“Diver” by Ron Haselden @ Diespeker Wharf, Regent’s Canal

エンジェルからの帰り、Regent’s Canal（リージェンツ・カナル）を歩いていた時見た光景。調べてみると、子供たちの描いた絵を元にして、アーティスト・Ron Haselden（ロン・ハーセルデン）が制作された「Diver（ダイバー）」だそうだ。これは、600人のロンドンの小学生とハーセルデンのコラボレーションで、Paddington Basin（パディントン船着き場）からオリンピック開催地まで、リージェンツ・カナル沿いのの9マイルの遊歩道を、8つのanimated light sculptures（動く光の彫刻）で飾ろうという、オリンピック・アート・プロジェクト「GAMES」の一環。ロンドンの様々な場所を、著名アーティストによる光のインスタレーションで飾ろうというプロジェクト「Art Lights London」によって制作された。残り7つのインスタレーションも随時設置される予定で、運河沿いを行き交う人々の目を楽しませてくれそう。

「Diver」は2月2日夜、飛び込みのオリンピック銀メダリストであるPeter Waterfield（ピーター・ウォーターフィールド）によって点灯、お披露目された。改装されたビクトリア時代の製材所・Diespeker Wharf横にクレーンで吊り下げられたこの作品は、今年度末まで見ることができる。暗くなってライトアップされた方が綺麗だと思うが、薄暗い運河沿いを歩くのはちょっと怖いので、夜見に行かれる方は気をつけて。

This is what I found when I was walking back on Regent’s Canal from Angel. Later I found out by googling, that it is called “Diver“, created by artist Ron Haselden from drawings by local schoolchildren. This is the first of eight animated light sculptures of an Olympic art project “GAMES”, which is an collaboration between 600 London primary school children and Haselden, and is produced by “Art Lights London“, a cultural initiative to creating a series of light installations by renowned artists. The rest of seven sculptures will be placed along 9-mile trail of Regent’s Canal from Paddington Basin to the Olympic site, and will entertain pedestrians and cyclists passing through the canal , together with “Diver“.

This light sculpture was unveiled and switched on by British Olympic silver medallist diver Peter Waterfield on February 2. You can see this work suspended from a crane at the Victorian timber mill Diespeker Wharf, until the end of this year. It must look better after dark with lights, but be careful when you walk along the dim-lighted canal at night!

London’s One Room Hotel: “A Room for London” Art Project @ Southbank Centre

Southbank Centre（サウスバンク・センター）の上に乗っかった船。これは、London 2012 Festivalの一環のアートプロジェクト「A Room for London」、テムズ川を見下ろす一部屋だけのホテル。London 2012 Festivalは、北京オリンピック終了後の2008年9月より4年間に渡って行われている文化芸術プログラム「Cultural Olympiad（カルチュラル・オリンピアード）」のハイライトとして、6月21日から9月9日まで、ロンドン・オリンピックの開催中、無料コンサートやアート展など、約1000ものパフォーマンスやイベントが催される他、フェスティバル前にも様々なカウントダウンイベントが行われる予定。

この「A Room for London」は、ジョゼフ・コンラッドの1899年出版の小説「Heart of Darkness（闇の奥）」に出てくる、テムズ川を出発しアフリカのコンゴに至る旅に使われたriverboat（川船）にインスピレーションを得て、David Kohn ArchitectsとアーティストのFiona Bannerが制作した。一晩限り、二人まで宿泊可能で宿泊料は£120〜、公的プロジェクトだからか、メディアも注目する期間限定の特別ホテルなのに、値段はかなり控えめ。あいにく昨年9月9日に始まった1〜6月の予約は開始12分で満室になったけれど、7〜12月の予約は来週19日正午に始まる。メディアでも取り上げられているので応募多数と予測されるけれど、想い出作りに、運試しに申し込んでみるのもいいかも。

A classic boat appeared on the top of Southbank Centre, overlooking the river Thames – this is an arts project “A Room for London” and it is a part of the London 2012 Festival. The London 2012 Festival is a huge cultural celebration, coinciding with the Olympic and Paralympic Games in London, and a culmination of the a four-year programme of cultural events “Cultural Olympiad“, started in 2008 just after Beijing Olympic. From June 21 to September 9, 2012, there will be 1,000 performances and events such as free concerts and art exhibitions, as well as countdown events before the Festival opens.

Inspired by the riverboat captained by Joseph Conrad while in the Congo in 1890, later recreated in his novel Heart of Darkness, David Kohn Architects and artist Fiona Banner created this unique art project. General public can rent out this space for £120〜 for up to two people for one night only. The price is quite reasonable with the premium to stay at the special art project with  limited period and public attention – probably because it is a public event for everybody. Unfortunately the riverboat is sold out during January–June, just 12 minutes after going live on September 8th last year, but bookings for the period of July to December will go on sale online at 12pm on January 19 next week. For Japan Charity Auction: Architecture for Humanity @ HotShoe Gallery

明日6〜8時、Farringdon（ファリンドン）にあるHotshoe Galleryで、津波の被害を受けた東北地方の長期再建に役立てるため、写真のチャリティ・セール／オークション「For Japan」が行われる。8月2〜5日の間、日本や日本文化をテーマとした、世界中から寄せられた写真の中から選ばれた100点を展示。その売上げは、「Architecture for Humanity」の仙台プロジェクトオフィスに直接贈られる。

Architecture for Humanityは、貧困地帯や災害地において、建築の観点から人道的・緊急支援を行うNPOで、現在仙台で、孤児院、アート＆ミュージック・セラピーセンター、地方レベルでの経済復興のための中小ビジネス支援イニシアティブ「urban acupuncture」、日本政府の復興10年計画に含まれていない小さな漁村の再建など様々なプロジェクトを行っている。

There will be a charity print sale/auction of photographs, “For Japan,” tomorrow between 6-8pm at Hotshoe Gallery in Farringdon, to raise funds for the long term reconstruction of the tsunami devastated north east region of Japan. The photographs, which evoke and celebrate Japanese culture, were submitted from all over the world, and selected 100 photographs have been on show from August 2 to 5. The proceeds will go directly to the Architecture for Humanity project office in Sendai.

Architecture for Humanity is a non profit organisation which offers building and design support in response to humanitarian and emergency needs. It is working in Sendai on a number of projects including an orphanage, an art and music therapy centre, an ‘urban acupuncture’ initiative to help get small businesses back on their feet to kick start economic recovery on a local level, a small scale fishing village reconstruction (rebuilding along the coastline is not included in the Japanese government’s 10 year plan).

Hydrogen Bus @ Southbank Mix

Bankside Mix（バンクサイド・ミックス）に最近オープンしたVapianoに行った時に見かけた、Hydrogen Bus（水素バス）。調べてみたら、EUのCUTE（Cleaner Urban Transport for Europe）プロジェクトの一環として、2003〜2007年に試用期間を経て、昨年12月から本格的に運用開始されたという（tfl information / ガーディアン紙記事）。同時に、イギリス最大の水素供給ステーションが東ロンドンのLeytonにオープンした。

ロンドンでは毎年、4300人が大気汚染によって命を落としているという。水素バスは、水蒸気を排出するだけで、大気汚染はゼロ。タンク一杯の水素で、18時間以上運転可能だそうだ。現在、水素バスが走っているRV1ルートは、ロンドン塔、テート・モダン、サウス・バンク・センター、ロンドン・アイ、コヴェント・ガーデンなど、主な観光地を結ぶので、環境に優しい都市・ロンドンをアピールするのにぴったり。環境保護に執念を燃やすボリス・ジョンソン市長は、オリンピックの開催される2012年には、15台の水素タクシーを含む最低150台の水素自動車の導入を目標としている。しかし、水素燃料のタクシーがたったの15台って、少なくない？助成金が出てもコストがかかり過ぎて、この不況の中、個人経営のタクシーには敬遠されるのか。

ちなみにバンクサイド・ミックスのVapianoは、壁一杯の窓から入る太陽光で明るく広々としていて、しかもオープンから間もないせいか客も少なく、ゆったりできる。テート・モダンやバラ・マーケット（周りのレストランはいつも混んでいる）に行くなら、穴場です。

We saw a hydrogen Bus stopping at a bus stop in front of the Bankside Mix, when we went to newly opened Vapiano at the Bankside Mix. After a trial of three hydrogen buses in London between 2003 and 2007 as part of the EU-sponsored CUTE (Cleaner Urban Transport for Europe), the UK’s first permanent hydrogen bus was launched in December 2011 (tfl information / the Guardian article). At the same time, the UK’s largest hydrogen refuelling station opened in Leyton, east London.

It is said that more than 4,300 people lost their lives in London due to poor air quality every year. All that comes out of these hydrogen buses is water vapour and the vehicle can operate for more than 18 hours without refueling. RV1 route, where currently hydrogen buses are operated, connects popular tourist attractions such as the Tower of London, the Tate Modern, the South Bank arts complex, the London Eye and Covent Garden – perfect to appeal ‘clean’ London to visitors. Green-obsessed London mayor Boris Johnson aims to encourage a minimum of 150 hydrogen-powered vehicles on the road by 2012 including 15 hydrogen-powered taxis. Great, but isn’t the number of hydrogen taxis too small? Probably cost conscious self-employed taxi owners don’t want to spend too much money to upgrade to low emission vehicles under this recession, even with some financial incentive from the city government.

By the way, I recommend Vapiano at the Bankside Mix when you go to the Tate Modern or nearby Borough Market where restaurants around are always packed – it is spacious and bright with plenty of sunshine coming through floor-to-ceiling windows, and not many people know it at this moment as opened recently.

Urban Smart Projects “For the love of Dog” by Teddy Baden @ Banner Street

ステンシルアーティスト、Teddy Badenの「Dogs on Whitecross Market」がなくなってしばらく経つWhitecross Streetに、彼の新しい作品「For the love of Dog（犬のために）」が登場した。これは、道路脇にある信号機のコントロールボックス（traffic signal boxes）をアートで飾ろうという「Urban Smart Projects」の一環で、Banner Streetとの交差点にある。また、このプロジェクト作品も同じWhitecross Streetにある。

Urban Smart Projectsは、ロンドン以外でも様々な都市で行われているそう。ちなみに、オーストラリア・ブリスベーンでのプロジェクトの様子は、この方のブログに詳しい。イギリスでは、カウンシル（区役所）は住民から通報を受けると、公共の建物や道路周辺、記念碑などからグラフィティを消去する義務を負う。そのために使われる多額の税金を考えると、逆の思考でいっそアートで塗りつぶしてしまえというのがプロジェクトの主旨。加えて、地域に活力を与え、観光にもビジネスにもプラスになるという、まさに一石二鳥のプロジェクトだとのこと。でもプロのアーティストの作品ばかりじゃないから、玉石混淆だけれどね。

It’s been a while since stencil artist Teddy Baden‘s “Dogs on Whitecross Market” was gone from Whitecross street, but his work is back! His new work “For the love of Dog“, located on Banner Street and Whitecross street, is a part of Urban Smart Projects which aims to turn cities into brighter places by painting of traffic signal boxes with original artwork. You also can see this work on the Whitecross Street as well.

The projects work in a lot of different cities, including Brisbane, Australia (details are here). In UK, a local council is usually responsible for removing graffiti from public buildings, street furniture or monuments when reported. According to the project, the concept is to paint traffic signal boxes, instead of wasting taxpayers’ money for graffiti removal, as well as to provide positive impacts to local communities and delivering a host of positive tourism & business outcomes. It’s a win-win situation – though the works are a mixture of good and bad, as not all of the paintings are done by professional artists.
