Design Hotels Collector’s Edition Annual Book Launch Party @ South Place Hotel

デザイナーズホテルの予約サイト・Design Hotelsが、会社設立20年を記念し、限定版イヤーブックを発行した。私たちはDesign Hotelsにメンバー登録していたため招待状が送られて来たので、Design Hotelsに最近加盟した、リバプールストリート駅近くのSouth Place Hotelで、15日に開催された発行記念パーティに、この特別版イヤーブックを見に行って来た。

現在ベルリンに本部を置くDesign Hotelsは1993年、カリフォルニアに設立。世界40カ国以上の250以上の独立系デザイナーズホテルが参加する、デザイン・インテリア好き御用達のサイトだ。参加ホテルを美しい写真入りで網羅した、800ページのこの限定版「XXL Collecter’s Edition」は、何と25kgもある馬鹿でかい本（写真上）。お値段はなんと€2,500もするのだが、フィンランドのデザイン会社・Artekが特別に製作したAlvar Aalto（アルヴァ・アールト）のStool 60とテーブルがついてくる（写真参照：Wallpaper）。そんなに大枚をはたけないという人のためにも、実用的で小型サイズのAnniversary Edition（ €59.90）も販売している。パーティのゲストには、本の概要とメンバーホテルをコンパクトに網羅した「Directions」（写真下）が無料で配られた。このDirectionsも中々の出来。ウェブサイトでもホテルの写真や概要は見られるし、私的にはこれ１冊で充分かも？

Design Hotels has released a special anniversary edition of its annual book to celebrate their 20th anniversary. The subscribers to Design Hotels were invited to the launch party on May 15th at one of their newly added member hotel, South Place Hotel near Liverpool Street Station, so we grabbed the opportunity to see their new book.

Founded in California in 1993, now Berlin-based Design Hotels has a network of over 250 independent boutique hotels in over 40 countries worldwide. The 800-page limited XXL Collecter’s Edition, showcasing their member hotels, is humongous and weighs 25kg. It cost €2,500 but also comes with Alvar Aalto’s Stool 60 and table, which have been specially customised by Finnish design company Artek (more photos: Wallpaper). They also have smaller and more practical Anniversary Edition for €59.90. For the party guests, they even had smaller free exclusive copy ‘Directions’, including snapshots of the annual book and the directory of the member hotels. Very nice itself!

The Olde Bell Inn @ Hurley, Berkshire

３月も後半だというのに、イギリスは毎日凍えるような寒さで嫌になる。この寒さの中、きれいな空気を吸いに、ロンドン郊外の田舎へ足を伸ばしてみた。

宿泊地はMr & Mrs Smith（過去ブログ参照）で見つけた、ロンドンとオックスフォードの中間に位置する小さな村・HurleyにあるThe Olde Bell。近くのベネディクト会修道院を訪れる人たちの宿泊所として1135年にオープンしたという、現在も営業中のイギリス最古の宿だそう。第二次世界大戦中は、ルマンディー上陸作戦前に、アメリカ諜報部の秘密基地として使われていた近くのLadye Place Mansionを訪れたチャーチル首相やアイゼンハワー米大統領なども宿泊したという由緒ある宿で、エリザベス・テーラーやケーリー・グラントといった錚々たるスターも宿泊者名簿に並ぶ。また、ダスティン・ホフマンの初監督作品「カルテット！人生のオペラハウス」の撮影場所としても使用されたらしい。ちなみに、Mr & Mrs Smithのメンバーになると（無料）、シャンパンのボトル一本が特典でつくのも魅力。

このホテル、敷地は意外に広くて、本館と隣接のMalt House、コテージ風客室を備えたCottage、そして道を挟んで、農業用の納屋を改装したBrick BarnとTithe Barn、Bell Lodgeに、合計48室有する。また、広々とした庭や野菜畑、テニスコートもある。私たちの部屋は、ヴィクトリア時代の建物で、図書館や音楽ルームなどが備わっているMalt Houseで、イギリス版Elle Decorationの初代編集者でインテリア・デザイナーのlse Crawfordがデザインした部屋の小さい方（1泊£135）。ロケーション、値段の割に部屋は狭いけれど、落ち着いた色調でセンスよくまとめられている。バスルームはシャワーのみだけれど、広くて使いやすい。難点は各部屋が水を使う度に聞こえるボイラー音が結構煩い事。眠りの浅い時など、起こされてしまう時もあった。

ディナー、朝食は本館1階にあるレストランで。数部屋に分かれたレストランは広々としていてテーブル数も多く、カントリースタイルをモダンにアレンジしたインテリアは洗練されている。地元産の食材を使った料理は新鮮で美味しく、値段はロンドン並みだけれど、その価値はあり。朝食は、田舎では珍しくフル・ブレックファストではなく、ビュッフェスタイルのコンチネンタル・ブレックファストのみ（温かい食事は別料金）なのが、ちょっと手抜きな印象。Booking.comのレビューでも朝食への不満がちらほら見られる。

Hurleyは小さいけれど、ロンドンやオックスフォードへのアクセスもいいので、住宅価格は国の平均の約5倍もするという裕福な村。特別な見所はないけれど、テムズ川縁をのんびり散歩するのもいいし、近隣の、レガッタで有名なHenley-on-Thamesや、National Trustが管理するお屋敷や庭園を訪れるのもいい。私達もこの旅行で4つNational Trust巡りをした（詳細は明日以降ブログに書く予定）。寒波で春の訪れまだ遠く、庭園には水仙程度しか花が咲いていなかったのが残念。

It’s been freezing cold in UK though it is almost April. Despite of the depressing weather, we traveled to countryside to breath fresh air.

The destination is a tiny village of Hurley in Berkshire, between London and Oxford, and we stayed at The Olde Bell that we found on Mr & Mrs Smith website. Free gift of a bottle of champagne for a member of Mr & Mrs Smith (and it’s free!) was a good incentive too (see details). The Olde Bell is the oldest still-working inn in Britain, first opened its doors in 1135 as a guest house for visitors to the nearby Benedictine Priory. During World War II, Sir Winston Churchill and Dwight D Eisenhower stayed this inn when they visited Ladye Place Mansion, next to the church, which was being used as a secret US intelligence base prior to the Normandy Landings. Other famous guests include Elizabeth Taylor and Cary Grant, and the inn was also used as the filming location for Dustin Hoffman’s first directorial film “Quartet“.

The inn has surprisingly large estate and has total of 48 rooms at the main building “The Inn” and the adjacent Malt House and The Cottage, and two converted barns of Brick Barn and Tithe Barn as well as Bell Lodge across the street. Also there are spacious gardens, vegetable garden and a tennis court as well. Our room “Malt House smaller” (£135/night) is in the victorian building of Malt House which has some gathering spaces such as library and music room, and the room is designed by lse Crawford, an interior designer and founding editor of British Elle Decoration. The room is relatively small with its location and the price, but chic and intimate – design costs. Bathroom has shower only but spacious and bright. The only problem is the noise caused every time someone use water in the bathroom – it woke me up sometimes during the sleep. 

We had dinner and breakfast at the Inn restaurant. This rustic-chic restaurant has few separate rooms and is more spacious than we expected. The food is a little bit pricey, which is almost the same level as London, but their delicious meal using local produce was worth its price. But breakfast was disappointing – it was continental breakfast instead of full breakfast, which is a rarity in British countryside (warm food costs extra) – this seems to me rather a lack of an effort. In fact, some people complains about the breakfast on Booking.com reviews.

Hurley is very small but an affluent village and house prices are approx five times higher than the national average (Wikipedia), due to its easy access to Oxford and London. It is nice to have a lovely walk on the Thames, or visiting Henley-on-Thames, famous for regatta race, and National Trust estates nearby. We visited four National Trust sites this time and I will write about them tomorrow. It was a shame that we couldn’t see those gardens with flowers due to this cold weather!

Gail’s Kitchen @ Myhotel Bloomsbury

昨年11月21日、人気の高級ベーカリーチェーン・Gail’sが、初めてのレストラン「Gail’s Kitchen」を、Tottenham Court Roadから少し入ったところにあるホテル・ Myhotel Bloomusbury内にオープンさせた。Gail’sの新店舗、Bloomsbury bakeryも同じ場所にある。朝食、ランチ、アフタヌーン・ティー、ディナーと一日中、パンとパン焼きオーブンを使って調理した「small plates（小皿料理）」を提供している。

レストランエリアは、ホテルのレセプションのすぐ隣にあり、ホテルのラウンジとしても機能しているよう。でも5つ星ホテルのお堅いラウンジと違い、センスのいい現代風家具と使い古された木のテーブルやカウンターを上手くミックスし、カジュアルかつセンスよく仕上がっていて、完全に私たちの好み。この日は、タマネギ、クレソン、ホースラディッシュ（西洋ワサビ）ののったステーキサンドイッチ（£9.50/写真一番下）を注文。とても美味しかったけれど、小皿料理と謳っているだけあって、値段の割にサイズが小さすぎる気が。フレンドリーなスタッフが、美味しいパンの盛り合わせをサービスで出してくれたので、幸い空腹は収まったけれど。

でも料理は美味しいし、内装も素敵。辛口で知られるObserver紙のレストラン批評家・Jay Raynerでさえ、Gail’s Kitchenはお気に召したようだ（参照記事）。欠点は、ランチ＆ディナーは「小皿料理」しかなく、しかも品数も少ない事か（朝食メニューの方が充実）。

On November 21st last year, popular high-end artisan bakery chain Gail’s opened their first restaurant, Gail’s Kitchen, inside Myhotel Bloomusbury just off Tottenham Court Road, side by side to their Bloomsbury bakery. Focusing on dishes inspired by their speciality, bread & the bread oven, Gail’s Kitchen offers menu of “small plates” all day for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. 

The restaurant is just next to the hotel reception, so I guess it also serves as a hotel lounge, but not as stiff as 5-star hotel lounge that make us nervous. The interior is casual modern, mixing contemporary furniture and old wood tables and counters – perfectly our taste. We had steak sandwich with onion, watercress & fresh horseradish (£9.50/photo at the bottom) for lunch. It was delicious, but a bit too small – well, that’s why they call it “small plate”, but a little pricey relative to its size. Friendly staff offered us complimentary bread basket, which were very good as well, and it complimented our stomach.

Nice place and good food. Even the Observer’s harsh food critique who rarely compliment, Jay Rayner, seems to like Gail’s Kitchen (article). A setback is they have only “small plates” and small menu for lunch & dinner (more variety for breakfast).

Town Hall Hotel @ Patriot Square, Bethnal Green

This Bright Fieldから南へ数分歩くと、エドワード様式の立派な建物が見えてくる。これは2010年にオープンしたTown Hall Hotelで、シンガポール人ホテル実業家のLoh Lik Pengが、以前は区役所として使われていた、1909年建造のこの建物を改装。大理石の床や柱、立派な階段を備えた吹き抜けのロビーの片隅には、ミッド・センチュリー風の椅子が並ぶなど、アールデコ装飾とモダンなインテリアを融合した、優雅なデザインホテルに生まれ変わった。また、ホテル内のパブリック・スペースには、繊細な木版画や鉛筆描きの壁画、ペルシャ絨毯から作られたmoose（アメリカヘラジカ）の頭など、イースト・ロンドンのアーティストの作品が飾られている。

ロンドンに住んでいる人には宿泊する機会がないかもしれないけれど、ホテルには、ポルトガル人シェフ・Nuno Mendesがプロデュースした、ミシュラン一つ星のViajanteともう少しカジュアルなCorner roomという、二つの人気レストランが入っており、多くのグルメたちが訪れる。

部屋については泊まった事がないので、ご興味ある方は、批評家のレビュー（Telegraph/Guardian）と、デザインホテルサイト・Mr & Mrs Smithをチェックしてみて。でも、ホテルのあるエリアは、お世辞にも柄の良いエリアではなく、世界のおもちゃのコレクションを有するV&A Museum of Childhoodと、以前にブログでも取り上げた、いくつかのカフェやレストランしかないので、ロンドン初心者にはあまりお勧めできないかも。

Walking down several minutes to the south from This Bright Field, you will see Town Hall Hotel, opened sometime in 2010 and housed in a grand Edwardian building in Bethnal Green. Singapore hotelier Loh Lik Peng has transformed this former council hall with Art Deco detailing (history of the building) into this elegant boutique hotel, keeping the old charms but adding modern fixtures. The atrium is classic and impressive, with designed marble floors and marble pillars as well as imposing staircases, and also has some contemporary feel with mid-century style chairs for guests to relax. Inside of the hotel’s public spaces, you can see artworks by East London artists, such as delicate woodcuts, murals in pencil, and a mounted moose head made from Persian carpet.

For people who live in London, including us, may not have a chance to sleep in. However, this hotel houses two popular restaurants which are produced by renowned Portuguese chef Nuno Mendes, michelin-stared Viajante and Corner room, that attract many foodie Londoners.

I can’t write about the rooms as I’ve never slept there, so check the critique’s reviews (Telegraph/Guardian) or Boutique hotel site Mr & Mrs Smith if you want to stay. However, the location is not central or sophisticated at all,there is nothing but V&A Museum of Childhood and some hip neighborhood cafés & restaurants, and I am not sure if I want to recommend this hotel to a foreign guest who comes to London for the first time…

A Day in Cardiff, Wales

オリンピック女子サッカー準々決勝を見に行った際、せっかくの機会なのでカーディフに1泊し、翌日市内観光した。

人口約32万人のカーディフへは、ロンドン・パディントン駅から西へ電車で２時間ちょっと。カーディフは石炭の積み出し港として発展し、1955年にウェールズの首都となった。イギリスを構成する4つの「国（country）」のひとつであるウェールズは、ケルト系の文化・言語と強いアイデンティティを持つ。ウェールズでは、ウェールズ語が英語と並んで公用語とされ、道路標識や公文書は2言語で表記されている。中北部を中心に人口の21.7%（2004年調べ）がウェールズ語を話すことができるらしいが、カーディフ市内ではウェールズ語は文字では見るものの、全く耳にはしなかった。

When we went to see the Olympic women’s football quarter final in Cardiff, we stayed over night and enjoyed sightseeing the day after.

It takes just a little bit more than two hours to go to Cardiff by train from London Paddington station. Cardiff became prosper as a major port for the transport of coal in the early 19th century, and became the capital of Wales in 1955. Wales is one of the four ‘countries’ in UK, and it has retained a distinct cultural identity and is officially bilingual with English and Welsh. The Welsh Language Board indicated in 2004 that 21.7% of the population of Wales were able to speak the language, but I had never heard anybody speaking Welsh in Cardiff, though I saw the signage written in two languages.

カーディフの主な見所はカーディフ城とカーディフ・ベイ地区。市中心部にあるカーディフ城は、紀元1世紀に造られた古代ローマ人の砦に起源し、ノルマン征服後に再び要塞が築かれた。現在の建物は、19世紀に石炭の輸出で富を得た第3代ビュート侯が、建築家ウィリアム・バージェスに設計を依頼、ネオゴシック様式の外観を持ち、豪華絢爛なアラブルームやステンドグラスが美しいウィンタースモーキングルーム等、さまざまな意匠をこらした部屋が見学できる。

Major tourist attractions in Cardiff are Cardiff Castle and Cardiff Bay. Cardiff Castle is situated in the heart of the city centre. The castle is a medieval castle and Victorian architecture Gothic revival mansion, transformed from a Norman keep erected over a Roman fort. The castle substantially altered and extended during the Victorian period by John Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute, and the architect William Burges.

カーディフ・ベイは石炭の積出港・旧波止波周辺地域を再開発した地区で、セーリングやウォータースポーツが楽しめる淡水湖や、アートセンター、ホテル、レストランなどが集まる新しい観光スポットになっている。中心部から10〜15分おきに出ているバス6番で約10〜15分ほど。

Cardiff Bay is the new tourist destination where old Cardiff docklands have been redeveloped in the last decade, and home to a large freshwater lake for sailing and water sports as well as restaurants and hotels. It is about 10-15 minutes by bus no.6, running every 10-15 minutes, from the city center.

Welsh National Opera（ウェールズ国立オペラ団）の本拠地で、バレエやダンス、ミュージカル、コメディなどが催される、Wales Millennium Centre（ウェールズ・ミレニアム・センター）。愛称「Armadillo（アルマジロ）」。正面には、センターがウェールズ出身の作曲家、カール・ジェンキンスに委託して作られた曲名「Creu Gwir Fel Gwydr O Ffwrnais Awen（ウェールズ語 / 英語では In These Stones Horizons Sing）」くりぬかれている。

Locally nicknamed “the Armadillo”, the Wales Millennium Centre is home to the Welsh National Opera and has hosted performances of opera, ballet, dance, comedy and musicals. On its facade, you can read “Creu Gwir Fel Gwydr O Ffwrnais Awen” in Welsh, or In These Stones Horizons Sing in English, which is the name of a work for chorus and orchestra composed by Welsh composer Karl Jenkins, which was commissioned for the opening of the Wales Millennium Centre.

1897年に建設されたPierheadは、Bute Dock Companyがあった建物 / The Pierhead, built in 1897, was formerly the headquarters of the Bute Dock Company.

1992年に再建された歴史的建造物のノルウェー教会は、現在コンサートや展覧会などを行うアートセンターとなっている。

The Norwegian Church Arts Centre, is a rescued historic wooden church that was rebuilt in 1992 and is as a venue for small concerts, art exhibitions, conferences, meetings and celebrations.

宿泊したPark Plaza Hotel Cardiffは、モダンで広々として居心地のいいホテルで、値段もそんなに高くない。目の前はナイトクラブが集まる通りだけれど、部屋はとても静かで、外の騒音は聞こえない。

Park Plaza Hotel Cardiff where we stayed was a modern and chic hotel with a moderate price and has spacious rooms. It is situated in front of the street with full of night clubs and bars, but the room was very quiet and we didn’t hear any noise from outside.
