2年後には、子供の貧困を2010年までに半減、10年間の間になくすという誓約をしたが、現実は良くなるどころか悪化している。労働党と言いながら、「第三の道」政策で経済に力を入れ産業活性化を図ったため、景気は良くなったが、富める者はますます富み、貧しい者はますます貧しくなる、という結果になってしまった。そのアッパー・ストリートのど真ん中の公営住宅に住む少年（写真上）は、アッパー・ストリートは「useless（使えない、無益）」で、何もすることがないと言う。週たった£50で暮らす彼は外食もほとんどしたことがなく、大学に入るにも、その申請にかかる費用の£19が払えない。これまでに32もの職に申し込んだけれど、どれも面接以前に拒否され、自信も希望も失っている。アッパー・ストリートのトレンディ・カフェ、Ottolenghi（ちょっと高いけれど、ケーキ類が美味しい）等にたむろう、「Champagne socialist（シャンパンを飲む社会主義者）」と呼ばれる、弱者の味方を気取るリベラル左翼中流階級のイズリントン住人の集まるエリアだけに、なんだか皮肉な話だ。多分、彼らはこの少年のような人たちと交わることはないだろうし、どんな生活しているのかも想像がつかないだろう。

I read the first article of “The Dispossessed,” a five-day special report on London’s forgotten poor in the London Evening Standard. It is is quite shocking article about the city hugely divided between rich and poor. In London, the richest capital in Europe, 1 in 6 children grow up in workless households, and the number of people in low income households have risen 1.3 million over the past three years. 1.9 million of people, a quarter of the city’s population, have no or low qualifications. On the other hand, under this tough economic circumstances, huge bonuses for bankers, including some banks rescued with billions of public money, are acutely criticized, and one-off 50% levy on all bank bonuses worth more than £25,000 enforced by the government make many people feel gratified. Considering public sentiment after all the chaos banks and bankers caused, there is no other choice for bankers but to be generous and altruistic to the society. There should be some sort of brake worldwide for this out-of-control bonus to the bankers, which possibly cause another financial crisis in the future – otherwise they may be all lynched by the angry public, like what happened to aristocrats during the French Revolution. They already have enough money to enjoy their privileged life, so just downgrade from Ferrari to BMW and take £3 million flat instead of paying £5 million, during this tough time.

London’s four boroughs in East End; Islington (where we hang around), Hackney (where we live), Tower Hamlets (where Brick Lane is) and Newham, are the capital’s most deprived boroughs, where 48 per cent of children live in poverty. However, Hackney and Islington are quite close to the financial district the City, and there are some trendy areas with expensive apartments and posh stores and restaurants, side by side with the council housing blocks. Islington is the centre of the article, where the social-reforming New Labour project began: this is where former prime minister Tony Blair lived and it is here at Granita restaurant in fashionable Upper Street, that he and current prime minister Gordon Brown met in 1994 to discuss their rise to power. Blair became Prime Minister in 1997 and two years later he made his pledge to “end child poverty within a generation” and to “halve it by 2010” , but the reality is far worse than they planned. The New Labor government revitalized the economy, and as a result the country as a whole had enjoyed prosperity, but the gap between rich and the poor have widened. In the article, a boy who live in the social housing block in the heart of Upper street (photo above), but for him Upper street is ‘useless’ and there is nothing to do there. He has never eaten in a restaurant in his life, except all-you-can-eat for £5 buffet. He lives on £50 a week budget, and cannot even afford to pay for £19 college application form. His self-confidence has been crashed after he had been turned down 32 jobs without a chance to have an interview. It is an irony that this is the same area where liberal middle class “Champagne socialists,” who live around Upper street and hang around trendy Ottolenghi, talk about social justice – I am afraid that they don’t mix with people like him and have no clue what kind of life he lives through…

Franzé & Evans Italian Deli @ Redchurch Street

ブリックレーンの北、Redchurch Streetにあるイタリアン・デリ、Franzé & Evans。名前がイタリアンっぽくないので、メニューを見るまでイタリアンだとは気づかなかった。入口近くの大きな棚には、オリーブオイルやバルサミコ酢、パスタ、パッサータ（トマトを裏ごししたピューレ）等のイタリアの食品がきれいにディスプレイされ、デリカウンターのショーケースには、サラミやチーズ、そして手作りのパスタソースややケーキ類が並ぶ。パスタを中心に、イートインもテイクアウトもできる週変わりのランチメニューは、なかなかボリュームがあり、味も満足点。ステンレス製の椅子やオセロ風の白黒の床など、インテリアはちょっと時代遅れの感が否めないけれど、カジュアルに美味しくランチできるイタリアン・デリは、チェルシー＆ケンジントンやロンドン西部には多いけれど、イースト・ロンドンにはあまりない貴重な存在。この辺りは、Pizza EastやAlbion Cafe等、いろいろいいお店もあるので、どこでランチするか迷ってしまう（でもブリック・レーンのカレー屋は、客引きが押しが強くてしつこいし、材料や衛生状態等あんまり信用できなさそうなので行かない）。

Franzé & Evans is an Italian deli on Redchurch Street, just the north of Brick Lane. Their name doesn’t sound like Italian, so we didn’t recognize it is an Italian deli until we saw their menu. Italian groceries such as olive oils, balsamic vinegar, dry pasta, and tomato passata, are neatly displayed on the large black shelves, and you see salamis and cheese, as well as handmade pasta sauces and cakes, in the showcases at the deli counter. Weekly lunch menu that you can eat-in or take-out, mainly pasta dishes, is fairly large and good. Although the interior is a bit outdated, like silver steel chairs and black & white floor, but a casual+fast Italian eatery is rarity in East London, although there are many in the West. There are some nice places for lunch in the area, such as Pizza East and Albion Cafe, and sometimes we can’t decide where to go! (but we don’t go to curry houses in Brick Lane – their touters are pushy and naggy, and we are not sure if we can trust their hygiene and choice of ingredients…)
